Project description:Reported are single crystal SQUID and single crystal high-frequency/high-field EPR data of a trinuclear complex with a rare six-coordinate coordination sphere of a DyIII center coupled to two terminal six-coordinate NiII ions. The analysis of the single crystal spectroscopic parameters allows for an accurate description of the ground state wavefunction. The experimental analysis is supplemented by the analysis of the paramagnetic NMR spectra, allowing for a thorough description of the DyIII center. The experimental data are interpreted on the basis of an ab initio ligand field analysis, and the computed parameters are in good agreement with the experimental observations. This supports the quality of the theoretical approach based on a pseudo-spin Hamiltonian for the electronic ground state. Further support emerges from the ab initio ligand field theory based analysis of a structurally very similar system that, in contrast to the complex reported here, shows single molecule magnetic properties, and this is in agreement with the quantum-chemical prediction and analysis.

Project description:To date X-ray protein crystallography is the most successful technique available for the determination of high-resolution 3D structures of biological molecules and their complexes. In X-ray protein crystallography the structure of a protein is refined against the set of observed Bragg reflections from a protein crystal. The resolution of the refined protein structure is limited by the highest angle at which Bragg reflections can be observed. In addition, the Bragg reflections alone are typically insufficient (by a factor of two) to determine the structure ab initio, and so prior information is required. Crystals formed from an imperfect packing of the protein molecules may also exhibit continuous diffraction between and beyond these Bragg reflections. When this is due to random displacements of the molecules from each crystal lattice site, the continuous diffraction provides the necessary information to determine the protein structure without prior knowledge, to a resolution that is not limited by the angular extent of the observed Bragg reflections but instead by that of the diffraction as a whole. This article presents an iterative projection algorithm that simultaneously uses the continuous diffraction as well as the Bragg reflections for the determination of protein structures. The viability of this method is demonstrated on simulated crystal diffraction.

Project description:The performance of Koopmans-compliant hybrid functionals in reproducing the electronic structure of organic crystals is tested for a series of acene crystals. The calculated band gaps are found to be consistent with those achieved with the GW method at a fraction of the computational cost and in excellent accord with the experimental results at room temperature, when including the thermal renormalization. The energetics of excess holes and electrons reveals a struggle between polaronic localization and band-like delocalization. The consequences of these results on the transport properties of acene crystals are discussed.

Project description:The optical properties of Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite nanocrystals have attracted considerable attention as lead-free alternatives to lead halide perovskites. A promising strategy to create additional flexibility in the emission color is doping lanthanide ions into Cs2AgBiBr6. Incorporating Yb3+ in the lattice has been shown to give rise to near-infrared (NIR) emission, but the energy transfer mechanism remained unclear. Here, we report on the luminescence and sensitization mechanism of Yb3+ in Cs2AgBiBr6 nano- and microcrystals. We observe that the incorporation of Yb3+ in the host lattice does not strongly affect the broadband red emission of the Cs2AgBiBr6 host but does give rise to an additional and characteristic ∼1000 nm NIR line emission from Yb3+. Temperature-dependent and time-resolved photoluminescence studies of undoped and Yb-doped Cs2AgBiBr6 reveal that the energy transfer does not take place through the red emissive state of the Cs2AgBiBr6 host. Instead, there is a competition between relaxation to the red-emitting state and trapping of the photoexcited charge carriers on Yb3+. Trapping on Yb3+ subsequently results in a charge transfer state that relaxes to the 2F5/2 excited state of Yb3+, followed by NIR narrow line f-f emission to the 2F7/2 ground state.

Project description:Heavy atomic nuclei have an excess of neutrons over protons, which leads to the formation of a neutron skin whose thickness is sensitive to details of the nuclear force. This links atomic nuclei to properties of neutron stars, thereby relating objects that differ in size by orders of magnitude. The nucleus 208Pb is of particular interest because it exhibits a simple structure and is experimentally accessible. However, computing such a heavy nucleus has been out of reach for ab initio theory. By combining advances in quantum many-body methods, statistical tools and emulator technology, we make quantitative predictions for the properties of 208Pb starting from nuclear forces that are consistent with symmetries of low-energy quantum chromodynamics. We explore 109 different nuclear force parameterizations via history matching, confront them with data in select light nuclei and arrive at an importance-weighted ensemble of interactions. We accurately reproduce bulk properties of 208Pb and determine the neutron skin thickness, which is smaller and more precise than a recent extraction from parity-violating electron scattering but in agreement with other experimental probes. This work demonstrates how realistic two- and three-nucleon forces act in a heavy nucleus and allows us to make quantitative predictions across the nuclear landscape.

