Dataset for a full-year time series characterization of separately collected organic fraction of municipal solid waste from rural and urban regions in Germany

ABSTRACT: In the municipal context and depending on the collection scheme, different waste streams are of relevance. This article contains year-round data on the chemical composition of organic fractions of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) of rural and urban origins. All samples were collected in the municipality of Tübingen, which is located in southern Germany. The sampling procedure was executed in accordance with standard procedures mentioned in the German Biowaste Ordinance. The data presented in this article include (1) sampling area and process specifications (2) organoleptic examinations (3) dry matter and organic dry matter contents (4) impurity concentrations and (5) elemental compositions (major, minor and trace elements). All datasets are presented as a time series for the year 2018. Thus, this article especially presents the influence of season and settlement structure on the physico-chemical characteristics of OFMSW. Researchers, waste management companies and municipalities can compare and expand their own OFMSW data with those presented in this article. The dataset can also be used to calculate energy yields of OFMSW when utilized in anaerobic digestion. Based on the data, it is also possible to discuss and to evaluate the material utilization of OFMSW-based digestates and compost products, especially with regard to concentrations of major, minor and trace elements. Microbiota Dynamics of Mechanically Separated Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste during Composting.

Project description:Mechanical-biological treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) facilitates reducing the landfill workload. The current research aimed to study general activity parameters, content, functions, and diversity of fungal and prokaryotic microbiota in mechanically separated organic fraction of MSW (ms-OFMSW) composting, without using bulking agents and process-promoting additives. During 35 days of composting, vigorous emission of CO2 (max. 129.4 mg CO2 kg-1 h-1), NH3 (max. 0.245 mg NH3 kg-1 h-1), and heat release (max. 4.28 kJ kg-1 h-1) occurred, indicating intense microbial activity. Immediately following the preparation of the composting mixture, eight genera of lactic acid bacteria and fungal genera Rhizopus, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Agaricus, and Candida were predominant. When the temperature increased to more than 60 °C, the microbial biodiversity decreased. Due to succession, the main decomposers of ms-OFMSW changed. The Bacillaceae family, the genera Planifilum, Thermobifida, and Streptomyces, and the fungal genera Thermomyces and Microascus were involved in the processes of organic matter mineralization at the high-temperature and later stages. The biodiversity of the microbiota increased at the stages of cooling and maturation under conditions of relatively high nitrogen content. Thus, the microbial community and its succession during ms-OFMSW composting were characterized for the first time in this work.

Dataset of socio-economic and waste collection indicators for Portugal at municipal level.

Project description:This data article presents demographic, socio-economic and waste-related data at municipal level for Portugal. The dataset includes raw data collected from 4 main sources: (i) the annual reports of waste management companies; (ii) the database of the Portuguese water, sanitation and waste regulatory entity; (iii) the Portuguese Environmental Agency; and (iv) national statistical data. Relevant indicators for waste generation and for the separate collection of waste are proposed and calculated using the raw data. The dataset comprises municipalities with high, medium and low separate collection yields, providing socio-economic and waste infrastructures data that can be used for benchmarking. The dataset can also be used to define a baseline against which the progress of the collection of packaging waste can be assessed over time, or else serve as input to mathematical models predicting waste generation and collection. Moreover, data can serve as the base to calculate new waste-related indicators. In addition to being a valuable input to the waste topic, the dataset can also be used in a large range of other topics where demographic and socio-economic parameters are relevant. The data presented herein are associated with the research articles "Model for the separate collection of packaging waste in Portuguese low-performing recycling regions" [1] and "Artificial neural network modelling of the amount of separately-collected household packaging waste" [2].

Bioenergy production data from anaerobic digestion of thermally hydrolyzed organic fraction of municipal solid waste.

Project description:The presented dataset in this data article provides quantitative data on the production of bioenergy (biogas and biomethane) from mesophilic batch anaerobic digestion (AD) of thermally hydrolyzed organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). The discussion and interpretation of the data are provided in another publication entitled "Hydrothermal Pretreatment of Source Separated Organics for Enhanced Solubilization and Biomethane Recovery" (Razavi et al., 2019). The data and information presented in the current data article include (1) the ratio of soluble to particulate chemical oxygen demand (COD) under different thermal hydrolysis condition, (2) the daily measured biogas and biomethane data, (3) the cumulative methane yield data in terms of mL CH4 produced per gram of volatile suspended solids (VSS) as well as feedstock added, (4) the ultimate methane yield data as well as the relative improvement in methane recovery compared to the control (non-hydrolyzed) digester, (5) the data of first-order organics biodegradation rate constants, (6) the procedure of measuring biogas composition via gas chromatography, (7) the procedure of converting the biogas/methane volume data acquired under the actual experimental condition (mesophilic temperature of 38 °C and atmospheric pressure) to the standard temperature (0 °C) and pressure (1 atm) condition, and (8) the procedure of determining the first-order kinetic rate constants.

