Nanoscale Charge Density and Dynamics in Graphene Oxide.

ABSTRACT: Graphene oxide (GO) is widely used as a component in thin film optoelectronic device structures for practical reasons because its electronic and optical properties can be controlled. Progress critically depends on elucidating the nanoscale electronic structure of GO. However, direct experimental access is challenging because of its disordered and nonconductive character. Here, we quantitatively mapped the nanoscopic charge distribution and charge dynamics of an individual GO sheet by using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Charge domains are identified, presenting important charge interactions below distances of 20 nm. Charge dynamics with very long relaxation times of at least several hours and a logarithmic decay of the time correlation function are in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations, revealing an universal hopping transport mechanism best described by Efros-Shklovskii's law.

Effect of pristine graphene incorporation on charge storage mechanism of three-dimensional graphene oxide: superior energy and power density retention.

Project description:In the race of gaining higher energy density, carbon's capacity to retain power density is generally lost due to defect incorporation and resistance increment in carbon electrode. Herein, a relationship between charge carrier density/charge movement and supercapacitance performance is established. For this purpose we have incorporated the most defect-free pristine graphene into defective/sacrificial graphene oxide. A unique co-solvent-based technique is applied to get a homogeneous suspension of single to bi-layer graphene and graphene oxide. This suspension is then transformed into a 3D composite structure of pristine graphene sheets (GSs) and defective N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-RGO), which is the first stable and homogenous 3D composite between GS and RGO to the best of our knowledge. It is found that incorporation of pristine graphene can drastically decrease defect density and thus decrease relaxation time due to improved associations between electrons in GS and ions in electrolyte. Furthermore, N doping is implemented selectively only on RGO and such doping is shown to improve the charge carrier density of the composite, which eventually improves the energy density. After all, the novel 3D composite structure of N-RGO and GS greatly improves energy and power density even at high current density (20?A/g).

Charge Dynamics Electron Microscopy: Nanoscale Imaging of Femtosecond Plasma Dynamics.

Project description:Understanding and actively controlling the spatiotemporal dynamics of nonequilibrium electron clouds is fundamental for the design of light and electron sources, high-power electronic devices, and plasma-based applications. However, electron clouds evolve in a complex collective fashion on the nanometer and femtosecond scales, producing electromagnetic screening that renders them inaccessible to existing optical probes. Here, we solve the long-standing challenge of characterizing the evolution of electron clouds generated upon irradiation of metallic structures using an ultrafast transmission electron microscope to record the charged plasma dynamics. Our approach to charge dynamics electron microscopy (CDEM) is based on the simultaneous detection of electron-beam acceleration and broadening with nanometer/femtosecond resolution. By combining experimental results with comprehensive microscopic theory, we provide a deep understanding of this highly out-of-equilibrium regime, including previously inaccessible intricate microscopic mechanisms of electron emission, screening by the metal, and collective cloud dynamics. Beyond the present specific demonstration, the here-introduced CDEM technique grants us access to a wide range of nonequilibrium electrodynamic phenomena involving the ultrafast evolution of bound and free charges on the nanoscale.

Nanoscale Bubble Dynamics Induced by Damage of Graphene Liquid Cells.

Project description:Graphene liquid cells provide the highest possible spatial resolution for liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy. Here, in graphene liquid cells (GLCs), we studied the nanoscale dynamics of bubbles induced by controllable damage in graphene. The extent of damage depended on the electron dose rate and the presence of bubbles in the cell. After graphene was damaged, air leaked from the bubbles into the water. We also observed the unexpected directional nucleation of new bubbles, which is beyond the explanation of conventional diffusion theory. We attributed this to the effect of nanoscale confinement. These findings provide new insights into complex fluid phenomena under nanoscale confinement.

Nanoscale Three-Dimensional Charge Density and Electric Field Mapping by Electron Holographic Tomography.

Project description:The operation of nanoscale electronic devices is related intimately to the three-dimensional (3D) charge density distributions within them. Here, we demonstrate the quantitative 3D mapping of the charge density and long-range electric field associated with an electrically biased carbon fiber nanotip with a spatial resolution of approximately 5 nm using electron holographic tomography in the transmission electron microscope combined with model-based iterative reconstruction. The approach presented here can be applied to a wide range of other nanoscale materials and devices.

Nanoscale graphene oxide (nGO) as artificial receptors: implications for biomolecular interactions and sensing.

Project description:The role of conventional graphene-oxide in biosensing has been limited to that of a quenching substrate or signal transducer due to size inconsistencies and poor supramolecular response. We overcame these issues by using nanoscale GOs (nGO) as artificial receptors. Unlike conventional GO, nGOs are sheets with near uniform lateral dimension of 20 nm. Due to its nanoscale architecture, its supramolecular response was enhanced, with demonstrated improvements in biomacromolecular affinities. This rendered their surface capable of detecting unknown proteins with cognizance not seen with conventional GOs. Different proteins at 100 and 10 nM concentrations revealed consistent patterns that are quantitatively differentiable by linear discriminant analysis. Identification of 48 unknowns in both concentrations demonstrated a >95% success rate. The 10 nM detection represents a 10-fold improvement over analogous arrays. This demonstrates for the first time that the supramolecular chemistry of GO is highly size dependent and opens the possibility of improvement upon existing GO hybrid materials.