Project description:A remarkable recent advancement has been the successful synthesis of two-dimensional boron monolayers on metal substrates. However, although up to 16 possible bulk allotropes of boron have been reported, none of them possess van der Waals (vdW) layered structures. In this work, starting from the experimentally synthesized monolayer boron sheet (β12 borophene), we explored the possibility for forming vdW layered bulk boron. We found that two β12 borophene sheets cannot form a stable vdW bilayer structure, as covalent-like B-B bonds are formed between them because of the peculiar bonding. Interestingly, when the covalently bonded bilayer borophene sheets are stacked on top of each other, three-dimensional (3D) layered structures are constructed via vdW interlayer interactions, rather than covalent. The 3D vdW layered structures were found to be dynamically stable. The interlayer binding energy is about 20 meV/Å2, which is close to the weakly bound graphene layers in graphite (∼16 meV/Å2). Furthermore, the density functional theory predicted electronic band structure testifies that these vdW bulk boron crystals can behave as good conductors. The insights obtained from this work suggest an opportunity to discover new vdW layered structures of bulk boron, which is expected to be crucial to numerous applications ranging from microelectronic devices to energy storage devices.

Project description:A theoretical protocol combining density functional theory (DFT) and multireference (CAS) calculations is proposed for a Eu3+ complex. In the complex, electronic levels of the central Eu3+ ion are correctly calculated at the CASPT2 level of theory, and the effect of introducing different numbers of states in the configuration interaction matrices is highlighted as well as the shortcomings of DFT methods in the treatment of systems with high spin multiplicity and strong spin-orbit coupling effects. For the 5D0 state energy calculation, the inclusion of states with different multiplicity and the number of states considered for each multiplicity are crucial parameters, even if their relative weight is different. Indeed, the addition of triplet and singlets is important, while the number of states is relevant only for the quintets. The herein proposed protocol enables a rigorous, full ab initio treatment of Eu3+ complex, which can be easily extended to other Ln3+ ions.

Project description:We introduce a machine learning-based approach called ab initio generalized Langevin equation (AIGLE) to model the dynamics of slow collective variables (CVs) in materials and molecules. In this scheme, the parameters are learned from atomistic simulations based on ab initio quantum mechanical models. Force field, memory kernel, and noise generator are constructed in the context of the Mori-Zwanzig formalism, under the constraint of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Combined with deep potential molecular dynamics and electronic density functional theory, this approach opens the way to multiscale modeling in a variety of situations. Here, we demonstrate this capability with a study of two mesoscale processes in crystalline lead titanate, namely the field-driven dynamics of a planar ferroelectric domain wall, and the dynamics of an extensive lattice of coarse-grained electric dipoles. In the first case, AIGLE extends the reach of ab initio simulations to a regime of noise-driven motions not accessible to molecular dynamics. In the second case, AIGLE deals with an extensive set of CVs by adopting a local approximation for the memory kernel and retaining only short-range noise correlations. The scheme is computationally more efficient than molecular dynamics by several orders of magnitude and mimics the microscopic dynamics at low frequencies where it reproduces accurately the dominant far-infrared absorption frequency.

Project description:We present an approach for the calculation of spin density distributions for molecules that require very large active spaces for a qualitatively correct description of their electronic structure. Our approach is based on the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm to calculate the spin density matrix elements as a basic quantity for the spatially resolved spin density distribution. The spin density matrix elements are directly determined from the second-quantized elementary operators optimized by the DMRG algorithm. As an analytic convergence criterion for the spin density distribution, we employ our recently developed sampling-reconstruction scheme [J. Chem. Phys.2011, 134, 224101] to build an accurate complete-active-space configuration-interaction (CASCI) wave function from the optimized matrix product states. The spin density matrix elements can then also be determined as an expectation value employing the reconstructed wave function expansion. Furthermore, the explicit reconstruction of a CASCI-type wave function provides insight into chemically interesting features of the molecule under study such as the distribution of α and β electrons in terms of Slater determinants, CI coefficients, and natural orbitals. The methodology is applied to an iron nitrosyl complex which we have identified as a challenging system for standard approaches [J. Chem. Theory Comput.2011, 7, 2740].

Project description:Lanthanide-based luminescent nanothermometers play a crucial role in optical temperature determination. However, because of the strong thermal quenching of the luminescence, as well as the deterioration of their sensitivity and resolution with temperature elevation, they can operate in a relatively low-temperature range, usually from cryogenic to ≈800 K. In this work, we show how to overcome these limitations and monitor very high-temperature values, with high sensitivity (≈2.1% K-1) and good thermal resolution (≈1.4 K) at around 1000 K. As an optical probe of temperature, we chose upconverting Yb3+-Tm3+ codoped YVO4 nanoparticles. For ratiometric sensing in the low-temperature range, we used the relative intensities of the Tm3+ emissions associated with the 3F2,3 and 3H4 thermally coupled levels, that is, 3F2,3 → 3H6/3H4 → 3H6 (700/800 nm) band intensity ratio. In order to improve sensitivity and resolution in the high-temperature range, we used the 940/800 nm band intensity ratio of the nonthermally coupled levels of Yb3+ (2F5/2 → 2F7/2) and Tm3+ (3H4 → 3H6). These NIR bands are very intense, even at extreme temperature values, and their intensity ratio changes significantly, allowing accurate temperature sensing with high thermal and spatial resolutions. The results presented in this work may be particularly important for industrial applications, such as metallurgy, catalysis, high-temperature synthesis, materials processing and engineering, and so forth, which require rapid, contactless temperature monitoring at extreme conditions.
