Electrical, electrochemical and structural studies of a chlorine-derived ionic liquid-based polymer gel electrolyte.

ABSTRACT: In the present article, an ionic liquid-based polymer gel electrolyte was synthesized by using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) as a host polymer. The electrolyte films were synthesized by using the solution casting technique. The as-prepared films were free-standing and transparent with good dimensional stability. Optimized electrolyte films exhibit a maximum room-temperature ionic conductivity of σ = 8.9 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1. The temperature dependence of the prepared polymer gel electrolytes follows the thermally activated behavior of the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation. The total ionic transference number was ≈0.91 with a wider electrochemical potential window of 4.0 V for the prepared electrolyte film which contains 30 wt % of the ionic liquid. The optimized films have good potential to be used as electrolyte materials for energy storage applications.

Project description:Polyionic liquid based gels have stimulated significant interest due to their wide applications in flexible electronics, such as wearable electronics, roll-up displays, smart mobile devices and implantable biosensors. Novel supported liquid gel electrolyte using polymerisable ionic liquid and an acrylate monomer, has been developed in this work by entrapping ionic liquid during polymerisation instead of post polymerisation impregnation. The chemically crosslinked polyionic liquid gel electrolyte (PIL) is prepared using 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) monomer and a polymerisable ionic liquid, 1,4-di(vinylimidazolium)butane bisbromide (DVIMBr) in an ionic liquid (IL- 1-butyl-3 methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) as the polymerisation solvent, which resulted in in-situ entrapment of the IL in the gel during polymerisation and crosslinking of the polymer. The supported liquid gel electrolyte (SLG) material was characterised with thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis, and was found to be stable with good mechanical properties. The electrochemical analysis showed that these chemically cross-linked PIL gel electrolyte-supported ILs are suitable for solid-state, flexible supercapacitor applications.

An Electrochemical Amperometric Ethylene Sensor with Solid Polymer Electrolyte Based on Ionic Liquid.

Project description:An electrochemical amperometric ethylene sensor with solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and semi-planar three electrode topology involving a working, pseudoreference, and counter electrode is presented. The polymer electrolyte is based on the ionic liquid 1-butyl 3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BMIM][NTf2] immobilized in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) matrix. An innovative aerosol-jet printing technique was used to deposit the gold working electrode (WE) on the solid polymer electrolyte layer to make a unique electrochemical active SPE/WE interface. The analyte, gaseous ethylene, was detected by oxidation at 800 mV vs. the platinum pseudoreference electrode. The sensor parameters such as sensitivity, response/recovery time, repeatability, hysteresis, and limits of detection and quantification were determined and their relation to the morphology and microstructure of the SPE/WE interface examined. The use of additive printing techniques for sensor preparation demonstrates the potential of polymer electrolytes with respect to the mass production of printed electrochemical gas sensors.

A Self-Healing Ionic Liquid-Based Ionically Cross-Linked Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Electrochromic Devices.

Project description:An ionic liquid-based ionically cross-linked gel polymer electrolyte (GPE-ILs) was successfully synthesized using acrylic acid, 2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, and ionic liquids. Electrochromic devices (ECDs) with an architecture of glass/FTO/WO3/GPE-ILs/FTO/glass were fabricated by a laminating technology. The devices showed performances of large optical modulation of 49.9% at 650 nm, short switching times with the coloration time (tc) of 7 s and the bleaching time (tb) of 4 s, high coloration efficiency of 96.2 cm2 C-1, and cycling stability of 200 cycles. The GPE-ILs exhibits high ionic conductivity, superior thermal stability and good self-healing ability. GPE-ILs demonstrates an ionic conductivity of 3.19 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C and the same ions migration behaviors with most widely used liquid electrolyte between -10 and 80 °C maintains more than 80% of its tensile strength after self-healing and received only 5% weight loss at 300 °C.

Ion rectification based on gel polymer electrolyte ionic diode.

Project description:Biological ion channels rely on ions as charge carriers and unidirectional ion flow to produce and transmit signals. To realize artificial biological inspired circuitry and seamless human-machine communication, ion-transport-based rectification devices should be developed. In this research, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are assembled to construct a novel ionic diode, enabling ion rectification through ion-diffusion/migration that emulates biological systems. This ion rectification results from the different diffusion/migration behaviors of mobile ions transporting in the GPE heterojunction. The electrical tests of the GPE heterojunction reveal outstanding rectifying ratio of 23.11. The GPE ionic diode operates in wide temperature window, from -20 °C (anti-freezing) to 125 °C (thermal tolerance). The absence of redox reactions is verified in the cyclic voltammogram. The GPE ionic diodes are used to construct ionic logic gates for signal communication. Furthermore, rectification of a triboelectric nanogenerator and potential for synaptic devices are demonstrated.

The potential of incorporation of binary salts and ionic liquid in P(VP-co-VAc) gel polymer electrolyte in electrochemical and photovoltaic performances.

Project description:In this study, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been assembled with poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate) (P(VP-co-VAc)) gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) which have been incorporated with binary salt and an ionic liquid. The potential of this combination was studied and reported. The binary salt system GPEs was having ionic conductivity and power conversion efficiency (PCE) that could reach up to 1.90 × 10(-3) S cm(-1) and 5.53%, respectively. Interestingly, upon the addition of the ionic liquid, MPII into the binary salt system the ionic conductivity and PCE had risen steadily up to 4.09 × 10(-3) S cm(-1) and 5.94%, respectively. In order to know more about this phenomenon, the electrochemical impedance studies (EIS) of the GPE samples have been done and reported. Fourier transform infrared studies (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) have also been studied to understand more on the structural and thermal properties of the GPEs. The Nyquist plot and Bodes plot studies have been done in order to understand the electrochemical properties of the GPE based DSSCs and Tafel polarization studies were done to determine the electrocatalytic activity of the GPE samples.

