Project description:Lanthanide cuprates of formula Ln?CuO? exist in two principal forms, T and T' which are renowned for their exhibition at low temperatures of hole and electronic types of superconductivity, respectively. These structures differ primarily in the arrangement of oxygen between the perovskite layers and also in nature of the copper oxygen planes. The Cu-O distance in the T structure (~1.90 Å) is much shorter than the T' (1.97Å), reflecting a transition between partial Cu?and partial Cu³? character. In seeking to find compositions that bridge these two structure/electron carrier types, we observed the transition from a T structure to a T' type structure, resulting in the metastable form T? with slightly larger volume but similar character to T'. This transition from T to T? is associated with 5% increase in a and a 5% decrease in c parameters of the tetragonal unit cells, which results in disintegration of ceramic bodies.

Project description:Ion transport in nanochannels is crucial for applications in life science, filtration, and energy storage. However, multivalent ion transport is more difficult than the monovalent analogues due to the steric effect and stronger interactions with channel walls, and the ion mobility decreases significantly as temperature decreases. Although many kinds of solid ionic conductors (SICs) have been developed, they can attain practically useful conductivities (0.01 S cm-1) only for monovalent ions above 0 °C. Here, we report a class of versatile superionic conductors, monolayer CdPS3 nanosheets-based membranes intercalated with diverse cations with a high density up to ∼2 nm-2. They exhibit unexpectedly similar superhigh ion conductivities for monovalent (K+, Na+, Li+) and multivalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+), ∼0.01 to 0.8 S cm-1 in the temperature range of -30 ‒ 90 °C, which are one to two orders of magnitude higher than those of the corresponding best SICs. We reveal that the high conductivity originates from the concerted movement of high-density cations in the well-ordered nanochannels with high mobility and low energy barrier. Our work opens an avenue for designing superionic conductors that can conduct various cations and provides possibilities for discovering unusual nanofluidic phenomena in nanocapillaries.

Project description:An important challenge for modelling transport in materials for energy applications is that in most applications they are polycrystalline, and hence it is critical to understand the properties in the presence of grain boundaries. Moreover, most grain boundaries are not pristine stoichiometric interfaces and hence dopants are likely to play a significant role. In this paper, we describe our recent work on using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to model the effect of doped grain boundaries on oxygen transport of fluorite structured UO2. UO2, much like other fluorite grain boundaries, are found to be sinks for oxygen vacancy segregation relative to the grain interior, thus facilitating oxygen transport. Fission products further enhance diffusivity via strong interactions between the impurities and oxygen defects. Doping produces a striking structural alteration in the Σ5 class of grain boundaries that enhances oxygen diffusivity even further. Project description:Na based all-solid-state batteries are a promising technology for large-scale energy storage applications owing to good safety properties and low cost. High performance solid electrolyte materials with high room temperature ionic conductivity, good electrochemical stability and facile synthesis are highly desired for the commercialization of this technology. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel fast Na-ion conductor, cubic Na3SbSe4, with an excellent ionic conductivity of 0.85 mS cm-1 at room temperature, and a group of S doped variants. Na3SbSe4 exhibits good compatibility with metallic Na and good stability in a wide voltage range. The application of this compound as solid electrolyte is demonstrated in all-solid-state Na-ion cells cycled at room temperature.

Project description:Spin-crossover compounds are a class of materials that can change their spin state from high spin (HS) to low spin (LS) by external stimuli such as light, pressure or temperature. Applications demand compounds with defined properties concerning the size and switchability that are maintained when the compound is integrated into composite materials. Here, we report the synthesis of [Fe(Leq)(Lax)]n coordination polymer (CP) nanoparticles using self-assembled polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymer (BCP) micelles as template. Variation of the solvent (THF and toluene) and the rigidity of the axial ligand Lax (Lax = 1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)ethane) (bpea), trans-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)ethene (bpee), and 1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)ethyne) (bpey); Leq = 1,2-phenylenebis(iminomethylidyne)-bis(2,4-pentanedionato)(2-)) allowed the determination of the preconditions for the selective formation of nanoparticles. A low solubility of the CP in the used solvent and a high stability of the Fe-L bond with regard to ligand exchange are necessary for the formation of composite nanoparticles where the BCP micelle is filled with the CP, as in the case of the [FeLeq(bpey)] n @BCP. Otherwise, in the case of more flexible ligands or ligands that lead to high spin complexes, the formation of microcrystals next to the CP-BCP nanoparticles is observed above a certain concentration of [Fe(Leq)(Lax)] n . The core of the nanoparticles is about 45 nm in diameter due to the templating effect of the BCP micelle, independent of the used iron complex and [Fe(Leq)(Lax)] n concentration. The spin-crossover properties of the composite material are similar to those of the bulk for FeLeq(bpea)] n @BCP while pronounced differences are observed in the case of [FeLeq(bpey)] n @BCP nanoparticles.

