Project description:Indium oxide (In2O3) is a promising catalyst for selective CH3OH synthesis from CO2 but displays insufficient activity at low reaction temperatures. By screening a range of promoters (Co, Ni, Cu, and Pd) in combination with In2O3 using flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) synthesis, Ni is identified as the most suitable first-row transition-metal promoter with similar performance as Pd-In2O3. NiO-In2O3 was optimized by varying the Ni/In ratio using FSP. The resulting catalysts including In2O3 and NiO end members have similar high specific surface areas and morphology. The main products of CO2 hydrogenation are CH3OH and CO with CH4 being only observed at high NiO loading (≥75 wt %). The highest CH3OH rate (∼0.25 gMeOH/(gcat h), 250 °C, and 30 bar) is obtained for a NiO loading of 6 wt %. Characterization of the as-prepared catalysts reveals a strong interaction between Ni cations and In2O3 at low NiO loading (≤6 wt %). H2-TPR points to a higher surface density of oxygen vacancy (Ov) due to Ni substitution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis of the used catalysts suggest that Ni cations can be reduced to Ni as single atoms and very small clusters during CO2 hydrogenation. Supportive density functional theory calculations indicate that Ni promotion of CH3OH synthesis from CO2 is mainly due to low-barrier H2 dissociation on the reduced Ni surface species, facilitating hydrogenation of adsorbed CO2 on Ov.

Project description:Despite the large number of studies on the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to CO and hydrocarbons by metal nanoparticles, the nature of the active sites and the reaction mechanism have remained unresolved. This hampers the development of effective catalysts relevant to energy storage. By investigating the structure sensitivity of CO2 hydrogenation on a set of silica-supported Ni nanoparticle catalysts (2-12 nm), we found that the active sites responsible for the conversion of CO2 to CO are different from those for the subsequent hydrogenation of CO to CH4. While the former reaction step is weakly dependent on the nanoparticle size, the latter is strongly structure sensitive with particles below 5 nm losing their methanation activity. Operando X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy results showed that significant oxidation or restructuring, which could be responsible for the observed differences in CO2 hydrogenation rates, was absent. Instead, the decreased methanation activity and the related higher CO selectivity on small nanoparticles was linked to a lower availability of step edges that are active for CO dissociation. Operando infrared spectroscopy coupled with (isotopic) transient experiments revealed the dynamics of surface species on the Ni surface during CO2 hydrogenation and demonstrated that direct dissociation of CO2 to CO is followed by the conversion of strongly bonded carbonyls to CH4. These findings provide essential insights into the much debated structure sensitivity of CO2 hydrogenation reactions and are key for the knowledge-driven design of highly active and selective catalysts.

Project description:We show that transport differences between two commonly used global chemical transport models, GEOS-Chem and TM5, lead to systematic space-time differences in modeled distributions of carbon dioxide and sulfur hexafluoride. The distribution of differences suggests inconsistencies between the transport simulated by the models, most likely due to the representation of vertical motion. We further demonstrate that these transport differences result in systematic differences in surface CO2 flux estimated by a collection of global atmospheric inverse models using TM5 and GEOS-Chem and constrained by in situ and satellite observations. While the impact on inferred surface fluxes is most easily illustrated in the magnitude of the seasonal cycle of surface CO2 exchange, it is the annual carbon budgets that are particularly relevant for carbon cycle science and policy. We show that inverse model flux estimates for large zonal bands can have systematic biases of up to 1.7 PgC/year due to large-scale transport uncertainty. These uncertainties will propagate directly into analysis of the annual meridional CO2 flux gradient between the tropics and northern midlatitudes, a key metric for understanding the location, and more importantly the processes, responsible for the annual global carbon sink. The research suggests that variability among transport models remains the largest source of uncertainty across global flux inversion systems and highlights the importance both of using model ensembles and of using independent constraints to evaluate simulated transport.

