Earthquake source characterization by machine learning algorithms applied to acoustic signals.

ABSTRACT: Underwater seismic events generate acoustic radiation (such as acoustic-gravity waves), that carries information about the source and can travel long distances before dissipating. Effective early warning, emergency response, and information dissemination for earthquakes and tsunamis require a rapid characterisation of the fault properties: geometry and dynamics. In this work, we analysed hydrophone recordings of 201 earthquakes, located in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, by employing acoustic signal processing and classification methods. The analysis allows identifying the type of earthquake (i.e. slip type, magnitude) and provides near real-time estimation of the effective properties of the fault dynamics and geometry. The results were compared against values reported by the Harvard Global Centroid Moment Tensor catalog (gCMT), revealing statistical significance between the extracted acoustic properties used to feed machine learning algorithms and the predicted slip and magnitude values.

Project description:Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted increasing academic and industrial attention during the last decade. Using drones have broad benefits in diverse areas, such as civil and military applications, aerial photography and videography, mapping and surveying, agriculture, and disaster management. However, the recent development and innovation in the field of drone (UAV) technology have led to malicious usage of the technology, including the penetration of secure areas (such as airports) and serving terrorist attacks. Autonomous weapon systems might use drone swarms to perform more complex military tasks. Utilizing a large number of drones, simultaneously increases the risk and the reliability of the mission in terms of redundancy, survivability, scalability, and the quality of autonomous performance in a complex environment. This research suggests a new approach for drone swarm characterization and detection using RF signals analysis and various machine learning methods. While most of the existing drone detection and classification methods are typically related to a single drone classification, using supervised approaches, this research work proposes an unsupervised approach for drone swarm characterization. The proposed method utilizes the different radio frequency (RF) signatures of the drone's transmitters. Various kinds of frequency transform, such as the continuous, discrete, and wavelet scattering transform, have been applied to extract RF features from the radio frequency fingerprint, which have then been used as input for the unsupervised classifier. To reduce the input data dimension, we suggest using unsupervised approaches such as Principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis (ICA), uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP), and the t-distributed symmetric neighbor embedding (t-SNE) algorithms. The proposed clustering approach is based on common unsupervised methods, including K-means, mean shift, and X-means algorithms. The proposed approach has been evaluated using self-built and common drone swarm datasets. The results demonstrate a classification accuracy of about 95% under additive Gaussian white noise with different levels of SNR.

Project description:BACKGROUND:A current challenge in osteoporosis is identifying patients at risk of bone fracture. PURPOSE:To identify the machine learning classifiers that predict best osteoporotic bone fractures and, from the data, to highlight the imaging features and the anatomical regions that contribute most to prediction performance. STUDY TYPE:Prospective (cross-sectional) case-control study. POPULATION:Thirty-two women with prior fragility bone fractures, of mean age?=?61.6 and body mass index (BMI)?=?22.7?kg/m2 , and 60 women without fractures, of mean age?=?62.3 and BMI?=?21.4?kg/m2 . Field Strength/ Sequence: 3D FLASH at 3T. ASSESSMENT:Quantitative MRI outcomes by software algorithms. Mechanical and topological microstructural parameters of the trabecular bone were calculated for five femoral regions, and added to the vector of features together with bone mineral density measurement, fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) score, and personal characteristics such as age, weight, and height. We fitted 15 classifiers using 200 randomized cross-validation datasets. Statistical Tests: Data: Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality. Model Performance: sensitivity, specificity, precision, accuracy, F1-test, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Two-sided t-test, with P < 0.05 for statistical significance. RESULTS:The top three performing classifiers are RUS-boosted trees (in particular, performing best with head data, F1?=?0.64?±?0.03), the logistic regression and the linear discriminant (both best with trochanteric datasets, F1?=?0.65?±?0.03 and F1?=?0.67?±?0.03, respectively). A permutation of these classifiers comprised the best three performers for four out of five anatomical datasets. After averaging across all the anatomical datasets, the score for the best performer, the boosted trees, was F1?=?0.63?±?0.03 for All-features dataset, F1?=?0.52?±?0.05 for the no-MRI dataset, and F1?=?0.48?±?0.06 for the no-FRAX dataset. Data Conclusion: Of many classifiers, the RUS-boosted trees, the logistic regression, and the linear discriminant are best for predicting osteoporotic fracture. Both MRI and FRAX independently add value in identifying osteoporotic fractures. The femoral head, greater trochanter, and inter-trochanter anatomical regions within the proximal femur yielded better F1-scores for the best three classifiers. Project description:BackgroundStuttering is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder affecting speech fluency. The diagnosis and clinical management of stuttering is currently based on perceptual examination and clinical scales. Standardized techniques for acoustic analysis have prompted promising results for the objective assessment of dysfluency in people with stuttering (PWS).ObjectiveWe assessed objectively and automatically voice in stuttering, through artificial intelligence (i.e., the support vector machine - SVM classifier). We also investigated the age-related changes affecting voice in stutterers, and verified the relevance of specific speech tasks for the objective and automatic assessment of stuttering.MethodsFifty-three PWS (20 children, 33 younger adults) and 71 age-/gender-matched controls (31 children, 40 younger adults) were recruited. Clinical data were assessed through clinical scales. The voluntary and sustained emission of a vowel and two sentences were recorded through smartphones. Audio samples were analyzed using a dedicated machine-learning algorithm, the SVM to compare PWS and controls, both children and younger adults. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were calculated for a description of the accuracy, for all comparisons. The likelihood ratio (LR), was calculated for each PWS during all speech tasks, for clinical-instrumental correlations, by using an artificial neural network (ANN).ResultsAcoustic analysis based on machine-learning algorithm objectively and automatically discriminated between the overall cohort of PWS and controls with high accuracy (88%). Also, physiologic ageing crucially influenced stuttering as demonstrated by the high accuracy (92%) of machine-learning analysis when classifying children and younger adults PWS. The diagnostic accuracies achieved by machine-learning analysis were comparable for each speech task. The significant clinical-instrumental correlations between LRs and clinical scales supported the biological plausibility of our findings.ConclusionAcoustic analysis based on artificial intelligence (SVM) represents a reliable tool for the objective and automatic recognition of stuttering and its relationship with physiologic ageing. The accuracy of the automatic classification is high and independent of the speech task. Machine-learning analysis would help clinicians in the objective diagnosis and clinical management of stuttering. The digital collection of audio samples here achieved through smartphones would promote the future application of the technique in a telemedicine context (home environment).