Simultaneous saccharification and lactic acid fermentation of the cellulosic fraction of municipal solid waste using Bacillus smithii.

Project description:ObjectiveA primary drawback to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) processes is the incompatibility of the temperature and pH optima for the hydrolysis and fermentation steps-with the former working best at 50-55 °C and pH 4.5-5.5. Here, nine thermophilic Bacillus and Parageobacillus spp. were evaluated for growth and lactic acid fermentation at high temperature and low pH. The most promising candidate was then carried forward to demonstrate SSF using the cellulosic fraction from municipal solid waste (MSW) as a feedstock.ResultsB. smithii SA8Eth was identified as the most promising candidate and in a batch SSF maintained at 55 °C and pH 5.0, using a cellulase dose of 5 FPU/g glucan, it produced 5.1 g/L lactic acid from 2% (w/v) MSW cellulosic pulp in TSB media.ConclusionThis work has both scientific and industrial relevance, as it evaluates a number of previously untrialled bacterial hosts for their compatibility with lignocellulosic SSF for lactic acid production and successfully identifies B. smithii as a potential candidate for such a process.

Volatile fatty acid production from mesophilic acidogenic fermentation of organic fraction of municipal solid waste and food waste under acidic and alkaline pH.

Project description:This study is focused on the effects of pH on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and their distribution through the acidogenic fermentation of source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from a mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) plant, and food waste (FW) from a university canteen. In semi-continuous lab-scale digesters using OFMSW at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3.5 days under acidic conditions (pH 6.0), the VFA concentration in the effluent increased to 9.8-11.5 g L-1 (VS content of the feedstock between 4.2 and 5.2% w/w), while its individual VFA profiling was similar to the influent which was already pre-fermented (namely, C2 35-41%, C3 18-22%, C4 17-21%, and C5 9-12%). When working with the same conditions but using FW as feedstock, an effluent with a VFA concentration up to 11.5 g VFA L-1 (FW with a VS content of 5.5% w/w) and a stable distribution of C2 and C4 acids (up to 60.3% and 12.9%, respectively) but with very low quantities of C3 and C5 acids (lower than 1.8 and 2.7%, respectively) was obtained. Anaerobic batch tests using FW revealed that alkaline pH near 9 could lead to higher VFA production with high acetic acid content when compared to pH 6. In the semi-continuous fermenters working at alkaline conditions (pH 9.5-10) using OFMSW and FW, an enhanced solubilization of organic matter was registered with respect to the fermenters working under acidic conditions. This fact was not reflected in a higher VFA production when using OFMSW as feedstock, probably due to free ammonia inhibition, since OFMSW was mixed in the MBT plant with supernatant from anaerobic digestion of this biowaste. However, when using FW, alkaline conditions lead to an enhanced VFA production with respect to the reactor working under acidic conditions, being acetic acid the predominant product, which represented up to 91% of the VFA spectrum obtained.

Rigid bioplastics shape the microbial communities involved in the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.

Project description:While bioplastics are gaining wide interest in replacing conventional plastics, it is necessary to understand whether the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) as an end-of-life option is compatible with their biodegradation and their possible role in shaping the microbial communities involved in the processes. In the present work, we assessed the microbiological impact of rigid polylactic acid (PLA) and starch-based bioplastics (SBB) spoons on the thermophilic anaerobic digestion and the aerobic composting of OFMSW under real plant conditions. In order to thoroughly evaluate the effect of PLA and SBB on the bacterial, archaeal, and fungal communities during the process, high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technology was carried out. The results suggest that bioplastics shape the communities' structure, especially in the aerobic phase. Distinctive bacterial and fungal sequences were found for SBB compared to the positive control, which showed a more limited diversity. Mucor racemosus was especially abundant in composts from bioplastics' treatment, whereas Penicillium roqueforti was found only in compost from PLA and Thermomyces lanuginosus in that from SBB. This work shed a light on the microbial communities involved in the OFMSW treatment with and without the presence of bioplastics, using a new approach to evaluate this end-of-life option.

