Cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal FeGe _x phases (x = 1, 1.5, 2): Raman spectroscopy and magnetic properties.

ABSTRACT: There is currently an emerging drive towards computational materials design and fabrication of predicted novel materials. One of the keys to developing appropriate fabrication methods is determination of the composition and phase. Here we explore the FeGe system and establish reference Raman signatures for the distinction between FeGe hexagonal and cubic structures, as well as FeGe₂ and Fe₂Ge₃ phases. The experimental results are substantiated by first principles lattice dynamics calculations as well as by complementary structural characterization such as transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, along with magnetic measurements.

Overview of the Structural, Electronic and Optical Properties of the Cubic and Tetragonal Phases of PbTiO3 by Applying Hubbard Potential Correction.

Project description:We have performed a systematic study resulting in detailed information on the structural, electronic and optical properties of the cubic (Pm3¯m) and tetragonal (P4mm) phases of PbTiO3 applying the GGA/PBE approximation with and without the Hubbard U potential correction. Through the variation in Hubbard potential values, we establish band gap predictions for the tetragonal phase of PbTiO3 that are in rather good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the bond lengths for both phases of PbTiO3 were assessed with experimental measurements, confirming the validity of our model, while chemical bond analysis highlights the covalent nature of the Ti-O and Pb-O bonds. In addition, the study of the optical properties of the two phases of PbTiO3, by applying Hubbard' U potential, corrects the systematic inaccuracy of the GGA approximation, as well as validating the electronic analysis and offering excellent concordance with the experimental results. Therefore, our results underline that the GGA/PBE approximation with the Hubbard U potential correction could be an effective method for obtaining reliable band gap predictions with moderate computational cost. Therefore, these findings will enable theorists to make use of the precise values of these two phases' gap energies to enhance PbTiO3's performance for new applications.

Structural dynamics of CH3NH3+ and PbBr3- in tetragonal and cubic phases of CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite by nuclear magnetic resonance.

Project description:Understanding the structural dynamics of lead-halide perovskites is essential for their advanced use as photovoltaics. Here, the structural dynamics of the CH3NH3 cation and PbBr6 octahedra in the perovskite CH3NH3PbBr3 were studied via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to determine the mechanism of the transition from the tetragonal to cubic phase. The chemical shifts were obtained by 1H, 13C, and 207Pb magic angle spinning NMR and 14N static NMR. The chemical shifts of the 1H nuclei in CH3 and NH3 remained constant with increasing temperature, whereas those of the 13C and 207Pb nuclei varied near the phase transition temperature (TC = 236 K), indicating that the structural environments of 13C and 207Pb change near TC. The spin-lattice relaxation time T1ρ values for 1H, 13C, and 207Pb nuclei increased with increasing temperature and did not exhibit an abrupt change near TC. In addition, the two lines in the 14N NMR spectra superposed into one line near TC, indicating the occurrence of a phase transition to a cubic phase with higher symmetry than tetragonal. Consequently, the main factor causing the phase transition from the tetragonal to cubic phase near TC is a change in the surroundings of the 207Pb nuclei in the PbBr6 octahedra and of the C-N groups in the CH3NH3 cations.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Activity of ZrO2 Nanoparticles: Effect of Tetragonal and Monoclinic Phases.

Project description:The effect of the ZrO2 crystal form on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity was studied. The ratio of the tetragonal (T) and monoclinic (M) phases of ZrO2 nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs) was controlled by regulating the ratio of two types of additives in the hydrothermal synthesis method. The SERS intensity of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) was gradually enhanced by changing the M and T phase ratio in ZrO2 NPs. The degree of charge transfer (CT) in the enhanced 4-MBA molecule was greater than 0.5, indicating that CT was the main contributor to SERS. The intensity of SERS was strongest when the ratio of the T crystal phase in ZrO2 was 99.7%, and the enhancement factor reached 2.21 × 104. More importantly, the proposed study indicated that the T and M phases of the ZrO2 NPs affected the SERS enhancement. This study provides a new approach for developing high-quality SERS substrates and improving the transmission efficiency of molecular sensors.