Project description:Previous studies have identified δ-Ni5Ga3 as a promising catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol at atmospheric pressure. Given its recent discovery, the current understanding of this catalyst is very limited. Additionally, the presence of multiple thermodynamically stable crystal phases in the Ni/Ga system complicates the experiments and their interpretation. Conventional synthesis methods often result in the production of unwanted phases, potentially leading to incorrect conclusions. To address this issue, this study focuses on the synthesis of pure δ-Ni5Ga3 using magnetron sputtering deposition followed by low-temperature H2 annealing. Extensive characterization confirmed the reproducible synthesis of well-defined δ-Ni5Ga3 thin films. These films, deposited directly into state-of-the-art μ-reactors, demonstrated methanol production at low temperatures and maintained a high stability over time. This method allowed for detailed surface and bulk characterization before and after the reaction, providing a comprehensive understanding of the deactivation mechanism. Our findings significantly contribute to the understanding of the Ni/Ga system and its behavior during catalytic activity, deactivation, and regeneration. This study also sets an example of how physical synthesis methods such as magnetron sputtering can be effectively employed to investigate complex catalytic systems, offering a viable alternative to more elaborate chemical methods.

Project description:Ni and NiSn supported on zirconia (ZrO2) and on indium (In)-incorporated zirconia (InZrO2) catalysts were prepared by a wet chemical reduction route and tested for hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol in a fixed-bed isothermal flow reactor at 250 °C. The mono-metallic Ni (5%Ni/ZrO2) catalysts showed a very high selectivity for methane (99%) during CO2 hydrogenation. Introduction of Sn to this material with the following formulation 5Ni5Sn/ZrO2 (5% Ni-5% Sn/ZrO2) showed the rate of methanol formation to be 0.0417 μmol/(gcat·s) with 54% selectivity. Furthermore, the combination NiSn supported on InZrO2 (5Ni5Sn/10InZrO2) exhibited a rate of methanol formation 10 times higher than that on 5Ni/ZrO2 (0.1043 μmol/(gcat·s)) with 99% selectivity for methanol. All of these catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, CO2-temperature-programmed desorption, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. Addition of Sn to Ni catalysts resulted in the formation of a NiSn alloy. The NiSn alloy particle size was kept in the range of 10-15 nm, which was evidenced by HRTEM study. DFT analysis was carried out to identify the surface composition as well as the structural location of each element on the surface in three compositions investigated, namely, Ni28Sn27, Ni18Sn37, and Ni37Sn18 bimetallic nanoclusters, and results were in agreement with the STEM and electron energy-loss spectroscopy results. Also, the introduction of "Sn" and "In" helped improve the reducibility of Ni oxide and the basic strength of catalysts. Considerable details of the catalytic and structural properties of the Ni, NiSn, and NiSnIn catalyst systems were elucidated. These observations were decisive for achieving a highly efficient formation rate of methanol via CO2 by the H2 reduction process with high methanol selectivity.

Project description:This research discusses the CO2 valorization via hydrogenation over the non-noble metal clusters of Ni and Cu supported on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The Ni and Cu catalysts were characterized by conventional techniques including XRD, AFM, ATR, Raman imaging, and TPR and were tested via the hydrogenation of CO2 at 1 bar. The transition-metal-based catalyst designed with atom-economy principles presents stable activity and good conversions for the studied processes. At 1 bar, the rise in operating temperature during CO2 hydrogenation increases the CO2 conversion and the selectivity for CO and decreases the selectivity for methanol on Cu/CN catalysts. For the Ni/CN catalyst, the selectivity to light hydrocarbons, such as CH4, also increased with rising temperature. At 623 K, the conversion attained ca. 20%, with CH4 being the primary product of the reaction (CH4 yield >80%). Above 700 K, the Ni/CN activity increases, reaching almost equilibrium values, although the Ni loading in Ni/CN is lower by more than 90% compared to the reference NiREF catalyst. The presented data offer a better understanding of the effect of the transition metals' small metal cluster and their coordination and stabilization within g-C3N4, contributing to the rational hybrid catalyst design with a less-toxic impact on the environment and health. Bare g-C3N4 is shown as a good support candidate for atom-economy-designed catalysts for hydrogenation application. In addition, cytotoxicity to the keratinocyte human HaCaT cell line revealed that low concentrations of catalysts particles (to 6.25 μg mL-1) did not cause degenerative changes.

