Project description:Electrospinning is a low-cost and straightforward method for producing various types of polymers in micro/nanofiber form. Among the various types of polymers, electrospun piezoelectric polymers have many potential applications. In this study, a new type of functional microfiber composed of poly(γ-benzyl-α,L-glutamate) (PBLG) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with significantly enhanced electromechanical properties has been reported. Recently reported electrospun PBLG fibers exhibit polarity along the axial direction, while electrospun PVDF fibers have the highest net dipole moment in the transverse direction. Hence, a combination of PBLG and PVDF as a core-shell structure has been investigated in the present work. On polarization under a high voltage, enhancement in the net dipole moment in each material and the intramolecular conformation was observed. The piezoelectric coefficient of the electrospun PBLG/PVDF core-shell fibers was measured to be up to 68 pC N-1 (d33), and the voltage generation under longitudinal extension was 400 mVpp (peak-to-peak) at a frequency of 60 Hz, which is better than that of the electrospun homopolymer fibers. Such new types of functional materials can be used in various applications, such as sensors, actuators, smart materials, implantable biosensors, biomedical engineering devices, and energy harvesting devices.

Project description:Rationale: Local hypoxia is a challenge for fabrication of cellular grafts and treatment of peripheral nerve injury. In our previous studies, we demonstrated that perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA) could provide short term oxygen supply to Schwann cells (SCs) and counteract the detrimental effects of hypoxia on SCs during the early stages of nerve injury. However, the quick release of oxygen in PFTBA compromised its ability to counteract hypoxia over an extended time, limiting its performance in peripheral nerve injury. Methods: In this study, PFTBA-based oxygen carrier systems were prepared through coaxial electrospinning to prolong the time course of oxygen release. Core-shell structures were fabricated, optimized, and the oxygen kinetics of PFTBA-enriched core-shell fibers evaluated. The effect of core-shells on the survival and function of SCs was examined in both 2D and 3D systems as well as in vivo. The system was used to bridge large sciatic nerve defects in rats. Results: PFTBA core-shell fibers provided high levels of oxygen to SCs in vitro, enhancing their survival, and increasing NGF, BDNF, and VEGF expression in 2D and 3D culture systems under hypoxic condition. In vivo analysis showed that the majority of GFP-expressing SCs in the PFTBA conduit remained viable 14 days post-implantation. We found that axons in PFTBA oxygen carrier scaffold improved axonal regeneration, remyelination, and recovery. Conclusion: A synthetic oxygen carrier in core-shell fibers was fabricated by the coaxial electrospinning technique and was capable of enhancing SC survival and nerve regeneration by prolonged oxygen supply. These findings provide a new strategy for fabricating cellular scaffolds to achieve regeneration in peripheral nerve injury treatment and other aerobic tissue injuries.

Project description:A modified coaxial electrospinning process was used to prepare composite nanofibrous mats from a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) solution with the addition of different cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the sheath fluid and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solution as the core fluid. This study investigated the conductivity of the as-spun solutions that increased significantly with increasing CNCs addition, which favors forming uniform fibers. This study discussed the effect of different CNCs addition on the morphology, thermal behavior, and the multilevel structure of the coaxial electrospun PMMA + CNCs/PAN composite nanofibers. A morphology analysis of the nanofibrous mats clearly demonstrated that the CNCs facilitated the production of the composite nanofibers with a core-shell structure. The diameter of the composite nanofibers decreased and the uniformity increased with increasing CNCs concentrations in the shell fluid. The composite nanofibrous mats had the maximum thermal decomposition temperature that was substantially higher than electrospun pure PMMA, PAN, as well as the core-shell PMMA/PAN nanocomposite. The BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) formula results showed that the specific surface area of the CNCs reinforced core-shell composite significantly increased with increasing CNCs content. The specific surface area of the composite with 20% CNCs loading rose to 9.62 m²/g from 3.76 m²/g for the control. A dense porous structure was formed on the surface of the electrospun core-shell fibers.

Project description:The conventional approach for preparation of core-sheath fibers is coaxial electrospinning. Single-spinneret electrospinning of emulsions is a much less common method to obtain core-sheath fibers. Core-sheath structure may be generated by electrospinning of homogeneous blend solutions; however, reports on such cases are still scarce. Herein, the preparation of nanofibrous composites from poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(L-lactide) (PLA) and beeswax (BW) by single-spinneret electrospinning of their homogeneous blend solutions in chloroform is reported. The produced fibers had core/double-sheath structure with a PEO core, PLA inner sheath and BW outer sheath. This original fiber structure was evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, selective extraction of BW or PEO, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PLA/BW double sheath led to hydrophobicity of the PEO/PLA/BW mats. The tensile tests revealed that PEO/PLA/BW mats had substantially improved mechanical behavior as compared to PEO, PLA and PEO/BW mats. PEO/PLA/BW mats can be used as drug carriers as evidenced by the one-pot incorporation of the model drug 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline (NQ) into the fibrous materials. Microbiological tests showed that PEO/PLA/BW/NQ had antimicrobial activity. Therefore, the new materials are promising for wound healing applications.

Project description:Core-sheath multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT)-cellulose fibers of diameters from several hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers were prepared by coaxial electrospinning from a nonvolatile, nonflammable ionic liquid (IL) solvent, 1-methyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][Ac]). MWNTs were dispersed in IL to form a gel solution. This gel core solution was electrospun surrounded by a sheath solution of cellulose dissolved in the same IL. Electrospun fibers were collected in a coagulation bath containing ethanol-water to remove the IL completely and dried to form core-sheath MWNT-cellulose fibers having a cable structure with a conductive core and insulating sheath. Enzymatic treatment of a portion of a mat of these fibers with cellulase selectively removed the cellulose sheath exposing the MWNT core for connection to an electrode. These MWNT-cellulose fiber mats demonstrated excellent conductivity because of a conductive pathway of bundled MWNTs. Fiber mat conductivity increased with increasing ratio of MWNT in the fibers with a maximum conductivity of 10.7 S/m obtained at 45 wt % MWNT loading.

