New records of German Scelionidae (Hymenoptera: Platygastroidea) from the collection of the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Scelionid wasps are arthropod egg parasitoids, many of which are relevant to global biosecurity. However, the scelionid fauna of Germany has not received much attention from professional taxonomists.

New information

Eleven species and four genera are recorded for the first time from Germany, including species of interest to agriculture and biological control. First genus records include Baryconus Förster, Macroteleia Westwood, Paratelenomus Dodd and Probaryconus Kieffer. First species records include B.europaeus (Kieffer), Idrisnigroclavatus (Kieffer), Idrissemiflavus (Kieffer), M.bicolora Kieffer, M.pannonica Szabo, Paratelenomussaccharalis (Dodd), Trimorusvaricornis (Walker), Trissolcusbasalis (Wollaston), Trissolcusbelenus (Walker), Trissolcuscolemani (Crawford) and Trissolcusflavipes (Thompson). COI barcodes are identified for the first time from B.europaeus and M.bicolora. Each species is illustrated and updated world distributions are provided. Implications for agriculture are discussed.

Unlocking the Entomological Collection of the Natural History Museum of Maputo, Mozambique.

Project description:BackgroundThe collections of the Natural History Museum of Maputo have a crucial role in the safeguarding of Mozambique's biodiversity, representing an important repository of data and materials regarding the natural heritage of the country. In this paper, a dataset is described, based on the Museum's Entomological Collection recording 409 species belonging to seven orders and 48 families. Each specimen's available data, such as geographical coordinates and taxonomic information, have been digitised to build the dataset. The specimens included in the dataset were obtained between 1914-2018 by collectors and researchers from the Natural History Museum of Maputo (once known as "Museu Alváro de Castro") in all the country's provinces, with the exception of Cabo Delgado Province.New informationThis paper adds data to the Biodiversity Network of Mozambique and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, within the objectives of the SECOSUD II Project and the Biodiversity Information for Development Programme. The aforementioned insect dataset is available on the GBIF Engine data portal (https://doi.org/10.15468/j8ikhb). Data were also shared on the Mozambican national portal of biodiversity data BioNoMo (https://bionomo.openscidata.org), developed by SECOSUD II Project.

The Lyell Collection at the Earth Sciences Department, Natural History Museum, London (UK).

Project description:Background:This paper provides a quantitative and general description of the Lyell Collection kept in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum of London. This collection started to be built by the eminent British geologist Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875) in 1846 when the first specimen reached the Museum. The last one entered in 1980 donated by one of Lyell's heirs. There are more than 1700 specimens, mainly hand specimens with 93% of the fauna and flora from the Cenozoic of the Macaronesian archipelagos of the Canaries and Madeira. Those specimens that belong to the Lyell Collection with certainty have been databased and imaged. Currently they are being geo-referred automatically with the rest of the site geo-references at the NHM. This collection could be increased by a couple of dozen more specimens with those specimens located in the same drawers, but they do not have collector details. The work of data collection of these specimens was implemented over a year from 2016 to 2017, including annelids; brachiopods; bryozoans; echinoderms; scyphozoans; bivalves; gastropods; scaphopods; trilobites; plants; reptiles; fishes; and mammals. New information:Access to the specimen-level data is available through the NHM data portal with the images associated. This is the first time that a description of the Fossil Lyell Collection dataset is available in the literature.

Type specimens of Neuropterida in the Hope Entomological Collection, Oxford University Museum of Natural History.

Project description:The Hope Entomological Collection in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History holds a large and diverse array of historically valuable type specimens for species in the superorder Neuropterida (Megaloptera, Neuroptera, and Raphidioptera). Most are from the mid-1800s (1823-1874). Here, we report each type found during a rigorous search of the collection, and we confirm the identity and status of each type with bibliographic, specimen, and label data. Images, current nomenclatural information, and references for name changes are provided for each species. We identified primary or secondary types for 76 species in seven families of Neuroptera, primary and secondary types for one species of Raphidoptera (Raphidiidae), and secondary types for three species of Megaloptera (Corydalidae). Among the Neuroptera, we found primary types for 26 species of Mantispidae, 16 species of Myrmeleontidae, 11 species of Ascalaphidae, seven species of Nemopteridae, five species of Chrysopidae, and one species each of Coniopterygidae and Hemerobiidae. Types for only two species that were reported to be in the collection were not found. To help stabilize the nomenclature, we made new lectotype designations for the following six species in the Hope Collection: Colobopterusdissimilis McLachlan, 1871; Mantispabatesella Westwood, 1867; Mantispamyrapetrella Westwood, 1867; Mantispatropica Westwood, 1852; Myrmeleonanomalus Rambur, 1842; and Myrmeleonsingulare Westwood, 1847. We also made new lectotype designations for two species in the Natural History Museum in London: Mantispaindica Westwood, 1852, and Mantispaquadrituberculata Westwood, 1852. In several other cases, holotype determinations in the literature were recognized as lectotype designations. Finally, to correct an important error in the literature, we reinstated the synonymization of Ascalaphusanticus Walker, 1853, A.loquax Walker, 1853, and A.trux Walker, 1853 under A.longus Walker, 1853.

