Project description:Molecules with luminescence have been extensively investigated, but the luminescence of a stable molecule with a triplet ground state has not been observed. Synthesis of boron-containing radicals has attracted lots of interest because of their unique electronic structures and potential applications in organic semiconductors. Though some boron-based diradicals have been reported, neutral boron-containing diradicals with triplet ground states are rare. Herein two borocyclic diradicals with different substituents (3 and 4) have been isolated. Their electronic structures were investigated by EPR and UV spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry, in conjunction with DFT calculations. Both experiment and calculation suggest that 3 is an open shell singlet diradical while 4 is a triplet ground state diradical with a large singlet-triplet gap (0.25 kcal mol-1). Both diradicals show multi fluorescence peaks (3: 414, 431, and 470 nm; 4: 420, 433, and 495 nm). 3 displays multiple redox steps and is a potential material towards the design of high-density memory devices. 4 represents the first example of a neutral triplet boron-containing diradical with a strong ferromagnetic interaction, and also is the first stable triplet diradical emitter.

Project description:Coexistence of states is an indispensable feature in the observation of domain walls, interfaces, shock waves or fronts in macroscopic systems. The propagation of these nonlinear waves depends on the relative stability of the connected equilibria. In particular, one expects a stable equilibrium to invade an unstable one, such as occur in combustion, in the spread of permanent contagious diseases, or in the freezing of supercooled water. Here, we show that an unstable state generically can invade a locally stable one in the context of the pattern forming systems. The origin of this phenomenon is related to the lower energy unstable state invading the locally stable but higher energy state. Based on a one-dimensional model we reveal the necessary features to observe this phenomenon. This scenario is fulfilled in the case of a first order spatial instability. A photo-isomerization experiment of a dye-dopant nematic liquid crystal, allow us to observe the front propagation from an unstable state.

Project description:High spin ( S = 1) organic diradicals may offer enhanced properties with respect to several emerging technologies, but typically exhibit low singlet triplet energy gaps and possess limited thermal stability. We report triplet ground state diradical 2 with a large singlet-triplet energy gap, Δ EST ≥ 1.7 kcal mol-1, leading to nearly exclusive population of triplet ground state at room temperature, and good thermal stability with onset of decomposition at ∼160 °C under inert atmosphere. Magnetic properties of 2 and the previously prepared diradical 1 are characterized by SQUID magnetometry of polycrystalline powders, in polystyrene glass, and in other matrices. Polycrystalline diradical 2 forms a novel one-dimensional (1D) spin-1 ( S = 1) chain of organic radicals with intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling of J'/ k = -14 K, which is associated with the N···N and N···O intermolecular contacts. The intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling in 2 is by far strongest among all studied 1D S = 1 chains of organic radicals, which also makes 1D S = 1 chains of 2 most isotropic, and therefore an excellent system for studies of low-dimensional magnetism. In polystyrene glass and in frozen benzene or dibutyl phthalate solution, both 1 and 2 are monomeric. Diradical 2 is thermally robust and is evaporated under ultrahigh vacuum to form thin films of intact diradicals on silicon substrate, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on C-K NEXAFS spectra and AFM images of the ∼1.5 nm thick films, the diradical molecules form islands on the substrate with molecules stacked approximately along the crystallographic a-axis. The films are stable under ultrahigh vacuum for at least 60 h but show signs of decomposition when exposed to ambient conditions for 7 h.

Project description:The development of intelligent materials, in particular those showing the highly sensitive mechanoresponsive luminescence (MRL), is desirable but challenging. Here we report a design strategy for constructing high performance On-Off MRL materials by introducing nitrophenyl groups to molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. The on-off methodology employed is based on the control of the intersystem crossing (ISC) process. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the nitrophenyl group effectively opens the nonradiative ISC channel to impart the high sensitivity and contrast On-Off behavior. On the other hand, the twisted AIE luminogen core endows enhanced reversibility and reduces the pressure required for the luminescence switching. Thin films can be readily fabricated from the designed materials to allow versatile applications in optical information recording and haptic sensing. The proposed design strategy thus provides a big step to expand the scope of the unique On-Off MRL family.

Project description:A new set of diamide receptors containing anthracene and carbazole bridging subunits and either pyrrole or phenyl substituents were synthesized. The four systems produced in this way were shown to bind representative anions in DMSO-d(6) solution and in the solid state. A higher relative affinity for two test oxoanions, namely dihydrogen phosphate and benzoate, over chloride anion was seen in solution, with the anions in question being studied in the form of their respective tetrabutylammonium salts. However, the specifics of the anion recognition process were seen to depend on structure, with the pyrrole-containing systems displaying higher relative affinities than their corresponding phenyl-containing congeners, and the carbazole receptors proving more effective than the anthracene analogues. Such observations provide support for the notion that both the carbazole NH and the pyrrolic NH protons play an important role in stabilizing the receptor-bound anions in solution. Structural analyses of several anion complexes of the diamidopyrrole carbazole receptor reveal that this is not necessarily the case in the solid state; specifically, the pyrrole NH protons are seen to interact with the amide oxygen of another molecule. The net result is an extended a one-dimensional coordinaton polymer.

