Project description:Aim: Due to the political demand for the integration of interprofessional (IP) learning into the undergraduate education of health professionals, teachers now have to create and perform IP courses. The IP and thus heterogeneous learning groups pose a special challenge. The presented project aimed at designing a workshop training to support teachers to reflect on heterogeneous learning cultures and to prepare for IP teaching. Methods: The workshop concept was developed in using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and included planning, several rounds of testing and the evaluation of the concept. All planning steps in the development of the workshop concept followed the principles of cooperative learning. The concept evolved in an iterative process based on participants' feedback and facilitators' self-reflection. Results: The resulting workshop concept includes theoretical input as well as discussion, teamwork and participants' self-reflection. The workshop's core element is the work assignment to develop an IP teaching session considering different learning cultures. Work results and experiences are discussed with the entire group and required skills of IP teachers are identified. Conclusion: The subjective feedback of participants regarding their satisfaction and knowledge gained indicates that the workshop concept is well received. The joint planning of an IP teaching session highlights particularities resulting from heterogeneous learning cultures. These should be utilized in IP education to better prepare learners for IP cooperation in the workplace.

Project description:Interprofessional education (IPE) is based on the concept that health professional students are best trained on the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that promote population health when they learn with and about others from diverse health science fields. Previously, IPE has focused almost exclusively on the clinical context. This study piloted and evaluated an IPE learning experience that emphasizes population health in a sample of public health undergraduate students. We hypothesized that students who completed the 2-hour online asynchronous module would better understand the value of public health's role in interprofessional teams, the benefit of interprofessional teamwork in improving health outcomes, and the value of collaborative learning with other interprofessional students. Students engaged in pre- and post-training assessments and individual reflections throughout the module. Sixty-seven undergraduate public health students completed the module and assessments. After completion, a greater proportion strongly agreed that students from different health science disciplines should be educated in the same setting to form collaborative relationships with one another (19 vs. 39% before and after completion, respectively). A greater proportion also strongly agreed that care delivered by an interprofessional team would benefit the health outcomes of a patient/client after the training (60 vs. 75% before and after, respectively). Mean scores describing how strongly students agreed with the above two statements significantly increased post-training. A greater proportion of students strongly agreed that incorporating the public health discipline as part of an interprofessional team is crucial to address the social determinants of health for individual health outcomes after taking the training (40 vs. 55% before and after, respectively). There was little change in attitudes about the importance of incorporating public health as part of an interprofessional team to address social determinants of health for population health outcomes, which were strongly positive before the training. Most students reported being satisfied with the module presentation and felt their understanding of interprofessional practice improved. This training may be useful for students from all health disciplines to recognize the benefits of engaging with and learning from public health students and to recognize the important role of public health in interprofessional practices.

Project description:IntroductionVaccines are the basis of health of our communities since they prevent severe infectious diseases. However vaccination rates continue to decrease due to the spread of misinformation about their side effects, which enhances vaccine hesitancy and puts at risk public health. Introducing vaccines from the One Health approach can help to develop an integral understanding of their role and to apply critical ignorance as part of criticality to avoid vaccine hesitancy and raise trust in science. This paper presents a design on vaccination for secondary-education teacher training developed toward this goal.MethodsThe design presented in this paper draws from previous studies on critical thinking, on vaccine rejection, and the One Health approach on other health issues in Secondary Education. The focus of this design is engaging secondary-education pre-service teachers in the practice of critical ignorance and criticality to assess diverse pieces of information on vaccination from the One Health approach.ResultsThis study discusses the design principles and the activities of an original design that aims to provide Secondary Education teachers with some tools to introduce critical ignorance and criticality for addressing misinformation on vaccines by using the One Health approach.DiscussionIf secondary science teachers are going to successfully confront misinformation on vaccination in their science instruction, we need to develop and test designs and approaches that prepare them for this purpose. Critical ignorance plays a central role in managing misinformation; thus, such instruction should engage future teachers in critical evaluation of information on vaccination, as well as in the application of the One Health approach to take responsible actions.

