Synthesis, Properties, and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Poly(lactic acid)-co-Poly(propylene adipate) Block Copolymers Prepared by Reactive Extrusion.

ABSTRACT: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biobased polyester with ever-growing applications in the fields of packaging and medicine. Despite its popularity, it suffers from inherent brittleness, a very slow degradation rate and a high production cost. To tune the properties of PLA, block copolymers with poly(propylene adipate) (PPAd) prepolymer were prepared by polymerizing L-lactide and PPAd oligomers via reactive extrusion (REX) in a torque rheometer. The effect of reaction temperature and composition on the molecular weight, chemical structure, and physicochemical properties of the copolymers was studied. The introduction of PPAd successfully increased the elongation and the biodegradation rate of PLA. REX is an efficient and economical alternative method for the fast and continuous synthesis of PLA-based copolymers with tunable properties.

Partially Bio-Based and Biodegradable Poly(Propylene Terephthalate-Co-Adipate) Copolymers: Synthesis, Thermal Properties, and Enzymatic Degradation Behavior.

Project description:A series of partially bio-based and biodegradable poly(propylene terephthalate-co-adipate) (PPTA) random copolymers with different components were prepared by the melt polycondensation of petro-based adipic acid and terephthalic acid with bio-based 1,3-propanediol. The microstructure, crystallization behavior, thermal properties, and enzymatic degradation properties were further investigated. The thermal decomposition kinetics was deeply analyzed using Friedman's method, with the thermal degradation activation energy ranging from 297.8 to 302.1 kJ/mol. The crystallinity and wettability of the copolymers decreased with the increase in the content of the third unit, but they were lower than those of the homopolymer. The thermal degradation activation energy E, carbon residue, and reaction level n all showed a decreasing trend. Meanwhile, the initial thermal decomposition temperature (Td) was higher than 350 °C, which can meet the requirements for processing and use. The PPTA copolymer material still showed excellent thermal stability. Adding PA units could regulate the crystallinity, wettability, and degradation rate of PPTA copolymers. The composition of PPTA copolymers in different degradation cycles was characterized by 1H NMR analysis. Further, the copolymers' surface morphology during the process of enzymatic degradation also was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The copolymers' enzymatic degradation accorded with the surface degradation mechanism. The copolymers showed significant degradation behavior within 30 days, and the rate increased with increasing PA content when the PA content exceeded 45.36%.

New Biodegradable Poly(l-lactide)-Block-Poly(propylene adipate) Copolymer Microparticles for Long-Acting Injectables of Naltrexone Drug.

Project description:In the present study, novel block copolymers of poly(l-lactide)-block-poly(propylene adipate) (PLLA-b-PPAd) were synthesized in two ratios, 90/10 and 75/25 w/w and were further investigated as long-acting injectable (LAI) polymeric matrices in naltrexone base microparticle formulations. The synthesized polymers were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FTIR, XRD, TGA and DSC. NMR and FTIR spectroscopies confirmed the successful synthesis of copolymers while DSC showed that these are block copolymers with well-defined and separated blocks. Microparticles were prepared by single emulsification method and were further characterized. Nanoparticles in the range of 0.4-4.5 ?m were prepared as indicated by SEM, with copolymers giving the lowest particle size. By XRD and DSC it was found that naltrexone was present in the amorphous state in its microparticles. Dissolution study showed a drug release extending over seven days, indicating that these novel PLLA-b-PPAd copolymers could be promising matrices for naltrexone's LAI formulations. It was evidenced that drug release depended on the copolymer composition. Model release studies showed that drug release is controlled by diffusion.

Process-Induced Morphology of Poly(Butylene Adipate Terephthalate)/Poly(Lactic Acid) Blown Extrusion Films Modified with Chain-Extending Cross-Linkers.

Project description:Process-induced changes in the morphology of biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA) blends modified with various multifunctional chain-extending cross-linkers (CECLs) are presented. The morphology of unmodified and modified films produced with blown film extrusion is examined in an extrusion direction (ED) and a transverse direction (TD). While FTIR analysis showed only small peak shifts indicating that the CECLs modify the molecular weight of the PBAT/PLA blend, SEM investigations of the fracture surfaces of blown extrusion films revealed their significant effect on the morphology formed during the processing. Due to the combined shear and elongation deformation during blown film extrusion, rather spherical PLA islands were partly transformed into long fibrils, which tended to decay to chains of elliptical islands if cooled slowly. The CECL introduction into the blend changed the thickness of the PLA fibrils, modified the interface adhesion, and altered the deformation behavior of the PBAT matrix from brittle to ductile. The results proved that CECLs react selectively with PBAT, PLA, and their interface. Furthermore, the reactions of CECLs with PBAT/PLA induced by the processing depended on the deformation directions (ED and TD), thus resulting in further non-uniformities of blown extrusion films.

