Complete Terahertz Polarization Control with Broadened Bandwidth via Dielectric Metasurfaces.

ABSTRACT: We demonstrate terahertz dielectric metasurfaces with anisotropic multipoles within the framework of the generalized Huygens principle, in which the interference among these multipoles achieves giant phase shift with broadened bandwidth and high transmission coefficients. More importantly, owing to the anisotropic design, various phase delays between π/2 and 3π/2 are obtained, which convert the incident linearly polarized terahertz wave into right/left-handed circularly polarized light, elliptically polarized light and cross-polarized light. Both simulation and experimental results verify complete terahertz polarization control with the ellipticity ranging from 1 to - 1, which paves a way for polarization-related applications of terahertz meta-devices.

Independent Amplitude Control of Arbitrary Orthogonal States of Polarization via Dielectric Metasurfaces.

Project description:Exquisite polarization control using optical metasurfaces has attracted considerable attention thanks to their ability to manipulate multichannel independent wavefronts with subwavelength resolution. Here we present a new class of metasurface polarization optics, which enables imposition of two arbitrary and independent amplitude profiles on any pair of orthogonal states of polarization. The implementation method involves a polarization-dependent interference mechanism achieved by constructing a metasurface composed of an array of nanoscale birefringent waveplates. Based on this principle, we experimentally demonstrate chiral grayscale metasurface and chiral shadow rendering of structured light. These results illustrate a general approach interlinking amplitude profiles and orthogonal states of polarization and expands the scope of metasurface polarization shaping optics.

Bifunctional Manipulation of Terahertz Waves with High-Efficiency Transmissive Dielectric Metasurfaces.

Project description:Multifunctional terahertz (THz) devices in transmission mode are highly desired in integration-optics applications, but conventional devices are bulky in size and inefficient. While ultra-thin multifunctional THz devices are recently demonstrated based on reflective metasurfaces, their transmissive counterparts suffer from severe limitations in efficiency and functionality. Here, based on high aspect-ratio silicon micropillars exhibiting wide transmission-phase tuning ranges with high transmission-amplitudes, a set of dielectric metasurfaces is designed and fabricated to achieve efficient spin-multiplexed wavefront controls on THz waves. As a benchmark test, the photonic-spin-Hall-effect is experimentally demonstrated with a record high absolute efficiency of 92% using a dielectric metasurface encoded with geometric phases only. Next, spin-multiplexed controls on circularly polarized THz beams (e.g., anomalous refraction and focusing) are experimentally demonstrated with experimental efficiency reaching 88%, based on a dielectric meta-device encoded with both spin-independent resonant phases and spin-dependent geometric phases. Finally, high-efficiency spin-multiplexed dual holographic images are experimentally realized with the third meta-device encoded with both resonant and geometric phases. Both near-field and far-field measurements are performed to characterize these devices, yielding results in agreement with full-wave simulations. The study paves the way to realize multifunctional, high-performance, and ultra-compact THz devices for applications in biology sensing, communications, and so on.

Dielectric metasurfaces for complete and independent control of the optical amplitude and phase.

Project description:Metasurfaces are optically thin metamaterials that promise complete control of the wavefront of light but are primarily used to control only the phase of light. Here, we present an approach, simple in concept and in practice, that uses meta-atoms with a varying degree of form birefringence and rotation angles to create high-efficiency dielectric metasurfaces that control both the optical amplitude and phase at one or two frequencies. This opens up applications in computer-generated holography, allowing faithful reproduction of both the phase and amplitude of a target holographic scene without the iterative algorithms required in phase-only holography. We demonstrate all-dielectric metasurface holograms with independent and complete control of the amplitude and phase at up to two optical frequencies simultaneously to generate two- and three-dimensional holographic objects. We show that phase-amplitude metasurfaces enable a few features not attainable in phase-only holography; these include creating artifact-free two-dimensional holographic images, encoding phase and amplitude profiles separately at the object plane, encoding intensity profiles at the metasurface and object planes separately, and controlling the surface textures of three-dimensional holographic objects.

All-dielectric polarization-sensitive metasurface for terahertz polarimetric imaging.

Project description:Terahertz polarimetric imaging, capable of capturing not only intensity profiles but also the polarization states of the incident pattern, is an essential technique with promising applications such as security scans and medical diagnoses. Recently, a novel approach for terahertz imaging has been proposed using a metasurface absorber that converts terahertz light into a temperature profile. However, polarization remains indistinguishable in the imaging process due to the isotropic geometry of the metasurface. To address this issue, this study introduces an all-dielectric, polarization-sensitive metasurface absorber and showcases its suitability for terahertz polarimetric imaging. Optical and thermal simulations confirm that the polarization dependence of our metasurface is translated into the thermal domain, allowing us to distinguish both intensity and polarization states in the incoming image. Additionally, we demonstrate that polarimetric imaging under general, elliptical polarization is attainable. This metasurface facilitates terahertz polarimetric imaging, eliminating the need for complex setups or bulky components, thereby reducing the form factor and enabling widespread use.

Terahertz all-silicon metasurfaces with off-axis bifocal characteristics for polarization detection.

Project description:Functional devices for terahertz (THz) polarization detection in transmission mode are highly desired in integrated applications, but traditional polarization measurement systems are bulky and highly cost. The combination between all-silicon metasurfaces and focused beams carrying polarization information has offered a new opportunity for miniaturized polarization detection behavior. Here, we investigate and experimentally demonstrate a new scheme for realizing efficiently miniaturized polarization detection behavior based on the polarization multiplexing encoding technique. The full-Stokes parameter matrix of the incident polarization state can be reconstructed in a single snapshot by using a microprobe to record, pixel by pixel, the complex amplitude information contained in a pre-designed plane. Subsequently, the polarization detection capability of the proposed design principle is evaluated using random polarization states defined on the surface of a standard Poincaré sphere (PS). Such a scheme offers potential applications for the development of compact photonic meta-platforms for polarization detection in transmission mode, being highly favored in polarization high-resolution imaging, remote sensing, and THz communications.

