The role of borosilicate glass in Miller-Urey experiment.

ABSTRACT: We have designed a set of experiments to test the role of borosilicate reactor on the yielding of the Miller-Urey type of experiment. Two experiments were performed in borosilicate flasks, two in a Teflon flask and the third couple in a Teflon flask with pieces of borosilicate submerged in the water. The experiments were performed in CH₄, N₂, and NH₃ atmosphere either buffered at pH 8.7 with NH₄Cl or unbuffered solutions at pH ca. 11, at room temperature. The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy results show important differences in the yields, the number of products, and molecular weight. In particular, a dipeptide, multi-carbon dicarboxylic acids, PAHs, and a complete panel of biological nucleobases form more efficiently or exclusively in the borosilicate vessel. Our results offer a better explanation of the famous Miller's experiment showing the efficiency of borosilicate in a triphasic system including water and the reduced Miller-Urey atmosphere.

The Fracture Modes of Biomimetic Borosilicate Glass Protective Composite.

Project description:The biomimetic structures in nature, such as shells, turtles, and other scaly organisms, inspire the design of transparent protective composites for enhancing their anti-penetration performance. Here, we designed the borosilicate glass composites with nacreous and tortoiseshell structures and examined their mechanical properties and damage mechanisms under high-speed impact using ballistics experiments. The effects of arrangements and tablet size on the dynamic performance of borosilicate glass composites were also investigated. The results suggest that the biomimetic structure exhibits better impact performance than traditional composites with whole plate structure. Using the biomimetic structure, the average damage area is decreased by 57.6-66.5% and the average energy dissipation is increased around 5% for the transparent composites. Compared to the aligned arrangements, the staggered arrangement of tablets is more beneficial to the anti-penetration when the staggered point is positioned symmetrically. In addition, the tablet size also plays a significant role, where a small tablet can decrease the average damage area around 15.4-24.1% and increase the average energy dissipation up to 4.2%. Therefore, the tortoiseshell structure with the staggered arrangement of small tablets is an optimal combination of the design parameters, which exhibits the best ballistic performance among other configurations due to the substantial enhancement of the locking effect at the tablet interface. This study provides valuable insights into the impact performance and fracture mode of the biomimetic structural composites, especially for the transparent armors of glass materials.

Pore graded borosilicate bioactive glass scaffolds: in vitro dissolution and cytocompatibility.

Project description:3D borosilicate bioactive glass (1393B20 and B12.5MgSr) scaffolds were prepared by robocasting, with and without a dense layer at the top. Pore graded scaffolds are promising as they allow for membrane deposition and could limit the risk of soft tissue infiltration. In vitro dissolution was studied in tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) and Simulated Body Fluid (SBF). 1393B20 scaffolds dissolved faster than B12.5MgSr in TRIS whereas they dissolved slower in SBF. The difference in dissolution profiles, as a function of the medium used, is assigned to the different rates of precipitation of hydroxyapatite (HA). While the precipitation of calcium phosphate (CaP) in the form of HA, first sign of bioactivity, was confirmed by ICP, FTIR-ATR and SEM-EDX analysis for both compositions, 1393B20 was found to precipitate HA at a faster rate. The presence of a dense top layer did not significantly impact the dissolution rate and CaP precipitation. In vitro cell culture was performed using human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs). Prior to cell plating, a preincubation of 3 days was found optimum to prevent burst ion release. In direct contact, cells proliferate and spread on the scaffolds while maintaining characteristic spindle morphology. Cell plated on 1393B20 scaffolds showed increased viability when compared to cell plated on B12.5MgSr. The lower cell viability, when testing B12.5MgSr, was assigned to the depletion of Ca2+ ions from culture medium and higher pH. Static cell culture leads to believe that the scaffold produced from the 1393B20 glass composition are promising in bone regeneration applications.

A one-step synthesis of rare-earth phosphate-borosilicate glass composites.

Project description:A new 1-step method for synthesizing glass-ceramic composites consisting of rare earth phosphates (REPO4) dispersed in borosilicate glass (BG) is reported herein as an alternative to the 2-step approach that is traditionally used. The effect of annealing time and annealing temperature on the formation of the 1-step glass-ceramic composites was investigated. Backscattered electron images and energy dispersive X-ray maps were collected to observe the morphology and chemical distribution in the glass-ceramic composites. X-ray diffraction was used to study the long-range order and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy was used to study the local environment of La, Y, P and Si. All analyses showed glass-ceramic composites made by the 1 and 2-step methods were similar to each other except for the Si L2,3-edge XANES spectra, which showed a slight change between the glass-ceramic composite materials made by the different synthesis methods. Xenotime-type phosphates (YPO4) were observed to be more soluble in the borosilicate glass than the monazite-type phosphates (LaPO4). This was attributed to the difference in the field strength of the rare-earth ions as a result of the difference in the ionic radii. Glass-ceramic composites made by the 1-step method were shown to form in 1 day at 1100 °C and in 3 days at 1000 °C without a significant change in glass or ceramic composition compared to the 1-step composite synthesized at 1100 °C for 3 days.

