Project description:Molecular and macromolecular templates are known to affect the shape, size, and polymorph selectivity on the biomineralization of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Micro- and nanoparticles of common polymers present in the environment are beginning to show toxicity in living organisms. In this study, the role of plastic nanoparticles in the biomineralization of CaCO3 is explored to understand the ecological impact of plastic pollution. As a model study, luminescent poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles (PMMA-NPs) were prepared using the nanoprecipitation method, fully characterized, and used for the mineralization experiments to understand their influence on nucleation, morphology, and polymorph selectivity of CaCO3 crystals. The PMMA-NPs induced calcite crystal nucleation with spherical morphologies at high concentrations. Microplastic particles collected from a commercial face scrub were also used for CaCO3 nucleation to observe the nucleation of calcite crystals on the particle surface. Microscopic, spectroscopic, and X-ray diffraction data were used to characterize and identify the nucleated crystals. The data presented in this paper add more information on the impact of microplastics on the marine environment.

Project description:In this work, we studied the CO2 absorption mechanism by nonaqueous solvent comprising hindered amine 2-[(1,1-dimethylethyl)amino]ethanol (TBAE) and ethylene glycol (EG). The NMR and FTIR results indicated that CO2 reacted with an -OH group of EG rather than the -OH of TBAE by producing hydroxyethyl carbonate species. A possible reaction pathway was suggested, which involves two steps. In the first step, the acid-base reaction between TBAE and EG generated the anion HO-CH2-CH2-O-; in the second step, the O- of HO-CH2-CH2-O- attacked the C atom of CO2, forming carbonate species.

Project description:Subcutaneous injection of concentrated protein and peptide solutions, in the range of 100-400 mg/mL, is often not possible with a 25- to 27-gauge needle, as the viscosity can be well above 50 cP. Apparent viscosities below this limit are reported for suspensions of milled lysozyme microparticles up to nearly 400 mg/mL in benzyl benzoate or benzyl benzoate mixtures with safflower oils through a syringe with a 25- to 27-gauge needle at room temperature. These apparent viscosities were confirmed using a cone-and-plate rheometer. The intrinsic viscosity regressed from the Kreiger-Dougherty model was only slightly above the Einstein value of 2.5, indicating the increase in viscosity relative to that of the solvent was caused primarily by the excluded volume. Thus, the increases in viscosity from electrical double layer interactions (electroviscous effects), solvation of the particles, or deviations of the particle shape from a spherical geometry were minimal, and much smaller than typically observed for proteins dissolved in aqueous solutions. The small electroviscous effects are expected given the negligible zeta potential and thin double layers in the low dielectric constant organic solvent. The suspensions were resuspendable after a year, with essentially constant particle size after two months as measured by static light scattering. The lower apparent viscosities for highly concentrated protein suspensions relative to protein solutions, coupled with these favorable characteristics upon resuspension, may offer novel opportunities for subcutaneous injection of therapeutic proteins.

Project description:Efficient and sustainable separation of metals is gaining increasing attention, because of the essential roles of many metals in sustainable technologies for a climate-neutral society, such as rare earths in permanent magnets and cobalt, nickel, and manganese in the cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries. The separation and purification of metals by conventional solvent extraction (SX) systems, which consist of an organic phase and an aqueous phase, has limitations. By replacing the aqueous phase with other polar solvents, either polar molecular organic solvents or ionic solvents, nonaqueous solvent extraction (NASX) largely expands the scope of SX, since differences in solvation of metal ions lead to different distribution behaviors. This Review emphasizes enhanced metal extraction and remarkable metal separations observed in NASX systems and discusses the effects of polar solvents on the extraction mechanisms according to the type of polar solvents and the type of extractants. Furthermore, the considerable effects of the addition of water and complexing agents on metal separations in terms of metal ion solvation and speciation are highlighted. Efforts to integrate NASX into metallurgical flowsheets and to develop closed-loop solvometallurgical processes are also discussed. This Review aims to construct a framework of NASX on which many more studies on this topic, both fundamental and applied, can be built.

Project description:Cross-scale self-similar hierarchical micro-nano structures in living systems often provide unique features on surfaces and serve as inspiration sources for artificial materials or devices. For instance, a highly self-similar structure often has a higher fractal dimension and, consequently, a larger active surface area; hence, it would have a super surface performance compared to its peer. However, artificial self-similar surfaces with hierarchical micro-nano structures and their application development have not yet received enough attention. Here, by introducing solvent-assisted UV-lasering, we establish an elegant approach to fabricate self-similar hierarchical micro-nano structures on silicon. The self-similar structure exhibits a super hydrophilicity, a high light absorbance (>90%) in an ultra-broad spectrum (200-2500 nm), and an extraordinarily high efficiency in heat transfer. Through further combinations with other techniques, such surfaces can be used for capillary assembling soft electronics, surface self-cleaning, and so on. Furthermore, such an approach can be transferred to other materials with minor modifications. For instance, by doping carbon in polymer matrix, a silicone surface with hierarchical micro-nano structures can be obtained. By selectively patterning such hierarchical structures, we obtained an ultra-high sensitivity bending sensor. We believe that such a fabrication technique of self-similar hierarchical micro-nano structures may encourage researchers to deeply explore the unique features of functional surfaces with such structures and to further discover their potentials in various applications in diverse directions.

Project description:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is becoming more attractive as a renewable feedstock for chemical synthesis. In this study, CO2 was incorporated into poly(ether carbonate) (PEC) polyols by using a double-metal-cyanide catalyst. By adjusting the CO2 pressure, the content of propylene carbonate units in the PEC polyols was controlled, indicating successful and semiquantitative incorporation of CO2 into the PEC polyols. Polyurethane foams (PUFs) with different propylene carbonate content were easily prepared at room temperature by employing the PEC polyols due to their adequate viscosity under ambient conditions. The firmness of the PUFs increased as the amount of propylene carbonate units increased due to the rigidity of the carbonate linkage, representing predictable mechanical properties. Interestingly, reduced generation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the PUFs, namely acetaldehyde, was observed with a high content of propylene carbonate units at 120 °C, indicating good stability of the carbonate units against thermo-oxidative decomposition. This study demonstrates the importance of CO2 as an environmental-friendly and renewable resource that can provide not only industrially important but also problem-solving products in terms of processability and low generation of VOCs.

Project description:Currently, organic phosphorescent particles are heavily used in sensing and imaging. Up to now, most of these particles contain poisonous and/or expensive metal complexes. Environmentally friendly systems are therefore highly desired. A purely amorphous system consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) particles with incorporated N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzidine emitter molecules is presented in this work. Single particles with sizes between 400 and 840 nm show-depending on the environment-bright fluorescence and phosphorescence. The latter is observed when oxygen is not in the proximity of the emitting dye molecules. These particles can scavenge singlet oxygen, which is produced during the photoexcitation process, by incorporating it into the polymer matrix. This renders their use to be unharmful for the surrounding matter with possible application in marking schemes for living bodies.

Project description:Composite microparticles of CaCO3 and two pectin samples (which differ by the functional group ratio) or corresponding nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes with different molar ratios (0.5, 0.9 and 1.2) are obtained, characterized and tested for loading and release of streptomycin and kanamycin sulphate. The synthesized carriers were characterized before and after drug loading in terms of morphology (by SEM using secondary electron and energy selective backscattered electron detectors), porosity (by water sorption isotherms) and elemental composition (by elemental mapping using energy dispersive X-ray and FTIR spectroscopy).