Garnet, the archetypal cubic mineral, grows tetragonal.

Project description:Garnet is the archetypal cubic mineral, occurring in a wide variety of rock types in Earth's crust and upper mantle. Owing to its prevalence, durability and compositional diversity, garnet is used to investigate a broad range of geological processes. Although birefringence is a characteristic feature of rare Ca-Fe3+ garnet and Ca-rich hydrous garnet, the optical anisotropy that has occasionally been documented in common (that is, anhydrous Ca-Fe2+-Mg-Mn) garnet is generally attributed to internal strain of the cubic structure. Here we show that common garnet with a non-cubic (tetragonal) crystal structure is much more widespread than previously thought, occurring in low-temperature, high-pressure metamorphosed basalts (blueschists) from subduction zones and in low-grade metamorphosed mudstones (phyllites and schists) from orogenic belts. Indeed, a non-cubic symmetry appears to be typical of common garnet that forms at low temperatures (<450 °C), where it has a characteristic Fe-Ca-rich composition with very low Mg contents. We propose that, in most cases, garnet does not initially grow cubic. Our discovery indicates that the crystal chemistry and thermodynamic properties of garnet at low-temperature need to be re-assessed, with potential consequences for the application of garnet as an investigative tool in a broad range of geological environments.

Dynamic unidirectional anisotropy in cubic FeGe with antisymmetric spin-spin-coupling.

Project description:Strong unidirectional anisotropy in bulk polycrystalline B20 FeGe has been measured by ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Such anisotropy is not present in static magnetometry measurements. B20 FeGe exhibits inherent Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, resulting in a nonreciprocal spin-wave dispersion. Bulk and micron sized samples were produced and characterized. By X-band ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy at 276 K ± 1 K, near the Curie temperature, a distribution of resonance modes was observed in accordance with the cubic anisotropy of FeGe. This distribution exhibits a unidirectional anisotropy, i.e. shift of the resonance field under field inversion, of KUD = 960 J/m3 ± 10 J/m3, previously unknown in bulk ferromagnets. Additionally, more than 25 small amplitude standing spin wave modes were observed inside a micron sized FeGe wedge, measured at 293 K ± 2 K. These modes also exhibit unidirectional anisotropy. This effect, only dynamically measurable and not detectable in static magnetometry measurements, may open new possibilities for directed spin transport in chiral magnetic systems.

Enthalpy Change from Pure Cubic Ice Ic to Hexagonal Ice Ih.

Project description:The preparation of pure cubic ice without hexagonal stacking faults has been realized only recently by del Rosso et al. ( Nat. Mater. 2020, 19, 663-668) and Komatsu et al. ( Nat. Commun. 2020, 11, 464). With our present calorimetric study on the transition from pure cubic ice to hexagonal ice we are able to clarify the value of the enthalpy change ΔHc→h to be -37.7 ± 2.3 J mol-1. The transition temperature is identified as 226 K, much higher than in previous work on ice Isd. This is due to a catalytic effect of hexagonal faults on the transition, but even more importantly due to a relaxation exotherm that was not properly identified in the past.

Stability and equation of state of face-centered cubic and hexagonal close packed phases of argon under pressure.

Project description:The compression of argon is measured between 10 K and 296 K up to 20 GPa and and up to 114 GPa at 296 K in diamond anvil cells. Three samples conditioning are used: (1) single crystal sample directly compressed between the anvils, (2) powder sample directly compressed between the anvils, (3) single crystal sample compressed in a pressure medium. A partial transformation of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase to a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure is observed above 4.2-13 GPa. Hcp phase forms through stacking faults in fcc-Ar and its amount depends on pressurizing conditions and starting fcc-Ar microstructure. The quasi-hydrostatic equation of state of the fcc phase is well described by a quasi-harmonic Mie-Grüneisen-Debye formalism, with the following 0 K parameters for Rydberg-Vinet equation: [Formula: see text] = 38.0 Å[Formula: see text]/at, [Formula: see text] = 2.65 GPa, [Formula: see text] = 7.423. Under the current experimental conditions, non-hydrostaticity affects measured P-V points mostly at moderate pressure ([Formula: see text] 20 GPa).