Project description:Background Interprofessional Education is considered a necessary approach to develop skills for collaborative work in the training of professionals in order to improve the quality of health care. The curricula are the guiding documents for training and should explain how Interprofessional Education is adopted in undergraduate health courses. Objective To analyze curricula of undergraduate health courses, from the perspective of Interprofessional Education, in a Brazilian public university. Design Qualitative study of document analysis. Settings Undergraduate health courses at a Brazilian public university. Methods 13 undergraduate health courses were analyzed. Data collection was conducted based on an adapted quality assessment script for Interprofessional Education. From the thematic content analysis, three analytical categories emerged. Results In the category “Curriculum organization and interprofessionality”, the courses do not make free periods available in the curriculum, and each of the courses provide space for elective subjects at different times. In the category “Training guided by social reality and health needs” the courses propose training based on the health needs of patients from the Brazilian public health system. In the category “Learning for interprofessional action”, the term “multiprofessional” characterizes learning for teamwork, with a discrete number of interprofessional disciplines. Conclusions The theoretical bases of IPE and organizational goals are necessary to establish training objectives, specific shared times, and mutual interests that are directed to interprofessionality. Interprofessional Education can be expanded from activities that already exist in the curricula of undergraduate courses. Highlights • Extension activities are important for the expansion of interprofessional education.• Patients need to be included in the interprofessional education planning.• Interprofessionalism should be a goal in health curricula courses.• Interprofessional education needs an alignment between health courses curricula.

Project description:Peer-assisted learning (PAL)-especially peer tutorials-are gaining momentum in health professions education, particularly in interprofessional education. As little is known about the use of peer tutorials or the preparation of tutors in this context in Germany and in other countries, this study aims to provide an overview of these interventions. A cross-sectional study with a descriptive-exploratory design was conducted. German institutions for health professions education were contacted, and individuals with pedagogical responsibilities were invited to participate in an online survey. The survey was informed by two studies in which seven domains were identified as important. These included facts about the institution, the offer of PAL, the use of tutorials, and the design of tutor training. The survey used mostly closed-ended questions. The questionnaire was completed by n = 100 participants. Overall, n = 46 participants indicated that PAL was offered at their institution. Of these 46 participants, 32 (70%) indicated that uniprofessional PAL was offered, 2 (4%) indicated that interprofessional PAL was offered, and 12 (26%) indicated that both forms of PAL were offered. Peer tutoring was the most common format in both cases (73% for uniprofessional and 64% for interprofessional PAL), and mandatory interventions were mostly used to prepare the tutors. These interventions were held by educators or lecturers and were offered mostly face-to-face as workshops or as discussions. Deepening the tutors' social competencies through training was given high relevance. Regarding content, focus was placed on communication, (self-)reflection, and group management. Eighty-eight participants expressed recommendations for future directions in terms of preparing tutors for interprofessional PAL. Minor differences between the use of uniprofessional and interprofessional PAL and tutor training were found. Nevertheless, implementation strategies varied. In future, preparatory measures for tutors should be more uniformly designed and geared to the specific requirements of uniprofessional and interprofessional learning, and that at best on an empirical basis.

Project description:IntroductionOpioid pain management is complex and requires a collaborative approach. To prepare health professions students to care for patients who have chronic pain, we developed an interprofessional education (IPE) session for delivery using a virtual platform that featured a standardized patient (SP) interaction.MethodsThe SP case highlighted a patient on opioids for chronic low back pain resulting from a car accident. Despite no improvement in pain or function, the patient continued taking opioids and developed behaviors that could represent opioid misuse. During the synchronous, online session, interprofessional teams of students interviewed an SP and collaborated to develop a holistic care plan to address the patient's pain and potential opioid misuse. The session evaluation included pre- and postsession surveys.ResultsOver 750 students from medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and social work programs participated in the virtual IPE sessions during a single year. Students rated the session positively. Matched survey responses suggested improved confidence in knowledge and skills, and learning through Zoom was rated favorably.DiscussionWe successfully implemented a synchronous online IPE session involving SP interactions that allowed students to practice team-based care of a patient with chronic pain who was taking opioids. Based on the success of this IPE session, including the success of the online delivery model, future IPE sessions will continue virtually.

