A partial least squares approach to digital finance adoption

ABSTRACT: In present times, the adoption and adaption of technology have become empirical. This paper helps in determining the factors of perceived risk and perceived benefits in order to understand the willingness or hesitance of people to adopt digital finance. An attempt is made to study the influence of perceived risk and benefit as the determinants of digital finance adoption. The data were collected from individuals of Northern India through a structured questionnaire. The study collected data from 411 respondents through a structured questionnaire. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling has been adopted to analyze the data through SmartPLSv2. For better understanding, perceived risk constituted three constructs-Security risk, financial risk and performance risk, and perceived benefit included seamless transaction, economic benefit and convenience. The research concluded that both perceived risk and benefits influence the adoption of digital finance. Perceived benefit has more impact on digital finance adoption than perceived risk. The findings of the paper are beneficial for digital finance service providers and marketers to enhance the awareness and advantages of digital finance according to the needs of consumers. The present study adds value to the existing literature on the relationship between perceived risk, perceived benefit and adoption of digital finance.

Poverty reduction in rural China: Does the digital finance matter?

Project description:As digital finance is widely spread and applied in China, this new format of financial technology could become a new way to reduce poverty in rural areas. By matching digital financial indexes of the prefectural-level cities with microdata on rural households from the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) in 2017, we find that digital finance significantly suppresses absolute poverty and relative poverty among rural households in China, which is supported by a series of robustness tests, such as the instrumental variable approach, using alternative specifications, and excluding extreme observations. Additionally, we provide evidence that the poverty reduction effect of digital finance is likely to be explained by alleviating credit constraints and information constraints, broadening social networks, and promoting entrepreneurship. Our findings further complement the research field on financial poverty reduction and offer insights for the development of public financial policies of poverty reduction in other countries, especially in some developing countries.

Big data in multi-block data analysis: An approach to parallelizing Partial Least Squares Mode B algorithm.

Project description:Partial Least Squares (PLS) Mode B is a multi-block method and a tightly coupled algorithm for estimating structural equation models (SEMs). Describing key aspects of parallel computing, we approach the parallelization of the PLS Mode B algorithm to operate on large distributed data. We show the scalability and performance of the algorithm at a very fine-grained level thanks to the versatility of pbdR, a R-project library for parallel computing. We vary several factors under different data distribution schemes in a supercomputing environment. Shorter elapsed times are obtained for the square-blocking factor 16×16 using a grid of processors as square as possible and non-square blocking factors 1000×4 and 10000×4 using an one-column grid of processors. Depending on the configuration, distributing data in a larger number of cores allows reaching speedups of up to 121 over the CPU implementation. Moreover, we show that SEMs can be estimated with big data sets using current state-of-the-art algorithms for multi-block data analysis.

Partial least squares path modeling using ordinal categorical indicators.

Project description:This article introduces a new consistent variance-based estimator called ordinal consistent partial least squares (OrdPLSc). OrdPLSc completes the family of variance-based estimators consisting of PLS, PLSc, and OrdPLS and permits to estimate structural equation models of composites and common factors if some or all indicators are measured on an ordinal categorical scale. A Monte Carlo simulation (N [Formula: see text]) with different population models shows that OrdPLSc provides almost unbiased estimates. If all constructs are modeled as common factors, OrdPLSc yields estimates close to those of its covariance-based counterpart, WLSMV, but is less efficient. If some constructs are modeled as composites, OrdPLSc is virtually without competition.

Sparse partial least squares classification for high dimensional data.

Project description:Partial least squares (PLS) is a well known dimension reduction method which has been recently adapted for high dimensional classification problems in genome biology. We develop sparse versions of the recently proposed two PLS-based classification methods using sparse partial least squares (SPLS). These sparse versions aim to achieve variable selection and dimension reduction simultaneously. We consider both binary and multicategory classification. We provide analytical and simulation-based insights about the variable selection properties of these approaches and benchmark them on well known publicly available datasets that involve tumor classification with high dimensional gene expression data. We show that incorporation of SPLS into a generalized linear model (GLM) framework provides higher sensitivity in variable selection for multicategory classification with unbalanced sample sizes between classes. As the sample size increases, the two-stage approach provides comparable sensitivity with better specificity in variable selection. In binary classification and multicategory classification with balanced sample sizes, the two-stage approach provides comparable variable selection and prediction accuracy as the GLM version and is computationally more efficient.

Recursive N-way partial least squares for brain-computer interface.

