Project description:MotivationThe application of machine learning approaches in phylogenetics has been impeded by the vast model space associated with inference. Supervised machine learning approaches require data from across this space to train models. Because of this, previous approaches have typically been limited to inferring relationships among unrooted quartets of taxa, where there are only three possible topologies. Here, we explore the potential of generative adversarial networks (GANs) to address this limitation. GANs consist of a generator and a discriminator: at each step, the generator aims to create data that is similar to real data, while the discriminator attempts to distinguish generated and real data. By using an evolutionary model as the generator, we use GANs to make evolutionary inferences. Since a new model can be considered at each iteration, heuristic searches of complex model spaces are possible. Thus, GANs offer a potential solution to the challenges of applying machine learning in phylogenetics.ResultsWe developed phyloGAN, a GAN that infers phylogenetic relationships among species. phyloGAN takes as input a concatenated alignment, or a set of gene alignments, and infers a phylogenetic tree either considering or ignoring gene tree heterogeneity. We explored the performance of phyloGAN for up to 15 taxa in the concatenation case and 6 taxa when considering gene tree heterogeneity. Error rates are relatively low in these simple cases. However, run times are slow and performance metrics suggest issues during training. Future work should explore novel architectures that may result in more stable and efficient GANs for phylogenetics.Availability and implementationphyloGAN is available on github: https://github.com/meganlsmith/phyloGAN/.

Project description:PurposeTo improve reproducibility and predictive performance of PET radiomic features in multicentric studies by cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (GAN) harmonization approaches.MethodsGAN-harmonization was developed to harmonize whole-body PET scans to perform image style and texture translation between different centers and scanners. GAN-harmonization was evaluated by application to two retrospectively collected open datasets and different tasks. First, GAN-harmonization was performed on a dual-center lung cancer cohort (127 female, 138 male) where the reproducibility of radiomic features in healthy liver tissue was evaluated. Second, GAN-harmonization was applied to a head and neck cancer cohort (43 female, 154 male) acquired from three centers. Here, the clinical impact of GAN-harmonization was analyzed by predicting the development of distant metastases using a logistic regression model incorporating first-order statistics and texture features from baseline 18F-FDG PET before and after harmonization.ResultsImage quality remained high (structural similarity: left kidney ≥ 0.800, right kidney ≥ 0.806, liver ≥ 0.780, lung ≥ 0.838, spleen ≥ 0.793, whole-body ≥ 0.832) after image harmonization across all utilized datasets. Using GAN-harmonization, inter-site reproducibility of radiomic features in healthy liver tissue increased at least by ≥ 5 ± 14% (first-order), ≥ 16 ± 7% (GLCM), ≥ 19 ± 5% (GLRLM), ≥ 16 ± 8% (GLSZM), ≥ 17 ± 6% (GLDM), and ≥ 23 ± 14% (NGTDM). In the head and neck cancer cohort, the outcome prediction improved from AUC 0.68 (95% CI 0.66-0.71) to AUC 0.73 (0.71-0.75) by application of GAN-harmonization.ConclusionsGANs are capable of performing image harmonization and increase reproducibility and predictive performance of radiomic features derived from different centers and scanners.

Project description:Conventional paper currency and modern electronic currency are two important modes of transactions. In several parts of the world, conventional methodology has clear precedence over its electronic counterpart. However, the identification of forged currency paper notes is now becoming an increasingly crucial problem because of the new and improved tactics employed by counterfeiters. In this paper, a machine assisted system-dubbed DeepMoney-is proposed which has been developed to discriminate fake notes from genuine ones. For this purpose, state-of-the-art models of machine learning called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are employed. GANs use unsupervised learning to train a model that can then be used to perform supervised predictions. This flexibility provides the best of both worlds by allowing unlabelled data to be trained on whilst still making concrete predictions. This technique was applied to Pakistani banknotes. State-of-the-art image processing and feature recognition techniques were used to design the overall approach of a valid input. Augmented samples of images were used in the experiments which show that a high-precision machine can be developed to recognize genuine paper money. An accuracy of 80% has been achieved. The code is available as an open source to allow others to reproduce and build upon the efforts already made.