Project description:Silicon (Si) is expected to be a high-energy anode for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large volume change along with the severe capacity degradation during the cycling process is still a barrier for its practical application. Herein, we successfully construct flexible silicon/carbon nanofibers with a core-shell structure via a facile coaxial electrospinning technique. The resultant Si@C nanofibers (Si@C NFs) are composed of a hard carbon shell and the Si-embedded amorphous carbon core framework demonstrates an initial reversible capacity of 1162.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 with a retained capacity of 762.0 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles. In addition, flexible LIBs assembled with Si@C NFs were hardly impacted under an extreme bending state, illustrating excellent electrochemical performance. The impressive performances are attributed to the high electric conductivity and structural stability of the porous carbon fibers with a hierarchical porous structure, indicating that the novel Si@C NFs fabricated using this electrospinning technique have great potential for advanced flexible energy storage.

Project description:A nanofabrication method for the production of flexible core-shell structured silk elastin nanofibers is presented, based on an all-aqueous coaxial electrospinning process. In this process, silk fibroin (SF) and silk-elastin-like protein polymer (SELP), both in aqueous solution, with high and low viscosity, respectively, were used as the inner (core) and outer (shell) layers of the nanofibers. The electrospinnable SF core solution served as a spinning aid for the nonelectrospinnable SELP shell solution. Uniform nanofibers with average diameter from 301 ± 108 nm to 408 ± 150 nm were obtained through adjusting the processing parameters. The core-shell structures of the nanofibers were confirmed by fluorescence and electron microscopy. In order to modulate the mechanical properties and provide stability in water, the as-spun SF-SELP nanofiber mats were treated with methanol vapor to induce β-sheet physical crosslinks. FTIR confirmed the conversion of the secondary structure from a random coil to β-sheets after the methanol treatment. Tensile tests of SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers showed good flexibility with elongation at break of 5.20% ± 0.57%, compared with SF nanofibers with an elongation at break of 1.38% ± 0.22%. The SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers should provide useful options to explore in the field of biomaterials due to the improved flexibility of the fibrous mats and the presence of a dynamic SELP layer on the outer surface.

Project description:Motion sensing, aimed at detecting and monitoring mechanical deformation, has received significant attention in various industrial and research fields. In particular, fiber-structured mechanical strain sensors with carbon-based materials have emerged as promising alternatives for wearable applications owing to their wearability and adaptability to the human body. Various materials, structures, sensing mechanisms, and fabrication methods have been used to fabricate high-performance fiber strain sensors. Nevertheless, developing multi-modal strain sensors that can monitor multiple deformations remains to be accomplished. This study established core/sheath fiber multi-modal strain sensors using polymer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Specifically, a flexible and conductive CNT sheet was wrapped onto the elastomeric core fiber at a certain angle. This wrapping angle allowed the CNTs to mechanically deform under tensile and torsional deformations without fatal structural damage. The CNTs could sense both tensile and torsional strains through reversible structural changes during deformations. The fiber strain sensor exhibited an increase of 124.9% and 9.6% in the resistance during tensile and torsional deformations of 100% and 1250 rad/m, respectively.

Project description:Cholesteryl ester liquid crystals exhibit thermochromic properties related to the existence of a twisted nematic phase. We formulate ternary mixtures of cholesteryl benzoate (CB), cholesteryl pelargonate (CP), and cholesteryl oleyl carbonate (COC) to achieve thermochromic behavior. We aim to achieve thermochromic fibers by incorporating the liquid crystal formulations into electrospun fibers. Two methods of incorporating the liquid crystal (LC) are compared: (1) blend electrospinning and (2) coaxial electrospinning using the same solvent system for the liquid crystal. For blend electrospinning, intermolecular interactions seem to be important in facilitating fiber formation since addition of LC can suppress bead formation. Coaxial electrospinning produces fibers with higher nominal fiber production rates (g/hr) and with higher nominal LC content in the fiber (wt. LC/wt. polymer assuming all of the solvent evaporates) but larger fiber size distributions as quantified by the coefficient of variation in fiber diameter than blend electrospinning with a single nozzle. Importantly, our proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate that coaxially electrospinning with LC and solvent in the core preserves the thermochromic properties of the LC so that thermochromic fibers are achieved.

Project description:Jussara pulp (Euterpe edulis Mart.) is rich in bioactive compounds known to be protective mediators against several diseases. In this context, nevertheless, anthocyanins, the most abundant natural pigment in jussara, are sensitive to temperature, pH, oxygen, and light conditions, leading to instability during food storage or digestion, and, thus jeopardizing the antioxidant proprieties retained by these flavonoids and limiting industrial application of the pulp. The production of nanostructures, from synthetic and natural polymers, containing natural matrices rich in bioactive compounds, has been widely studied, providing satisfactory results in the conservation and maintenance of the stability of these compounds. The current work aimed to compare uniaxial and coaxial electrospinning operation modes to produce core-shell jussara pulp nanofibers (NFs). Additionally, the parameters employed in the electrospinning processes were optimize using response surface methodology in an attempt to solve stability issues for the bioactive compounds. The best experimental conditions provided NFs with diameters ranging between 110.0 ± 47 and 121.1 ± 54 nm. Moreover, the coaxial setup improved jussara pulp NF formation, while further allowing greater integrity of NFs structures.