The Natural History Museum Data Portal.

Project description:The Natural History Museum, London (NHM), generates and holds some of the largest global data sets relating to the biological and geological diversity of the natural world. A majority of these data were, until 2015, not widely accessible, and, even when published, were typically hard to find, poorly documented and in formats that impede discovery and integration. To better serve the bespoke needs of user communities outside and within the NHM, a dedicated data portal was developed to surface these data sets and provide a sustainable platform to encourage their citation and reuse. This paper describes the technical development of the data portal, from its inception to beta launch in December 2015, its first 2 years of operation, and future plans for the project. It outlines the development principles adopted for this prototypical project, which subsequently informed new digital project management methodologies at the NHM. The process of developing the data portal acted as a driver to implement policies necessary to encourage a culture of data sharing at the NHM.

The Hummingbird Collection of the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto (MHNC-UP), Portugal.

Project description:BackgroundThe Hummingbird (Family Trochilidae) Collection of the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto (MHNC-UP) is one of the oldest collections of this family harboured in European museums. Almost 2,000 specimens, that encompass most of the taxonomic diversity of this family, were collected in the late 19th Century. The collection is relevant due its antiquity and because all specimens were bought from the same provider, mainly as mounted specimens, for a Portuguese private collection of Neotropical fauna. In the early 20th Century, it was donated to the Museum that is now the MHNC-UP.New informationThe information about the majority of these specimens is now available for consultation on the GBIF platform after curation of all specimens and digital cleaning of the associated metadata. In the process, hundreds of non-catalogued specimens were found and taxonomic and spatial information was updated for many of the specimens.

Project description:A critical and annotated catalogue of 72 types of Chrysididae (Hymenoptera) belonging to 53 species and subspecies housed in the Swedish Museum of Natural History is given. The lectotypes of Chrysisdiversa Dahlbom, 1845, Chrysissoror Dahlbom, 1854, Chrysurasulcata Dahlbom, 1845 and Holopygaamoenula Dahlbom, 1845 are designated. The previous lectotype of Chrysisdiversa Dahlbom, 1845 is set aside. Five new synonymies are proposed: Chrysiselegansvar.smaragdula Trautmann, 1926 (currently Chrysiselegansssp.interrogata Linsenmaier, 1959 repl. name for smaragdula Trautmann, nec Fabricius, 1775), syn. n. of Chrysisconfluens (Dahlbom, 1845); Chrysiseximia Mocsáry, 1889, syn. n. of Chrysispoecila Mocsáry, 1889; Chrysispyrrhina Dahlbom, 1845, syn. n. of Chrysiserythromelas Dahlbom, 1845; Chrysisseparata Trautmann, 1926, syn. n. of Chrysislateralis Dahlbom, 1845; Chrysissicula Abeille de Perrin, 1877, syn. n. of Chrysiserythromelas Dahlbom, 1845. Chrysisserena Radoszkowski, 1891 is the first available name for Chrysispyrrhinasensuauctorum. Chrysiserythromelas Dahlbom, 1845 is revaluated as valid species. The neotype of Chrysisinaequalis Dahlbom, 1845 is designated in the Linsenmaier collection (NMLS). Illustrations of 34 types are given.

Natural history museum collection and citizen science data show advancing phenology of Danish hoverflies (Insecta: Diptera, Syrphidae) with increasing annual temperature.

Project description:We explore the phenological response by Danish hoverflies (Syrphidae) to continually rising annual temperatures by analysing >50.000 natural history collection and citizen science records for 37 species collected between 1900 and 2018, a period during which the annual average temperature in Denmark rose significantly (p << 0.01). We perform a simple linear regression analysis of the 10th percentile observation date for each species against year of observation. Fourteen of the species showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) negative correlation between 10th percentile date and year of observation, indicating earlier emergence as a likely response to climatic warming. Eighteen species showed a non-significant (p ? 0.05) negative correlation between 10th percentile date and year of observation, while four species showed a non-significant (p ? 0.05) positive correlation, and one showed neither a positive nor a negative correlation. We explore the possible impact of the length of the data series on the regression analysis by dividing the species into four groups depending on how far back in time we have data: ultra-short series (with data from 2003-2018); short series (data from 1998-2018); medium series (data from 1980-2018); long series (data from 2018 to before 1980). The length of the series seems to have an effect on the results as 60% of the long series species (nine out of 15) showed a statistically significant negative correlation, while for the shorter series species less than 35% showed a statistically significant negative correlation. When we reduced the long series in length to short series, the proportion of statistically significant negative correlations fell to 33%, confirming this assumption. We conclude that northern temperate hoverflies generally react to the ongoing climatic warming by emerging earlier.