Development of Toughened Flax Fiber Reinforced Composites. Modification of Poly(lactic acid)/Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) Blends by Reactive Extrusion Process.

Project description:The presented study focuses on the development of flax fiber (FF) reinforced composites prepared with the use of poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)-PLA/PBAT blend system. This type of modification was aimed to increase impact properties of PLA-based composites, which are usually characterized by high brittleness. The PLA/PBAT blends preparation was carried out using melt blending technique, while part of the samples was prepared by reactive extrusion process with the addition of chain extender (CE) in the form of epoxy-functionalized oligomer. The properties of unreinforced blends was evaluated using injection molded samples. The composite samples were prepared by compression molding technique, while flax fibers reinforcement was in the form of plain fabric. The properties of the laminated sheets were investigated during mechanical test measurements (tensile, flexural, impact). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was used to determine the thermal properties, while dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and heat deflection temperature (HDT) measurements were conducted in order to measure the thermomechanical properties. Research procedure was supplemented with structure evaluation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The comparative study reveals that the properties of PLA/PBAT-based composites were more favorable, especially in the context of impact resistance improvement. However, for CE modified samples also the modulus and strength was improved. Structural observations after the impact tests confirmed the presence of the plastic deformation of PLA/PBAT matrix, which confirmed the favorable properties of the developed materials. The use of PBAT phase as the impact modifier strongly reduced the PLA brittleness, while the reactive extrusion process improves the fiber-matrix interactions leading to higher stiffness and strength.

Synthesis of Di-Block Copolymers Poly (propylene ox-ide)-block-Poly (9-(2,3-epoxypropyl) Carbazole) via Sequential Addition of Monomers in One Pot.

Project description:Polypropylene oxide (PPO) and poly(9-(2,3-epoxypropyl) carbazole) (PEPK) di-block copolymers are prepared in one pot via sequential monomer addition by using i-PrONa/i-Bu3Al as an anionic catalytic system. An almost 100% monomer conversion is obtained, and the length of each block is controlled through the monomer/catalyst ratio used. Copolymer molecular weights are quite close to theoretical values calculated assuming the formation of one polymer chain per catalyst; therefore, it is hypothesized that the polymerization reaction proceeds with a living character. The synthesis appears to be particularly efficient and versatile. The calorimetric properties of copolymers obtained in this work are remarkable, since they show two distinct Tg values, corresponding to the PPO and PEPK blocks. The optical measurements of di-block copolymers show more analogous features than those of PEPK homopolymer. Copolymer solution emission spectra just exhibit isolated carbazole fluorescence, whereas in the solid state, film spectra show excimer fluorescence.

Influence of the Headgroup on the Interaction of Poly(ethylene oxide)-Poly(propylene oxide) Block Copolymers with Lipid Bilayers.

Project description:The lipid headgroup plays an important role in the association of polymers with lipid bilayer membranes. Herein, we report how a glycerol headgroup versus a choline headgroup affects the interaction of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide) (PEO-PPO) block copolymers with lipid bilayer vesicles. Unilamellar vesicles composed of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol at various molar ratios were used as model membranes. The interactions between the block copolymers and lipid bilayers were quantified by pulsed-field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) based on the distinctly different mobilities of free and bound polymers. All the investigated polymer species showed significantly higher binding with 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1'-rac-glycerol) sodium salt (POPG) liposomes than with 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) liposomes, indicating stronger association with the glycerol headgroup compared to the choline headgroup. This effect did not become significant until the composition of mixed POPC/POPG liposomes contained more than 20 mol % POPG. A plausible explanation for the enhanced polymer binding with POPG invokes the role of hydrogen bonding between the glycerol headgroup and the ether moieties of the polymers.

On the Selective Enzymatic Recycling of Poly(pentamethylene 2,5-furanoate)/Poly(lactic acid) Blends and Multiblock Copolymers.