Project description:PurposeComplementary information obtained from multiple contrasts of tissue facilitates physicians assessing, diagnosing and planning treatment of a variety of diseases. However, acquiring multiple contrasts magnetic resonance images (MRI) for every patient using multiple pulse sequences is time-consuming and expensive, where, medical image synthesis has been demonstrated as an effective alternative. The purpose of this study is to develop a unified framework for multimodal MR image synthesis.MethodsA unified generative adversarial network consisting of only a single generator and a single discriminator was developed to learn the mappings among images of four different modalities. The generator took an image and its modality label as inputs and learned to synthesize the image in the target modality, while the discriminator was trained to distinguish between real and synthesized images and classify them to their corresponding modalities. The network was trained and tested using multimodal brain MRI consisting of four different contrasts which are T1-weighted (T1), T1-weighted and contrast-enhanced (T1c), T2-weighted (T2), and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (Flair). Quantitative assessments of our proposed method were made through computing normalized mean absolute error (NMAE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index measurement (SSIM), visual information fidelity (VIF), and naturalness image quality evaluator (NIQE).ResultsThe proposed model was trained and tested on a cohort of 274 glioma patients with well-aligned multi-types of MRI scans. After the model was trained, tests were conducted by using each of T1, T1c, T2, Flair as a single input modality to generate its respective rest modalities. Our proposed method shows high accuracy and robustness for image synthesis with arbitrary MRI modality that is available in the database as input. For example, with T1 as input modality, the NMAEs for the generated T1c, T2, Flair respectively are 0.034 ± 0.005, 0.041 ± 0.006, and 0.041 ± 0.006, the PSNRs respectively are 32.353 ± 2.525 dB, 30.016 ± 2.577 dB, and 29.091 ± 2.795 dB, the SSIMs are 0.974 ± 0.059, 0.969 ± 0.059, and 0.959 ± 0.059, the VIF are 0.750 ± 0.087, 0.706 ± 0.097, and 0.654 ± 0.062, and NIQE are 1.396 ± 0.401, 1.511 ± 0.460, and 1.259 ± 0.358, respectively.ConclusionsWe proposed a novel multimodal MR image synthesis method based on a unified generative adversarial network. The network takes an image and its modality label as inputs and synthesizes multimodal images in a single forward pass. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to accurately synthesize multimodal MR images from a single MR image.

Project description:Several aspects of past culture, including historical trends, are inferred from time-based patterns observed in archaeological artifacts belonging to different periods. The presence and variation of these objects provides important clues about the Neolithic revolution and given their relative abundance in most archaeological sites, ceramic potteries are significantly helpful in this purpose. Nonetheless, most available pottery is fragmented, leading to missing morphological information. Currently, the reassembly of fragmented objects from a collection of thousands of mixed fragments is a daunting and time-consuming task done almost exclusively by hand, which requires the physical manipulation of the fragments. To overcome the challenges of manual reconstruction and improve the quality of reconstructed samples, we present IberianGAN, a customized Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) tested on an extensive database with complete and fragmented references. We trained the model with 1072 samples corresponding to Iberian wheel-made pottery profiles belonging to archaeological sites located in the upper valley of the Guadalquivir River (Spain). Furthermore, we provide quantitative and qualitative assessments to measure the quality of the reconstructed samples, along with domain expert evaluation with archaeologists. The resulting framework is a possible way to facilitate pottery reconstruction from partial fragments of an original piece.

Project description:Predicting Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the most crucial tasks in analyzing a nation's economy and growth. The primary goal of this study is to forecast GDP using factors such as government spending, inflation, official development aid, remittance inflows, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Additionally, the paper aims to provide an alternative perspective to Generative Adversarial Networks method and demonstrate how such deep learning technique can enhance the accuracy of GDP predictions with small data and economy like The Gambia. We proposed the implementation of Generative Adversarial Networks to predict GDP using various economic factors over the period from 1970 to 2022. Performance metrics, including the coefficient of determination R2, mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and root- mean-square error (RMSE) were collected to evaluate the system's accuracy. Among the models tested-Random Forest Regression (RF), XGBoost (XGB), and Support Vector Regression (SVR)-the Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) model demonstrated superior performance, achieving the highest accuracy, which is 99% prediction accuracies. The most dependable model for capturing intricate correlations between GDP and its affecting components, however, RF and XGBoost, also achieved an accuracy of 98% each. This makes GAN the most desirable model for GDP prediction for our study. Through data analysis, this project aims to provide actionable insights to support strategies that sustain economic boom. This approach enables the generation of accurate GDP forecasts, offering a valuable tool for policymakers and stakeholders.

