Project description:Bioinspired complexes employing the ligands 6-tert-butylpyridazine-3-thione (SPn) and pyridine-2-thione (SPy) were synthesized and fully characterized to mimic the tungstoenzyme acetylene hydratase (AH). The complexes [W(CO)(C2 H2 )(CHCH-SPy)(SPy)] (4) and [W(CO)(C2 H2 )(CHCH-SPn)(SPn)] (5) were formed by intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the nitrogen donors of the ligand on the coordinated C2 H2 molecule. Labelling experiments using C2 D2 with the SPy system revealed the insertion reaction proceeding via a bis-acetylene intermediate. The starting complex [W(CO)(C2 H2 )(SPy)2 ] (6) for these studies was accessed by the new acetylene precursor mixture [W(CO)(C2 H2 )n (MeCN)3-n Br2 ] (n=1 and 2; 7). All complexes represent rare examples in the field of W-C2 H2 chemistry with 4 and 5 being the first of their kind. In the ongoing debate on the enzymatic mechanism, the findings support activation of acetylene by the tungsten center.

Project description:Reported herein is the structural, spectroscopic, redox, and reactivity properties of a series of iron complexes containing both a π-donating thiolate, and π-accepting N-heterocycles in the coordination sphere, in which we systematically vary the substituents on the N-heterocycle, the size of the N-heterocycle, and the linker between the imine nitrogen and tertiary amine nitrogen. In contrast to our primary amine/thiolate-ligated Fe(II) complex, [FeII(SMe2N4(tren))]+ (1), the Fe(II) complexes reported herein are intensely colored, allowing us to visually monitor reactivity. Ferrous complexes with R = H substituents in the 6-position of the pyridines, [FeII(SMe2N4(6-H-DPPN)]+ (6) and [FeII(SMe2N4(6-H-DPEN))(MeOH)]+ (8-MeOH) are shown to readily bind neutral ligands, and all of the Fe(II) complexes are shown to bind anionic ligands regardless of steric congestion. This reactivity is in contrast to 1 and is attributed to an increased metal ion Lewis acidity assessed via aniodic redox potentials, Ep,a, caused by the π-acid ligands. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS) for neutral ligand binding were obtained from T-dependent equilibrium constants. All but the most sterically congested complex, [FeII(SMe2N4(6-Me-DPPN)]+ (5), react with O2. In contrast to our Mn(II)-analogues, dioxygen intermediates are not observed. Rates of formation of the final mono oxo-bridged products were assessed via kinetics and shown to be inversely dependent on redox potentials, Ep,a, consistent with a mechanism involving electron transfer.

Project description:The new iron(II)-thiolate complexes [((iPr)BIP)Fe(II)(SPh)(Cl)] (1) and [((iPr)BIP)Fe(II)(SPh)(OTf)] (2) [BIP = bis(imino)pyridine] were prepared as models for cysteine dioxygenase (CDO), which converts Cys to Cys-SO(2)H at a (His)(3)Fe(II) center. Reaction of 1 and 2 with O(2) leads to Fe-oxygenation and S-oxygenation, respectively. For 1 + O(2), the spectroscopic and reactivity data, including (18)O isotope studies, are consistent with an assignment of an iron(IV)-oxo complex, [((iPr)BIP)Fe(IV)(O)(Cl)](+) (3), as the product of oxygenation. In contrast, 2 + O(2) results in direct S-oxygenation to give a sulfonato product, PhSO(3)(-). The positioning of the thiolate ligand in 1 versus 2 appears to play a critical role in determining the outcome of O(2) activation. The thiolate ligands in 1 and 2 are essential for O(2) reactivity and exhibit an important influence over the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox potential.

Project description:Inspired by the proposed inner-sphere mechanism of the tungstoenzyme acetylene hydratase, we have designed tungsten acetylene complexes and investigated their reactivity. Here, we report the first intermolecular nucleophilic attack on a tungsten-bound acetylene (C2H2) in bioinspired complexes employing 6-methylpyridine-2-thiolate ligands. By using PMe3 as a nucleophile, we isolated cationic carbyne and alkenyl complexes.

