Project description:Hierarchical Co(OH)2@NiMoS4 nanocomposites were successfully prepared on a carbon cloth by using a simple two-step hydrothermal method coupled with a room-temperature vulcanization method. The resulting nanocomposites were composed of large-scale uniform Co(OH)2 nanowires fully covered with ultrathin vertical NiMoS4 nanoflakes. Because of the synergetic effect between Co(OH)2 and NiMoS4, the nanocomposites exhibited good electrochemical performance as a supercapacitor electrode. In particular, a specific capacity of 2229 F g-1 was achieved at a current density of 1 A g-1. In addition, an asymmetrical supercapacitor fabricated using activated carbon as the negative electrode and the as-synthesised nanocomposite as the positive electrode exhibited a maximum energy density of 59.5 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1 kW h kg-1 and excellent cycling stability (100% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). These results indicate that the hierarchical Co(OH)2@NiMoS4 nanocomposite has great potential for practical application in high-performance energy storage devices.

Project description:This paper presents the preparation of in situ electrodeposited rGO/MnO2 nanocomposite as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitor application. The work describes and evaluates the performance of prepared electrode via green and facile electrodeposition technique of in situ rGO/MnO2-glucose carbon nanocomposites. The carbon content in the composite electrode increased after GO and D (+) glucose solution has been added in the deposition electrolyte. This study found that a suitable concentration of D (+) glucose in the deposition electrolyte can slow down the nucleation process of MnO2 particles and lead to uniform and ultrathin nanoflakes structure. The optimize electrode exhibited low transfer resistance and resulted on excellent electrochemical performance in three electrolyte systems viz. Na2SO4, KOH and KOH/K3Fe(CN)6 redox electrolytes. The optimum energy density and power density were 1851 Whkg(-1) and 68 kWkg(-1) at current density of 20 Ag(-1) in mixed KOH/K3Fe(CN)6 electrolyte.

Project description:The rapid development of microelectronics has equally rapidly increased the demand for miniaturized energy storage devices. On-chip microsupercapacitors (MSCs), as promising power candidates, possess great potential to complement or replace electrolytic capacitors and microbatteries in various applications. However, the areal capacities and energy densities of the planar MSCs are commonly limited by the low voltage window, the thin layer of the electrode materials and complex fabrication processes. Here, a new-type three-dimensional (3D) tubular asymmetric MSC with small footprint area, high potential window, ultrahigh areal energy density, and long-term cycling stability is fabricated with shapeable materials and photolithographic technologies, which are compatible with modern microelectronic fabrication procedures widely used in industry. Benefiting from the novel architecture, the 3D asymmetric MSC displays an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 88.6 mF cm-2 and areal energy density of 28.69 mW h cm-2, superior to most reported interdigitated MSCs. Furthermore, the 3D tubular MSCs demonstrate remarkable cycling stability and the capacitance retention is up to 91.8% over 12 000 cycles. It is believed that the efficient fabrication methodology can be used to construct various integratable microscale tubular energy storage devices with small footprint area and high performance for miniaturized electronics.

Project description:Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors having high mechanical stability and foldable features are crucial to meet the growing demands for a large number of portable electronic devices such as wearable electronics, displays, touch screens, detectors, etc. Here, we report the fabrication of such a flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor device by using a nanocomposite composed of a snowflake-like dendritic CoNi alloy and reduced graphene oxide ((CoNiD)60-rGO40) as the positive electrode and pure rGO as the negative electrode for the first time. In this device, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel containing 3 M KOH and 0.1 M K4[Fe(CN)6] was used as the electrolyte cum separator. This supercapacitor device offers a high energy density value of 52.8 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 2000 W kg-1. The values of these two key performance parameters are superior to the many commercially available supercapacitors and reported values in the literature. In addition, this device also exhibits retention of ∼95% of its initial specific capacitance value after 4000 cycles at a current density of 2.5 A g-1, displaying its high cycling stability. This supercapacitor is so flexible that no mechanical deformation occurs even after bending at different angles and folding up to 180°, and its specific capacitance value practically remains unaffected when the device was twisted at different bending angles. This flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor device can power a light-emitting diode (LED) and demonstrates its promise to meet the practical applications in energy storage technology.

Project description:We report that lightweight, anisotropic, mechanically flexible, and high performance thermally insulating materials are fabricated by the assembly of graphene oxide (GO) and polyimide (PI). With an appropriate ratio between GO and PI building blocks, the rGO/PI thermally insulating material exhibits hierarchically aligned microstructures with high porosity. These microstructures endow the rGO/PI nanocomposite with low mass density and super-insulating property (extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.012 W m-1 K-1 in the radial direction). Meanwhile, the introduction of PI enhances the mechanical strength and thermal stability of rGO foam. Our rGO/PI nanocomposites as super-insulating foams with a low thermal conductivity are highly attractive for potential thermal insulation applications in aerospace, wearable devices, and energy-efficient buildings.

