Fast Reduced Graphene-Based Membranes with High Desalination Performance.

ABSTRACT: Graphene-oxide (GO) membrane with notable ions sieving properties has attracted significant attention for many applications. However, because of the water swelling of GO membrane, the rejection of monovalent metal cations is generally low. In this work, we developed a fast and facile method to fabricate a kind of reduced GO membranes using the thermal treatment method at 160 °C for only one minute, which denoted as fast reduced GO membrane (FRGO). Surprising, the FRGO membrane represents high ion sieving ability and ultrahigh water/ions selectivity, compared with other reduced GO membranes with similar average interlayer spacings, and even superior to most of GO-based membranes reported in literature. Building on these findings, we provide a new light on fabricating of energy- and environment-related high desalination performance of GO-based membranes as well as a new insight into the transport mechanism within 2D laminar nanochannels.

Reduced Holey Graphene Oxide Membranes for Desalination with Improved Water Permeance.

Project description:Reduced-graphene oxide (r-GO) membranes with narrow channels exhibit salt rejections comparable to conventional nanofiltration (NF) membranes. However, their water permeances are much lower because of the high tortuosity for water permeation. Herein we report a facile solution-processable approach to create in-plane nanopores on GO nanosheets before reduction, dramatically decreasing the tortuosity and increasing water permeance while retaining the salt rejection. Specifically, holey GO (HGO) nanosheets were prepared via chemical etching using hydrogen peroxide, followed by the deposition on a porous support by vacuum filtration and then reduction via exposure to hydriodic acid solutions to generate the reduced HGO (r-HGO) membrane. The generation of nanopores increases the water permeance from 0.4 L m-2∙h-1∙bar-1 (LMH/bar) to 6.6 LMH/bar with Na2SO4 rejection greater than 98.5 %, and the membranes were robust under strong cross-flow shearing force for 36 h. Both water permeance and Na2SO4 rejection of these r-HGO membranes for the first time simultaneously reach the level of the commercial polyamide-based NF membranes. Given their good antibacterial properties and resistance to aggressive chemical washing, the r-HGO membranes show the promise as next-generation NF membranes for desalination.

Anti-fouling graphene-based membranes for effective water desalination.

Project description:The inability of membranes to handle a wide spectrum of pollutants is an important unsolved problem for water treatment. Here we demonstrate water desalination via a membrane distillation process using a graphene membrane where water permeation is enabled by nanochannels of multilayer, mismatched, partially overlapping graphene grains. Graphene films derived from renewable oil exhibit significantly superior retention of water vapour flux and salt rejection rates, and a superior antifouling capability under a mixture of saline water containing contaminants such as oils and surfactants, compared to commercial distillation membranes. Moreover, real-world applicability of our membrane is demonstrated by processing sea water from Sydney Harbour over 72 h with macroscale membrane size of 4 cm2, processing ~0.5 L per day. Numerical simulations show that the channels between the mismatched grains serve as an effective water permeation route. Our research will pave the way for large-scale graphene-based antifouling membranes for diverse water treatment applications.

Polyoxometalate Clusters Confined in Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes for Effective Ion Sieving and Desalination.

Project description:Efficient 2D membranes play a critical role in water purification and desalination. However, most 2D membranes, such as graphene oxide (GO) membranes, tend to swell or disintegrate in liquid, making precise ionic sieving a tough challenge. Herein, the fabrication of the polyoxometalate clusters (PW12) intercalated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) membrane (rGO-PW12) is reported through a polyoxometalate-assisted in situ photoreduction strategy. The intercalated PW12 result in the interlayer spacing in the sub-nanometer scale and induce a nanoconfinement effect to repel the ions in various salt solutions. The permeation rate of rGO-PW12 membranes are about two orders of magnitude lower than those through the GO membrane. The confinement of nanochannels also generate the excellent non-swelling stability of rGO-PW12 membranes in aqueous solutions up to 400 h. Moreover, when applied in forward osmosis, the rGO-PW12 membranes with a thickness of 90 nm not only exhibit a high-water permeance of up to 0.11790 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and high NaCl rejection (98.3%), but also reveal an ultrahigh water/salt selectivity of 4740. Such significantly improved ion-exclusion ability and high-water flux benefit from the multi-interactions and nanoconfinement effect between PW12 and rGO nanosheets, which afford a well-interlinked lamellar structure via hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions.

