Transitions in the cryptocurrency market during the COVID-19 pandemic: A network analysis.

ABSTRACT: In this letter, we identify the transitions of the cryptocurrency market during the pandemic by means of a network analysis. This method allows us to observe that COVID-19 significantly affected cryptocurrencies during a short period of financial panic, from 12 March 2020 to 1 April 2020, giving rise to a remarkable increase of market synchronisation. However, since April 2020, the cryptocurrency market progressively recovered its initial state, since the strong synchronisation, observed as a consequence of COVID-19, continuously disappeared. Therefore, our analysis highlights different market phases, which can be related to some of the phenomena reported in the existing literature.

This paper investigated the herding biases by quantifying the self-similarity intensity of cryptocurrency returns' during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main purpose of this work was to study the level of cryptocurrency efficiency through multifractal analysis before and after the coronavirus pandemic. The empirical results proved that COVID-19 has a positive impact on the cryptocurrency market efficiency.

The reversal in the cryptocurrency market before and during the Covid-19 pandemic: Does investor attention matter?

Project description:This study delves into the impact of reversals and investor attention on cryptocurrency returns before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. We employ the Two Stages Least Squares to analyze a sample of the top 20 cryptocurrencies from January 2016 to April 2021. Our results reveal that investor attention positively influences bitcoin returns in both periods, with a more pronounced effect during the pandemic. Conversely, reversals demonstrate a positive correlation with cryptocurrency returns before the outbreak but a negative relationship during the pandemic. Our robustness test further indicates that investor attention positively affects the returns of small and medium-cap cryptocurrencies, while reversals only exhibit positive consequences for small-cap cryptocurrencies. Additionally, our findings highlight stablecoins as a safe haven during the epidemic. The results suggest that investor attention has little influence on the returns of stablecoins, indicating that these coins are primarily resistant to market sentiment due to their inherent stability. The negative impact of the pandemic on the crypto market demonstrates a downward trend through each wave. Despite aligning with attention-induced price pressure and behavioral finance hypotheses, our results do not support efficient market theory or the notion of heterogeneity among investors. This research provides valuable insights for investors and policymakers in devising effective strategies for the cryptocurrency market.

COVID-19 government interventions and cryptocurrency market: Is there any optimum portfolio diversification?

Project description:This study attempts to find the impact of the COVID-19 government interventions on the cryptocurrency market. Using the daily data over the period 2020 M01 to 2022 M1, this study applied the Markov-Regime-switching and MGARCH-DCC approaches for eight cryptocurrencies. Overall, Markov-Regime-switching models reveal that there is an adverse effect of government interventions on cryptocurrencies. However, MGARCH-DCC models suggest that the best possible diversification opportunity exists between Dogecoin and Oil. For robustness, this study applies the MF-DFA and found a consistent result. The findings of this study would help investors and policymakers to formulate optimal investment decision-making.

The impact of COVID-19 on cryptocurrency markets: A network analysis based on mutual information.

Project description:The purpose of our study is to figure out the transitions of the cryptocurrency market due to the outbreak of COVID-19 through network analysis, and we studied the complexity of the market from different perspectives. To construct a cryptocurrency network, we first apply a mutual information method to the daily log return values of 102 digital currencies from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020, and also apply a correlation coefficient method for comparison. Based on these two methods, we construct networks by applying the minimum spanning tree and the planar maximally filtered graph. Furthermore, we study the statistical and topological properties of these networks. Numerical results demonstrate that the degree distribution follows the power-law and the graphs after the COVID-19 outbreak have noticeable differences in network measurements compared to before. Moreover, the results of graphs constructed by each method are different in topological and statistical properties and the network's behavior. In particular, during the post-COVID-19 period, it can be seen that Ethereum and Qtum are the most influential cryptocurrencies in both methods. Our results provide insight and expectations for investors in terms of sharing information about cryptocurrencies amid the uncertainty posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Market efficiency of cryptocurrency: evidence from the Bitcoin market.

Project description:This study examines whether the Bitcoin market satisfies the (weak-form) efficient market hypothesis using a quantum harmonic oscillator, which provides the state-specific probability density functions that capture the superimposed Gaussian and non-Gaussian states of the log return distribution. Contrasting the mixed evidence from a variance ratio test, the high probability allocated to the ground state suggests a near-efficient Bitcoin market. Findings imply that as Bitcoin evolves into an efficient market, speculators might encounter difficulty in exploiting profitable trading strategies. Furthermore, when policymakers initiate tight regulations to control the market, they should closely monitor market efficiency as an index of price distortion.

Evolutionary dynamics of the cryptocurrency market.

Project description:The cryptocurrency market surpassed the barrier of $100 billion market capitalization in June 2017, after months of steady growth. Despite its increasing relevance in the financial world, a comprehensive analysis of the whole system is still lacking, as most studies have focused exclusively on the behaviour of one (Bitcoin) or few cryptocurrencies. Here, we consider the history of the entire market and analyse the behaviour of 1469 cryptocurrencies introduced between April 2013 and May 2017. We reveal that, while new cryptocurrencies appear and disappear continuously and their market capitalization is increasing (super-)exponentially, several statistical properties of the market have been stable for years. These include the number of active cryptocurrencies, market share distribution and the turnover of cryptocurrencies. Adopting an ecological perspective, we show that the so-called neutral model of evolution is able to reproduce a number of key empirical observations, despite its simplicity and the assumption of no selective advantage of one cryptocurrency over another. Our results shed light on the properties of the cryptocurrency market and establish a first formal link between ecological modelling and the study of this growing system. We anticipate they will spark further research in this direction.

Pandemic Dreams: Network Analysis of Dream Content During the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Project description:We used crowdsourcing (CS) to examine how COVID-19 lockdown affects the content of dreams and nightmares. The CS took place on the sixth week of the lockdown. Over the course of 1 week, 4,275 respondents (mean age 43, SD = 14 years) assessed their sleep, and 811 reported their dream content. Overall, respondents slept substantially more (54.2%) but reported an average increase of awakenings (28.6%) and nightmares (26%) from the pre-pandemic situation. We transcribed the content of the dreams into word lists and performed unsupervised computational network and cluster analysis of word associations, which suggested 33 dream clusters including 20 bad dream clusters, of which 55% were pandemic-specific (e.g., Disease Management, Disregard of Distancing, Elderly in Trouble). The dream-association networks were more accentuated for those who reported an increase in perceived stress. This CS survey on dream-association networks and pandemic stress introduces novel, collectively shared COVID-19 bad dream contents.

Why Was There More Household Stock Market Participation During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Project description:Although the nation was experiencing an economic downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, we nonetheless observed an increase in household equity share value relative to both domestic market capitalization and retail investors' trading volume. In this paper, we aim to interpret the reasons underlying this seemingly unexpected phenomenon. We investigate portfolio choices with stocks, bonds, and life annuities under an inverse S-shaped probability distortion function. The results indicate that people invest more heavily in risky assets and buy more annuities when reducing their savings in risk-free accounts, which is indeed consistent with the reality.
