Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a multidimensional impact on mental health due to health concerns, social distancing and lockdowns, job loss, and limits in institutional support. Accordingly, COVID-19 may disproportionally impact families with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) due to the already high prevalence of mental health conditions in children with SEND and their parents. Hence, it is essential to determine the short-term impact of the pandemic on the mental health of families with SEND to identify their ongoing health, including psychological wellbeing and support needs. The current study examines the anxiety level and concerns of children with SEND and their parents living in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional national study design was utilized as a part of an international consortium using an online Arabic survey. Data were collected from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development beneficiaries from May to July 2020. The sample consisted of 1,848 parents of children with SEND aged between 1 and 18 years (mean = 9.66; SD = 4.31). A descriptive and bivariant analysis is reported. Parental worries on all those concerns when the pandemic started were significantly higher than before the pandemic, p < 0.050. Parental-perceived general anxiety had risen significantly across time, p < 0.001, and their perceived anxiety when the pandemic started exceeded their anxiety before the pandemic, p < 0.001. The general anxiety of children with SEND had risen significantly across time (from before the pandemic to when it had started to during the pandemic), p < 0.001. The children's general worries at the start of the pandemic had correlated significantly and positively with their anxiety, adaptive, maladaptive, and coping efficacies, and parental anxiety scores, p < 0.010 each. Anxiety levels were high in SEND and their caregivers before and during COVID-19. At the start of the pandemic, the anxiety, adaptive, maladaptive, coping efficacies, and parental anxiety scores of children with SEND were significantly and favorably correlated. These findings support the notion of SEND-specific anxiety and patterns of coping in SEND and their caregivers. The notion also attests to the institutional support required for this specifically vulnerable population during epidemics.

Project description:BackgroundChildren with special educational needs (SEN) are more vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic with risk of poor mental wellbeing and child maltreatment.ObjectiveTo examine the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of children with SEN and their maltreatment risk.Participants and setting417 children with SEN studying at special schools and 25,427 children with typical development (TD) studying at mainstream schools completed an online survey in April 2020 in Hong Kong during school closures due to COVID-19.MethodEmotional/behavioural difficulties, quality of life and parental stress of children with SEN were compared with typically developed children using mixed effect model. Linear regression analyses were performed to explore factors associated with child emotional/behavioural difficulties and parental stress during the pandemic. Chi-square test was performed to detect the differences in maltreatment risk before and during COVID-19.ResultsChildren with SEN had significantly poorer overall quality of life (68.05 vs 80.65, p < 0.01). 23.5% of children had at least one episode of severe physical assault and 1.9% experienced very severe physical assault during COVID-19. Rates of physical assault increased significantly (59.8% vs. 71.2% p < 0.001) while children with mental disorders had increased risk of severe physical assault comparing to those without mental disorders (RR = 1.58, ꭓ2 = 5.19 p = 0.023).ConclusionChildren with SEN had poorer mental health than typically developed children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Maltreatment risk for children with SEN is higher in comparison to pre-COVID-19 era. Surveillance of child maltreatment, continuity of medical and rehabilitation care to support children with SEN are essential during a disease pandemic.

Project description:COVID-19 has affected people across the world. The current study examined anxiety and worries during the first UK national lockdown in March 2020. Parents (n = 402) reported on their own anxiety and worries as well as that of their son/daughter with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and typically developing (TD) child (n = 186) at three time points. Although both groups showed increased anxiety across the three time points, levels of anxiety in the SEND group, but not the TD siblings, were predicted by awareness about COVID-19. In addition, worries differed between the groups showing that COVID-19 impacts the wellbeing of those with SEND differently to that of their TD siblings.

Project description:Interactive apps delivered on touch-screen tablets can be effective at supporting the acquisition of basic skills in mainstream primary school children. This technology may also be beneficial for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) as it can promote high levels of engagement with the learning task and an inclusive learning environment. However, few studies have measured extent of learning for SEND pupils when using interactive apps, so it has yet to be determined if this technology is effective at raising attainment for these pupils. We report the first observational study of a group of 33 pupils with SEND from two primary schools in Malawi that are implementing a new digital technology intervention which uses touch-screen tablets to deliver interactive apps designed to teach basic mathematical skills. The apps contain topics that align to the national curriculum. To assess learning gains, rate of progress (minutes per topic) for each pupil was determined by calculating the average time taken to complete a topic. Progress rate was then correlated with teacher ratings of extent of disability and independent ratings of pupil engagement with the apps. Results showed SEND pupils could interact with the apps and all pupils passed at least one topic. Average progress rate for SEND pupils was twice as long as mainstream peers. Stepwise regression revealed extent of disability significantly predicted progress rate. Further exploratory correlations revealed pupils with moderate to severe difficulties with hearing and/or language made slower progress through the apps than those with greater functionality in these two domains because the use of verbal instructions within the apps limited their capacity to learn. This original quantitative analysis demonstrates that interactive apps can raise learning standards in pupils with SEND but may have limited utility for pupils with severe difficulties. Software modifications are needed to address specific areas of difficulty preventing pupils from progressing.

