The complete mitochondrial genome of Lamprologus signatus (Perciformes: Cichlidae).

ABSTRACT: In this study, the complete 16,583 bp mitochondrial genome of Lamprologus signatus (Poll, 1952) was determined from a specimen sourced from Lake Tanganyika. The mitogenome contains 37 genes [13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes] and a putative control region, which consists of 27.1% A, 27.0% T, 29.9% C, and 16.0% G, with a total G + C content of 45.9%. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on mitochondrial PCGs suggested that L. signatus is clustered with members of the tribes Haplochromini and Tropheini. As this is the first report of the entire mitogenome in the tribe Lamprologini, the complete mitochondrial sequence information of L. sigantus will be useful in determining phylogenetic relationships of Pseudocrenilabrinae tribes.

Project description:In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of Heros severus Heckel, 1840 (Perciformes, Cichlidae). This mitochondrial genome, consisting of 16,577 base pairs (bp), contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and 2 noncoding control regions (control region and origin of light-strand replication) as those found in other vertebrates. Control region, of 917 bp in length, is located between tRNAPro and tRNAPhe. Within the control region, typical conserved domains, such as the termination-associated sequence (TAS), central, and conserved sequence blocks domains were identified. The overall base composition of the heavy strand shows 27.6% of T, 26.3% of C, 29.3% of A, and 16.8% of G, with a slight A + T rich feature (56.9%). The complete mitogenome data provide useful genetic markers for the studies on the molecular identification, population genetics, phylogenetic analysis, and conservation genetics.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Sarotherodon galilaeus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Cichlidae) and its phylogenetic placement.

Project description:Sarotherodon galilaeus (Linnaeus, 1758), a cichlid species that is naturally distributed in African and Eurasian waters, was introduced in many Asian countries for aquaculture. To date, rare genetic studies focused on this species have hindered our understanding of this species. Here, we reported the complete mitochondrial genome of S. galilaeus that was sequenced using next-generation sequencing technology. The resulting mitogenome of S. galilaeus was 16,630 in length and comprised 13 protein-coding genes (PCG), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA), and one control region (D-loop). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that Oreochromini species contained two lineages (I and II) and S. galilaeus clustered with Oreochromis aureus rather than other Sarotherodon species.

Characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome of the firemouth cichlid, Thorichthys meeki (Perciformes: Cichlidae).

Project description:Here, we report information on the complete mitochondrial genome of the firemouth cichlid, Thorichthys meeki (Brind 1918). Illumina HiSeq genome sequencing produced the assembly of a circular mitogenome of 16,527 base pairs (bp) from T. meeki consisting of 46.8% GC nucleotides, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and a putative control region as shown in the typical teleost gene composition. The gene order of the T. meeki mitogenome was identical to that of other cichlid species. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on mitochondrial PCGs showed a close relationship of T. meeki with Thorichthys aureus (Gunther 1862) within Heroini tribe.

Characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome of the rainbow krib, Pelvicachromis pulcher (Perciformes: Cichlidae).

Project description:We report the complete mitochondrial genome information of the rainbow krib, Pelvicachromis pulcher (Boulenger 1901). Illumina HiSeq genome sequencing allowed the assembly of a circular mitogenome of 17,196 base pairs (bp) from P. pulcher consisting of 47% GC nucleotides, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and a putative control region in the typical teleost gene composition. The gene order of the P. pulcher mitogenome was identical to that of other cichlid species. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on mitochondrial PCGs showed a relationship of P. pulcher with a cichlid Tylochromis polylepis (Boulenger 1900), suggesting that more complete mitogenomes are needed to explore mitogenome evolution in West African tribes and riverine cichlids, as this genomic information is the first complete mitogenome in the tribe Chromidotilapiini.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Copadichromis virginalis (Cichlidae).

Project description:In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of Copadichromis virginalis (Cichlidae fish). The mitochondrial genome is 16 704 bp in length and has a base composition of A (27.6%), T (30.1%), C (15.7%) and G (26.6%), demonstrating a slight bias of high AT content (57.6%). It contains 35 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs and two rRNAs) and a non-coding A + T rich region (D-loop region). The mitochondial genome of Copadichromis virginalis presents a clear bias in nucleotied composition with a positive AT-skew and a negative GC-skew. Except for ND6 gene, all other protein-coding genes were located on the H-strand. ND4 gene and ND4L gene were overlapped by 5 bp, ATP8 gene and ATP6 gene were overlapped by 9 bp. The nucleotide sequence of 13 protein-coding genes of Copadichromis virginalis and other 19 Cichlidae species were used for phylogenetic analysis. The result indicated Copadichromis virginalis a close relationship with species Astatotilapia calliptera.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Trematomus newnesi (Perciformes, Nototheniidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Trematomus newnesi was sequenced using an Illumina platform. The 18,602 bp mitogenome contains 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs, and 23 tRNAs (tRNAMet is duplicated). The eight stop codons are TAA, TAG, CTT, GTA, AAT, ACT, AGG, and TTA. Two start codons ATG and GTG are present. The GC content is 44.4% and AT content is 55.6%. A phylogenetic tree was generated using 13 species from three families. The results showed that T. newnesi is closely related to Pagothenia borchgrevinki in Nototheniidae. This study provides fundamental data for further genetic evolutionary studies on T. newnesi.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Lycodes tanakae (Perciformes: Zoarcidae).

Its mitochondrial genome was 16,594 base pairs in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and one control region. Its overall A, C, G, and T contents were 25.6%, 30.6%, 18.7%, and 25.2%, respectively. Its, A + T content (50.8%) was slightly higher than its G + C content (49.2%). A phylogenetic tree was built using 10 belonging to the order Perciformes and two species belonging to the order Scorpaeniformes.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Archamia macropterus was determined. The complete mitochondrial genome was 16,513 bp in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 2 non-coding region (the control region and the origin of light strand replication). The overall base composition was A 26.37%, T 25.61%, C 30.80%, and G 17.22%. All protein-coding genes started with an ATG initiation codon, except COI used GTG. With the exception of ND6, all other genes were encoded on the heavy strand, the NJ tree demonstrated that A. macropterus has a closest relationship with Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus and Apogon semilineatus.

Project description:Analysis of the marine black prickleback Xiphister atropurpureus Kittlitz using 76?bp paired-end Illumina sequences resulted in the assembly of its complete mitogenome. The mitogenome is 16,518?bp in length and contains an origin of light strand replication (OL), control region, 22 tRNA, 2 rRNA, and 13 protein-coding genes. Content and organization of the X. atropurpureus mitogenome is consistent with other teleost. Phylogenetic analysis of X. atropurpureus resolves it in a clade with another member of the Stichaeidae, Chirolophis japonicus Herzenstein.