Magnetic Glass Ceramics by Sintering of Borosilicate Glass and Inorganic Waste.

Project description:Ceramics and glass ceramics based on industrial waste have been widely recognized as competitive products for building applications; however, there is a great potential for such materials with novel functionalities. In this paper, we discuss the development of magnetic sintered glass ceramics based on two iron-rich slags, coming from non-ferrous metallurgy and recycled borosilicate glass. The substantial viscous flow of the glass led to dense products for rapid treatments at relatively low temperatures (900-1000 °C), whereas glass/slag interactions resulted in the formation of magnetite crystals, providing ferrimagnetism. Such behavior could be exploited for applying the obtained glass ceramics as induction heating plates, according to preliminary tests (showing the rapid heating of selected samples, even above 200 °C). The chemical durability and safety of the obtained glass ceramics were assessed by both leaching tests and cytotoxicity tests.

Evaluation of mesoporous borosilicate glass-ceramic composites as frits in reference electrodes.

Project description:The development of new mesoporous frits for reference electrodes to overcome the limitations of cross-contamination and screening effect is essential for many electrochemical measurements. Available frit-based reference electrodes (e.g., mesoporous, microporous) still suffer from cross-contamination and/or errors in electrochemical measurements. In this work, a mesoporous glass-ceramic composite is prepared to mitigate such limitations. Mesoporous glass-ceramic frits were prepared from low-cost materials (i.e., borosilicate and kaolin) at relatively low temperatures (750-850 °C). The prepared glass-ceramic frits were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), impedance measurements, and nitrogen sorption isotherms. The developed mesoporous glass-ceramic composites are characterized by a high chemical resistance against corrosive materials and a low thermal expansion. Reference electrodes constructed with the developed mesoporous glass-ceramic frits exhibited a low flow rate of 0.002 ± 0.001 to 0.41 ± 0.06 μL h-1 and high potential stability as well as very small potential drift of -2.4 ± 0.2 to -4.9 ± 0.2 μV h-1. Mesoporous glass-ceramic based reference electrodes exhibited average potential variations of 13 ± 3 mV over the concentration range of 1 mM to 0.1 M KCl. This indicates that mesoporous glass-ceramic frit-based reference electrodes exhibited a much lower flow rate compared to available microporous frit-based reference electrodes. Moreover, the developed mesoporous ceramic-based reference electrodes exhibited a 4-15-fold improvement in potential variations and a large improvement in potential stability in comparison with the reported mesoporous-frit-based reference electrodes.

Borosilicate Glass-Ceramics Containing Zirconolite and Powellite for RE- and Mo-Rich Nuclear Waste Immobilization.

Project description:In order to increase the loading of rare earth- and molybdenum-rich high-level waste in the waste forms, zirconolite- and powellite-based multi-phase borosilicate glass-ceramics were synthesized via an in-situ heat treatment method. The effects of the CTZ (CaO, TiO2 and ZrO2) content on the crystallization, microstructure and aqueous durability of the multi-phase borosilicate glass-ceramics were studied. The results indicate that the increase of CTZ content can promote crystallization. The glass-ceramics presented even structures when the CTZ content was ≥ 40 wt%. For the glass-ceramic with 40 wt% CTZ, only zirconolite and powellite crystals were detected and powellite crystals were mainly distributed around zirconolite, whereas for the glass-ceramics with 50 wt% CTZ, perovskite was detected. Furthermore, the leaching rates of Na, Ca, Mo and Nd were in the ×10-3, ×10-4, ×10-3 and ×10-5 g·m-2·d·-1 orders of magnitude on the 28th leaching day, respectively.

Dual stimulus responsive borosilicate glass (BSG) scaffolds promote diabetic alveolar bone defectsrepair by modulating macrophage phenotype.

