Chiral exciplex dyes showing circularly polarized luminescence: extension of the excimer chirality rule.

ABSTRACT: A series of axially chiral binaphthyls and quaternaphthyls possessing two kinds of aromatic fluorophores, such as pyrenyl, perylenyl, and 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl groups, arranged alternately were synthesized by a divergent method. In the excited state, the fluorophores selectively formed a unidirectionally twisted exciplex (excited heterodimer) by a cumulative steric effect and exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). They are the first examples of a monomolecular exciplex CPL dye. This versatile method for producing exciplex CPL dyes also improved fluorescence intensity, and the CPL properties were not very sensitive to the solvent or to the temperature owing to the conformationally rigid exciplex. This systematic study allowed us to confirm that the excimer chirality rule can be applied to the exciplex dyes: left- and right-handed exciplexes with a twist angle of less than 90° exhibit (-)- and (+)-CPL, respectively.

Tunable Excimer Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Isohexide Derivatives from Renewable Resources.

Project description:Organic compounds showing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are at the forefront of novel applications and technologies. Here we show the synthesis and chiroptical properties of pyrene and perylene derivatives of inexpensive chiral scaffolds: isomannide and isosorbide. Low-intensity ECD spectra were obtained, suggesting the absence of chromophore interaction in the ground state, except in the case of isomannide bis-perylenecarboxylate, whose ECD spectrum showed a positive exciton couplet. All isomannide derivatives, with the only exception of the one containing a pyrenecarboxylate and a perylenecarboxylate, exhibited excimer CPL spectra, whereas isosorbide derivatives did not show any CPL. Isomannide derivatives bearing two pyrenecarboxylate or two pyrenylacetate groups showed positive CPL emission with dissymmetry factors up to 10-2 , which depends on the conformational freedom of the appended units. The CPL sign, Stokes shift and order of magnitude of dissymmetry factor were reproduced by excited-state calculations on a representative compound. Interestingly, the mixed derivative containing pyrenic units with different spacing from the isomannide scaffold showed an oppositely signed excimer band with respect to the homo-substituted derivatives.

Two-Photon Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Chiral Eu Complexes.

Project description:We report the synthesis of chiral lanthanide complexes with extended π conjugation for efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) via two-photon excitation (2PE). The pyridine bis-oxazoline (PyBox) core provides the chiral Ln3+ environment, while the extension of the conjugated backbone through the pyridine 4-position with a phenylacetylene unit increases the two-photon absorption cross section. This work presents an important step toward the development of chiral systems displaying enhanced nonlinear optical properties, with potential applications in imaging and sensing, as well as in photodynamic therapy due to the selective excitation of molecules within a specific focal volume.

Chiral Organic Dyes Endowed with Circularly Polarized Laser Emission.

Project description:The direct generation of efficient, tunable, and switchable circularly polarized laser emission (CPLE) would have far-reaching implications in photonics and material sciences. In this paper, we describe the first chiral simple organic molecules (SOMs) capable of simultaneously sustaining significant chemical robustness, high fluorescence quantum yields, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) ellipticity levels (|glum|) comparable to those of similar CPL-SOMs. All these parameters altogether enable efficient laser emission and CPLE with ellipticity levels 2 orders of magnitude stronger than the intrinsic CPL ones.

Chirality and energy transfer amplified circularly polarized luminescence in composite nanohelix.

Project description:Transfer of both chirality and energy information plays an important role in biological systems. Here we show a chiral donor π-gelator and assembled it with an achiral π-acceptor to see how chirality and energy can be transferred in a composite donor-acceptor system. It is found that the individual chiral gelator can self-assemble into nanohelix. In the presence of the achiral acceptor, the self-assembly can also proceed and lead to the formation of the composite nanohelix. In the composite nanohelix, an energy transfer is realized. Interestingly, in the composite nanohelix, the achiral acceptor can both capture the supramolecular chirality and collect the circularly polarized energy from the chiral donor, showing both supramolecular chirality and energy transfer amplified circularly polarized luminescence (ETACPL).

Highly Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Chiral Metal-Imidazolate Frameworks.

Project description:To develop a simple and general method for improving the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances of materials is of great significance. In this work, two pairs of CPL-active homochiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) P/M-Et and P/M-Et(Cd) with eta topology are reported. In comparison to the reported isomorphic Zn-imidazolate MOFs P-Me and M-Me, both luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ) and photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL ) of P-Et and M-Et are largely improved by simply changing the methyl group to an ethyl group of ligands in P-Et and M-Et. Furthermore, the |glum | values are significantly amplified up to 0.015 from 0.0057 by introducing the non-luminescent halogenated aromatics, while an enhanced fluorescence efficiency is observed simultaneously (from 27.2% to 47.3%). The figure of merit value is about 40 times larger than that of P-Me and M-Me. Similarly, the CPL performances of P/M-Et(Cd) are improved by about five times after encapsulating fluorobenzene molecules. This work represents a new and simple method for developing CPL-active MOF materials.