Project description:The first examples of stable metal complexes with coordinated ethylene and carbon dioxide ligands are reported. Reaction of tris(ethylene) complexes mer-M(C2H4)3(PNP) (M = Mo and W; PNP = 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) with CO2 yields the corresponding, mixed cis-M(C2H4)2(CO2)(PNP) derivatives. X-ray studies reveal six-coordinate structures exhibiting ?2-ethylene and ?2-C,O carbon dioxide coordination. Remarkably, the formation of the molybdenum CO2 adduct occurs also in the solid state at room temperature, under 4 bar of CO2, in a nearly quantitative manner.

Project description:Progress toward the development of functional models of the carboxylate-bridged diiron active site in soluble methane monooxygenase is described in which potential substrates are introduced as substituents on bound pyridine ligands. Pyridine ligands incorporating a thiol, sulfide, sulfoxide, or phosphine moiety were allowed to react with the preassembled diiron(II) complex [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(R))(2)(O(2)CAr(R))(2)(THF)(2)], where (-)O(2)CAr(R) is a sterically hindered 2,6-di(p-tolyl)- or 2,6-di(p-fluorophenyl)benzoate (R = Tol or 4-FPh). The resulting diiron(II) complexes were characterized crystallographically. Triply and doubly bridged compounds [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2-MeSpy)] (4) and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-MeS(O)py)(2)] (5) resulted when 2-methylthiopyridine (2-MeSpy) and 2-pyridylmethylsulfoxide (2-MeS(O)py), respectively, were employed. Another triply bridged diiron(II) complex, [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(3)-(O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(2-Ph(2)Ppy)] (3), was obtained containing 2-diphenylphosphinopyridine (2-Ph(2)Ppy). The use of 2-mercaptopyridine (2-HSpy) produced the mononuclear complex [Fe(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-HSpy)(2)] (6a). Together with that of previously reported [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2-PhSpy)] (2) and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2-Ph(2)Ppy)] (1), the dioxygen reactivity of these iron(II) complexes was investigated. A dioxygen-dependent intermediate (6b) formed upon exposure of 6a to O(2), the electronic structure of which was probed by various spectroscopic methods. Exposure of 4 and 5 to dioxygen revealed both sulfide and sulfoxide oxidation. Oxidation of 3 in CH(2)Cl(2) yields [Fe(2)(mu-OH)(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(O(2)CAr(4)(-FPh))(3)(OH(2))(2-Ph(2)P(O)py)] (8), which contains the biologically relevant {Fe(2)(mu-OH)(2)(mu-O(2)CR)}(3+) core. This reaction is sensitive to the choice of carboxylate ligands, however, since the p-tolyl analogue 1 yielded a hexanuclear species, 7, upon oxidation.

Project description:Four dimeric nickel(II) complexes [Ni2Cl2(BnC2S)2] [1], [Ni2Cl2(BnC3S)2] [2], [Ni2(PyC2S)2]Br2 [3]Br2, and [Ni2(PyC3S)2]Br2 [4]Br2 of four different thiolate-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were synthesized, and their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The four ligands differ by the alkyl chain length between the thiolate group and the benzimidazole nitrogen (two -C2- or three -C3- carbon atoms) and the second functionality at the NHC being a benzyl (Bn) or a pyridylmethyl (Py) group. The nickel(II) ions are coordinated to the NHC carbon atom and the pendent thiolate group, which bridges to the second nickel(II) ion creating the dinuclear structure. Additionally, in compounds [1] and [2], the fourth coordination position of the square-planar Ni(II) centers is occupied by the halide ions, whereas in [3]2+ and [4]2+, the additional pendant pyridylmethyl groups complete the coordination spheres of the nickel ions. The electrochemical properties of the four complexes were studied using cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry methods. The thiolate-functionalized carbene complexes [1] and [2] appear to be poor electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction; the complexes [3]Br2 and [4]Br2, bearing an extra pyridylmethyl group, show higher catalytic activity in proton reduction, indicating that the pyridine group plays an important role in the catalytic cycle.

