Linguistic-Cultural Mediation in Asylum and Refugee Settings and Its Emotional Impact on Arabic-Spanish Interpreters.

ABSTRACT: Emotional factors in linguistic-cultural mediation have attracted the attention of prior literature for a number of decades, both regarding the cognitive processes involved in language interpreting and the impact of stress and emotion on the performance of interpreters. However, research has not yet been replicated in the Arabic-Spanish pair, despite it being one of the combinations most requested by public services in Spain and Europe.

Methodology

An exploratory study conducted by an anonymous online 17-item survey was carried out in order to discover the perception of Arabic-Spanish interpreters in asylum and refugee settings about the emotional impact of their job. Out of 30 contacted, 23 active interpreters completed the survey.

Results

The answers showed that all of the interpreters had been exposed to situations that had emotionally impacted them. Triggering situations and a list of negative emotions were collected.

Discussion

Direct and indirect implications of the referred emotional episodes and their consequences on the performance of the interpreters were analysed and discussed.

Conclusions

Linguistic-cultural mediation in these settings exposes interpreters to harsh stories that trigger mostly negative emotions. These professionals lack psychological support; thus, they are forced to deal individually with each situation, without taking into account the possible consequences on their work and their physical and mental health.

Project description:ObjectiveOur objective was to (1) evaluate the linguistic and cultural acceptability of a Spanish translation of the Ohio State University traumatic brain injury identification method (OSU TBI-ID) and (2) to assess the usability and acceptability of a tablet-based version of this instrument in a cohort of Spanish-dominant older adults.SettingUniversity clinical research center and local community center.ParticipantsCommunity-dwelling Spanish-dominant adults age 50 years or older without dementia residing in the Bay Area of California (N=22).DesignCross-sectional cohort study.Main outcome measuresQualitative assessment of linguistic or cultural acceptability of a Spanish translation of the OSU TBI-ID as well as usability or acceptability of a tablet-based self-administered version of this instrument.ResultsThe Spanish translation had high linguistic and cultural acceptability and was further optimized based on participant feedback. Cognitive interviews to review survey wording revealed high levels of homogeneity in the clinical definitions and synonyms given by participants-for example, results for the clinical term "Quedó Inconsciente/Pérdida (temporal) de la conciencia" (To be unconscious/[Temporary] loss of consciousness) used in the survey included "perder el conocimiento" (loss of consciousness), "knockeado" (knocked out), "No es que esté dormida, porque está inconsciente, pero su corazón está todavía palpitando" (it's not that they're sleeping, because they're unconscious, but their heart is still palpitating). The tablet interface had low observer-based usability, revealing that participants with <13 years of education (n=6) had more difficulty using the tablet which could be improved with minor changes to the coding of the application and minimal in-person technology support. Acceptability of the tool was low among all but 1 participant.ConclusionThis linguistically optimized Spanish translation of the OSU TBI-ID is recommended for use as a semistructured interview among Spanish-dominant older adults. Although the tablet-based instrument may be used by interviewers as an efficient electronic case report form among older adults, further research is needed, particularly among older adults with varying levels of education, to validate this instrument as a self-administered survey.

Project description:BackgroundResearch for effective psychological interventions for refugee and asylum-seeking children has intensified. The need for interventions in environments more easily accessed by children and families is especially relevant for newly arrived populations. This paper reviews the literature on school and community-based interventions aimed at reducing psychological disorders in refugee and asylum-seeking children.Methods and findingsComprehensive searches were conducted in seven databases and further information was obtained through searching reference lists, grey literature, and contacting experts in the field. Studies were included if they reported on the efficacy of a school or community-based mental health intervention for refugee or asylum-seeking children. Two independent reviewers made the final study selection, extracted data, and reached consensus on study quality. Results were summarized descriptively. The marked heterogeneity of studies excluded conducting a meta-analysis but study effect-sizes were calculated where possible. Twenty one studies met inclusion criteria for the review reporting on interventions for approximately 1800 refugee children. Fourteen studies were carried out in high-income countries in either a school (n = 11) or community (n = 3) setting and seven studies were carried out in refugee camps. Interventions were either primarily focused on the verbal processing of past experiences (n = 9), or on an array of creative art techniques (n = 7) and others used a combination of these interventions (n = 5). While both intervention types reported significant changes in symptomatology, effect sizes ranged from 0.31 to 0.93 and could mainly be calculated for interventions focusing on the verbal processing of past experiences.ConclusionsOnly a small number of studies fulfilled inclusion criteria and the majority of these were in the school setting. The findings suggest that interventions delivered within the school setting can be successful in helping children overcome difficulties associated with forced migration.
