Project description:Challenges exist in the wastewater treatment of dyes produced by the world's growing textiles industry. Common problems facing traditional wastewater treatments include low retention values and breaking the chemical bonds of some dye molecules, which in some cases can release byproducts that can be more harmful than the original dye. This research illustrates that track-etched polycarbonate filtration membranes with 100-nanometer diameter holes can be functionalized with azo dye direct red 80 at 1000 µM, creating a filter that can then be used to remove the entire negatively charged azo dye molecule for a 50 µM solution of the same dye, with a rejection value of 96.4 ± 1.4%, at a stable flow rate of 114 ± 5 µL/min post-functionalization. Post-functionalization, Na+ and NO3- ions had on average 17.9%, 26.0%, and 31.1% rejection for 750, 500, and 250 µM sodium nitrate solutions, respectively, at an average flow rate of 177 ± 5 µL/min. Post-functionalization, similar 50 µM azo dyes had increases in rejection from 26.3% to 53.2%. Rejection measurements were made using ultraviolet visible-light spectroscopy for dyes, and concentration meters using ion selective electrodes for Na+ and NO3- ions.

Project description:The fluorescence of the SKC-513 ((E)-N-(9-(4-(1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecan-16-yl)phenyl)-6-(butyl(3-sulfopropyl)amino)-3H-xanthen-3-ylidene)-N-(3-sulfopropyl)butan-1-aminium) dye is shown experimentally to have high sensitivity to binding of the K(+) ion. Computations are used to explore the potential origins of this sensitivity and to make some suggestions regarding structural improvements. In the absence of K(+), excitation is to two nearly degenerate states, a neutral (N) excited state with a high oscillator strength, and a charge-transfer (CT) state with a lower oscillator strength. Binding of K(+) destabilizes the CT state, raising its energy far above the N state. The increase in fluorescence quantum yield upon binding of K(+) is attributed to the increased energy of the CT state suppressing a nonradiative pathway mediated by the CT state. The near degeneracy of the N and CT excited states can be understood by considering SKC-513 as a reduced symmetry version of a parent molecule with 3-fold symmetry. Computations show that acceptor-donor substituents can be used to alter the relative energies of the N and CT state, whereas a methylene spacer between the heterocycle and phenylene groups can be used to increase the coupling between these states. These modifications provide synthetic handles with which to optimize the dye for K(+) detection.

Project description:Understanding the mechanisms of lithium-ion transport in polymers is crucial for the design of polymer electrolytes. We combine modular synthesis, electrochemical characterization, and molecular simulation to investigate lithium-ion transport in a new family of polyester-based polymers and in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). Theoretical predictions of glass-transition temperatures and ionic conductivities in the polymers agree well with experimental measurements. Interestingly, both the experiments and simulations indicate that the ionic conductivity of PEO, relative to the polyesters, is far higher than would be expected from its relative glass-transition temperature. The simulations reveal that diffusion of the lithium cations in the polyesters proceeds via a different mechanism than in PEO, and analysis of the distribution of available cation solvation sites in the various polymers provides a novel and intuitive way to explain the experimentally observed ionic conductivities. This work provides a platform for the evaluation and prediction of ionic conductivities in polymer electrolyte materials.

Project description:Mixed layers of 6-hydroxy-5-[(4-sulfophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonate (Sunset Yellow, SSY) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) at the air-water interface were studied using vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) and dynamic surface tension measurements. In the bulk, addition of C16TAB to SSY aqueous solution causes substantial changes in UV/vis absorption spectra, which originate from strong electrostatic interactions between the anionic SSY azo dye with the cationic C16TAB surfactant. These interactions are a driving force for the formation of SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. The latter are found to be highly surface active while free SSY molecules show no surface activity. Dynamic SFG as well as surface tension measurements at low SSY concentrations reveal that free C16TAB surfactants adsorb at the air-water interface on time scales <1 s where they initially form the dominating surface species, but on longer time scales free C16TAB is exchanged by SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. This causes a dramatic reduction of the surface tension to 35 mN/m but also in foam stability. These changes are accompanied by a substantial loss in SFG intensity from O-H stretching bands around 3200 and 3450 cm-1, which we relate to a decrease in surface charging due to adsorption of ion pairs with no or negligible net charges. For SSY/C16TAB molar ratios >0.5, the O-H bands in SFG spectra are reduced to very low intensities and are indicative to electrically neutral SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. This conclusion is corroborated by an analysis of macroscopic foams, which become highly instable in the presence of neutral SSY/C16TAB ion pairs. From an analysis of SFG spectra of air-water interfaces, we show that the electrostatic repulsion forces inside the ubiquitous foam films are reduced and thus remove the major stabilization mechanism within macroscopic foam.

Project description:The potential disrupting effects of Azo dye on wastewater nutrients removal deserved more analysis. In this study, 15 days exposure experiments were conducted with alizarin yellow R (AYR) as a model dye to determine whether the dye caused adverse effects on biological removal of both the dye and nutrients in acclimated anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactors. The results showed that the AYR removal efficiency was, respectively, 85.7% and 66.8% at AYR concentrations of 50 and 200 mg l-1, while higher AYR inlet (400 mg l-1) might inactivate sludge. Lower removal of AYR at 200 mg l-1 of AYR was due to the insufficient support of electron donors in the anaerobic process. However, the decolorized by-products p-phenylenediamine and 5-aminosalicylic were completely decomposed in the following aerobic stage at both 50 and 200 mg l-1 of AYR concentrations. Compared with the absence of AYR, the presence of 200 mg l-1 of AYR decreased the total nitrogen removal efficiency from 82.4 to 41.1%, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency initially decreased to 68.1% and then returned to around 83.4% in the long-term exposure time. It was also found that the inhibition of AYR, nitrogen and COD removal induced by a higher concentration of AYR was due to the increased intracellular reactive oxygen species production, which caused the rise of oxidation-reduction potential value and decreased ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase activities.