Project description:ImportanceThere is limited evidence on whether the quality of life and behavior of children with special educational needs (SEN) have improved or worsened since schools reopened after COVID-19-related school closures.ObjectiveTo describe the changes in the mental well-being of children and adolescents with SEN during the initial 6 months of resuming in-person learning after COVID-19-related school closures.Design, setting, and participantsThis repeated cross-sectional study reported data from surveys completed by parents and caregivers of children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 years with SEN studying at special schools in Hong Kong. The first cohort was obtained during COVID-19-related school closure in April 2020 (wave 1) and the second cohort was obtained 6 months after school resumption with data collection between July and October 2021 (wave 2). Data analysis occurred from January to June 2022.ExposureDiagnosis of a disability or disorder that required school-based special educational programming.Main outcomes and measuresChildren's emotional and behavioral difficulties (measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire [SDQ]), quality of life (measured with the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory [PedsQL]), lifestyle habits, parental stress, and parental well-being (measured with the PedsQL Family Impact Module) were assessed. Cross-sectional comparisons of well-being between the 2 waves were conducted using analysis of covariance, and multiple regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with mental health outcomes in wave 2.ResultsIn wave 1, a total of 456 parents and caregivers of children with SEN (mean [SD] age, 7.44 [3.98] years; 315 boys [69.1%]; 141 girls [30.9%]) responded to the surveys. In wave 2, 519 parents and caregivers of children with SEN (mean [SD] age, 8.16 [4.47] years; 365 boys [70.3%]; 154 girls [29.7%]) responded. After school resumption, preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years with SEN had significantly fewer emotional difficulties (mean [SD] SDQ score, 3.26 [2.39] vs 2.68 [2.03]; standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.26; 95% CI, 0.07-0.46; Bonferroni-corrected P = .04) and conduct difficulties (mean [SD] SDQ score, 2.88 [1.89] vs 2.41 [1.91]; SMD = 0.25; 95% CI, 0.05-0.44; Bonferroni-corrected P = .01), whereas adolescents had more conduct difficulties (mean [SD] SDQ score, 1.62 [1.50] vs 2.37 [3.02]; SMD = 0.41; 95% CI, 0.13-0.70; Bonferroni-corrected P = .049). The overall quality of life of school-aged children with SEN aged 6 to 11 years worsened after school resumption (mean [SD] PedsQL score, 67.52 [17.45] vs 60.57 [16.52]; SMD = 0.41; 95% CI, 0.19-0.62; Bonferroni-corrected P = .002).Conclusions and relevanceThe findings of this repeated cross-sectional study suggest that preschoolers with SEN had improved emotional and behavioral functioning when school resumed after COVID-19-related closures. School-aged children with SEN, adolescents with SEN, and children with intellectual disabilities were at risk of reduced quality of life, indicating that additional support should be offered to vulnerable groups as they return to schools.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic forced changes in the educational response, which involved the intensive use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills, among other interventions. The circumstances required both families and teachers to make an extra effort to adapt to a reality that was expected to last for a long time. These changes had a special impact on students with Specific Needs of Educational Support (SNES) and Special Educational Needs (SEN). This study aimed to design and validate a questionnaire to assess the impact of the online training model used during the pandemic on teachers of students with SNES and SEN. We used qualitative, exploratory, and confirmatory factor analyses. The final 16-item scale was composed of three factors. Factor1, was labeled as “Educational Response.“, factor2 was labeled “ICT Usage and Online Teaching,” and Factor 3 was labeled “Impact.” The questionnaire demonstrated good validity and reliability. This short questionnaire is recommended for assessing or monitoring the impact of changes in educational interventions involving ICT competencies due to COVID-19. However, they can also be easily adapted to similar circumstances or educational settings.