Project description:In the article tensor-input/tensor-output blockwise Recursive N-way Partial Least Squares (RNPLS) regression is considered. It combines the multi-way tensors decomposition with a consecutive calculation scheme and allows blockwise treatment of tensor data arrays with huge dimensions, as well as the adaptive modeling of time-dependent processes with tensor variables. In the article the numerical study of the algorithm is undertaken. The RNPLS algorithm demonstrates fast and stable convergence of regression coefficients. Applied to Brain Computer Interface system calibration, the algorithm provides an efficient adjustment of the decoding model. Combining the online adaptation with easy interpretation of results, the method can be effectively applied in a variety of multi-modal neural activity flow modeling tasks.

Partial least squares based gene expression analysis in renal failure.

Project description:BackgroundPreventive and therapeutic options for renal failure are still limited. Gene expression profile analysis is powerful in the identification of biological differences between end stage renal failure patients and healthy controls. Previous studies mainly used variance/regression analysis without considering various biological, environmental factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the gene expression difference between end stage renal failure patients and healthy controls with partial least squares (PLS) based analysis.MethodsWith gene expression data from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, we performed PLS analysis to identify differentially expressed genes. Enrichment and network analyses were also carried out to capture the molecular signatures of renal failure.ResultsWe acquired 573 differentially expressed genes. Pathway and Gene Ontology items enrichment analysis revealed over-representation of dysregulated genes in various biological processes. Network analysis identified seven hub genes with degrees higher than 10, including CAND1, CDK2, TP53, SMURF1, YWHAE, SRSF1, and RELA. Proteins encoded by CDK2, TP53, and RELA have been associated with the progression of renal failure in previous studies.ConclusionsOur findings shed light on expression character of renal failure patients with the hope to offer potential targets for future therapeutic studies.Virtual slidesThe virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/1450799302127207.

Application of copulas to improve covariance estimation for partial least squares.

Project description:Dimension reduction techniques, such as partial least squares, are useful for computing summary measures and examining relationships in complex settings. Partial least squares requires an estimate of the covariance matrix as a first step in the analysis, making this estimate critical to the results. In addition, the covariance matrix also forms the basis for other techniques in multivariate analysis, such as principal component analysis and independent component analysis. This paper has been motivated by an example from an imaging study in Alzheimer's disease where there is complete separation between Alzheimer's and control subjects for one of the imaging modalities. This separation occurs in one block of variables and does not occur with the second block of variables resulting in inaccurate estimates of the covariance. We propose the use of a copula to obtain estimates of the covariance in this setting, where one set of variables comes from a mixture distribution. Simulation studies show that the proposed estimator is an improvement over the standard estimators of covariance. We illustrate the methods from the motivating example from a study in the area of Alzheimer's disease.

Mining for genotype-phenotype relations in Saccharomyces using partial least squares.

Project description:BackgroundMultivariate approaches are important due to their versatility and applications in many fields as it provides decisive advantages over univariate analysis in many ways. Genome wide association studies are rapidly emerging, but approaches in hand pay less attention to multivariate relation between genotype and phenotype. We introduce a methodology based on a BLAST approach for extracting information from genomic sequences and Soft- Thresholding Partial Least Squares (ST-PLS) for mapping genotype-phenotype relations.ResultsApplying this methodology to an extensive data set for the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we found that the relationship between genotype-phenotype involves surprisingly few genes in the sense that an overwhelmingly large fraction of the phenotypic variation can be explained by variation in less than 1% of the full gene reference set containing 5791 genes. These phenotype influencing genes were evolving 20% faster than non-influential genes and were unevenly distributed over cellular functions, with strong enrichments in functions such as cellular respiration and transposition. These genes were also enriched with known paralogs, stop codon variations and copy number variations, suggesting that such molecular adjustments have had a disproportionate influence on Saccharomyces yeasts recent adaptation to environmental changes in its ecological niche.ConclusionsBLAST and PLS based multivariate approach derived results that adhere to the known yeast phylogeny and gene ontology and thus verify that the methodology extracts a set of fast evolving genes that capture the phylogeny of the yeast strains. The approach is worth pursuing, and future investigations should be made to improve the computations of genotype signals as well as variable selection procedure within the PLS framework.

Partial least squares based identification of Duchenne muscular dystrophy specific genes.

Project description:Large-scale parallel gene expression analysis has provided a greater ease for investigating the underlying mechanisms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Previous studies typically implemented variance/regression analysis, which would be fundamentally flawed when unaccounted sources of variability in the arrays existed. Here we aim to identify genes that contribute to the pathology of DMD using partial least squares (PLS) based analysis. We carried out PLS-based analysis with two datasets downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database to identify genes contributing to the pathology of DMD. Except for the genes related to inflammation, muscle regeneration and extracellular matrix (ECM) modeling, we found some genes with high fold change, which have not been identified by previous studies, such as SRPX, GPNMB, SAT1, and LYZ. In addition, downregulation of the fatty acid metabolism pathway was found, which may be related to the progressive muscle wasting process. Our results provide a better understanding for the downstream mechanisms of DMD.