Project description:Water in contact with mineral interfaces is important for a variety of different processes. Here, we present a combined theoretical/experimental study which provides a quantitative, molecular-level understanding of the ubiquitous and important CaF2/water interface. Our results show that, at low pH, the surface is positively charged, causing a substantial degree of water ordering. The surface charge originates primarily from the dissolution of fluoride ions, rather than from adsorption of protons to the surface. At high pH we observe the presence of Ca-OH species pointing into the water. These OH groups interact remarkably weakly with the surrounding water, and are responsible for the "free OH" signature in the VSFG spectrum, which can be explained from local electronic structure effects. The quantification of the surface termination, near-surface ion distribution and water arrangement is enabled by a combination of advanced phase-resolved Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation spectra of CaF2/water interfaces and state-of-the-art ab initio molecular dynamics simulations which include electronic structure effects.

Project description:Flourite-structure ferroelectrics (FEs) and antiferroelectrics (AFEs) such as HfO2 and its variants have gained copious attention from the semiconductor community, because they enable complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible platforms for high-density, high-performance non-volatile and volatile memory technologies. While many individual experiments have been conducted to characterize and understand fluorite-structure FEs and AFEs, there has been little effort to aggregate the information needed to benchmark and provide insights into their properties. We present a fast and robust modeling framework that automatically fits the Preisach model to the experimental polarization ([Formula: see text]) versus electric field ([Formula: see text]) hysteresis characterizations of fluorite-structure FEs. The modifications to the original Preisach model allow the double hysteresis loops in fluorite-structure antiferroelectrics to be captured as well. By fitting the measured data reported in the literature, we observe that ferroelectric polarization and dielectric constant decrease as the coercive field rises in general.

Project description:Cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) is a prominent halide perovskite with extensive optoelectronic applications. In this study, we report the pressure modulation of CsPbBr3's crystal structure and electronic properties at room temperature up to 5 GPa. We have observed a crystal structure transition from the orthorhombic Pnma space group to a new monoclinic phase in the space group P21/c at 2.08 GPa. The structure is associated with ~8% of density jump across the transition boundary. DFT calculations have suggested that the structure transition leads to a change in the electronic band structure, and there is an emergent indirect bandgap at the Pnma-P21/c phase transition boundary at 2.08 GPa. Across the transition boundary, the electronic band gap of CsPbBr3 increased from 2.07 eV to 2.38 eV, which explains its pressure-induced color change. Our study demonstrates the importance of using in-situ crystal structure in the electronic band structure calculations in halide perovskites.

Project description:The main approach for exploring metastable materials is via trial-and-error synthesis, and there is limited understanding of how metastable materials are kinetically stabilized. In this study, a metastable phase superionic conductor, β-Li3 YCl6 , is discovered through in situ X-ray diffraction after heating a mixture of LiCl and YCl3 powders. While Cl- arrangement is represented as a hexagonal close packed structure in both metastable β-Li3 YCl6 synthesized below 600 K and stable α-Li3 YCl6 above 600 K, the arrangement of Li+ and Y3+ in β-Li3 YCl6 determined by neutron diffraction brought about the cell with a 1/√3 a-axis and a similar c-axis of stable α-Li3 YCl6 . Higher Li+ ion conductivity and lower activation energy for Li+ transport are observed in comparison with α-Li3 YCl6 . The computationally calculated low migration barrier of Li+ supports the low activation energy for Li+ conduction, and the calculated high migration barrier of Y3+ kinetically stabilizes this metastable phase by impeding phase transformation to α-Li3 YCl6 . This work shows that the combination of in situ observation of solid-state reactions and computation of the migration energy can facilitate the comprehension of the solid-state reactions allowing kinetic stabilization of metastable materials, and can enable the discovery of new metastable materials in a short time.

Project description:Antiperovskite Li3OCl superionic conductor films are prepared via pulsed laser deposition using a composite target. A significantly enhanced ionic conductivity of 2.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature is achieved, and this value is more than two orders of magnitude higher than that of its bulk counterpart. The applicability of Li3OCl as a solid electrolyte for Li-ion batteries is demonstrated.