Functional Ionic Liquid Modified Core-Shell Structured Fibrous Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Safe and Efficient Fast Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Fast charging is of enormous concerns in the development of power batteries, while the low conductivity and lithium ion transference number in current electrolytes degraded the charge balance, limited the rate performance, and even cause safety issues for dendrite growth. Combine inorganic fillers and ionic liquid plasticizer, here in this paper we prepared a core-shell structured nanofibrous membrane, by incorporating with carbonate based electrolyte, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with high conductivity, outstanding Li+ transference number was obtained. Notably, the Li/electrolyte/LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) half-cell with this composite electrolyte delivers a reversible capacity of 65 mAh/g at 20C, which is 13 times higher than that of with Celgard 2325 membrane. It also shows enhanced long-term cycle stability at both 3C and 5C for the suppression of lithium dendrite. This organic-inorganic co-modified GPE guarantees the fast charging ability and safety of LIBs, thus provides a promising method in high performance electrolyte design.

Ionic Liquid Functionalized Gel Polymer Electrolytes for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:Metallic lithium (Li) is regarded as the ideal anode material in lithium-ion batteries due to its low electrochemical potential, highest theoretical energy density and low density. There are, however, still significant challenges to be addressed such as Li-dendrite growth and low interfacial stability, which impede the practical application of Li metal anodes. In order to circumvent these shortcomings, herein, we present a gel polymer electrolyte containing imidazolium ionic liquid end groups with a perfluorinated alkyl chain (F-IL) to achieve both high ionic conductivity and Li ion transference number by fundamentally altering the solubility of salt within the gel electrolyte through Lewis-acidic segments in the polymer backbone. Moreover, the presence of F-IL moieties decreased the binding affinity of Li cation towards the glycol chains, enabling a rapid transfer of Li cation within the gel network. These structural features enabled the immobilization of anions on the ionic liquid segments to alleviate the space-charge effect while promoting stronger anion coordination and weaker cation coordination in the Lewis-acidic polymers. Accordingly, we realized a high Li ion conductivity (9.16×10-3 S cm-1 ) and high Li ion transference number of 0.69 simultaneously, along with a good electrochemical stability up to 4.55 V, while effectively suppressing Li dendrite growth. Moreover, the gel polymer electrolyte exhibited stable cycling performance of the Li|Li symmetric cell of 9 mAh cm-2 for more than 1800 hours and retained 86.7 % of the original capacity after 250 cycles for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) full cell.

Closo-Borate Gel Polymer Electrolyte with Remarkable Electrochemical Stability and a Wide Operating Temperature Window.

Project description:A major challenge in the pursuit of higher-energy-density lithium batteries for carbon-neutral-mobility is electrolyte compatibility with a lithium metal electrode. This study demonstrates the robust and stable nature of a closo-borate based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), which enables outstanding electrochemical stability and capacity retention upon extensive cycling. The GPE developed herein has an ionic conductivity of 7.3 × 10-4 S cm-2 at room temperature and stability over a wide temperature range from -35 to 80 °C with a high lithium transference number ( tLi+$t_{{\rm{Li}}}^ + $ = 0.51). Multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared are used to understand the solvation environment and interaction between the GPE components. Density functional theory calculations are leveraged to gain additional insight into the coordination environment and support spectroscopic interpretations. The GPE is also established to be a suitable electrolyte for extended cycling with four different active electrode materials when paired with a lithium metal electrode. The GPE can also be incorporated into a flexible battery that is capable of being cut and still functional. The incorporation of a closo-borate into a gel polymer matrix represents a new direction for enhancing the electrochemical and physical properties of this class of materials.

Direct-Write Formation and Dissolution of Silver Nanofilaments in Ionic Liquid-Polymer Electrolyte Composites.

Project description:Materials with reconfigurable optical properties are candidates for applications such as optical cloaking and wearable sensors. One approach to fabricate these materials is to use external fields to form and dissolve nanoscale conductive channels in well-defined locations within a polymer. In this study, conductive atomic force microscopy is used to electrochemically form and dissolve nanoscale conductive filaments at spatially distinct points in a polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)-based electrolyte blended with varying amounts of ionic liquid (IL) and silver salt. The fastest filament formation and dissolution times are detected in a PEGDA/IL composite that has the largest modulus (several GPa) and the highest polymer crystal fraction. This is unexpected because filament formation and dissolution events are controlled by ion transport, which is typically faster within amorphous regions where polymer mobility is high. Filament kinetics in primarily amorphous and crystalline regions are measured, and two different mechanisms are observed. The formation time distributions show a power-law dependence in the crystalline regions, attributable to hopping-based ion transport, while amorphous regions show a normal distribution. The results indicate that the timescale of filament formation/dissolution is determined by local structure, and suggest that structure could be used to tune the optical properties of the film.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Stable SPES/SPANI Composite Polymer Electrolyte Membranes by Enriched Ionic Nanochannels.

Project description:Herein, we present the results of sulfonated polyaniline (SPANI) and sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) composite polymer electrolyte membranes. The membranes are established for high-temperature proton conductivity and methanol permeability to render their applicability. Composite membranes have been prepared by modifying the SPES matrix with different concentrations of SPANI (e.g., 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 wt %). Structural and thermomechanical characterizations have been performed using the transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analyzer techniques. Physicochemical and electrochemical properties have been evaluated by water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, dimensional stability, and proton conductivity. Methanol permeability experiment was carried out to analyze the compatibility of prepared membranes toward direct methanol fuel cell application and found the lowest methanol permeability for PAS-5. Also, the membranes reveal excellent thermal, mechanical, and physicochemical properties for their application toward high-temperature electromembrane processes.
