Project description:Stimulated by a recent experiment observing successfully two superconducting states with even- and odd-number of electrons in a nanowire topological superconductor as expected from the existence of two end Majorana quasiparticles (MQs) [Albrecht et al., Nature 531, 206 (2016)], we propose a way to manipulate Majorana qubit exploiting quantum tunneling effects. The prototype setup consists of two one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors coupled by a tunneling junction which can be controlled by gate voltage. We show that the time evolution of superconducting phase difference at the junction under a voltage bias induces an oscillation in energy levels of the Majorana parity states, whereas the level-crossing is avoided by a small coupling energy of MQs in the individual 1D superconductors. This results in a Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference between the Majorana parity states. Adjusting pulses of bias voltage and gate voltage, one can construct a LZS interferometry which provides an arbitrary manipulation of the Majorana qubit.

Project description:Landau-Zener transition (LZT) has been explored in a variety of physical systems for coherent population transfer between different quantum states. In recent years, there have been various proposals for applying LZT to quantum information processing because when compared to the methods using ac pulse for coherent population transfer, protocols based on LZT are less sensitive to timing errors. However, the effect of finite range of qubit energy available to LZT based state control operations has not been thoroughly examined. In this work, we show that using the well-known Landau-Zener formula in the vicinity of an avoided energy-level crossing will cause considerable errors due to coherent oscillation of the transition probability in a single-passage LZT experiment. The data agree well with the numerical simulations which take the transient dynamics of LZT into account. These results not only provide a closer view on the issue of finite-time LZT but also shed light on its effects on the quantum state manipulation.

Project description:High fidelity universal gates for quantum bits form an essential ingredient of quantum information processing. In particular, geometric gates have attracted attention because they have a higher intrinsic resistance to certain errors. However, their realization remains a challenge because of the need for complicated quantum control on a multi-level structure as well as meeting the adiabatic condition within a short decoherence time. Here, we demonstrate non-adiabatic quantum operations for a two-level system by applying a well-controlled geometric Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interferometry. By characterizing the gate quality, we also investigate the operation in the presence of realistic dephasing. Furthermore, the result provides an essential model suitable for understanding an interplay of geometric phase and Landau-Zener-Stückelberg process which are well explored separately.

Project description:The semiclassical models of nonadiabatic transition were proposed first by Landau and Zener in 1932, and have been widely used in the study of electron transfer (ET); however, experimental demonstration of the Landau-Zener formula remains challenging to observe. Herein, employing the Hush-Marcus theory, thermal ET in mixed-valence complexes {[Mo2]-(ph)n-[Mo2]}+ (n = 1-3) has been investigated, spanning the nonadiabatic throughout the adiabatic limit, by analysis of the intervalence transition absorbances. Evidently, the Landau-Zener formula is valid in the adiabatic regime in a broader range of conditions than the theoretical limitation known as the narrow avoided-crossing. The intermediate system is identified with an overall transition probability (κel) of ∼0.5, which is contributed by the single and the first multiple passage. This study shows that in the intermediate regime, the ET kinetic results derived from the adiabatic and nonadiabatic formalisms are nearly identical, in accordance with the Landau-Zener model. The obtained insights help to understand and control the ET processes in biological and chemical systems.

Project description:A basic requirement for quantum information processing is the ability to universally control the state of a single qubit on timescales much shorter than the coherence time. Although ultrafast optical control of a single spin has been achieved in quantum dots, scaling up such methods remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate complete control of the quantum-dot charge qubit on the picosecond scale [corrected], orders of magnitude faster than the previously measured electrically controlled charge- or spin-based qubits. We observe tunable qubit dynamics in a charge-stability diagram, in a time domain, and in a pulse amplitude space of the driven pulse. The observations are well described by Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference. These results establish the feasibility of a full set of all-electrical single-qubit operations. Although our experiment is carried out in a solid-state architecture, the technique is independent of the physical encoding of the quantum information and has the potential for wider applications.