Project description:Reaction of Ru3(CO)12 with two equiv of 6-bromopyridine alcohols 6-bromopyCHROH [(R = C6H5 (L1); R = 4-CH3C6H4 (L2); R = 4-OMeC6H4 (L3); R = 4-ClC6H4 (L4); (R = 4-CF3C6H4 (L5); R = 2-OMeC6H4 (L6); R = 2-CF3C6H4 (L7)] and 6-bromopyC(Me)2OH (L8) in refluxing xylene afforded novel trinuclear ruthenium complexes [6-bromopyCHRO]2Ru3(CO)8 (1a-1g) and [6-bromopyC(Me)2O]2Ru3(CO)8 (1h). These complexes were characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The structures of all the complexes were further confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. In the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the source of oxidant, complexes 1a-1h displayed high catalytic activities for oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols and most of oxidation reactions could be completed within 1 h at room temperature.

Project description:The reaction of a series of thiolate-ligated iron(II) complexes [Fe(II)([15]aneN(4))(SC(6)H(5))]BF(4) (1), [Fe(II)([15]aneN(4))(SC(6)H(4)-p-Cl)]BF(4) (2), and [Fe(II)([15]aneN(4))(SC(6)H(4)-p-NO(2))]BF(4) (3) with alkylhydroperoxides at low temperature (-78 °C or -40 °C) leads to the metastable alkylperoxo-iron(III) species [Fe(III)([15]aneN(4))(SC(6)H(5))(OOtBu)]BF(4) (1a), [Fe(III)([15]aneN(4))(SC(6)H(4)-p-Cl)(OOtBu)]BF(4) (2a), and [Fe(III)([15]aneN(4))(SC(6)H(4)-p-NO(2))(OOtBu)]BF(4) (3a), respectively. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies were conducted on the Fe(III)-OOR complexes and their iron(II) precursors. The edge energy for the iron(II) complexes (∼7118 eV) shifts to higher energy upon oxidation by ROOH, and the resulting edge energies for the Fe(III)-OOR species range from 7121-7125 eV and correlate with the nature of the thiolate donor. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis of the iron(II) complexes 1-3 in CH(2)Cl(2) show that their solid state structures remain intact in solution. The EXAFS data on 1a-3a confirm their proposed structures as mononuclear, 6-coordinate Fe(III)-OOR complexes with 4N and 1S donors completing the coordination sphere. The Fe-O bond distances obtained from EXAFS for 1a-3a are 1.82-1.85 Å, significantly longer than other low-spin Fe(III)-OOR complexes. The Fe-O distances correlate with the nature of the thiolate donor, in agreement with the previous trends observed for ν(Fe-O) from resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy, and supported by optimized geometries obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Reactivity and kinetic studies on 1a- 3a show an important influence of the thiolate donor.

Project description:A series of WIV alkyne complexes with the sulfur-rich ligand hydridotris(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl) borate) (TmMe ) are presented as bio-inspired models to elucidate the mechanism of the tungstoenzyme acetylene hydratase (AH). The mono- and/or bis-alkyne precursors were reacted with NaTmMe and the resulting complexes [W(CO)(C2 R2 )(TmMe )Br] (R=H 1, Me 2) oxidized to the target [WE(C2 R2 )(TmMe )Br] (E=O, R=H 4, Me 5; E=S, R=H 6, Me 7) using pyridine-N-oxide and methylthiirane. Halide abstraction with TlOTf in MeCN gave the cationic complexes [WE(C2 R2 )(MeCN)(TmMe )](OTf) (E=CO, R=H 10, Me 11; E=O, R=H 12, Me 13; E=S, R=H 14, Me 15). Without MeCN, dinuclear complexes [W2 O(μ-O)(C2 Me2 )2 (TmMe )2 ](OTf)2 (8) and [W2 (μ-S)2 (C2 Me2 )(TmMe )2 ](OTf)2 (9) could be isolated showing distinct differences between the oxido and sulfido system with the latter exhibiting only one molecule of C2 Me2 . This provides evidence that a fine balance of the softness at W is important for acetylene coordination. Upon dissolving complex 8 in acetonitrile complex 13 is reconstituted in contrast to 9. All complexes exhibit the desired stability toward water and the observed effective coordination of the scorpionate ligand avoids decomposition to disulfide, an often-occurring reaction in sulfur ligand chemistry. Hence, the data presented here point toward a mechanism with a direct coordination of acetylene in the active site and provide the basis for further model chemistry for acetylene hydratase.