Project description:It is a great challenge to tune the porosity of porous materials. As most porous organic cages are soluble, solution processability can be a possible way to regulate the porosity of such materials. Herein, a triptycene-based cage (TC) is demonstrated to be stable in acid, base or boiling water. Meanwhile, its porosity can be tuned by adjusting the solution-state assembly processes. TC molecules crystallized slowly from solution exhibit nearly no porosity to nitrogen (off-state). While, after rapid precipitating from methanol/dichloromethane solution, the obtained TC (TC-rp) is in a porous state and exhibit a high BET surface area of 653 m2 g-1 (on-state).

Project description:Highly stable, nonvolatile, high-temperature memory based on resistance switching was realized using a polycrystalline platinum (Pt) nanogap. The operating temperature of the memory can be drastically increased by the presence of a sharp-edged Pt crystal facet in the nanogap. A short distance between the facet edges maintains the nanogap shape at high temperature, and the sharp shape of the nanogap densifies the electric field to maintain a stable current flow due to field migration. Even at 873?K, which is a significantly higher temperature than feasible for conventional semiconductor memory, the nonvolatility of the proposed memory allows stable ON and OFF currents, with fluctuations of less than or equal to 10%, to be maintained for longer than eight hours. An advantage of this nanogap scheme for high-temperature memory is its secure operation achieved through the assembly and disassembly of a Pt needle in a high electric field.

Project description:In this study, we detail the development of a concise and efficient three-component protocol for the regioselective synthesis of highly functionalized bis-indoles through a one-pot, two-step sequential process starting from enaminones 1, indoles 2, and acenaphthylene-1,2-dione 3 that is catalyzed by piperidine and p-methyl benzenesulfonic acid. This protocol has several advantages including simplicity of experimental operation, high efficiency of bond formation, ready availability and low cost of starting materials, environmentally benign conditions, and target molecular diversity.

Project description:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are common components of many materials, such as petroleum and various types of tars. They are generally present in mixtures, occurring both naturally and as byproducts of fuel processing operations. It is important to understand the thermodynamic properties of such mixtures in order to understand better and predict their behavior (i.e., fate and transport) in the environment and in industrial operations. To characterize better the thermodynamic behavior of PAH mixtures, the phase behavior of a binary (anthracene + phenanthrene) system was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and the Knudsen effusion technique. Mixtures of (anthracene + phenanthrene) exhibit non-ideal mixture behavior. They form a lower-melting, phenanthrene-rich phase with an initial melting temperature of 372 K (identical to the melting temperature of pure phenanthrene) and a vapor pressure of roughly lnP/Pa = -2.38. The phenanthrene-rich phase coexists with an anthracene-rich phase when the mole fraction of phenanthrene (xP) in the mixture is less than or equal to 0.80. Mixtures initially at xP = 0.90 consist entirely of the phenanthrene-rich phase and sublime at nearly constant vapor pressure and composition, consistent with azeotrope-like behavior. Quasi-azeotropy was also observed for very high-content anthracene mixtures (2.5 < xP < 5) indicating that anthracene may accommodate very low levels of phenanthrene in its crystal structure.

Project description:Protein concentration gradients organize cells and tissues and commonly form through diffusion away from a local source of protein. Interestingly, during the asymmetric division of the Caenorhabditis elegans zygote, the RNA-binding proteins MEX-5 and PIE-1 form opposing concentration gradients in the absence of a local source. In this study, we use near-total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) imaging and single-particle tracking to characterize the reaction/diffusion dynamics that maintain the MEX-5 and PIE-1 gradients. Our findings suggest that both proteins interconvert between fast-diffusing and slow-diffusing states on timescales that are much shorter (seconds) than the timescale of gradient formation (minutes). The kinetics of diffusion-state switching are strongly polarized along the anterior/posterior (A/P) axis by the PAR polarity system such that fast-diffusing MEX-5 and PIE-1 particles are approximately symmetrically distributed, whereas slow-diffusing particles are highly enriched in the anterior and posterior cytoplasm, respectively. Using mathematical modeling, we show that local differences in the kinetics of diffusion-state switching can rapidly generate stable concentration gradients over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales.
