BN-Embedded Perylenes.

ABSTRACT: Transition metal catalyzed coupling reaction strategy has been utilized in the synthesis of two novel BN-perylenes starting from halogenated BN-naphthalene derivatives. The molecular structures and packing modes of BN-perylenes were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction experiments. Their photophysical properties were further investigated using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Interestingly, the isosteric BN-insertion in perylene system resulted in stronger π-π stacking interaction both in solid and solution phases. The synthesized BN-perylenes are proved to be highly stable and thus provide a new valuable platform for novel organic materials applications which is otherwise inaccessible to date.

Precise synthesis of BN embedded perylene diimide oligomers for fast-charging and long-life potassium-organic batteries.

Project description:Replacing the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond with an isoelectronic BN unit is an effective strategy to tune the optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, precise control of the BN orientations in large PAH systems is still a synthetic challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a facile approach for the synthesis of BN embedded perylene diimide (PDI) nanoribbons, and the polarization orientations of the BN unit were precisely regulated in the two PDI trimers. These BN doped PDI oligomers show great potential as organic cathodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). In particular, trans-PTCDI3BN exhibits great improvement in voltage potential, reversible capacities (ca. 130 mA h g-1), superior rate performance (19 s to 69% of the maximum capacity) and ultralong cyclic stability (nearly no capacity decay over 30 000 cycles), which are among those of state-of-the-art organic-based cathodes. Our synthetic approach stands as an effective way to access large PAHs with precisely controlled BN orientations, and the BN doping strategy provides useful insight into the development of organic electrode materials for secondary batteries.

Orbital Mapping of Semiconducting Perylenes on Cu(111).

Project description:Semiconducting O-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons constitute a class of molecules whose optoelectronic properties can be tailored by acting on the π-extension of the carbon-based frameworks and on the oxygen linkages. Although much is known about their photophysical and electrochemical properties in solution, their self-assembly interfacial behavior on solid substrates has remained unexplored so far. In this paper, we have focused our attention on the on-surface self-assembly of O-doped bi-perylene derivatives. Their ability to assemble in ordered networks on Cu(111) single-crystalline surfaces allowed a combination of structural, morphological, and spectroscopic studies. In particular, the exploitation of the orbital mapping methodology based on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, with the support of scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction, allowed the identification of both the electronic structure of the adsorbates and their geometric arrangement. Our multi-technique experimental investigation includes the structure determination from powder X-ray diffraction data for a specific compound and demonstrates that the electronic structure of such large molecular self-assembled networks can be studied using the reconstruction methods of molecular orbitals from photoemission data even in the presence of segregated chiral domains.

Interaction of human serum albumin with novel 3,9-disubstituted perylenes.

Project description:Human serum albumin (HSA) has been used as a model for the binding of a number of different ligands, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons, to proteins. In this case we have investigated the interaction of HSA with a novel set of perylene derivatives. Di-substituted perylene analogues have been synthesized as potentially useful organic photovoltaic materials. Their photophysical properties may make them viable for fuel cell applications too. However, these molecules are poorly soluble especially in aqueous solvents. Binding to water-soluble proteins may provide a way to solubilize them. At the same time one can study whether the photophysical processes initiated by the irradiation of a perylene ligand can cause conformational changes to the host protein. With the present study we demonstrated that of the three perylene derivatives investigated only one, the dimethoxy analogue, has a significant affinity for HSA at a binding site near the bottom of the central cleft (in proximity of the Trp214 residue). The small affinity prevents any significant photoinduced changes to occur in the protein.

A theoretical study of single-atom catalysis of CO oxidation using Au embedded 2D h-BN monolayer: a CO-promoted O₂ activation.

Project description:The CO oxidation behaviors on single Au atom embedded in two-dimensional h-BN monolayer are investigated on the basis of first-principles calculations, quantum Born-Oppenheim molecular dynamic simulations (BOMD) and micro-kinetic analysis. We show that CO oxidation on h-BN monolayer support single gold atom prefers an unreported tri-molecular Eley-Rideal (E-R) reaction, where O2 molecule is activated by two pre-adsorbed CO molecules. The formed OCOAuOCO intermediate dissociates into two CO2 molecules synchronously, which is the rate-limiting step with an energy barrier of 0.47 eV. By using the micro-kinetic analysis, the CO oxidation following the tri-molecular E-R reaction pathway entails much higher reaction rate (1.43 × 10(5) s(-1)) than that of bimolecular Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) pathway (4.29 s(-1)). Further, the quantum BOMD simulation at the temperature of 300 K demonstrates the complete reaction process in real time.

Domino Dehydrative π-Extension: A Facile Path to Extended Perylenes and Terrylenes.