Enhanced desalination performance in compacted carbon-based reverse osmosis membranes.

Project description:Reverse osmosis membranes typically suffer compaction during the initial stabilization stage due to the applied hydraulic pressure, altering the desalination performance. The elucidation of the underlying transformations during compaction is key for further development of new membranes and its deployment in real-world scenarios. Hydraulic compaction of amorphous carbon (a-C) based membranes under cross-flow operation for water purification and desalination has been observed experimentally, and analysed employing molecular dynamics simulations. The previous outstanding separation performance for carbon membranes, especially for the nitrogen-containing (a-C:N) type, has been studied during compaction using lab-scale cross-flow desalination membrane systems. Our results indicate that the high-water pressure induces an overall reduction in the interstitial spaces within the a-C structure. Remarkably, the compacted a-C:N membrane exhibits improved performance in salt rejection and water permeability, compared to the a-C based membrane. Our analysis shows that performance improvement can be related to the higher mechanical stability of the carbon structure due to the presence of nitrogen sites, which also promote water diffusion and permeability. These results show that a-C:N based membranes are a feasible alternative to conventional polymeric membranes.

Graphene-Based Membranes for Water Desalination: A Literature Review and Content Analysis.

Project description:Graphene-based membranes have unique nanochannels and can offer advantageous properties for the water desalination process. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to heightening membrane performance and broadening their application, there is still lack of a systematic literature review on the development and future directions of graphene-based membranes for desalination. In this mini-review, literature published between 2011 and 2022 were analyzed by using the bibliometric method. We found that the major contributors to these publications and the highest citations were from China and the USA. Nearly 80% of author keywords in this analysis were used less than twice, showing the broad interest and great dispersion in this field. The recent advances, remaining gaps, and strategies for future research, were discussed. The development of new multifunctional nanocomposite materials, heat-driven/solar-driven seawater desalination, and large-scale industrial applications, will be important research directions in the future. This literature analysis summarized the recent development of the graphene-based membranes for desalination application, and will be useful for researchers in gaining new insights into this field.

Preparation of lignosulfonate-based nanofiltration membranes with improved water desalination performance.

Project description:Pulping and papermaking generate large amounts of waste in the form of lignosulfonates which have limited valorized applications so far. Herein, we report a novel lignosulfonate-based nanofiltration membrane, prepared by using polyethylenimine (PEI) and sodium lignosulfonate (SL) via a layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. As a low-cost and renewable natural polyelectrolyte, SL is selected to replace the synthetic polyelectrolyte commonly used in the conventional LbL fabrication for composite membranes. The prepared LbL (PEI/SL)7 membranes were crosslinked by glutaraldehyde (GA) to obtain (PEI/SL)7-GA membranes with compact selective layer. We characterized (PEI/SL)7 and (PEI/SL)7-GA membranes to study the chemical compositions, morphologies, and surface hydrophilicity. To improve the nanofiltration performances of the (PEI/SL)7-GA membranes for water desalination, we investigated the effects of the crosslinking time, GA concentration and the NaCl supporting electrolyte on membrane structure and performance. The optimized (PEI/SL)7-GA membrane exhibited a permeating flux up to 39.6 L/(m2·h) and a rejection of 91.7% for the MgSO4 aqueous solution 2.0 g/L concentration, showing its promising potential for water desalination. This study provides a new approach to applying the underdeveloped lignin-based biomass as green membrane materials for water treatment.

Nanoparticle-templated nanofiltration membranes for ultrahigh performance desalination.