Fingerprints of magnetoinduced charge density waves in monolayer graphene beyond half filling.

Project description:A charge density wave is a condensate of fermions, whose charge density shows a long-range periodic modulation. Such charge density wave can be principally described as a macroscopic quantum state and is known to occur by various formation mechanisms. These are the lattice deforming Peierls transition, the directional, fermionic wave vector orientation prone Fermi surface nesting or the generic charge ordering, which in contrast is associated solely with the undirected effective Coulomb interaction between fermions. In two-dimensional Dirac/Weyl-like systems, the existence of charge density waves is only theoretically predicted within the ultralow energy regime at half filling. Taking graphene as host of two-dimensional fermions described by a Dirac/Weyl Hamiltonian, we tuned indirectly the effective mutual Coulomb interaction between fermions through adsorption of tetracyanoquinodimethane on top in the low coverage limit. We thereby achieved the development of a novel, low-dimensional dissipative charge density wave of Weyl-like fermions, even beyond half filling with additional magneto-induced localization and quantization. This charge density wave appears both, in the electron and the hole spectrum.

Metal ion-directed solution-phase tailoring: from large-area graphene oxide into nanoscale pieces.

Project description:Due to fascinating electronic properties and great potential in various applications, graphene has attracted great interest. Recently, much work have focused on the synthesis of different sizes and properties of graphene or graphene oxides (GOs), for example, graphene nanoribbons, nanosized graphene pieces, and nanosized triangular and hexagonal graphene sheets terminated by zigzag edges. Herein, we have demonstrated a widely available approach to fabricate the nanoscale GO pieces by directly solution-phase cutting a large-area GO sheet into nanoscale pieces via spontaneous redox reactions at room temperature. In this process, GO acts with dual functions as a model and a reducing reagent. With a typical example of silver ions, we have investigated in detail the influence of the reaction time and concentration of metal ions on yield and size of nanoscale GO pieces. Moreover, we also obtain Ag nanoparticle coating on the GO surface. Finally, a possible mechanism is suggested to explain the formation of nanoscale GO pieces.

In situ topographical chemical and electrical imaging of carboxyl graphene oxide at the nanoscale.

Project description:Visualising the distribution of structural defects and functional groups present on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene oxide challenges the sensitivity and spatial resolution of the most advanced analytical techniques. Here we demonstrate mapping of functional groups on a carboxyl-modified graphene oxide (GO-COOH) surface with a spatial resolution of ≈10 nm using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). Furthermore, we extend the capability of TERS by measuring local electronic properties in situ, in addition to the surface topography and chemical composition. Our results reveal that the Fermi level at the GO-COOH surface decreases as the ID/IG ratio increases, correlating the local defect density with the Fermi level at nanometre length-scales. The in situ multi-parameter microscopy demonstrated in this work significantly improves the accuracy of nanoscale surface characterisation, eliminates measurement artefacts, and opens up the possibilities for characterising optoelectronic devices based on 2D materials under operational conditions.

Charge Induced Dynamics of Water in a Graphene-Mica Slit Pore.

Project description:We use atomic force microscopy to in situ investigate the dynamic behavior of confined water at the interface between graphene and mica. The graphene is either uncharged, negatively charged, or positively charged. At high humidity, a third water layer will intercalate between graphene and mica. When graphene is negatively charged, the interface fills faster with a complete three layer water film, compared to uncharged graphene. As charged positively, the third water layer dewets the interface, either by evaporation into the ambient or by the formation of three-dimensional droplets under the graphene, on top of the bilayer. Our experimental findings reveal novel phenomena of water at the nanoscale, which are interesting from a fundamental point of view and demonstrate the direct control over the wetting properties of the graphene/water interface.

Nanoscale Charge Accumulation and Its Effect on Carrier Dynamics in Tri-cation Perovskite Structures.

Project description:Nanoscale investigations by scanning probe microscopy have provided major contributions to the rapid development of organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHP) as optoelectronic devices. Further improvement of device level properties requires a deeper understanding of the performance-limiting mechanisms such as ion migration, phase segregation, and their effects on charge extraction both at the nano- and macroscale. Here, we have studied the dynamic electrical response of Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95PbI3-xBrx perovskite structures by employing conventional and microsecond time-resolved open-loop Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Our results indicate strong negative charge carrier trapping upon illumination and very slow (>1 s) relaxation of charges at the grain boundaries. The fast electronic recombination and transport dynamics on the microsecond scale probed by time-resolved open-loop KPFM show diffusion of charge carriers toward grain boundaries and indicate locally higher recombination rates because of intrinsic compositional heterogeneity. The nanoscale electrostatic effects revealed are summarized in a collective model for mixed-halide CsFAMA. Results on multilayer solar cell structures draw direct relations between nanoscale ionic transport, charge accumulation, recombination properties, and the final device performance. Our findings extend the current understanding of complex charge carrier dynamics in stable multication OIHP structures.