Project description:Herein, we report a new method for synthesis of extended perylenes and terrylenes. The technique is based on the cascade dehydrative π-extensions (DPEX) of aryl aldehydes, in which stepwise annulations activate previously "dormant" substituents. Two- and fourfold cyclizations of 3-aryl-biphenyl-2,2'-dicarbaldehydes offer a rapid path to unsymmetrical perylenes and elusive terrylene derivatives, respectively. DPEX of 3,3''-(phenanthrene-1,8-diyl)bis (([1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2'-dicarbaldehyde)) leads to the biradical structure, which proceeds in situ into oxidative electrocyclization at room temperature. The described domino process complements and expands DPEX approach to a large family of fused acenes and related PAHs.

Reactions of HDDA-Derived Benzynes with Perylenes: Rapid Construction of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds.

Project description:Benzynes produced by the thermal cycloisomerization of tetrayne substrates [i.e., by the hexadehydro-Diels-Alder (HDDA) reaction] react with perylenes to produce novel naphthoperylene derivatives. Cyclic voltammetry and absorption and emission properties of these compounds are described. DFT studies shed additional light on the dearomatization that accompanies the reaction as well as some of the spectroscopic behavior.

Hall sensors batch-fabricated on all-CVD h-BN/graphene/h-BN heterostructures.

Project description:The two-dimensional (2D) material graphene is highly promising for Hall sensors due to its potential of having high charge carrier mobility and low carrier concentration at room temperature. Here, we report the scalable batch-fabrication of magnetic Hall sensors on graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using commercially available large area CVD grown materials. The all-CVD grown h-BN/graphene/h-BN van der Waals heterostructures were prepared by layer transfer technique and Hall sensors were batch-fabricated with 1D edge metal contacts. The current-related Hall sensitivities up to 97 V/AT are measured at room temperature. The Hall sensors showed robust performance over the wafer scale with stable characteristics over six months in ambient environment. This work opens avenues for further development of growth and fabrication technologies of all-CVD 2D material heterostructures and allows further improvements in Hall sensor performance for practical applications.

(Fuzzy) Ideals of BN-Algebras.

Project description:The notions of an ideal and a fuzzy ideal in BN-algebras are introduced. The properties and characterizations of them are investigated. The concepts of normal ideals and normal congruences of a BN-algebra are also studied, the properties of them are displayed, and a one-to-one correspondence between them is presented. Conditions for a fuzzy set to be a fuzzy ideal are given. The relationships between ideals and fuzzy ideals of a BN-algebra are established. The homomorphic properties of fuzzy ideals of a BN-algebra are provided. Finally, characterizations of Noetherian BN-algebras and Artinian BN-algebras via fuzzy ideals are obtained.

Thermal Conductance of the 2D MoS<sub>2</sub>/h-BN and graphene/h-BN Interfaces.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their corresponding van der Waals heterostructures have drawn tremendous interest due to their extraordinary electrical and optoelectronic properties. Insulating 2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with an atomically smooth surface has been widely used as a passivation layer to improve carrier transport for other 2D materials, especially for Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDCs). However, heat flow at the interface between TMDCs and h-BN, which will play an important role in thermal management of various electronic and optoelectronic devices, is not yet understood. In this paper, for the first time, the interface thermal conductance (G) at the MoS2/h-BN interface is measured by Raman spectroscopy, and the room-temperature value is (17.0 ± 0.4) MW · m-2K-1. For comparison, G between graphene and h-BN is also measured, with a value of (52.2 ± 2.1) MW · m-2K-1. Non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) calculations, from which the phonon transmission spectrum can be obtained, show that the lower G at the MoS2/h-BN interface is due to the weaker cross-plane transmission of phonon modes compared to graphene/h-BN. This study demonstrates that the MoS2/h-BN interface limits cross-plane heat dissipation, and thereby could impact the design and applications of 2D devices while considering critical thermal management.

Vibrational Properties of h-BN and h-BN-Graphene Heterostructures Probed by Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy.

Project description:Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy is a powerful technique for investigating lattice dynamics of nanoscale systems including graphene and small molecules, but establishing a stable tunnel junction is considered as a major hurdle in expanding the scope of tunneling experiments. Hexagonal boron nitride is a pivotal component in two-dimensional Van der Waals heterostructures as a high-quality insulating material due to its large energy gap and chemical-mechanical stability. Here we present planar graphene/h-BN-heterostructure tunneling devices utilizing thin h-BN as a tunneling insulator. With much improved h-BN-tunneling-junction stability, we are able to probe all possible phonon modes of h-BN and graphite/graphene at Γ and K high symmetry points by inelastic tunneling spectroscopy. Additionally, we observe that low-frequency out-of-plane vibrations of h-BN and graphene lattices are significantly modified at heterostructure interfaces. Equipped with an external back gate, we can also detect high-order coupling phenomena between phonons and plasmons, demonstrating that h-BN-based tunneling device is a wonderful playground for investigating electron-phonon couplings in low-dimensional systems.