Project description:Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with ultrahigh permeance and high rejection are highly beneficial for efficient desalination and wastewater treatment. Improving water permeance while maintaining the high rejection of state-of-the-art thin film composite (TFC) NF membranes remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a TFC NF membrane with a crumpled polyamide (PA) layer via interfacial polymerization on a single-walled carbon nanotubes/polyether sulfone composite support loaded with nanoparticles as a sacrificial templating material, using metal-organic framework nanoparticles (ZIF-8) as an example. The nanoparticles, which can be removed by water dissolution after interfacial polymerization, facilitate the formation of a rough PA active layer with crumpled nanostructure. The NF membrane obtained thereby exhibits high permeance up to 53.5 l m-2h-1 bar-1 with a rejection above 95% for Na2SO4, yielding an overall desalination performance superior to state-of-the-art NF membranes reported so far. Our work provides a simple avenue to fabricate advanced PA NF membranes with outstanding performance.

Lamellar Graphene Oxide-Based Composite Membranes for Efficient Separation of Heavy Metal Ions and Desalination of Water.

Project description:Sufficient efforts have been carried out to fabricate highly efficient graphene oxide (GO) lamellar membranes for heavy metal ion separation and desalination of water. However, selectivity for small ions remains a major problem. Herein, GO was modified by using onion extractive (OE) and a bioactive phenolic compound, i.e., quercetin. The as-prepared modified materials were fabricated into membranes and used for separation of heavy metal ions and water desalination. The GO/onion extract (GO/OE) composite membrane with a thickness of 350 nm shows an excellent rejection efficiency for several heavy metal ions such as Cr6+ (∼87.5%), As3+ (∼89.5%), Cd2+ (∼93.0%), and Pb2+ (∼99.5%) and a good water permeance of ∼460 ± 20 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. In addition, a GO/quercetin (GO/Q) composite membrane is also fabricated from quercetin for comparative studies. Quercetin is an active ingredient of onion extractives (2.1% w/w). The GO/Q composite membranes show good rejection up to ∼78.0, ∼80.5, ∼88.0, and 95.2% for Cr6+, As3+, Cd2+, and Pb2+, respectively, with a DI water permeance of ∼150 ± 10 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. Further, both membranes are used for water desalination by measuring rejection of small ions such as NaCl, Na2SO4, MgCl2, and MgSO4. The resulting membranes show >70% rejection for small ions. In addition, both membranes are used for filtration of Indus River water and the GO/Q membrane shows remarkably high separation efficiency and makes river water suitable for drinking purpose. Furthermore, the GO/QE composite membrane is highly stable up to ∼25 days under acidic, basic, and neutral environments as compared to GO/Q composite and pristine GO-based membranes.

Tunable membranes incorporating artificial water channels for high-performance brackish/low-salinity water reverse osmosis desalination.

Project description:Membrane-based technologies have a tremendous role in water purification and desalination. Inspired by biological proteins, artificial water channels (AWCs) have been proposed to overcome the permeability/selectivity trade-off of desalination processes. Promising strategies exploiting the AWC with angstrom-scale selectivity have revealed their impressive performances when embedded in bilayer membranes. Herein, we demonstrate that self-assembled imidazole-quartet (I-quartet) AWCs are macroscopically incorporated within industrially relevant reverse osmosis membranes. In particular, we explore the best combination between I-quartet AWC and m-phenylenediamine (MPD) monomer to achieve a seamless incorporation of AWC in a defect-free polyamide membrane. The performance of the membranes is evaluated by cross-flow filtration under real reverse osmosis conditions (15 to 20 bar of applied pressure) by filtration of brackish feed streams. The optimized bioinspired membranes achieve an unprecedented improvement, resulting in more than twice (up to 6.9 L⋅m-2⋅h-1⋅bar-1) water permeance of analogous commercial membranes, while maintaining excellent NaCl rejection (>99.5%). They show also excellent performance in the purification of low-salinity water under low-pressure conditions (6 bar of applied pressure) with fluxes up to 35 L⋅m-2⋅h-1 and 97.5 to 99.3% observed rejection.
