The modified beta transmuted family of distributions with applications using the exponential distribution

ABSTRACT: In this work, a new family of distributions, which extends the Beta transmuted family, was obtained, called the Modified Beta Transmuted Family of distribution. This derived family has the Beta Family of Distribution and the Transmuted family of distribution as subfamilies. The Modified beta transmuted frechet, modified beta transmuted exponential, modified beta transmuted gompertz and modified beta transmuted lindley were obtained as special cases. The analytical expressions were studied for some statistical properties of the derived family of distribution which includes the moments, moments generating function and order statistics. The estimates of the parameters of the family were obtained using the maximum likelihood estimation method. Using the exponential distribution as a baseline for the family distribution, the resulting distribution (modified beta transmuted exponential distribution) was studied and its properties. The modified beta transmuted exponential distribution was applied to a real life time data to assess its flexibility in which the results shows a better fit when compared to some competitive models.

Exponential distribution of total depressive symptom scores in relation to exponential latent trait and item threshold distributions: a simulation study.

Project description:Total depressive symptom scores in the general population have been reported to follow an exponential distribution except at the lowest end of the range of scores. To verify the hypothesis that total depressive symptom scores follow the distribution of the latent trait, we performed a simulation study of depressive symptom scoring modeled after the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R). To simulate the scoring of ordinal scale items in CIS-R, two sets of random numbers were generated, one expressing the degree of the latent trait of depressive symptoms and another expressing the threshold for each item. Random latent trait numbers greater than those of item thresholds indicated the presence of specific symptoms.When exponential distribution was set to the latent trait's random numbers and each item's threshold had a certain degree of standard deviation, simulated total depressive symptom scores showed a linear pattern except at the lowest end of scores with a log-normal scale. Our results suggest that total depressive symptom scores follow the distribution of the latent trait of depressive symptoms due to the property of ordinal scales, which is characterized by individual differences in the threshold of each item.

A New Extended-X Family of Distributions: Properties and Applications.

Project description:During the past couple of years, statistical distributions have been widely used in applied areas such as reliability engineering, medical, and financial sciences. In this context, we come across a diverse range of statistical distributions for modeling heavy tailed data sets. Well-known distributions are log-normal, log-t, various versions of Pareto, log-logistic, Weibull, gamma, exponential, Rayleigh and its variants, and generalized beta of the second kind distributions, among others. In this paper, we try to supplement the distribution theory literature by incorporating a new model, called a new extended Weibull distribution. The proposed distribution is very flexible and exhibits desirable properties. Maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters are obtained, and a Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to assess the behavior of these estimators. Finally, we provide a comparative study of the newly proposed and some other existing methods via analyzing three real data sets from different disciplines such as reliability engineering, medical, and financial sciences. It has been observed that the proposed method outclasses well-known distributions on the basis of model selection criteria.

Long-tailed distributions of inter-event times as mixtures of exponential distributions.

Project description:Inter-event times of various human behaviour are apparently non-Poissonian and obey long-tailed distributions as opposed to exponential distributions, which correspond to Poisson processes. It has been suggested that human individuals may switch between different states, in each of which they are regarded to generate events obeying a Poisson process. If this is the case, inter-event times should approximately obey a mixture of exponential distributions with different parameter values. In the present study, we introduce the minimum description length principle to compare mixtures of exponential distributions with different numbers of components (i.e. constituent exponential distributions). Because these distributions violate the identifiability property, one is mathematically not allowed to apply the Akaike or Bayes information criteria to their maximum-likelihood estimator to carry out model selection. We overcome this theoretical barrier by applying a minimum description principle to joint likelihoods of the data and latent variables. We show that mixtures of exponential distributions with a few components are selected, as opposed to more complex mixtures in various datasets, and that the fitting accuracy is comparable to that of state-of-the-art algorithms to fit power-law distributions to data. Our results lend support to Poissonian explanations of apparently non-Poissonian human behaviour.

The Burr III-Topp-Leone-G family of distributions with applications.

Project description:In this article, we present a new family of generalized distributions called the Burr III-Topp-Leone-G (BIII-TL-G). We further study in detail its structural properties including moments, probability weighted moments, distribution of order statistics, and entropy. The maximum likelihood estimation method is used to estimate the model parameters. Simulations are carried out to show the consistency and efficiency of parameter estimates and finally, real data sets are used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model.

Empirical Modeling of Electron Transport in Fe/Ti Layered Double Hydroxide Using Exponential, Gaussian and Mixed Gauss-Exponential Distribution.

