Enhancement of loudness discrimination acuity for self-generated sound is independent of musical experience.

ABSTRACT: Musicians tend to have better auditory and motor performance than non-musicians because of their extensive musical experience. In a previous study, we established that loudness discrimination acuity is enhanced when sound is produced by a precise force generation task. In this study, we compared the enhancement effect between experienced pianists and non-musicians. Without the force generation task, loudness discrimination acuity was better in pianists than non-musicians in the condition. However, the force generation task enhanced loudness discrimination acuity similarly in both pianists and non-musicians. The reaction time was also reduced with the force control task, but only in the non-musician group. The results suggest that the enhancement of loudness discrimination acuity with the precise force generation task is independent of musical experience and is, therefore, a fundamental function in auditory-motor interaction.

Musical expertise and the ability to imagine loudness.

Project description:Most perceived parameters of sound (e.g. pitch, duration, timbre) can also be imagined in the absence of sound. These parameters are imagined more veridically by expert musicians than non-experts. Evidence for whether loudness is imagined, however, is conflicting. In music, the question of whether loudness is imagined is particularly relevant due to its role as a principal parameter of performance expression. This study addressed the hypothesis that the veridicality of imagined loudness improves with increasing musical expertise. Experts, novices and non-musicians imagined short passages of well-known classical music under two counterbalanced conditions: 1) while adjusting a slider to indicate imagined loudness of the music and 2) while tapping out the rhythm to indicate imagined timing. Subtests assessed music listening abilities and working memory span to determine whether these factors, also hypothesised to improve with increasing musical expertise, could account for imagery task performance. Similarity between each participant's imagined and listening loudness profiles and reference recording intensity profiles was assessed using time series analysis and dynamic time warping. The results suggest a widespread ability to imagine the loudness of familiar music. The veridicality of imagined loudness tended to be greatest for the expert musicians, supporting the predicted relationship between musical expertise and musical imagery ability.

Color improves "visual" acuity via sound.

Project description:Visual-to-auditory sensory substitution devices (SSDs) convey visual information via sound, with the primary goal of making visual information accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals. We developed the EyeMusic SSD, which transforms shape, location, and color information into musical notes. We tested the "visual" acuity of 23 individuals (13 blind and 10 blindfolded sighted) on the Snellen tumbling-E test, with the EyeMusic. Participants were asked to determine the orientation of the letter "E." The test was repeated twice: in one test, the letter "E" was drawn with a single color (white), and in the other test, with two colors (red and white). In the latter case, the vertical line in the letter, when upright, was drawn in red, with the three horizontal lines drawn in white. We found no significant differences in performance between the blind and the sighted groups. We found a significant effect of the added color on the "visual" acuity. The highest acuity participants reached in the monochromatic test was 20/800, whereas with the added color, acuity doubled to 20/400. We conclude that color improves "visual" acuity via sound.

Musicians demonstrate experience-dependent brainstem enhancement of musical scale features within continuously gliding pitch.

Project description:In contrast to language, where pitch patterns consist of continuous and curvilinear contours, musical pitch consists of relatively discrete, stair-stepped sequences of notes. Behavioral and neurophysiological studies suggest that both tone-language and music experience enhance the representation of pitch cues associated with a listener's domain of expertise, e.g., curvilinear pitch in language, discrete scale steps in music. We compared brainstem frequency-following responses (FFRs) of English-speaking musicians (musical pitch experience) and native speakers of Mandarin Chinese (linguistic pitch experience) elicited by rising and falling tonal sweeps that are exemplary of Mandarin tonal contours but uncharacteristic of the pitch patterns typically found in music. In spite of musicians' unfamiliarity with such glides, we find that their brainstem FFRs show enhancement of the stimulus where the curvilinear sweep traverses discrete notes along the diatonic musical scale. This enhancement was note specific in that it was not observed immediately preceding or following the scale tone of interest (passing note). No such enhancements were observed in Chinese listeners. These findings suggest that the musician's brainstem may be differentially tuned by long-term exposure to the pitch patterns inherent to music, extracting pitch in relation to a fixed, hierarchical scale.

Vibrotactile enhancement of musical engagement.

Project description:Sound is sensed by the ear but can also be felt on the skin, by means of vibrotactile stimulation. Only little research has addressed perceptual implications of vibrotactile stimulation in the realm of music. Here, we studied which perceptual dimensions of music listening are affected by vibrotactile stimulation and whether the spatial segregation of vibrations improves vibrotactile stimulation. Forty-one listeners were presented with vibrotactile stimuli via a chair's surfaces (left and right arm rests, back rest, seat) in addition to music presented over headphones. Vibrations for each surface were derived from individual tracks of the music (multi condition) or conjointly by a mono-rendering, in addition to incongruent and headphones-only conditions. Listeners evaluated unknown music from popular genres according to valence, arousal, groove, the feeling of being part of a live performance, the feeling of being part of the music, and liking. Results indicated that the multi- and mono vibration conditions robustly enhanced the nature of the musical experience compared to listening via headphones alone. Vibrotactile enhancement was strong in the latent dimension of 'musical engagement', encompassing the sense of being a part of the music, arousal, and groove. These findings highlight the potential of vibrotactile cues for creating intensive musical experiences.

Visual adaptation enhances action sound discrimination.

