Soil Fungal Community in Grazed Inner Mongolian Grassland Adjacent to Coal-Mining Activity.

ABSTRACT: Coal mining results in reduced soil quality and makes environments less stable. Soil fungi are suitable indicators of soil quality for monitoring purposes. Here, the objective was therefore to investigate the effects of grazing and mining on the composition of the soil fungal community at the periphery of an opencast coal-mine dump in the Shengli mining area, Xilingol League, Inner Mongolia. A total of 2,110 fungal operational taxonomic units were identified and subdivided into 81 orders and nine categories, based on trophic modes. The sensitive factor to mining was soil pH, and that to grazing were soil nitrate-nitrogen and alkaline phosphatase activity. According to the Pearson correlation and Mantel test, we propose interactions between grazing and coal-mining exist a co-effect and could regulate edaphic variables to alter the behavior of soil fungal community. Moreover, compared with coal-mining, grazing has a greater impact on it. The results provide a basis to further clarify soil fungal ecological functions, and may also contribute to the practice of soil remediation and environmental management in coal-mining areas.

Project description:A "grazing ban" policy has been implemented in some pastoral areas in China to fence degraded grasslands for restoration. However, fencing increased grazing pressures in unmanaged grasslands. Based on the mechanism of negative edge effect, we investigated whether overgrazing on unmanaged grassland interfered with the restoration of adjacent grazing-banned grassland by affecting soil properties and microbial community using a sample in Hulun Buir of Inner Mongolia, in order to optimize the "grazing ban" policy. Plant and soil were sampled in areas 30 m away from the fence in unmanaged grassland (UM) and in areas 30 m (adjacent to UM) and 30-60 m (not adjacent to UM) away from the fence in the grazing-banned grassland (F-30 m and F-60 m). The species richness and diversity of plant communities and the ASV number of fungal communities significantly decreased in F-30 m and UM, and the Simpson index of the bacterial community significantly decreased in F-30 m compared with F-60 m. The abundance of fungi involved in soil organic matter decomposition significantly decreased and the abundance of stress-resistant bacteria significantly increased, while the abundance of bacteria involved in litter decomposition significantly decreased in UM and F-30 m compared with F-60 m. The simplification of plant communities decreased in soil water and total organic carbon contents can explain the variations of soil microbial communities in both UM and F-30 m compared with F-60 m. The results of PLS-PM show that changes in plant community and soil microbial function guilds in UM may affect those in F-30 m by changing soil water and total organic carbon contents. These results indicate that overgrazing on unmanaged grassland interfered with the restoration of adjacent grazing-banned grassland by affecting soil properties and microbial community. The grazing-banned grasslands should be adjusted periodically in order to avoid negative edge effects.

Project description:Land conversion to agriculture is an important factor affecting soil ecological processes in the desert grasslands of northern China. However, soil fungal-community structure and function in response to Land conversion remain unclear. In this study, desert grassland, artificial shrubland, and land conversion were investigated in the western part of the Mu Us Sandland (Yanchi, Ningxia; Dingbian, Shaanxi). We found that land conversion significantly increased soil total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, and available phosphorous and potassium contents. In the early stage of conversion to agricultural (April), soil fungal operational taxonomic units and abundance-based coverage estimator were lower than those of dessert grasslands and shrubland plots and had significant correlations with pH, electric conductivity, and available phosphorus and potassium. The dominant phyla strongly correlated with soil physicochemical properties. Concomitantly, the relative abundance of Glomeromycota was significantly lower, and the complexity of the network in the land conversion plots was lower than that in the shrubland plots. In the late stage of land conversion (September), soil fungal operational taxonomic units and abundance-based coverage estimator were lower in the conversion plots than in the desert grassland plots, with more complex network relationships compared to the desert grassland or shrubland plots. Symbiotrophic groups, a functional group of desert grassland soil fungi, can be used as a predictor of environmental change; in addition, land conversion decreases the relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal functional groups. Our study highlights the response of soil fungal communities and functions to human disturbances in desert grasslands. Considering the potential of land conversion to agriculture to influence soil secondary salinization, there is a need for continued observation of soil ecological health over the time continuum of land conversion to agriculture.