Project description:The regeneration of alveolar bone is still clinical challenge, particularly accompanied with diabetes, causing metabolic disorder with a protracted low-grade inflammatory phenotype. As a result, the anticipated loading of biomaterials is highly suspicious in spontaneous modulation of cells function, which is mostly disturbed by constant inflammation. In this study, we developed glucose and hydrogen peroxide dual-responsive borosilicate glass (BSG) scaffolds loaded with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) to synergistically modulate the abnormal inflammation of diabetic alveolar bone defects. It was found that the release of EGCG by BSG could directly regulate the shift of macrophages from M1 to the M2 phenotype by promoting autophagy and lessening the inhibition of autophagic flux. Moreover, EGCG can also indirectly regulate the polarization phenotype of macrophages by reducing the activation of NF-κb in stem cells and restoring its immunoregulatory capacity. Therefore, the addition of EGCG to BSG scaffold in diabetes allows for a more striking modulation of the macrophage phenotype in a timely manner. The altered macrophage phenotype reduces local inflammation and thus increases the ability to repair diabetic alveolar bone, showing promise for the treatment of alveolar defect in diabetic patients.

On the Morphology of the SDS Film on the Surface of Borosilicate Glass.

Project description:Surfactant films on solid surfaces have attracted much attention because of their scientific interest and applications, such as surface treatment agent, or for micro- or nano-scale templates for microfluidic devices. In this study, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions with various charged inorganic salts was spread on a glass substrate and dried to form an SDS thin film. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to observe the micro-structure of the SDS thin film. The effects of inorganic salts on the morphology of the SDS film were observed and discussed. The results of experiments demonstrated that pure SDS film formed patterns of long, parallel, highly-ordered stripes. The existence of the inorganic salt disturbed the structure of the SDS film due to the interaction between the cationic ion and the anionic head groups of SDS. The divalent ion has greater electrostatic interaction with anionic head groups than that of the monovalent ion, and causes a gross change in the morphology of the SDS film. The height of the SDS bilayer measured was consistent with the theoretical value, and the addition of the large-sized monovalent ion would lead to lowering the height of the adsorbed structures.

Precise Correlation of Contact Area and Forces in the Unstable Friction between a Rough Fluoroelastomer Surface and Borosilicate Glass.

Project description:Stick-slip friction of elastomers arises due to adhesion, high local strains, surface features, and viscous dissipation. In situ techniques connecting the real contact area to interfacial forces can reveal the contact evolution of a rough elastomer surface leading up to gross slip, as well as provide high-resolution dynamic contact areas for improving current slip models. Samples with rough surfaces were produced by the same manufacturing processes as machined seals. In this work, a machined fluoroelastomer (FKM) hemisphere was slid against glass, and the stick-slip behavior was captured optically in situ. The influence of sliding velocity on sliding behavior was studied over a range of speeds from 1 µm/s to 100 µm/s. The real contact area was measured from image sequences thresholded using Otsu's method. The motion of the pinned region was delineated with a machine learning scheme. The first result is that, within the macroscale sticking, or pinned phase, local pinned and partial slip regions were observed and modeled as a combined contact with contributions to friction by both regions. As a second result, we identified a critical velocity below which the stick-slip motion converted from high frequency with low amplitude to low frequency with high amplitude. This study on the sliding behavior of a viscoelastic machined elastomer demonstrates a multi-technique approach which reveals precise changes in contact area before and during pinning and slip.

Fast and intense green emission of Tb(3+) in borosilicate glass modified by Cu(.).

Project description:We present photoluminescence properties of Tb(3+) doped borosilicate glasses modified by Cu(+). Around 5-time enhanced emission at 541 nm due to the superposed emission of Tb(3+) and Cu(+) is observed under the deep UV excitation. Excitation spectra demonstrate a greatly increased absorption of Tb(3+) ions in the deep UV region towards the Cu(+) excitation band, while the shortened Cu(+) emission lifetime of glasses in association with presence of Tb(3+) ions implies an energy transfer process from Cu(+) to Tb(3+) ions. Meanwhile, the Tb(3+) emission lifetime is significantly shortened from the conventional millisecond level (~4 ms) to the microsecond regime up to around 90 μs. This most likely starts with the role of Cu(+) as a co-activator by initiating the d-f orbital hybridization process via an interaction with Tb(3+), thus relaxing the spin forbidden transition of Tb(3+) ions to the partially allowed one. Moreover, combination of emissions from Cu(+) and Tb(3+) ions generates a composite green emission with adjustable CIE (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage) chromaticity coordinates achievable by co-doping Cu(+)/Tb(3+) in the different ratio and/or altering the excitation wavelength from deep UV to near UV region.