Reconfigurable metasurfaces that enable light polarization control by light.

Project description:Plasmonic metasurfaces have recently attracted much attention because of their novel characteristics with respect to light polarization and wave front control on deep-subwavelength scales. The development of metasurfaces with reconfigurable optical responses is opening new opportunities in high-capacity communications, real-time holograms and adaptive optics. Such tunable devices have been developed in the mid-infrared spectral range and operated in light intensity modulation schemes. Here we present a novel optically reconfigurable hybrid metasurface that enables polarization tuning at optical frequencies. The functionality of tuning is realized by switching the coupling conditions between the plasmonic modes and the binary isomeric states of an ethyl red switching layer upon light stimulation. We achieved more than 20° nonlinear changes in the transmitted polarization azimuth using just 4 mW of switching light power. Such design schemes and principles could be easily applied to dynamically adjust the functionalities of other metasurfaces.

Enhanced optical encryption via polarization-dependent multi-channel metasurfaces.

Project description:Optical encryption offers a powerful platform for secure information transfer, combining low power consumption, high-speed transmission, and intuitive visualization. Metasurfaces, with their unprecedented ability to manipulate light across multiple degrees of freedom within quasi-two-dimensional nanostructures, are emerging as promising devices for advanced encryption. However, encryption capacity remains constrained by limited information channels. Here, we present a visual secret sharing (VSS) scheme utilizing metasurfaces with multiple polarization-dependent channels and minimized crosstalk. Using a global optimization strategy for nanostructure geometries across the entire metasurface, we successfully realize eight independent polarization channels with negligible crosstalk. By encoding both the key and information into these channels with a modified VSS scheme, we demonstrate the complete recovery of seven plaintexts. This strategy supports scalable, high-capacity encryption, and can incorporate additional optical degrees of freedom, offering advanced solutions for advanced secure communication, information storage, and anti-counterfeiting.

Dual-Wavelength Terahertz Metasurfaces with Independent Phase and Amplitude Control at Each Wavelength.

Project description:We have designed, fabricated and characterized dual-wavelength metasurfaces that function at two assigned terahertz wavelengths with independent phase and amplitude control at each wavelength. Specifically, we have designed a dual-wavelength achromatic metasurface-based deflector deflecting the incident wave to the same direction at two selected wavelengths, which has circumvented the critical limitation of strong wavelength dependence in the planar metasurface-based devices caused by the resonant nature of the plasmonic structures. As a proof of concept demonstration, the designed dual-wavelength achromatic deflector has been fabricated, and characterized experimentally. The numerical simulations, theoretical predictions, and experimental results agree very well with each other, demonstrating the property of independently manipulating the phase profiles at two wavelengths. Furthermore, another unique feature of the designed metasurface is that it can independently tailor both the phase and amplitude profiles at two wavelengths. This property has been numerically validated by engineering a metasurface-based device to simultaneously generate two diffraction orders at two desired wavelengths.

Coupling-enabled chirality in terahertz metasurfaces.

Project description:Chirality prevails in nature and is of great value for molecular biology, medicine, and bioscience. Due to the enhancement of chiroptical responses, chiral metasurfaces has attracted enormous attentions. In this paper, some novel polarization-sensitive transmission effects in terahertz chiral metasurfaces are exhibited. In the chiral metasurfaces whose unit cell consists of two basic resonators - a wire and a split ring resonator (SRR), we observe the asymmetrical transmission for circularly polarized state from the circular cross-polarization conversion spectra and the circular conversion dichroism (CCD). More importantly, we verify that the chiroptical activities can be affected by the coupling between the two resonators by simply moving their relative position in the terahertz metasurfaces. From the experimental and simulated results, we observe the distinguished variation in the circular cross-polarization conversion spectra and CCD, and combining with the theoretical analysis using coupled mode theory, we reveal that the chirality of the metasurfaces is strongly correlated to the coupling between the two modes determined by the wire and SRR. Finally, we demonstrate the coupling-enabled chirality by investigating the dependence of CCD on the coupling discrepancy with different relative positions of the two resonators. These findings offer the insights into the relationship between chirality and mode coupling and provide a theoretical method to design chiral metasurfaces and enhance the circular conversion dichroism, which have potential applications in the fields such as optical sensing, polarization imaging, and biological/chemical detection.

Terahertz Pulse Generation from GaAs Metasurfaces.

Project description:Ultrafast optical excitation of select materials gives rise to the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses. This effect has enabled the field of THz time-domain spectroscopy and led to the discovery of many physical mechanisms behind THz generation. However, only a few materials possess the required properties to generate THz radiation efficiently. Optical metasurfaces can relax stringent material requirements by shifting the focus onto the engineering of local electromagnetic fields to boost THz generation. Here we demonstrate the generation of THz pulses in a 160 nm thick nanostructured GaAs metasurface. Despite the drastically reduced volume, the metasurface emits THz radiation with efficiency comparable to that of a thick GaAs crystal. We reveal that along with classical second-order volume nonlinearity, an additional mechanism contributes strongly to THz generation in the metasurface, which we attribute to surface nonlinearity. Our results lay the foundation for engineering of semiconductor metasurfaces for efficient and versatile THz radiation emitters.
