Permeability and Porosity Development during the Carbonization of Coals of Different Coking Pressures.

ABSTRACT: To obtain a better understanding of the development of coking pressure during the carbonization process, the plastic and semicoke layers of nine coking coals were investigated. The permeability of the plastic layer to the passage of gas and the porosity of the semicoke were analyzed at two temperatures, 500 and 800 °C. In the case of dangerous coals, there was a wide zone of low permeability covering most of the plastic layer and part of the semicoke, whereas safe coals had a very narrow permeability zone that affected only a small part of the plastic layer. It seems that dangerous coals have a higher porosity and a lower Hg apparent density than safe coals. In addition, the semicokes obtained at 800 °C from the dangerous coals had a higher macropore volume with pore size between 50 nm and 12 μm but a lower suprapore volume (pore size between 12 and 250 μm).

Effect of Different Acid-Modified Coking Coals on Quinoline Adsorption.

Project description:The adsorption of quinoline from wastewater by coking coal (AC-1), HCl-modified coking coal (AC-2), HNO3-modified coking coal (AC-3), HF-modified coking coal (AC-4), and H2SO4-modified coking coals (AC-5) was investigated in this paper. The effects of acid-modified concentration, modification time, and adsorption time versus quinoline removal rate were studied by batch experiments. The quinoline concentration was measured by UV spectrophotometry, the average pore size and specific surface area of coking coal before and after modification were characterized through static nitrogen adsorption, the mineral composition of coking coal was tested by X-ray diffraction, the surface functional groups were tested by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the surface topography was tested using a scanning electron microscope. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of coking coals was the best when both the modification time was 120 min and the acid-modified concentration was 0.1 mol·L-1 and the quinoline removal rate reaches the highest when the adsorption time was 120 min. The specific surface area of AC-2 increased from 2.898 to 3.637 m2·g-1, and the removal rate of quinoline increased from 77.64 to 90.61%. Acids reacted with inorganic mineral impurities within coking coal such as hydrogen vanadium phosphate hydrate, which caused an increase in the specific surface area. A new peak appeared in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy pattern at the wavenumber 2300 cm-1. The surface of coking coal modified by acids was rougher than that of AC-1. The adsorption capacity of coking coal was improved after modification, and modified coking coals have the highest potential as low-cost adsorbents for quinoline removal.

Study on the Differences of Chemical Structures and Pyrolysis Characteristics between the Jurassic and Carboniferous Coking Coals.

Project description:Using Jurassic coking coals and Carboniferous coking coals as raw materials, carbonization experiments were carried out on the cokes produced by them in a self-made furnace in a laboratory-scale coking furnace, finding that the coke quality of the Jurassic fat coals and coking coals was obviously inferior to that of the Carboniferous coking coals of the same brand. In this study, the reasons for this phenomenon were studied by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis of experimental coal samples and by combining the differences in chemical structures of experimental coal samples with pyrolysis characteristic parameters. It was found that the key factor affecting the quality of cokes made from the Jurassic fat coals, coking coals, and highly volatile coking coals was that the coals contained too many oxygen-containing functional groups, which were decomposed into reactive oxygen species in the main pyrolysis stage of coal. These reactive oxygen species would consume too much free-moving hydrogen and then trigger a large number of condensation and cross-linking reactions, resulting in poor plastic mass and coke quality.

Characterization of coal porosity for naturally tectonically stressed coals in Huaibei coal field, China.