Project description:Prolonged exposure, or adaptation, to a stimulus in 1 modality can bias, but also enhance, perception of a subsequent stimulus presented within the same modality. However, recent research has also found that adaptation in 1 modality can bias perception in another modality. Here, we show a novel crossmodal adaptation effect, where adaptation to a visual stimulus enhances subsequent auditory perception. We found that when compared to no adaptation, prior adaptation to visual, auditory, or audiovisual hand actions enhanced discrimination between 2 subsequently presented hand action sounds. Discrimination was most enhanced when the visual action "matched" the auditory action. In addition, prior adaptation to a visual, auditory, or audiovisual action caused subsequent ambiguous action sounds to be perceived as less like the adaptor. In contrast, these crossmodal action aftereffects were not generated by adaptation to the names of actions. Enhanced crossmodal discrimination and crossmodal perceptual aftereffects may result from separate mechanisms operating in audiovisual action sensitive neurons within perceptual systems. Adaptation-induced crossmodal enhancements cannot be explained by postperceptual responses or decisions. More generally, these results together indicate that adaptation is a ubiquitous mechanism for optimizing perceptual processing of multisensory stimuli.

Cross-Modal Musical Expectancy in Complex Sound Music: A Grounded Theory.

Project description:Expectancy is a core mechanism for constructing affective and cognitive experiences of music. However, research on musical expectations has been largely founded upon the perception of tonal music. Therefore, it is still to be determined how this mechanism explains the cognition of sound-based acoustic and electroacoustic music, such as complex sound music (CSM). Additionally, the dominant methodologies have consisted of well-controlled experimental designs with low ecological validity that have overlooked the listening experience as described by the listeners. This paper presents results concerning musical expectancy from a qualitative research project that investigated the listening experiences of 15 participants accustomed to CSM listening. Corbin and Strauss' (2015) grounded theory was used to triangulate data from interviews along with musical analyses of the pieces chosen by the participants to describe their listening experiences. Cross-modal musical expectancy (CMME) emerged from the data as a subcategory that explained prediction through the interaction of multimodal elements beyond just the acoustic properties of music. The results led to hypothesise that multimodal information coming from sounds, performance gestures, and indexical, iconic, and conceptual associations re-enact cross-modal schemata and episodic memories where real and imagined sounds, objects, actions, and narratives interrelate to give rise to CMME processes. This construct emphasises the effect of CSM's subversive acoustic features and performance practices on the listening experience. Further, it reveals the multiplicity of factors involved in musical expectancy, such as cultural values, subjective musical and non-musical experiences, music structure, listening situation, and psychological mechanisms. Following these ideas, CMME is conceived as a grounded cognition process.

Linking musical metaphors and emotions evoked by the sound of classical music.

Project description:Musical meaning is often described in terms of emotions and metaphors. While many theories encapsulate one or the other, very little empirical data is available to test a possible link between the two. In this article, we examined the metaphorical and emotional contents of Western classical music using the answers of 162 participants. We calculated generalized linear mixed-effects models, correlations, and multidimensional scaling to connect emotions and metaphors. It resulted in each metaphor being associated with different specific emotions, subjective levels of entrainment, and acoustic and perceptual characteristics. How these constructs relate to one another could be based on the embodied knowledge and the perception of movement in space. For instance, metaphors that rely on movement are related to emotions associated with movement. In addition, measures in this study could also be represented by underlying dimensions such as valence and arousal. Musical writing and music education could benefit greatly from these results. Finally, we suggest that music researchers consider musical metaphors in their work as we provide an empirical method for it.

Effect of Frequency Response Manipulations on Musical Sound Quality for Cochlear Implant Users.

Project description:Cochlear implant (CI) users commonly report degraded musical sound quality. To improve CI-mediated music perception and enjoyment, we must understand factors that affect sound quality. In the present study, we utilize frequency response manipulation (FRM), a process that adjusts the energies of frequency bands within an audio signal, to determine its impact on CI-user sound quality assessments of musical stimuli. Thirty-three adult CI users completed an online study and listened to FRM-altered clips derived from the top songs in Billboard magazine. Participants assessed sound quality using the MUltiple Stimulus with Hidden Reference and Anchor for CI users (CI-MUSHRA) rating scale. FRM affected sound quality ratings (SQR). Specifically, increasing the gain for low and mid-range frequencies led to higher quality ratings than reducing them. In contrast, manipulating the gain for high frequencies (those above 2 kHz) had no impact. Participants with musical training were more sensitive to FRM than non-musically trained participants and demonstrated preference for gain increases over reductions. These findings suggest that, even among CI users, past musical training provides listeners with subtleties in musical appraisal, even though their hearing is now mediated electrically and bears little resemblance to their musical experience prior to implantation. Increased gain below 2 kHz may lead to higher sound quality than for equivalent reductions, perhaps because it offers greater access to lyrics in songs or because it provides more salient beat sensations.

Effects of pitch and musical sounds on body-representations when moving with sound.

Project description:The effects of music on bodily movement and feelings, such as when people are dancing or engaged in physical activity, are well-documented-people may move in response to the sound cues, feel powerful, less tired. How sounds and bodily movements relate to create such effects? Here we deconstruct the problem and investigate how different auditory features affect people's body-representation and feelings even when paired with the same movement. In three experiments, participants executed a simple arm raise synchronised with changing pitch in simple tones (Experiment 1), rich musical sounds (Experiment 2) and within different frequency ranges (Experiment 3), while we recorded indirect and direct measures on their movement, body-representations and feelings. Changes in pitch influenced people's general emotional state as well as the various bodily dimensions investigated-movement, proprioceptive awareness and feelings about one's body and movement. Adding harmonic content amplified the differences between ascending and descending sounds, while shifting the absolute frequency range had a general effect on movement amplitude, bodily feelings and emotional state. These results provide new insights in the role of auditory and musical features in dance and exercise, and have implications for the design of sound-based applications supporting movement expression, physical activity, or rehabilitation.
