Psychometric evaluation of Nurse Professional Competence Scale-Short-form Chinese language version among nursing graduate students.

ABSTRACT:

Aim

The aim of the study was to determine the psychometric properties, construct validity and internal consistency of the Chinese language version of the Nurse Professional Competence scale short form.

Design

A methodological design was used.

Methods

Questionnaire data from 260 nursing students nearing graduation from 2 universities in China were analysed using confirmatory factor analysis, known-group validity and internal consistency.

Results

The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the model was acceptable, and the analyses for known-group validity revealed statistically significant differences in all factors and the total scale of the Nurse Professional Competence scale short form. Internal consistency revealed that Cronbach's alpha values exceeded 0.70 for all factors and the total scale. The Chinese language version of the Nurse Professional Competence scale short form has acceptable construct validity and good internal consistency.

Project description:BackgroundDuring education it is essential for nursing students to develop professionalism in nursing. Nurses are placed in situations based on trust, and it is crucial that their patients have confidence in them to provide professional and safe care. A key period in nursing students' development of a professionalism occurs during training when students gain knowledge and skills that separate nurses as professional healthcare workers from laypeople. The purpose of this study was to investigate nursing students' experiences of professional competence development during education.MethodsA longitudinal study was carried out using qualitative content analysis with a manifest inductive approach. Thirty-four students enrolled in a Swedish three-year nursing program, from August 2015 to January 2017 were interviewed on four occasions.ResultsThe results revealed that students' professional role developed gradually. The students' started their education with dreams and a naive understanding of the profession, but their understanding of the complexity of the nursing profession gradually evolved. Students became theoretically equipped at the university and developed clinical skills through practice. Students' focus went from mastering medical technology to a more holistic approach. Before graduating, students felt ready but not fully trained.ConclusionsOur findings indicate a discrepancy between the content of the theoretical education and the clinical settings since students identified a lack of evidence-based practice. A solid theoretical education before entering clinical training offered students possibilities for reflecting on evidence-based practice and the clinical settings. The realization that there is always potential for professional improvement can be interpreted as an emerging awareness, and development of professionalism. It is clear that students could benefit from increased collaborative work between clinical supervisors and faculty staff at the university.

Project description:IntroductionEuropean societies are rapidly becoming multicultural. Cultural diversity presents new challenges and opportunities to communities that receive immigrants and migrants, and highlights the need for culturally safe healthcare. Universities share a responsibility to build a fair and equitable society by integrating cultural content in the nursing curricula. This paper aims to analyze European student nurses´ experience of learning cultural competence and of working with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.Materials and methodsA phenomenological approach was selected through a qualitative research method. 7 semi-structured focus groups with 5-7 students took place at the participants' respective universities in Spain, Belgium, Turkey and Portugal.Results5 themes and 16 subthemes emerged from thematic analysis. Theme 1, concept of culture/cultural diversity, describes the participants' concept of culture; ethnocentricity emerged as a frequent element in the students' discourse. Theme 2, personal awareness, integrates the students' self-perception of cultural competence and their learning needs. Theme 3, impact of culture, delves on the participants' perceived impact of cultural on both nursing care and patient outcomes. Theme 4, learning cultural competence, integrates the participants' learning experiences as part of their nursing curricula, as part of other academic learning opportunities and as part of extra-academic activities. Theme 5, learning cultural competence during practice placements, addresses some important issues including witnessing unequal care, racism, prejudice and conflict, communication and language barriers, tools and resources and positive attitudes and behaviors witnesses or displayed during clinical practice.ConclusionThe participants' perceived level of cultural competence was variable. All the participants agreed that transcultural nursing content should be integrated in the nursing curricula, and suggested different strategies to improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes. It is important to listen to the students and take their opinion into account when designing cultural teaching and learning activities.

Project description:BackgroundClinical education is a significant part of medical education, and paying attention to clinical evaluation is important. One of the challenges in the teaching-learning process is evaluating students' performance. Learners, as the main stakeholders of the educational system, may have different experiences of evaluation quality. Awareness of these experiences is effective in improving the quality of clinical evaluation. Therefore, this study was conducted to "explore the experiences of nursing students for evaluation of professional competence by using the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)".MethodThis study was conducted with a qualitative descriptive research approach and conventional content analysis method in 2022-2024. The participants included 12 undergraduate nursing students at Maragheh University of Medical Sciences, who were selected by purposeful sampling, and their experiences were collected using semi-structured and in-depth interviews until reaching data saturation.ResultsThe data analysis of the interviews led to the extraction of 268 primary codes, 7 subcategories, 2 categories, and 1 theme: "Credibility and stability". The category "Exam's accuracy in measuring competence " included 3 sub-categories: "Challenges in objective adaptation ", " Communication and organizational challenges for exam preparation " and " Inadequate simulation of stations and exam environment ", and the category " Exam power for repeatability" included 4 sub-categories: " Characteristics of the students ", " Lack of evaluators' skills and mastery ", " Inefficiency of the evaluation tool " and " Disturbance in executive affairs".ConclusionsOSCE can be used in self-evaluation, creating motivation and strengthening different dimensions of students' learning, as well as discovering weaknesses and strengths for planning by managers and faculties. According to the results of this study, many factors such as management before and during the exam, characteristics of the evaluators, prevailing educational conditions in the faculty, and the method of clinical training are effective in achieving the "reliability and sustainability" required in the OSCE.

Project description:IntroductionMeasuring nurses' cultural competence is an important aspect in monitoring the acceptable quality in multicultural populations, and is a means for efficient modification of the educational process of nurses based on this assessment.PurposeThe goal of this article is to offer a preliminary assessment of the cultural competence of nurses based on a Polish-language and -culture version of the Nurse Cultural Competence Scale (NCCS).Research methodAn adaptive and diagnostic cross-disciplinary concept was used in the research. Two hundred thirty-eight professionally active nurses in the southeast region of Poland took part in this study. The NCCS-Polish version (NCCS-P) questionnaire was used after linguistic adaptation and analysis of psychometric properties.ResultsModerate levels of competence in the Cultural Knowledge Subscale (M = 3.42) were found in the group of nurses studied. The results indicate lowest competency levels in the Cultural Skill Subscale (M = 3.14). The highest values were obtained for the Cultural Awareness Subscale (M = 3.98) and the Cultural Sensitivity Subscale (M = 3.72). The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient for the NCCS-P scale was 0.94, with the subscale values ranging from 0.72 to 0.95. Factor validity analysis of the Polish adaptation of the NCCS-P scale pointed to its four-factor structure. The Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin sampling adequacy test was 0.905, and the Bartlett test of sphericity result was χ2 = 5755.107; df = 820; p<0.001. The four-factor structure is affirmed by the Kaiser criterion and the scree test result.ConclusionsThe NCCS-P psychometric properties were highly reliable and significant because of the opportunity for using them for research in Poland.Practical implicationsThe scale can be used in intercultural research for comparing cultural competence of nurses, including Polish ones. This scale facilitates the precise monitoring of cultural competence among nurses and nurse managers, which may help in developing nursing policies geared toward a commitment to expanding cultural competence.