Project description:Among novel renewable furanoate-based polyesters, poly(pentamethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PPeF) shows outstanding gas barrier properties and high flexibility. PPeF blending/copolymerization with another well-known bio-based polymer, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), leads to considerably better mechanical and gas barrier properties of the latter, making it suitable for flexible food packaging applications. In this work, enzymatic depolymerization of PLA/PPeF blends with different compositions (1, 3, 5, 20, 30, and 50 wt % PPeF) and a PLA-PPeF block copolymer (50 wt % PPeF) by cutinase 1 from Thermobifida cellulositilytica (Thc_Cut1) was investigated as a possible recycling strategy. Based on quantification of weight loss and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of released molecules, faster hydrolysis was seen for PLA/PPeF blends with increasing PPeF content when compared to neat PLA, while the block copolymer (P(LA50PeF50)) was significantly less susceptible to hydrolysis. Surface morphology analysis (via scanning electron microscopy), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and NMR analysis confirmed preferential hydrolysis of the PPeF component. Through crystallization, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid was selectively recovered from the depolymerized films and used for the resynthesis of the PPeF homopolymer, demonstrating the potential of enzymes for novel recycling concepts. The possibility of selective recovery of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid from the completely depolymerized films with a 75% yield could bring further evidence of the high value of these materials, both in the form of blends and copolymers, for a sustainable whole packaging life cycle, where PPeF is potentially enzymatically recycled and PLA is mechanically recycled.

Effect of Different Compatibilizers on the Properties of Poly (Lactic Acid)/Poly (Butylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate) Blends Prepared under Intense Shear Flow Field.

Project description:In this report, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) with three kinds of compatibilizers were melt blended under intensive shear flow. A self-made parallel three-screw extruder was developed to generate such flow during the process. Mechanical properties, chemical reactions among PLA, PBAT and compatibilizers, rheological behavior and morphology were investigated. The mechanical tests showed that the notched impact strength of super-tough composite with 10 wt% EGMA is about 20 times than that of pure PLA. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) results showed that the epoxy functional groups or maleic anhydride functional groups of KT-20, KT-915 and EGMA reacted with the hydroxyl groups of PLA or PBAT macromolecules, resulting in a bridge of PLA and PBAT. About rheological properties, the tan ?-angular frequency curves and the ?''- ?' curves confirmed the chemical reactions mentioned above and indicated better compatibility of ?''- ?' between PLA and PBAT, respectively. Meanwhile, the loss modulus and storage modulus-angular frequency curves demonstrated the discrepancy of different compatibilizer components. In particular, from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, it can be seen that the phase size and dispersion uniformity of PBAT adjusted by compatibilizer, corresponding to better compatibility that is described in the ?''- ?' curves. The approach for producing super-tough PLA/PBAT/compatibilizer by intensive shear flow provides a viable direction for further improving PLA performance.

Poly(Lactic Acid) Block Copolymers with Poly(Hexylene Succinate) as Microparticles for Long-Acting Injectables of Risperidone Drug.

Project description:In the present work, Risperidone microparticles from poly(lactic acid)/poly(hexylene succinate) (PLA-b-PHSu) block copolymers in different ratios, 95/05, 90/10 and 80/20 w/w, were examined as long-acting injectable formulations. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to verify the successful synthesis of copolymers. Enzymatic hydrolysis showed an increase in weight loss as the content of PHSu increased, while the cytotoxicity studies confirmed the biocompatibility of the copolymers. The polyesters were further used to encapsulate Risperidone by spray drying. The drug-loaded microparticles were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). SEM microphotographs confirmed that spherically shaped microparticles were prepared with sizes about 5-12 μm, while XRD and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies evidenced that Risperidone was encapsulated in amorphous form. The drug loading and the entrapment efficiency of Risperidone were studied as well as the in vitro release from the prepared microparticles. As the content of PHSu increased, a higher release of Risperidone was observed, with PLA-b-PHSu 80/20 w/w succeeding to release 100% of RIS within 12 days. According to theoretical modeling, the kinetics of RIS release from PLA-b-PHSu microparticles is complex, governed by both diffusion and polymer erosion.

Alternating styrene-propylene and styrene-ethylene copolymers prepared by photocatalytic decarboxylation.

Project description:Synthesis of olefin-styrene copolymers with defined architecture is challenging due to the limitations associated with the inherent reactivity ratios for these monomers in radical or metal-catalyzed polymerizations. Herein, we developed a straightforward approach to alternating styrene-propylene and styrene-ethylene copolymers by combining radical polymerizations and powerful post-polymerization modification reactions. We employed reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization between styrene derivatives and saccharin (meth)acrylamide to generate alternating copolymers. Once polymerized, the amide bond of the saccharin monomers was highly reactive toward hydrolysis, an observation exploited to obtain alternating styrene-acrylic acid/methacrylic acid copolymers. Subsequent mild decarboxylation of the (meth)acrylic acid groups in the presence of a photocatalyst and a hydrogen source under visible light resulted in the styrene-alt-ethylene/propylene copolymers. Alternating copolymers comprised of either propylene or ethylene units alternating with functional styrene derivatives were also prepared, illustrating the compatibility of this approach for functional polymer synthesis. Finally, the thermal properties of the alternating copolymers were compared to those from statistical copolymer analogs to elucidate the effect of microarchitecture and styrene substituents on the glass transition temperature.