Project description:Graphene electrodes are investigated for electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) with lithium ion electrolyte, the focus being the effect of the pore size distribution (PSD) of electrode with respect to the solvated and desolvated electrolyte ions. Two graphene electrode coatings are examined: a low specific surface area (SSA) xGNP-750 coating and a high SSA coating based on a-MWGO (activated microwave expanded graphene oxide). The study comprises an experimental and a computer modeling part. The experimental part includes fabrication, material characterization and electrochemical testing of an EDLC with xGNP-750 coating electrodes and electrolyte 1M LiPF6 in EC:DMC. The computational part includes simulations of the galvanostatic charge-discharge of each EDLC type, based on a continuum ion transport model taking into account the PSD of electrodes, as well as molecular modeling to determine the parameters of the solvated and desolvated electrolyte ions and their adsorption energies with each type of electrode pore surface material. Predictions, in agreement with the experimental data, yield a specific electrode capacitance of 110 F g-1 for xGNP-750 coating electrodes in electrolyte 1M LiPF6 in EC:DMC, which is three times higher than that of the high SSA a-MWGO coating electrodes in the same lithium ion electrolyte.

Project description:In this data article, we introduce data acquired from new adsorbent, bi-metalized chitosan particle that is successfully synthesized and applied to remove the orange II dye, an azo dye, from textile wastewater. The adsorbent was meso- and macro-porous material with BET surface area of 12.69 m(2)/g and pHzpc 6.6. The simulated textile-wastewater can be significantly treated using a relatively low quantity of the adsorbent. Overall, the use of bi-metalized chitosan particle can be considered a promising method for eliminating the azo dye from wastewater effectively. Accordingly, these data will be useful for decolorizing of azo dyes from textile wastewater.

Project description:Azo dyes, which are characterized by one or more azo bonds, are a predominant class of colorants used in tattooing, cosmetics, foods, and consumer products. These dyes are mainly metabolized by bacteria to colorless aromatic amines, some of which are carcinogenic, by azoreductases that catalyze a NAD(P)H-dependent reduction. The resulting amines are further degraded aerobically by bacteria. Some bacteria have the ability to degrade azo dyes both aerobically and anaerobically. Plant-degrading white rot fungi can break down azo dyes by utilizing a number of oxidases and peroxidases as well. In yeast, a ferric reductase system participates in the extracellular reduction of azo dyes. Recently, two types of azoreductases have been discovered in bacteria. The first class of azoreductases is monomeric flavin-free enzymes containing a putative NAD(P)H binding motif at their N-termini; the second class is polymeric flavin dependent enzymes which are studied more extensively. Azoreductases from bacteria represent novel families of enzymes with little similarity to other reductases. Dissociation and reconstitution of the flavin dependent azoreductases demonstrate that the non-covalent bound flavin prosthetic group is required for the enzymatic functions. In this review, structures and carcinogenicity of azo colorants, protein structure, enzymatic function, and substrate specificity, as well as application of the azo dyes and azoreductases will be discussed.

Project description:Despite the considerable efforts made to use silicon anodes and composites based on them in lithium-ion batteries, it is still not possible to overcome the difficulties associated with low conductivity, a decrease in the bulk energy density, and side reactions. In the present work, a new design of an electrochemical cell, whose anode is made in the form of silicene on a graphite substrate, is presented. The whole system was subjected to transmutation neutron doping. The molecular dynamics method was used to study the intercalation and deintercalation of lithium in a phosphorus-doped silicene channel. The maximum uniform filling of the channel with lithium is achieved at 3% and 6% P-doping of silicene. The high mobility of Li atoms in the channel creates the prerequisites for the fast charging of the battery. The method of statistical geometry revealed the irregular nature of the packing of lithium atoms in the channel. Stresses in the channel walls arising during its maximum filling with lithium are significantly inferior to the tensile strength even in the presence of polyvacancies in doped silicene. The proposed design of the electrochemical cell is safe to operate.

Project description:Using first-principles structure searching with density-functional theory (DFT), we identify a novel Fm3?m phase of Cu2P and two low-lying metastable structures, an I4?3d-Cu3P phase and a Cm-Cu3P11 phase. The computed pair distribution function of the novel Cm-Cu3P11 phase shows its structural similarity to the experimentally identified Cm-Cu2P7 phase. The relative stability of all Cu-P phases at finite temperatures is determined by calculating the Gibbs free energy using vibrational effects from phonon modes at 0 K. From this, a finite-temperature convex hull is created, on which Fm3?m-Cu2P is dynamically stable and the Cu3-x P (x < 1) defect phase Cmc21-Cu8P3 remains metastable (within 20 meV/atom of the convex hull) across a temperature range from 0 to 600 K. Both CuP2 and Cu3P exhibit theoretical gravimetric capacities higher than contemporary graphite anodes for Li-ion batteries; the predicted Cu2P phase has a theoretical gravimetric capacity of 508 mAh/g as a Li-ion battery electrode, greater than both Cu3P (363 mAh/g) and graphite (372 mAh/g). Cu2P is also predicted to be both nonmagnetic and metallic, which should promote efficient electron transfer in the anode. Cu2P's favorable properties as a metallic, high-capacity material suggest its use as a future conversion anode for Li-ion batteries; with a volume expansion of 99% during complete cycling, Cu2P anodes could be more durable than other conversion anodes in the Cu-P system, with volume expansions greater than 150%.
