Association between the dispositional optimism and depression in young people: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of publications that reported the association between dispositional optimism and depression during youth, analyzing if the strength of this relationship varied according to potential factors. Systematic searches were carried out in APA PsycNet, Virtual Health Library, Embase, Web of Science, PubMed Central, and Scopus to collect English, Portuguese, or Spanish studies from 2009 onwards. Two reviewers selected the eligible articles, assessed the quality of each study, and extracted the data. For the synthesis of the results, a meta-analytic approach was used. We identified 4077 publications in the initial searches and 22 in the supplementary searches, from which 31 studies remained for analysis once the eligibility criteria were applied. The results showed a statistically significant negative association between dispositional optimism and depression in the young population, age being a factor that modifies the effect measure between these variables. This meta-analysis provides a consistent and robust synthesis on the interaction effect between dispositional optimism and depression in the young population. Based on these findings, early clinical admissions may effectively improve optimistic tendencies in young people, which could help them prevent depressive symptoms or episodes.

Project description:AimEvidence on the association between tobacco outlet density and proximity and smoking behavior among youth is inconsistent, which may be due to methodological problems in some studies. We assessed the association of outlet density or proximity with smoking behavior among young people while taking into account the methodological quality of studies.MethodsMEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were systematically searched for studies on the relationship between outlet density or proximity and smoking behavior among 12- to 25-year-olds, published between 1997 and 2017. Methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated independently by two reviewers.ResultsTwenty studies were included in the review. The quality assessment identified five primary sources of potential bias: overadjustment for mediators (problems identified in 14 studies), underadjustment for confounders (six studies), poor statistical model fit (four studies), selection bias (three studies), and misclassification of exposure measurements (eight studies). Four studies were of high methodological quality. In studies with relatively high quality, 10 associations were reported, of which seven were nonsignificant, two positive, and one negative. Similarly, the complete body of evidence demonstrated mostly nonsignificant associations, but a larger proportion of positive associations than negative.ConclusionAlthough there is some support for a positive direction, current literature does not provide consistent evidence for a positive association between outlet density and smoking among youth. This is not necessarily due to bias in specific studies, but more to fundamental challenges in study design and exposure measurements. These issues need to be addressed in future studies using more rigorous methods.ImplicationsOur findings suggest that, although there is some evidence for a positive association, current scientific literature does not provide consistent support to claim an effect of tobacco outlet density or proximity on youth smoking. This underlines the need for more research with improved methodology. There is a need for quasiexperimental studies, in which the outlet density changes substantially, studies measuring the actual exposure of youth to tobacco outlets, and qualitative research on the mechanisms underlying any association.

Project description:Higher consumption of fruit and vegetables has been associated with a lower risk of various chronic diseases including coronary heart disease, obesity, and certain cancers. Recently, fruit and vegetable intake has also been linked with mental health, including depression; however, this area is largely unexplored studies in young people and adults. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the association between fruit and vegetable intake and depressive symptoms in young people and adults aged 15-45. The review used a predefined protocol registered with International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (ID no: CRD42018091642). The systematic review focused on peer-reviewed cohort studies published from 1 January 2000 to 31 August 2020 using searches of six electronic databases. The exposure was fruit and vegetable consumption analysed both separately and/or together, and the outcome was depression or depressive symptoms. Data from eligible studies were extracted according to predefined criteria and the studies were appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for cohort studies to evaluate for study quality and risk of bias. A total of 12 studies from seven countries were deemed eligible and included in the qualitative synthesis, one study was categorised as "very good" quality, nine studies were "good" quality, and two studies were "moderate" quality by the quality assessment based on the total score for the NOS. The majority of cohort studies support the evidence that fruit consumption is associated with decreased risk of developing depression. However, the inconsistent results were observed when the effects of vegetable consumption were analysed independently, and the effects of fruit and vegetables combined were analysed. Despite this, the evidence seems to be building that a possible association exists, and this may have implications for addressing the burden of mental illness in young people and adults aged 15-45 years. More well-designed prospective cohort studies are needed to provide more robust evidence on the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and depression.

Project description:BackgroundMental health difficulties in children and adolescents are highly prevalent; however, only a minority receive adequate mental health care. Internet-delivered interventions offer a promising opportunity to increase access to mental health treatment. Research has demonstrated their effectiveness as a treatment for depression and anxiety in adults. This work provides an up-to-date examination of the available intervention options and their effectiveness for children and young people (CYP).ObjectiveIn this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to determine the evidence available for the effectiveness of internet-delivered interventions for treating anxiety and depression in CYP.MethodsSystematic literature searches were conducted throughout November 2020 using PubMed, PsycINFO, and EBSCO academic search complete electronic databases to find outcome trials of internet-delivered interventions treating symptoms of anxiety and/or depression in CYP by being either directly delivered to the CYP or delivered via their parents. Studies were eligible for meta-analysis if they were randomized controlled trials. Risk of bias and publication biases were evaluated, and Hedges g between group effect sizes evaluating intervention effects after treatment were calculated. Meta-analyses used random-effects models as per protocol.ResultsA total of 23 studies met the eligibility criteria for the systematic review, of which 16 were included in the meta-analyses, including 977 participants in internet-delivered treatment conditions and 1008 participants in control conditions across 21 comparisons. Random-effects models detected a significant small effect for anxiety symptoms (across 20 comparisons; Hedges g=-0.25, 95% CI -0.38 to -0.12; P<.001) and a small but not significant effect for depression (across 13 comparisons; Hedges g=-0.27, 95% CI -0.55 to 0.01; P=.06) in favor of internet-delivered interventions compared with control groups. Regarding secondary outcomes, there was a small effect of treatment across 9 comparisons for impaired functioning (Hedges g=0.52, 95% CI 0.24-0.80; P<.001), and 5 comparisons of quality of life showed no effect (Hedges g=-0.01, 95% CI -0.23 to 0.21; P=.94).ConclusionsThe results show that the potential of internet-delivered interventions for young people with symptoms of anxiety or depression has not been tapped into to date. This review highlights an opportunity for the development of population-specific interventions and their research to expand our current knowledge and build an empirical base for digital interventions for CYP.Trial registrationPROSPERO CRD42020220171; https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=220171.
