During photosynthesis, energy is transiently stored as an electrochemical proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane. The resulting proton motive force (pmf) is composed of a membrane potential (ΔΨ) and a proton concentration gradient (ΔpH) and powers the synthesis of ATP.