Project description:The saturation of octahydrophenanthrene was the rate-determining step in the hydrogenation process from phenanthrene to perhydrophenanthrene, which was due to the steric hindrance and competitive adsorption of octahydrophenanthrene. In this work, a series of Ni/NiAlOx catalysts with a uniform electron-deficient state of Ni derived from the nickel aluminate structure was synthesized to overcome the disadvantage of noble catalyst and the traditional sulfided catalysts in the saturation hydrogenation process of phenanthrene. Results showed that the catalyst calcinated at 650°C possessed more Ni2+ (∼98%) occupying octahedral sites and exhibited the highest robs (1.53 × 10-3 mol kg-1 s-1) and TOF (14.64 × 10-3 s-1) for phenanthrene hydrogenation. Furthermore, its ability to overcome steric hindrance and promote the rate-determining step was proven by octahydrophenanthrene hydrogenation. Comparing the evolution of hydrogenation activity with the change in the electronic structure of surface Ni sites, it was shown that the increase of metallic electron deficiency hindered the π-back bonding between surface Ni and aromatic rings, which was unfavorable for aromatic adsorption. As a result, the phenanthrene hydrogenation saturation performance can be enhanced by stabilizing the electron-deficient state of surface Ni on an optimal degree.

Project description:For overall water electrolysis, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is severely limited by the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, replacing the OER with a more favorable anodic oxidation reaction with remarkable kinetics is of paramount significance, especially the one that can produce value-added chemicals. Moreover, time-saving and cost-effective strategies for the fabrication of electrodes are helpful for the wide application of electrolysis. Herein, thermodynamically more favorable iodide electrooxidation over Ni doped Co(OH)2 nanosheet arrays (NSAs) in alkaline solution is presented as the alternative to the OER to boost the HER. And the active species are determined to be the reverse redox of the Co(iv)/Co(iii) couple. Remarkably, a negative shift of voltage of 320 mV is observed at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 after using iodide electrolysis to replace ordinary water splitting. The synthetic strategy and iodide oxidation in this work expand the application of Co-based materials in the field of energy-saving hydrogen production.

Project description:PdH-based catalysts hold promise for both CO2 reduction to CO and the hydrogen evolution reaction. Density functional theory is used to systematically screen for stability, activity, and selectivity of transition metal dopants in PdH. The transition metal elements Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Ag, Cd, Hf, Ta, W, and Re are doped into PdH(111) surface with six different doping configurations: single, dimer, triangle, parallelogram, island, and overlayer. We find that several dopants, such as Ti and Nb, have excellent predicted catalytic activity and CO2 selectivity compared to the pure PdH hydride. In addition, they display good stability due to their negative doping formation energy. The improved performance can be assigned to reaction intermediates forming two bonds consisting of one C-Metal and one O-Metal bond on the PdH surface, which break the scaling relations of intermediates, and thus have stronger HOCO* binding facilitating CO2 activation.

Project description:Titanium dioxide is the only known material that can enable gas-phase CO2 photocatalysis in its anatase and rutile polymorphic forms. Materials engineering of polymorphism provides a useful strategy for optimizing the performance metrics of a photocatalyst. In this paper, it is shown that the less well known rhombohedral polymorph of indium sesquioxide, like its well-documented cubic polymorph, is a CO2 hydrogenation photocatalyst for the production of CH3OH and CO. Significantly, the rhombohedral polymorph exhibits higher activity, superior stability and improved selectivity towards CH3OH over CO. These gains in catalyst performance originate in the enhanced acidity and basicity of surface frustrated Lewis pairs in the rhombohedral form.