Project description:BackgroundCOVID-19 is likely to have negatively impacted foster families but few data sources are available to confirm this.ObjectiveThe current study used Reddit social media data to examine how foster families are faring in the pandemic. Discussion topics were identified and examined for changes before and after COVID-19.Participants and settingComments were collected from three Reddit online discussion boards dedicated to foster families (N = 11,830).MethodsWe used machine learning techniques, including Latent Dirichlet Allocation, for topic modeling and textual analysis for qualitative coding of the Reddit comments.ResultsResults showed that three main topics had both significant quantitative and meaningful qualitative changes before and after COVID-19. There were significant increases in conversation about becoming a foster parent (F = 5.75, p = 0.02) and activities for foster children (F = 10.61, p = 0.001), whereas there was a significant decrease in discussing permanency (F = 9.46, p = 0.003) before and after the onset of COVID-19. Qualitative coding showed that regarding the topic of becoming a parent, excitement over approval of foster care license before COVID-19 shifted to foster families' increased anxieties about delays in their licensing cases after COVID-19. For permanency, content changed from the best interest of the child and reunifications before COVID-19 to concerns over family separations and permanency challenges after COVID-19. Regarding activities for foster children, content related to everyday activities before COVID-19 changed to specific activities foster children and families could do during lockdowns. Results suggest areas child welfare workers may focus on to better support foster families during and after the pandemic.

Project description:BackgroundPeople with intellectual disabilities (IDs) and their caregivers face difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, limited studies have comprehensively investigated their challenges, especially in Japan. We aimed to clarify the concerns and needs of people with IDs and their caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.MethodFrom March to August 2021, 27 in-depth interviews were conducted with principal caregivers of people with moderate to profound IDs in Japan. We then transcribed the interviews and conducted deductive coding using predetermined codes focused on their daily life difficulties. Inductive coding was used to ensure that no important themes were overlooked.ResultsWe found four concerns and four needs among people with IDs and their caregivers as significant themes.ConclusionsOur results provide useful information for supporting people with IDs and their caregivers, especially among those who need medical or social care in accordance with the infection control and social-distancing policies.

Project description:BackgroundSupportive parenting is critical for promoting healthy child development in the face of stressors, such as those occurring during COVID-19. Here, we address a knowledge gap regarding specific household risk factors associated with parenting quality during the pandemic and incorporate first-person accounts of family challenges and needs.MethodsMixed methods were applied to data collected between April 14th - 28th, 2020 from the "Parenting During the Pandemic" survey. Participants included 656 primary caregivers (e.g., mothers, fathers, foster parents) of least one child age 1.5-8 years of which 555 (84.6%) responded to at least one parenting questionnaire. Parenting quality was assessed across stressful, negative, and positive parenting dimensions. Household risk was examined across pandemic- linked (e.g., caregiver depression, unmet childcare needs) and stable factors (i.e., annual income, mental illness history). Significant correlates were examined with regressions in Mplus. Thematic analysis identified caregiver challenges and unmet needs from open-ended questions.FindingsCaregiver depression, higher child parity, unmet childcare needs, and relationship distress predicted lower-quality parenting. Caregiver depression was the most significant predictor across every parenting dimension, with analyses indicating medium effect sizes, ds = .39 - .73. Qualitative findings highlighted severe strains on parent capacities including managing psychological distress, limited social supports, and too much unstructured time.InterpretationsLower quality parenting during COVID-19 is associated with multiple household and pandemic risk factors, with caregiver depression consistently linked to parent- child relationship disruptions. Focused efforts are needed to address caregiver mental health to protect child health as part of the pandemic response.

Project description:BackgroundFamilies with young children have faced serious challenges during the first lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to remote working, parents have had to monitor their children's schoolwork and manage their daily lives. When one of the children also has neuro-developmental disorders, this results in an increased burden. We can therefore wonder how these families with one or more young children (under 6 years old) with special needs have experienced and dealt with this lockdown.Aim of the studyIn this context, the "COVJEUNENFANT" study focused more specifically on the subjective experience, as a parent, of those who cared for children with special needs (i.e., with developmental disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, proven disabilities or chronic health conditions) compared to the general population. We wished to see if the consequences of the health crisis were significantly different from those perceived by respondents in the general population (n = 490) and if the sociodemographic structure of these families differed from those of other respondents.MethodsNinety three French families with at least one child under 6 years old and one with developmental difficulties or a chronic illness, from a cohort of 490 control families, participated in a web-based survey during the first lockdown, from the 28th April 2020 to 29th May 2020.ResultsAfter presenting the participants' sociodemographic characteristics, the results show that these French families (n = 93) are less wealthy than the control population "without special needs" (n = 397), have felt more pressures originating from their environment (families, friends, colleagues, media, social networks…), have suffered from more health issues (other than COVID-19), have taken more measures to protect themselves (social-distancing), and were less likely to feel happy. A significantly larger number of them lamented the lack of free time and voiced a larger need for information regarding children's education. However, their parental role was felt as being more satisfying and their family relations strengthened more than in the general population of participants.ConclusionIt is apparent that urgent prioritisation is needed in order to support and care for these families by continuing to provide care for their children in one way or another, and by ensuring that their need to adapt again does not exceed their own abilities and resources, especially as young children, who have high levels of requirements, are present in the home.