Chiral Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Helicene Polymer With Efficient Red Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Project description:Chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-helicene polymers were synthesized to develop efficient red circularly polarized (CP) light emitters. These original chiral dyes display intense electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CP luminescence (CPL) in the far-red spectral region owing to the presence of excitonic coupling between achiral DPPs within the chiral environment of the polymeric structure. This work affords an interesting example illustrating the potential of π-conjugated helical polymers for chiral optoelectronic applications.

A chemosensor-based chiral coassembly with switchable circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Fluorescent chemosensors represent fast response to analytes with pronounced luminescent variations. They are promising as potential candidates in controlling luminescence and chiroptical activities of self-assembled chiral systems, which however have not been accomplished to date. We present a coassembled multiple component system that could respond to SO2 derivatives, giving rise to dynamic aggregation behaviors and switchable luminescence as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Cholesteryl-naphthalimide and coumarin derivatives coassemble into vesicles and nanohelices under the solvent strategy, behaving as energy transfer donor and accepter respectively. Energy transfer enables CPL transition from green to red depending on the molar fraction. After the addition of SO2 derivatives, hypochromic shifts occur to CPL due to the nucleophilic addition reaction to coumarin domain, hindering energy transfer and allow for the emergence of pristine luminescence. Here, we show a protocol to control over luminescence and chiroptical features of supramolecular chiral self-assemblies using fluorescent chemosensors.

Inter- and intramolecular excimer circularly polarised luminescence of planar chiral paracyclophane-pyrene luminophores.

Project description:Two types of planar chiral [2,2]paracyclophane-pyrene luminophores (1 and 2) with different binding positions of the fluorescent pyrene units were synthesised. (R)/(S)-1 with 1-pyrene units exhibited green intermolecular excimer circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) at 530 nm in the KBr-pellet, but exhibited no CPL signal in dilute CHCl3 solution. In contrast, (R)/(S)-2 with 2-pyrene units exhibited a blue intramolecular excimer CPL at 450 nm in CHCl3 solution. This is the first example of using the binding position of pyrene and the external environment to tune the type (inter- or intramolecular) and chiroptical sign of excimer CPL.

Bacterial Cellulose: A Versatile Chiral Host for Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Project description:Materials capable of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have attracted considerable attention for their promising potential applications. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was characterized as having a stable right-handed twist, which makes it a potential chiral host to endow luminophores with CPL. Then, the CPL-active BC composite film was constructed by simply impregnating bacterial cellulose pellicles with dilute aqueous solutions of luminophores (rhodamine B, carbon dots, polymer dots) and drying under ambient conditions. Simple encapsulation of luminophores renders BC with circularly polarized luminescence with a dissymmetry factor of up to 0.03. The multiple chiral centers of bacterial cellulose provide a primary asymmetric environment that can be further modulated by supramolecular chemistry, which is responsible for its circular polarization ability. We further demonstrate that commercial grade paper may endow luminophores with CPL activity, which reifies the universality of the method.

Project description:A series of chiral cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, [Pt((-)-L1)(Dmpi)]Cl ((-)-1), [Pt((+)-L1)(Dmpi)]Cl ((+)-1), [Pt((-)-L2)(Dmpi)]Cl ((-)-2), [Pt((+)-L2)(Dmpi)]Cl ((+)-2), [Pt3((-)-L2)2(Dmpi)4](ClO4)4 ((-)-3), and [Pt3((+)-L2)2(Dmpi)4](ClO4)4 ((+)-3) [(-)-L1 = (-)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (+)-L1 = (+)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine), (-)-L2 = (-)-1,3-bis(2-(4,5-pinene)pyridyl)benzene, (+)-L2 = (+)-1,3-bis(2-(4,5-pinene)pyridyl)benzene, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide], have been designed and synthesized. In aqueous solutions, (-)-1 and (+)-1 aggregate into one-dimensional helical chain structures through Pt···Pt, ?-?, and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. (-)-3 and (+)-3 represent a novel helical structure with Pt-Pt bonds. The formation of helical structures results in enhanced and distinct chiroptical properties as evidenced by circular dichroism spectra. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was observed from the aggregates of (-)-1 and (+)-1 in water, as well as (-)-3 and (+)-3 in dichloromethane. The CPL activity can be switched reversibly (for (-)-1 and (+)-1) or irreversibly (for (-)-3 and (+)-3) by varying the temperature.