Project description:One-dimensional alkali metal titanates containing potassium, sodium, and lithium are of great concern owing to their high ion mobility and high specific surface area. When those titanates are combined with conductive materials such as graphene, carbon nanotube, and carbon nanofiber, they are able to be employed as efficient electrode materials for supercapacitors. Potassium hexa-titanate (K2Ti6O13, KTO), in particular, has shown superior electrochemical properties compared to other alkali metal titanates because of their large lattice parameters induced by the large radius of potassium ions. Here, we present porous rGO crumples (PGC) decorated with KTO nanoparticles (NPs) for application to supercapacitors. The KTO NP/PGC composites were synthesized by aerosol spray pyrolysis and post-heat treatment. KTO NPs less than 10 nm in diameter were loaded onto PGCs ranging from 3 to 5 µm. Enhanced porous structure of the composites was obtained by the activation of rGO by adding an excessive amount of KOH to the composites. The KTO NP/PGC composite electrodes fabricated at the GO/KOH/TiO2 ratio of 1:3:0.25 showed the highest performance (275 F g-1) in capacitance with different KOH concentrations and cycling stability (83%) after 2000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1.

Project description:In this research, the energy and shielding efficiency of brick, fabricated by clay soil, as a practical building material was reinforced using CuFe2O4 nanoparticles. Initially, the nanoparticles were fabricated using the sol-gel method and then loaded in the brick matrix as a guest. The architected samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms, and vector network analyzer (VNA) analyses. IR absorption of the tailored samples was monitored under an IR source using an IR thermometer. IR absorption and energy band gap attested that inserting the nanoparticles in brick medium led to the acceleration of a warming brick, desirable for energy efficiency in cold climates. It is worth noting that the brick/CuFe2O4 nanocomposite achieved a strong reflection loss (RL) of 58.54 dB and gained an efficient bandwidth as wide as 4.22 GHz (RL > 10 dB) with a thickness of 2.50 mm, meanwhile it shielded more than 58% of the electromagnetic waves at X-band by only a filler loading of 10 wt%. The microwave absorbing and shielding characteristics of the composite are mainly originated from conductive loss, electron hopping, natural and exchange resonance, relaxation loss, secondary fields, as well as eddy current loss. Interestingly, the shielding property of the nanocomposite was significantly generated from its absorbing features, reducing the secondary electromagnetic pollutions produced by the shielding materials applying the impedance mismatching mechanism.

Project description:Nowadays, wearable energy storage devices have been growing rapidly, but flexible systems with both excellent cycling stability and decent flexibility are still challenging. In this work, a flexible all-solid-state NH4NiPO4·H2O//graphene supercapacitor with remarkable performance was successfully assembled. When cycled at a current density of 5 mA cm-2, the device delivered 121 mF cm-2, and showed good cycling stability after 3,000 cycles. Moreover, the all-solid-state NH4NiPO4·H2O//graphene supercapacitor also exhibit high mechanical flexibility with well-maintained specific capacitance, even under bending to arbitrary angles (up to 180°) and different weights (up to 50 g).

Project description:A lightweight, flexible, and highly efficient energy management strategy is highly desirable for flexible electronic devices to meet a rapidly growing demand. Herein, Ni-Co-S nanosheet array is successfully deposited on graphene foam (Ni-Co-S/GF) by a one-step electrochemical method. The Ni-Co-S/GF composed of Ni-Co-S nanosheet array which is vertically aligned to GF and provides a large interfacial area for redox reactions with optimum interstitials facilitates the ions diffusion. The Ni-Co-S/GF electrodes have high specific capacitance values of 2918 and 2364 F g-1 at current densities of 1 and 20 A g-1, respectively. Using such hierarchical Ni-Co-S/GF as the cathode, a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is further fabricated with polypyrrple(PPy)/GF as the anode. The flexible asymmetric supercapacitors have maximum operation potential window of 1.65 V, and energy densities of 79.3 and 37.7 Wh kg-1 when the power densities are 825.0 and 16100 W kg-1, respectively. It's worth nothing that the ASC cells have robust flexibility with performance well maintained when the devices were bent to different angles from 180° to 15° at a duration of 5 min. The efficient electrochemical deposition method of Ni-Co-S with a preferred orientation of nanosheet arrays is applicable for the flexible energy storage devices.

Project description:Despite being among the most researched energy storage devices, supercapacitors have often suffered from their relatively low operating voltage and energy density, which greatly limit their practical applications. In this work, asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) are developed by synergistically designing carbon nanotube composite electrodes with 3D porous structures. The resultant ASC devices exhibit an extended operating voltage of 1.8 V, much higher than that of symmetric supercapacitors (≤1.0 V). Significantly, the obtained ASC devices deliver ultrahigh volumetric energy density as high as 19.8 mWh cm-3 (corresponding to an areal energy density of 198 µWh cm-2), which is the highest value among reported ASC devices. In addition, the ASC devices not only possess outstanding cycling stability and long self-discharging time, but also exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility under any bending states, even over 5000 bending cycles. The demonstrated flexible ASC devices with high performance are promising to be used as power sources for next-generation portable and wearable electronics.