Project description:The enrichment of coalbed methane (CBM) and the outburst of gas in a coal mine are closely related to the nanopore structure of coal. The evolutionary characteristics of 12 coal nanopore structures under different natural deformational mechanisms (brittle and ductile deformation) are studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. The results indicate that there are mainly submicropores (2~5 nm) and supermicropores (<2 nm) in ductile deformed coal and mesopores (10~100 nm) and micropores (5~10 nm) in brittle deformed coal. The cumulative pore volume (V) and surface area (S) in brittle deformed coal are smaller than those in ductile deformed coal which indicates more adsorption space for gas. The coal with the smaller pores exhibits a large surface area, and coal with the larger pores exhibits a large volume for a given pore volume. We also found that the relationship between S and V turns from a positive correlation to a negative correlation when S > 4 m(2)/g, with pore sizes <5 nm in ductile deformed coal. The nanopore structure (<100 nm) and its distribution could be affected by macromolecular structure in two ways. Interconversion will occur among the different size nanopores especially in ductile deformed coal.

Influence of hydrothermal carbonization conditions on the porosity, functionality, and sorption properties of microalgae hydrochars.

Project description:Green microalgae is a possible feedstock for the production of biofuels, chemicals, food/feed, and medical products. Large-scale microalgae production requires large quantities of water and nutrients, directing the attention to wastewater as a cultivation medium. Wastewater-cultivated microalgae could via wet thermochemical conversion be valorised into products for e.g., water treatment. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was used to process microalgae polycultures grown in municipal wastewater. The objective was to perform a systematic examination of how carbonization temperature, residence time, and initial pH affected solid yield, composition, and properties. Carbonization temperature, time and initial pH all had statistically significant effects on hydrochar properties, with temperature having the most pronounced effect; the surface area increased from 8.5 to 43.6 m2 g-1 as temperature was increased from 180 to 260 °C. However, hydrochars produced at low temperature and initially neutral pH generally had the highest capacity for methylene blue adsorption. DRIFTS analysis of the hydrochar revealed that the pH conditions changed the functional group composition, implying that adsorption was electrostatic interactions driven. This study concludes that un-activated hydrochars from wastewater grown microalgae produced at relatively low hydrothermal carbonization temperatures adsorb methylene blue, despite having low surface area.

Keystone Microorganisms Regulate the Methanogenic Potential in Coals with Different Coal Ranks.

Project description:Microorganisms are the core drivers of coal biogeochemistry and are closely related to the formation of coalbed methane. However, it remains poorly understood about the network relationship and stability of microbial communities in coals with different ranks. In this study, a high-throughput sequencing data set was analyzed to understand the microbial co-occurrence network in coals with different ranks including anthracite, medium-volatile bituminous, and high-volatile bituminous. The results showed similar topological properties for the microbial networks among coals with different ranks, but a great difference was found in the microbial composition in different large modules among coals with different ranks, and these three networks had three, four, and four large modules with seven, nine, and nine phyla, respectively. Among these networks, a total of 46 keystone taxa were identified in large modules, and these keystone taxa were different in coals with different ranks. Bacteria dominated the keystone taxa in the microbial network, and these bacterial keystone taxa mainly belonged to phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. Besides, the removal of the key microbial data could reduce the community stability of microbial communities in bituminous coals. A partial least-squares path model further showed that these bacterial keystone taxa indirectly affected methanogenic potential by maintaining the microbial community stability and bacterial diversity. In summary, these results showed that keystone taxa played an important role in determining the community diversity, maintaining the microbial community stability, and controlling the methanogenic potential, which is of great significance for understanding the microbial ecology and the geochemical cycle of coal seams.

Pore Development during the Carbonization Process of Lignin Microparticles Investigated by Small Angle X-ray Scattering.

Project description:Application of low-cost carbon black from lignin highly depends on the materials properties, which might by determined by raw material and processing conditions. Four different technical lignins were subjected to thermostabilization followed by stepwise heat treatment up to a temperature of 2000 °C in order to obtain micro-sized carbon particles. The development of the pore structure, graphitization and inner surfaces were investigated by X-ray scattering complemented by scanning electron microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. Lignosulfonate-based carbons exhibit a complex pore structure with nanopores and mesopores that evolve by heat treatment. Organosolv, kraft and soda lignin-based samples exhibit distinct pores growing steadily with heat treatment temperature. All carbons exhibit increasing pore size of about 0.5-2 nm and increasing inner surface, with a strong increase between 1200 °C and 1600 °C. The chemistry and bonding nature shifts from basic organic material towards pure graphite. The crystallite size was found to increase with the increasing degree of graphitization. Heat treatment of just 1600 °C might be sufficient for many applications, allowing to reduce production energy while maintaining materials properties.