Project description:Fe/Ti-layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been hydrothermally prepared and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for evaluation of its structure, morphology, and optical properties. The purpose of doping Ti4+ with Fe3+ toward the synthesis of Fe/Ti LDH is to extend the absorption of the nanomaterial to longer wavelength, which is known to exhibit higher electron transport performance. To provide a practical realization, electron transport modeling across the band gap has been interpreted using exponential, Gaussian, and mixed Gauss-exponential distribution. The conduction band energy (E C) has been calculated by using the observed values of band gap (E g) and ξ-potential of the LDH. A detailed study has been undertaken to investigate the pattern of theoretical density of the LDH on the basis of unknown (E C = 0) and known (calculated) values of E C. Fermi-Dirac statistics has been used extensively for estimating the occupancy probability of electron (e-)-hole (h+) pair formation within the valence and conduction bands, respectively, with different temperatures, as well as for given energy levels. Monte Carlo simulations have also been performed to evaluate the suitability of the choice of the model, on the basis of the probability of availability of e-s within the conduction band. To provide a practical realization of the suggested models, electronic transition across the band gap of Fe/Ti LDH has been extensively investigated.

Exponentiated power generalized Weibull power series family of distributions: Properties, estimation and applications.

Project description:In this paper, we introduce the exponentiated power generalized Weibull power series (EPGWPS) family of distributions, obtained by compounding the exponentiated power generalized Weibull and power series distributions. By construction, the new family contains a myriad of new flexible lifetime distributions having strong physical interpretations (lifetime system, biological studies…). We discuss the characteristics and properties of the EPGWPS family, including its probability density and hazard rate functions, quantiles, moments, incomplete moments, skewness and kurtosis. The main vocation of the EPGWPS family remains to be applied in a statistical setting, and data analysis in particular. In this regard, we explore the estimation of the model parameters by the maximum likelihood method, with accuracy supported by a detailed simulation study. Then, we apply it to two practical data sets, showing the applicability and competitiveness of the EPGWPS models in comparison to some other well-reputed models.

Exponential size distribution of von Willebrand factor.

Project description:Von Willebrand Factor (VWF) is a multimeric protein crucial for hemostasis. Under shear flow, it acts as a mechanosensor responding with a size-dependent globule-stretch transition to increasing shear rates. Here, we quantify for the first time, to our knowledge, the size distribution of recombinant VWF and VWF-eGFP using a multilateral approach that involves quantitative gel analysis, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. We find an exponentially decaying size distribution of multimers for recombinant VWF as well as for VWF derived from blood samples in accordance with the notion of a step-growth polymerization process during VWF biosynthesis. The distribution is solely described by the extent of polymerization, which was found to be reduced in the case of the pathologically relevant mutant VWF-IIC. The VWF-specific protease ADAMTS13 systematically shifts the VWF size distribution toward smaller sizes. This dynamic evolution is monitored using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and compared to a computer simulation of a random cleavage process relating ADAMTS13 concentration to the degree of VWF breakdown. Quantitative assessment of VWF size distribution in terms of an exponential might prove to be useful both as a valuable biophysical characterization and as a possible disease indicator for clinical applications.

On the Burr XII-moment exponential distribution.

Project description:In this study, a new flexible lifetime model called Burr XII moment exponential (BXII-ME) distribution is introduced. We derive some of its mathematical properties including the ordinary moments, conditional moments, reliability measures and characterizations. We employ different estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood, maximum product spacings, least squares, weighted least squares, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling methods for estimating the model parameters. We perform simulation studies on the basis of the graphical results to see the performance of the above estimators of the BXII-ME distribution. We verify the potentiality of the BXII-ME model via monthly actual taxes revenue and fatigue life applications.

Type II exponentiated half-logistic Topp-Leone Marshall-Olkin-G family of distributions with applications.

Project description:The aim of this paper is to generalize and study a new family of lifetime distributions in order to gain flexibility. The new generalized distribution is named as type II exponentiated half-logistic Topp-Leone-Marshall-Olkin-G (TIIEHL-TL-MO-G) family of distributions. Several mathematical properties of the new model have been derived including, moments and generating function, distribution of the order statistics and Rényi entropy. The performance of the maximum likelihood estimates is evaluated via a simulation study. Lastly, we apply the generated family to three real data to illustrate the potentiality of this new generalized family of distributions.

Exponential sum-fitting of dwell-time distributions without specifying starting parameters.

Project description:Fitting dwell-time distributions with sums of exponentials is widely used to characterize histograms of open- and closed-interval durations recorded from single ion channels, as well as for other physical phenomena. However, it can be difficult to identify the contributing exponential components. Here we extend previous methods of exponential sum-fitting to present a maximum-likelihood approach that consistently detects all significant exponentials without the need for user-specified starting parameters. Instead of searching for exponentials, the fitting starts with a very large number of initial exponentials with logarithmically spaced time constants, so that none are missed. Maximum-likelihood fitting then determines the areas of all the initial exponentials keeping the time constants fixed. In an iterative manner, with refitting after each step, the analysis then removes exponentials with negligible area and combines closely spaced adjacent exponentials, until only those exponentials that make significant contributions to the dwell-time distribution remain. There is no limit on the number of significant exponentials and no starting parameters need be specified. We demonstrate fully automated detection for both experimental and simulated data, as well as for classical exponential-sum-fitting problems.
