Goniothalamusroseipetalus and G.sukhirinensis (Annonaceae): Two new species from Peninsular Thailand

ABSTRACT: Abstract Two new Goniothalamus species (Annonaceae), G.roseipetalussp. nov. and G.sukhirinensissp. nov., are described from the southern limits of Peninsular Thailand (Narathiwat and Yala Provinces). Both new species resemble G.macrophyllus, G.scortechinii and G.uvarioides. The addition of these two new species brings the total number of Goniothalamus species in Thailand to 27. Separate identification keys are provided for flowering and fruiting specimens of the Thai species.

Project description:Two new species of Artabotrys (Annonaceae) are described from peninsular Thailand. Artabotrys longipetalus J.Chen & Eiadthong, sp. nov., is unique among Artabotrys species in Thailand in having linear petals, relatively long flower pedicels and sessile monocarps. Artabotrys insurae J.Chen & Eiadthong, sp. nov., resembles Artabotrys uniflorus (Griff.) Craib, but can be distinguished by its oblique leaf base, flat petal blades, apiculate anther connective apex and the presence of a monocarp stipe. In addition, two new records for the Flora of Thailand are reported, viz. Artabotrys crassifolius Hook.f. & Thomson and Artabotrys pleurocarpus Maingay ex Hook.f. & Thomson; both species are so far only known from peninsular Thailand. A key to the 20 species of Artabotrys in Thailand is provided.

Mitrephoramonocarpa (Annonaceae): a new species from Surat Thani Province, Peninsular Thailand.

Project description:A new species, Mitrephoramonocarpa R.M.K.Saunders & Chalermglin, sp. nov. (Annonaceae), is described from Surat Thani Province in Peninsular Thailand. It resembles two other species, M.alba Ridl. and M.keithii Ridl., with which it is broadly sympatric, but can be distinguished by its solitary flowers (not borne in thyrsoid inflorescences as in most other Mitrephora species), single carpel per flower (and hence single monocarp per fruit) and the lack of a monocarp stipe. A key to the nine Mitrephora species in Thailand is provided.

Two new species and two new records of Artabotrys (Annonaceae) from Thailand.

Project description:Two new species of Artabotrys are described from Thailand. Artabotrys tanaosriensis J.Chen, Chalermglin & R.M.K.Saunders, sp. nov., is similar to A. oblanceolatus Craib but differs in its symmetrical, cuneate or decurrent leaf base, externally distinct outer petal blades and claws, deltoid and undulate outer petal blades, rhomboid and undulate inner petal blades and shorter, subsessile and slightly beaked monocarps. Artabotrys spathulatus J.Chen, Chalermglin & R.M.K.Saunders, sp. nov., is most similar to A. tanaosriensis but differs in having flat outer petal blades, broadly rhomboid outer petal claws, broadly spathulate and strongly concave inner petal blades and strongly beaked monocarps. Two new records for the Flora of Thailand are furthermore reported here: A. punctulatus C.Y.Wu ex S.H.Yuan and A. byrsophyllus I.M.Turner & Utteridge, which were previously confused with A. aeneus Ast and A. grandifolius King, respectively. Corybaspapillatus (Orchidaceae), a new orchid species from peninsular Thailand.

Project description:A new species, Corybaspapillatus, is described and illustrated from peninsular Thailand. The new species is easily recognized through a combination of the following characters: the purplish flower, the rounded apex of the dorsal sepal, the outer surface of dorsal sepal covered with irregular papillae in the upper half, the lateral sepals adnate laterally at the base to the connate petals, the V-shaped throat, the labellum bearing short hairs, dentate to erose labellum margins, and well-developed conical spurs. A key to the species of Corybas in Thailand is presented.

Two new species of Trivalvaria (Annonaceae) from northern Myanmar.

Project description:Trivalvaria rubra and Trivalvaria casseabriae, two new species of Annonaceae from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar, are here described and illustrated. They are morphologically similar to T. costata and T. macrophylla. The major differences between them are outlined and discussed. A diagnostic key to the species of Trivalvaria is provided.

A new species and two new records of Goniothalamus (Annonaceae) from Lao PDR.

Project description:Goniothalamus saccopetaloides Y.H. Tan & Bin Yang, a new species is described and illustrated from Laos. This species shows morphological similarities to G. yunnanensis W.T. Wang, but it differs from the latter by having almost fleshy, involute and saccate outer petals, subglobose monocarps, and single seeded monocarps. Goniothalamus cheliensis, and G. calvicarpus are new records for the Flora of Lao PDR. A key to Goniothalamus species indigenous to Laos is provided here.

Two new Phlegmariurus species (Lycopodiaceae) and one new combination from Peninsular Malaysia.

Project description:Two new species, Phlegmariurus iminii Kiew (Lycopodiaceae) from limestone karst and P. monticola Kiew from montane habitats, are described from Peninsular Malaysia and a new combination is made for Phlegmariurus pinifolius (Trevis.) Kiew. Phlegmariurus iminii, known from a single hill threatened by quarrying, is Critically Endangered; while P. monticola and P. pinifolius that are relatively widespread are of Least Concern.

Two new Erythrophylloporus species (Boletaceae) from Thailand, with two new combinations of American species.

Project description:Erythrophylloporus is a lamellate genus in the family Boletaceae that has been recently described from China based on E.cinnabarinus, the only known species. Typical characters of Erythrophylloporus are reddish-orange to yellowish-red basidiomata, including lamellae, bright yellow basal mycelium and smooth, broadly ellipsoid, ellipsoid to nearly ovoid basidiospores. During our survey on diversity of Boletaceae in Thailand, several yellowish-orange to reddish- or brownish-orange lamellate boletes were collected. Based on both morphological evidence and molecular analyses of a four-gene dataset (atp6, tef1, rpb2 and cox3), they were recognised as belonging in Erythrophylloporus and different from the already known species. Two new species, E.paucicarpus and E.suthepensis are therefore introduced from Thailand with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Moreover, two previously described Phylloporus species, P.aurantiacus and P.fagicola, were also revised and recombined in Erythrophylloporus. A key to all known Erythrophylloporus species is provided.

Coleus (Lamiaceae) in Peninsular Malaysia including two new species.

Project description:In Peninsular Malaysia, Coleus is represented by five species. Two, C.hairulii Kiew and C.rafidahiae Kiew, are new species. Both are narrowly endemic and restricted to limestone hills as is C.kunstleri (Prain) A.J.Paton. All three are Critically Endangered. Coleusscutellarioides (L.) Benth., although widespread, is probably not indigenous. It is also a common ornamental, while C.monostachyus (P.Beauv.) A.J.Paton is a recent introduction that has spread rapidly and threatens to become a troublesome weed.

Two new entomopathogenic species of Ophiocordyceps in Thailand.

Project description:Ophiocordyceps is entomopathogenic and the largest studied genus in the family Ophiocordycipitaceae. Many species in this genus have been reported from Thailand. The first new species introduced in this paper, Ophiocordycepsglobiceps, differs from other species based on its smaller perithecia, shorter asci and secondary ascospores and additionally, in parasitising fly species. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF1α and RPB1 sequence data indicate that O.globiceps forms a distinct lineage within the genus Ophiocordyceps as a new species. The second new species, Ophiocordycepssporangifera, is distinguished from closely related species by infecting larvae of insects (Coleoptera, Elateridae) and by producing white to brown sporangia, longer secondary synnemata and shorter primary and secondary phialides. We introduce O.sporangifera based on its significant morphological differences from other similar species, even though phylogenetic distinction is not well-supported.