Project description:Education programs have been central to reestablishing social norms, rebuilding public educational institutions, and addressing public attitudes toward mental illness in Liberia following a protracted civil war and the Ebola epidemic. The aim of this study was to determine if a program combining an understanding of neuroscience with mental health literacy content could increase teachers' awareness of students' mental health issues and produce changes in teacher attitudes and classroom practices. A tiered Training-of-Trainers approach was employed. The first workshop trained 24 Liberian secondary science teachers in the neurobiology of learning, memory, emotions, stress and adolescent brain development. A Leadership Team formed from eight of the Tier I participants then adapted the curriculum, added in more mental health literacy content and led four Tier II workshops and four follow-up Refresher sessions. Participants completed a neuroscience knowledge test and surveys assessing stigma, general perceptions of people with mental illness, and burnout. A subset of Tier II teachers participated in a structured interview at the Refresher time point. Teachers in both tiers acquired basic neuroscience knowledge. Tier I, but not Tier II teachers significantly improved their surveyed attitudes toward people with mental illness. No changes were found in overall teacher burnout. Despite these survey results, the interviewed Tier II teachers self-reported behavioral changes in how they approached their teaching and students in their classrooms. Interviewees described how they now understood social and emotional challenges students might be experiencing and recognized abnormal behaviors as having a biopsychosocial basis. Teachers reported reduced use of verbal and corporal punishment and increased positive rewards systems, such as social and emotional support for students through building relationships. Refresher discussions concurred with the interviewees. In contrast to previous teacher mental health literacy programs which did not bring about a change in helping behaviors, this pilot program may have been successful in changing teacher knowledge and self-reported behaviors, improving teacher-student relationships and decreasing harsh discipline. The combination of basic neuroscience concepts with training on how to recognize mental health issues and refer students should be investigated further as a strategy to promote teacher mental health literacy.

Project description:IntroductionThe eQuality project at the University of Louisville aims to train future physicians to deliver equitable quality care for all people by creating an integrated educational model utilizing the competencies identified in the AAMC's Implementing Curricular and Institutional Climate Changes to Improve Health Care for Individuals Who Are LGBT, Gender Nonconforming, or Born With DSD. This foundational interprofessional health equity session for early learners addresses knowledge and attitude milestones relating to interprofessional collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice competencies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations.MethodsFirst-year medical students were assigned to interprofessional teams of approximately 10 health sciences students each. Students participated in a 75-minute session utilizing a group case study activity, including a systems lecture exploring social determinants and community resources related to LGBT health. Students collaboratively discussed the case and recorded strategies for optimal patient care. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale and health disparities attitudes and knowledge scales were administered pre-/postsession.ResultsOne hundred fifty-eight first-year medical students participated in the session. Posttest scores reflected an improvement for all disparities knowledge items (p < .001), and an increased interest in working with other health professions students on future projects (p < .001). Changes in attitudes toward systemic and social factors affecting health were also observed. However, content analysis of worksheets revealed that only 36% of teams identified specific action steps for the case scenarios.DiscussionThis session was effective in improving knowledge and attitudes related to LGBT health equity and interprofessional education.

Project description:To enhance audiology and physician assistant (PA) student appreciation for collaboration/team-based care through an interprofessional educational activity focused on hearing assessments.A total of 18 students from Louisiana State University Health-New Orleans's audiology and PA programs participated in an optional interprofessional education learning opportunity, which included a demonstration of hearing assessments. To assess student perspectives regarding interprofessional learning, the students completed pre- and post-surveys.Eighteen students completed a survey, including 5 questions using a Likert scale and 1 open-ended question. Both audiology and PA students demonstrated significant statistical improvement in 2 interprofessional competencies: roles/responsibilities and interprofessional communication. Students also reported increased awareness and knowledge in the skills of the opposite professions as related to hearing assessments.Integrating interprofessional education experiences within an audiology program promotes collaborative practice patterns and supports new educational accreditation standards.https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.5491669.

Project description:IntroductionThe ability to collaborate as a member of interprofessional teams is essential for patient care and a core competency for students in health professions education. We developed a yearlong course, the Interprofessional Clinical Experience (ICE), to introduce first-year medical students to team-based aspects of the health care environment and provide them with a foundation upon which later experiences can grow.MethodsThe course uses experiential learning and critical reflection through reflective writing to orient students to working with care teams. Students receive assessments from faculty and various health care professionals. The course requires students to describe the roles and responsibilities of a variety of health care professionals, utilize effective communication with other health professionals on health care teams, demonstrate the ability to work on an interprofessional team, and examine their own and others' perspectives by engaging in self-directed learning and reflective practice.ResultsAnnual course evaluations revealed that the majority of students agreed or strongly agreed that ICE contributed to their understanding of the health care team's roles and improved their ability to communicate with health care professionals, their understanding of health care systems, and their ability to work on an interprofessional team. The course also provides curricular content for the newly implemented Liaison Committee for Medical Education's accreditation requirement on interprofessional collaborative skills.DiscussionThe first implementation of this resource demonstrated that students met the educational objectives of the ICE and gained a better sense of the health care system and teams.