Datasets on material properties and energy yields of lab-designed organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) components.

Project description:The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is a complex material with different ingredients characterized by varying properties depending on parameters such as season or geographical region of origin. Consequently, studies on OFMSW are hard to compare due to the changing characteristics of the samples. Therefore, this article presents data on the physico-chemical composition of standardized, recipe-based OFMSW components divided into the categories "Paper", "Green waste" and "Food waste", and further subcategories. Data presented in this article include (1) dry matter, (2) organic dry matter, (3) C, H and N concentrations, (4) gross calorific values, (5) ash melting behavior, (6) specific biogas yield and (7) methane concentration. An application example of an experiment requiring the same starting material properties is represented by storage experiments, as performed within the original scientific article [1]. Thus, this Data in Brief article also provides additional data on recipe-based storage experiments complementing the original article. The datasets cannot only be used to estimate biowaste potentials but they can also be used for the design and execution of experiments that require standardized OFMSW samples.

Dataset on the integrated downdraft gasifier and multi integrated gas cleaner system (IGCS) for municipal solid waste (MSW).

Project description:This experiment uses the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) from households and traditional markets as feed materials in the Integrated Downdraft Gasifier and Multi Integrated Gas Cleaner System (IGCS). The IGCS consist of cyclone, rectangular venturi scrubber, and rotary separator. The data from the experiment show the gasification characteristics such as temperature, Low Heating Value (LHV) and tar content. The parameter consists of Air Fuel ration (AFR) at 0.48, 0.5, 0.54 scrubbing water discharge at 1.26, 2.62, 3.33 l/min, and 0.9 rotary separator using suction speed at 0.9, 3.4, 4.4 m/s, respectively. The data also show the power output of the plant and energy balance of the system. This data can be used as reference for the further development of Integrated Downdraft Gasifier and Multi-Integrated Gas Cleaner systems.

Metaproteome of the waste water treatment plant Gerwisch/Germany

Project description:In this study the impact of protein fractionation techniques prior to LC/MS analysis was investigated on activated sludge samples derived at winter and summer condition from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). For reduction of the sample complexity, different fractionation techniques including RP-LC (1D-approach), SDS-PAGE and RP-LC (2D-approach) as well as RP-LC, SDS-PAGE and liquid IEF (3D-approach) were carried out before subsequent ITMS analysis. The derived spectra were identified by MASCOT search using a combination of the public UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot protein database and metagenome data from a WWTP (data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD001547). The results showed a significant increase of identified spectra, enabled by applying IEF and SDS-PAGE to the proteomic workflow. Based on meta-proteins, a core metaproteome and the corresponding taxonomic profile of the wastewater activated sludge was revealed and functional aspects using the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway library were analyzed. Hereby, the KEGG Orthology identifiers (KO numbers) of protein hits were plotted into pathway maps of the central carbon (map01200) and nitrogen metabolism (map00910). Using the 3D-approach, most proteins involved in glycolysis and citrate cycle and nearly all proteins of the nitrogen removal were identified, qualifying this approach as the most promising for future studies.

Municipal Solid Waste Landfills Harbor Distinct Microbiomes.

Project description:Landfills are the final repository for most of the discarded material from human society and its "built environments." Microorganisms subsequently degrade this discarded material in the landfill, releasing gases (largely CH4 and CO2) and a complex mixture of soluble chemical compounds in leachate. Characterization of "landfill microbiomes" and their comparison across several landfills should allow the identification of environmental or operational properties that influence the composition of these microbiomes and potentially their biodegradation capabilities. To this end, the composition of landfill microbiomes was characterized as part of an ongoing USGS national survey studying the chemical composition of leachates from 19 non-hazardous landfills across 16 states in the continental U.S. The landfills varied in parameters such as size, waste composition, management strategy, geography, and climate zone. The diversity and composition of bacterial and archaeal populations in leachate samples were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, and compared against a variety of physical and chemical parameters in an attempt to identify their impact on selection. Members of the Epsilonproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Clostridia, and candidate division OP3 were the most abundant. The distribution of the observed phylogenetic diversity could best be explained by a combination of variables and was correlated most strongly with the concentrations of chloride and barium, rate of evapotranspiration, age of waste, and the number of detected household chemicals. This study illustrates how leachate microbiomes are distinct from those of other natural or built environments, and sheds light on the major selective forces responsible for this microbial diversity.