Project description:Synthetic images ar---e created using computer graphics modeling and artificial intelligence techniques, referred to as deepfakes. They modify human features by using generative models and deep learning algorithms, posing risks violations of social media regulations and spread false information. To address these concerns, the study proposed an improved generative adversarial network (GAN) model which improves accuracy while differentiating between real and fake images focusing on data augmentation and label smoothing strategies for GAN training. The study utilizes a dataset containing human faces and employs DCGAN (deep convolutional generative adversarial network) as the base model. In comparison with the traditional GANs, the proposed GAN outperform in terms of frequently used metrics i.e., Fréchet Inception Distance (FID) and accuracy. The model effectiveness is demonstrated through evaluation on the Flickr-Faces Nvidia dataset and Fakefaces d--ataset, achieving an FID score of 55.67, an accuracy of 98.82%, and an F1-score of 0.99 in detection. This study optimizes the model parameters to achieve optimal parameter settings. This study fine-tune the model parameters to reach optimal settings, thereby reducing risks in synthetic image generation. The article introduces an effective framework for both image manipulation and detection.

Project description:Healthcare fraud is considered a challenge for many societies. Health care funding that could be spent on medicine, care for the elderly or emergency room visits are instead lost to fraudulent activities by materialistic practitioners or patients. With rising healthcare costs, healthcare fraud is a major contributor to these increasing healthcare costs. This study evaluates previous anomaly detection machine learning models and proposes an unsupervised framework to identify anomalies using a Generative Adversarial Network (GANs) model. The GANs anomaly detection (GAN-AD) model was applied on two different healthcare provider data sets. The anomalous healthcare providers were further analysed through the application of classification models with the logistic regression and extreme gradient boosting models showing good performance. Results from the SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) also signifies that the predictors used explain the anomalous healthcare providers.

Project description:Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables the characterization of transcriptomic profiles at the single-cell resolution with increasingly high throughput. However, it suffers from many sources of technical noises, including insufficient mRNA molecules that lead to excess false zero values, termed dropouts. Computational approaches have been proposed to recover the biologically meaningful expression by borrowing information from similar cells in the observed dataset. However, these methods suffer from oversmoothing and removal of natural cell-to-cell stochasticity in gene expression. Here, we propose the generative adversarial networks (GANs) for scRNA-seq imputation (scIGANs), which uses generated cells rather than observed cells to avoid these limitations and balances the performance between major and rare cell populations. Evaluations based on a variety of simulated and real scRNA-seq datasets show that scIGANs is effective for dropout imputation and enhances various downstream analysis. ScIGANs is robust to small datasets that have very few genes with low expression and/or cell-to-cell variance. ScIGANs works equally well on datasets from different scRNA-seq protocols and is scalable to datasets with over 100 000 cells. We demonstrated in many ways with compelling evidence that scIGANs is not only an application of GANs in omics data but also represents a competing imputation method for the scRNA-seq data.

Project description:Currently, Internet of medical things-based technologies provide a foundation for remote data collection and medical assistance for various diseases. Along with developments in computer vision, the application of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in IOMT devices aids in the design of effective CAD systems for various diseases such as melanoma cancer even in the absence of experts. However, accurate segmentation of melanoma skin lesions from images by CAD systems is necessary to carry out an effective diagnosis. Nevertheless, the visual similarity between normal and melanoma lesions is very high, which leads to less accuracy of various traditional, parametric, and deep learning-based methods. Hence, as a solution to the challenge of accurate segmentation, we propose an advanced generative deep learning model called the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) for lesion segmentation. In the suggested technique, the generation of segmented images is conditional on dermoscopic images of skin lesions to generate accurate segmentation. We assessed the proposed model using three distinct datasets including DermQuest, DermIS, and ISCI2016, and attained optimal segmentation results of 99%, 97%, and 95% performance accuracy, respectively.