Project description:This paper presents a novel high-Q silicon distributed Lamé mode resonator (DLR) for VHF timing reference applications. The DLR employs the nature of shear wave propagation to enable a cascade of small square Lamé modes in beam or frame configurations with increased transduction area. Combined with high efficiency nano-gap capacitive transduction, it enables low motional impedances while scaling the frequency to VHF range. The DLR designs are robust against common process variations and demonstrate high manufacturability across different silicon substrates and process specifications. Fabricated DLRs in beam and frame configurations demonstrate high performance scalability with high Q-factors ranging from 50 to 250 k, motional impedances <1 kΩ, and high-temperature frequency turnover points >90 °C in the VHF range, and are fabricated using a wafer-level-packaged HARPSS process. Packaged devices show excellent robustness against temperature cycling, device thinning, and aging effects, which makes them a great candidate for stable high frequency references in size-sensitive and power-sensitive 5 G and other IoT applications.

Project description:We show that the speed of the chromophore photoisomerization of animal rhodopsins is not a relevant control knob for their light sensitivity. This result is at odds with the momentum-driven tunnelling rationale (i.e., assuming a one-dimensional Landau-Zener model for the decay: Zener, C. Non-Adiabatic Crossing of Energy Levels. Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 1932, 137 (833), 696-702) holding that a faster nuclear motion through the conical intersection translates into a higher quantum yield and, thus, light sensitivity. Instead, a model based on the phase-matching of specific excited state vibrational modes should be considered. Using extensive semiclassical hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics trajectory computations to simulate the photoisomerization of three animal rhodopsin models (visual rhodopsin, squid rhodopsin and human melanopsin), we also demonstrate that phase-matching between three different modes (the reactive carbon and hydrogen twisting coordinates and the bond length alternation mode) is required to achieve high quantum yields. In fact, such "phase-matching" mechanism explains the computational results and provides a tool for the prediction of the photoisomerization outcome in retinal proteins.

Project description:Mechanical resonators are widely used as precision clocks and sensitive detectors that rely on the stability of their eigenfrequencies. The phase noise is determined by different factors including thermal noise, frequency noise of the resonator and noise in the feedback circuitry. Increasing the vibration amplitude can mitigate some of these effects but the improvements are limited by nonlinearities that are particularly strong for miniaturized micro- and nano-mechanical systems. Here we design a micromechanical resonator with non-monotonic dependence of the eigenfrequency on energy. Near the extremum, where the dispersion of the eigenfrequency is zero, the system regains certain characteristics of a linear resonator, albeit at large amplitudes. The spectral peak undergoes narrowing when the noise intensity is increased. With the resonator serving as the frequency-selecting element in a feedback loop, the phase noise at the extremum amplitude is?~3 times smaller than the minimal noise in the conventional nonlinear regime.

Project description:Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide crystals (TMDCs) hold great promise for semiconductor optoelectronics because their bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) are stable at room temperature and interact strongly with light. When TMDCs are embedded in an optical microcavity, excitons can hybridise with cavity photons to form exciton polaritons, which inherit useful properties from their constituents. The ability to manipulate and trap polaritons on a microchip is critical for applications. Here, we create a non-trivial potential landscape for polaritons in monolayer WS2, and demonstrate their trapping and ballistic propagation across tens of micrometers. We show that the effects of dielectric disorder, which restrict the diffusion of WS2 excitons and broaden their spectral resonance, are dramatically reduced for polaritons, leading to motional narrowing and preserved partial coherence. Linewidth narrowing and coherence are further enhanced in the trap. Our results demonstrate the possibility of long-range dissipationless transport and efficient trapping of TMDC polaritons in ambient conditions.

Project description:Superconducting microwave resonators are crucial elements of microwave circuits, offering a wide range of potential applications in modern science and technology. While conventional low-T[Formula: see text] superconductors are mainly employed, high-T[Formula: see text] cuprates could offer enhanced temperature and magnetic field operating ranges. Here, we report the realization of [Formula: see text] superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators, and demonstrate a continuous evolution from a lossy undercoupled regime, to a lossless overcoupled regime by adjusting the device geometry, in good agreement with circuit model theory. A high-quality factor resonator was then used to perform electron spin resonance measurements on a molecular spin ensemble across a temperature range spanning two decades. We observe spin-cavity hybridization indicating coherent coupling between the microwave field and the spins in a highly cooperative regime. The temperature dependence of the Rabi splitting and the spin relaxation time point toward an antiferromagnetic coupling of the spins below 2 K. Our findings indicate that high-Tc superconducting resonators hold great promise for the development of functional circuits. Additionally, they suggest novel approaches for achieving hybrid quantum systems based on high-T[Formula: see text] superconductors and for conducting electron spin resonance measurements over a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures.