Luminescence and Formation of Cubic and Hexagonal (K,Rb)2SiF6:Mn4.

Project description:The efficient red-emitting phosphor K2SiF6:Mn4+ (KSF) is widely used for low-power LED applications. The saturated red color and sharp line emission are ideal for application in backlight LEDs for displays. However, the long excited state lifetime lowers the external quantum yield (EQY) at high photon flux, limiting the application in (higher power density) lighting. Here, we report the synthesis of a new crystalline phase: hexagonal (K,Rb)SiF6:Mn4+ (h-KRSF). Due to the lower local symmetry, the Mn4+ emission in this new host material shows a pronounced zero phonon line, which is different from Mn4+ in the cubic KSF. The lower symmetry reduces the excited state lifetime, and thus, the loss of EQY under high photon fluxes, and the spectral change also increases the lumen/W output. Temperature-dependent emission and lifetime measurements reveal a high luminescence quenching temperature of ∼500 K, similar to that of KSF. The formation mechanism of h-KRSF was studied in situ by measuring the emission spectra of the precipitate in solution over time. Initially, nanocrystalline cubic KRSF (c-KRSF) is formed, which transforms into a microcrystalline hexagonal precipitate with a surprising exponential increase in the transformation rate with time. The stability of the new phase was studied by temperature-dependent XRD, and an irreversible transition back to the cubic phase was seen upon heating to temperatures above 200 °C.

Density Functional Study of Cubic, Tetragonal, and Orthorhombic CsPbBr3 Perovskite.

Project description:Cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite has recently gained significance owing to its rapidly increasing performance when used for light-emitting devices. In this study, we used density functional theory to determine the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the cubic, tetragonal, and orthorhombic temperature-dependent phases of CsPbBr3 perovskite using the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method. The electronic properties of CsPbBr3 perovskite have been investigated by evaluating their changes upon exerting spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The following exchange potentials were used: the local density approximation (LDA), Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation (PBE-GGA), Engel-Vosko GGA (EV-GGA), Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof GGA revised for solids (PBEsol-GGA), modified Becke-Johnson GGA (mBJ-GGA), new modified Becke-Johnson GGA (nmBJ-GGA), and unmodified Becke-Johnson GGA (umBJ-GGA). Our band structure results indicated that the cubic, tetragonal, and orthorhombic phases have direct energy bandgaps. By including the SOC effect in the calculations, the bandgaps computed with mBJ-GGA and nmBJ-GGA were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, despite the large variations in their lattice constants, the three CsPbBr3 phases possessed similar optical properties. These results demonstrate a wide temperature range of operation for CsPbBr3.

Optical Contrast and Raman Spectroscopy Techniques Applied to Few-Layer 2D Hexagonal Boron Nitride.

Project description:The successful integration of few-layer thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) into devices based on two-dimensional materials requires fast and non-destructive techniques to quantify their thickness. Optical contrast methods and Raman spectroscopy have been widely used to estimate the thickness of two-dimensional semiconductors and semi-metals. However, they have so far not been applied to two-dimensional insulators. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of optical contrast techniques to estimate the thickness of few-layer hBN on SiO2/Si substrates, which was also measured by atomic force microscopy. Optical contrast of hBN on SiO2/Si substrates exhibits a linear trend with the number of hBN monolayers in the few-layer thickness range. We also used bandpass filters (500-650 nm) to improve the effectiveness of the optical contrast methods for thickness estimations. We also investigated the thickness dependence of the high frequency in-plane E2g phonon mode of atomically thin hBN on SiO2/Si substrates by micro-Raman spectroscopy, which exhibits a weak thickness-dependence attributable to the in-plane vibration character of this mode. Ab initio calculations of the Raman active phonon modes of atomically thin free-standing crystals support these results, even if the substrate can reduce the frequency shift of the E2g phonon mode by reducing the hBN thickness. Therefore, the optical contrast method arises as the most suitable and fast technique to estimate the thickness of hBN nanosheets.
