RETRACTED ARTICLE: Predatory publishing in Scopus: evidence on cross-country differences.

Project description:Predatory publishing represents a major challenge to scholarly communication. This paper maps the infiltration of journals suspected of predatory practices into the citation database Scopus and examines cross-country differences in the propensity of scholars to publish in such journals. Using the names of "potential, possible, or probable" predatory journals and publishers on Beall's lists, we derived the ISSNs of 3,293 journals from Ulrichsweb and searched Scopus with them. 324 of journals that appear both in Beall's lists and Scopus with 164 thousand articles published over 2015-2017 were identified. Analysis of data for 172 countries in 4 fields of research indicates that there is a remarkable heterogeneity. In the most affected countries, including Kazakhstan and Indonesia, around 17% of articles fall into the predatory category, while some other countries have no predatory articles whatsoever. Countries with large research sectors at the medium level of economic development, especially in Asia and North Africa, tend to be most susceptible to predatory publishing. Arab, oil-rich and/or eastern countries also appear to be particularly vulnerable. Policymakers and stakeholders in these and other developing countries need to pay more attention to the quality of research evaluation.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at (10.1007/s11192-020-03852-4).

CCL4 Stimulates Cell Migration in Human Osteosarcoma via the mir-3927-3p/Integrin αvβ3 Axis.

Project description:Osteosarcoma is the most common type of primary malignant bone cancer, and it is associated with high rates of pulmonary metastasis. Integrin αvβ3 is critical for osteosarcoma cell migratory and invasive abilities. Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 4 (CCL4) has diverse effects on different cancer cells through its interaction with its specific receptor, C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5). Analysis of mRNA expression in human osteosarcoma tissue identified upregulated levels of CCL4, integrin αv and β3 expression. Similarly, an analysis of records from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset showed that CCL4 was upregulated in human osteosarcoma tissue. Importantly, the expression of both CCL4 and integrin αvβ3 correlated positively with osteosarcoma clinical stages and lung metastasis. Analysis of osteosarcoma cell lines identified that CCL4 promotes integrin αvβ3 expression and cell migration by activating the focal adhesion kinase (FAK), protein kinase B (AKT), and hypoxia inducible factor 1 subunit alpha (HIF-1α) signaling pathways, which can downregulate microRNA-3927-3p expression. Pharmacological inhibition of CCR5 by maraviroc (MVC) prevented increases in integrin αvβ3 expression and cell migration. This study is the first to implicate CCL4 as a potential target in the treatment of metastatic osteosarcoma.

Retracted Article: Long noncoding RNA ANRIL knockdown increases sensitivity of non-small cell lung cancer to cisplatin by regulating the miR-656-3p/SOX4 axis.

Project description:Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are implicated in the development of chemoresistance in many cancers. However, the effect and mechanism of lncRNA antisense noncoding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) on cisplatin (CDDP) resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain unclear. The levels of ANRIL, microRNA (miR)-656-3p and sex-determining region Y-related high-mobility group box 4 (SOX4) in NSCLC tissues and cells were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction or western blotting. Cell viability, apoptosis, migration and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) were assessed by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT assay), flow cytometry, trans-well assays and western blotting, respectively. The xenograft model was established using CDDP-resistant NSCLC cells. The target association between miR-656-3p and ANRIL or SOX4 was validated by luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation. ANRIL expression was increased in CDDP-resistant NSCLC tissues and cells. Knockdown of ANRIL decreased cell viability, migration and EMT but induced apoptosis in CDDP-resistant NSCLC cells. Moreover, silencing of ANRIL reduced xenograft tumor growth in vivo. miR-656-3p was targeted by ANRIL and its exhaustion attenuated the suppressive role of ANRIL knockdown in CDDP resistance in NSCLC cells. SOX4 acted as a target of miR-656-3p and was positively regulated by ANRIL. Collectively, interference of ANRIL repressed CDDP resistance through promoting apoptosis and inhibiting cell viability, migration and EMT by up-regulating miR-656-3p and down-regulating SOX4, indicating a new target to improve the chemotherapeutic efficacy in NSCLC.

miR-877-3p inhibits tumor growth and angiogenesis of osteosarcoma through fibroblast growth factor 2 signaling.

Project description:Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common high-grade malignant bone tumor in teenagers. MicroRNAs can function as posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression, playing critical roles in cancer dev-877-3p in OS. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR was carried out for detecting miR-877-3p expression in OS. The effects of miR-877-3p on proliferation was analyzed via MTT, colony formation, and flow cytometry assays. Angiogenesis of endothelial cells were investigated by wound healing and tube formation assay. Gene profiling based on PCR array and luciferase reporter assay were conducted to determine target genes of miR-877-3p. In-vivo study was used to determine the effects of miR-877-3p on the tumor growth. The expression of miR-877-3p was markedly downregulated in OS tissues and cell lines. Low expression of miR-877-3p predicts poor prognosis of OS patients. miR-877-3p overexpression was found to inhibit the proliferation of OS cell lines. The angiogenesis assays showed that miR-877-3p attenuated the angiogenesis. Further mechanism studies showed that miR-877-3p can reduce (Fibroblast Growth Factor 2) FGF2 expression in OS cells by binding to the 3'UTR end of FGF2. Moreover, increased expression of miR-877-3p was responsible for the inhibition of tumor growth and angiogenesis. Taken together, our findings indicated that miR-877-3p might exhibit tumor suppressive role by targeting FGF2 signaling, which may serve as potential target for OS.

Project description:Acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a), as a member of the proton-gated cation channel family, can be activated by low extracellular pH, and takes part in many acidity-associated physiopathological processes. However, whether ASIC1a is expressed in human pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs) and involved in acid-induced physiopathological events has not been reported yet. In this study, we investigated the expression of ASIC1a in PSCs and its possible role in the activation and autophagy of PSCs evoked by extracellular acid. Our results show that ASIC1a is present in PSCs, and an enhanced expression of ASIC1a occurs under acid stimuli. More importantly, the activation and autophagy of PSCs can be induced in acidic medium, and inhibition of ASIC1a by ASIC1a-specific blocker psalmotoxin-1 (PcTx1) or siRNA knockdown could suppress these two acid-associated processes. Collectively, our present study reports for the first time that ASIC1a is expressed in PSCs, and provides evidence for the involvement of ASIC1a in the acidic microenvironment-induced activation and autophagy of PSCs.