Development of Resistance to Pyrethroid in Culex pipiens pallens Population under Different Insecticide Selection Pressures.

Project description:Current vector control programs are largely dependent on pyrethroids, which are the most commonly used and only insecticides recommended by the World Health Organization for insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). However, the rapid spread of pyrethroid resistance worldwide compromises the effectiveness of control programs and threatens public health. Since few new insecticide classes for vector control are anticipated, limiting the development of resistance is crucial for prolonging efficacy of pyrethroids. In this study, we exposed a field-collected population of Culex pipiens pallens to different insecticide selection intensities to dynamically monitor the development of resistance. Moreover, we detected kdr mutations and three detoxification enzyme activities in order to explore the evolutionary mechanism of pyrethroid resistance. Our results revealed that the level of pyrethroid resistance was proportional to the insecticide selection pressure. The kdr and metabolic resistance both contributed to pyrethroid resistance in the Cx. pipiens pallens populations, but they had different roles under different selection pressures. We have provided important evidence for better understanding of the development and mechanisms of pyrethroid resistance which may guide future insecticide use and vector management in order to avoid or delay resistance.

Effect of Hydration and Carbonation Progress on the Porosity and Permeability of Cement Pastes.

Project description:This paper presents the results of comprehensive cement paste porosity and gas permeability tests. The tests conducted concerned ordinary Portland cement (OPC) cement pastes with varying water-cement ratios ranging from 0.3 to 0.6. The tests were conducted after the curing of cement paste for 90 days and two years under laboratory conditions. Open porosity was determined using three methods: helium pycnometry, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and water saturation. Permeability was determined using a modified RILEM-Cembureau method. The results obtained demonstrated that permeability does not change significantly over time despite the observed material shifts in open porosity characteristics caused both by further progress in hydration and by the carbonation process that occurs. The results of the tests conducted also permitted the quantitative determination of the impact of the water-cement ratio, age, and the progress of carbonation on open porosity measured using different methods and also on the gas permeability of the pastes.

The upper percolation threshold and porosity-permeability relationship in sandstone reservoirs using digital image analysis.

Project description:Subsurface sandstone deposits represent globally ubiquitous reservoirs which can potentially provide the characteristics necessary for the effective geological storage of CO2. Geological carbon storage is widely agreed to be a key asset in tackling anthropogenic emissions and climate change to reach a sustainable 'net zero', despite the present financial challenges associated with it. Therefore, improved understanding of the characteristics of the materials in which we plan to store many gigatons of CO2 is critical. Developing cheaper characterisation techniques is therefore crucial to support the global push for net zero. In this work we use digital analysis of 3D microscale X-ray images of a range of sandstone samples to constrain the porosity-permeability relationship and the upper percolation threshold; the point at which near full pore structure connectivity is achieved. This is one of the most significant controls on the viability of carbon storage as a practical solution to achieving net zero. We find that the upper percolation threshold in sandstone occurs at ca. 14% total porosity whilst the relationship between porosity ([Formula: see text]) and permeability ([Formula: see text]) can be defined as [Formula: see text]. The investigation of the upper percolation threshold may allow a target criterion to be designated when assessing potential carbon storage reservoirs, whilst investigation of the porosity-permeability relationship allows for a greater understanding of the fluid flow regimes in the subsurface. By using a digital technique to assess carbon storage reservoir potentiality we show that initial characterisation of reservoirs can be carried out rapidly and relatively economically, prior to further full reservoir characterisation studies. This approach is also non-destructive, allowing samples to be reused and multiple analytical phases performed on the same materials.
