Project description:Near-field microscopy discloses a peculiar potential to explore novel quantum state of matter at the nanoscale, providing an intriguing playground to investigate, locally, carrier dynamics or propagation of photoexcited modes as plasmons, phonons, plasmon-polaritons or phonon-polaritons. Here, we exploit a combination of hyperspectral time domain spectroscopy nano-imaging and detectorless scattering near-field optical microscopy, at multiple terahertz frequencies, to explore the rich physics of layered topological insulators as Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te2.2Se0.8, hyperbolic materials with topologically protected surface states. By mapping the near-field scattering signal from a set of thin flakes of Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te2.2Se0.8 of various thicknesses, we shed light on the nature of the collective modes dominating their optical response in the 2-3 THz range. We capture snapshots of the activation of transverse and longitudinal optical phonons and reveal the propagation of sub-diffractional hyperbolic phonon-polariton modes influenced by the Dirac plasmons arising from the topological surface states and of bulk plasmons, prospecting new research directions in plasmonics, tailored nanophotonics, spintronics and quantum technologies.

Project description:Topological insulators are electronic materials with an insulating bulk and conducting surface. However, due to free carriers in the bulk, the properties of the metallic surface are difficult to detect and characterize in most topological insulator materials. Recently, a new topological insulator Bi₁.₅Sb₀.₅Te₁.₇Se₁.₃ (BSTS) was found, showing high bulk resistivities of 1-10 Ω.cm and greater contrast between the bulk and surface resistivities compared to other Bi-based topological insulators. Using Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS), we present complex conductivity of BSTS single crystals, disentangling the surface and bulk contributions. We find that the Drude spectral weight is 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than in other Bi-based topological insulators, and similar to that of Bi₂Se₃ thin films, suggesting a significant contribution of the topological surface states to the conductivity of the BSTS sample. Moreover, an impurity band is present about 30 meV below the Fermi level, and the surface and bulk carrier densities agree with those obtained from transport data. Furthermore, from the surface Drude contribution, we obtain a ~98% transmission through one surface layer--this is consistent with the transmission through single-layer or bilayer graphene, which shares a common Dirac-cone feature in the band structure.

Project description:We investigate an evolution of the surface electronic state of the Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 single crystal, which is one of the most bulk insulating topological insulators, by examining terahertz light emitted from the sample surface upon the illumination of the near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the surface state with a flat band bending can appear in the course of the natural maturation process of the surface state in an ambient air. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the evolution of the surface electronic state can be accelerated, decelerated, or even stopped by controlling environmental conditions to contain different amount of H2O, in particular.

Project description:Bi2Te3-based compounds are exclusive commercial thermoelectric materials around room temperature. For n-type compounds, optimal thermoelectric properties are normally obtained at temperatures higher than room temperature to suppress the bipolar effect through increased carrier concentration. We find that doping with trace amounts of Cd and the addition of excess Bi are effective ways to optimize carrier concentration and achieve enhanced room-temperature thermoelectric performance for the Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 alloy in this work. For the Cd-doped samples, the replacement of Cd with Bi leads to not only a significant decrease in electron concentration but also apparently reduces the total thermal conductivity. The addition of excess Bi in the samples creates a Bi-rich synthetic atmosphere during the synthesis process, leading to increased BiTe antisite defects, decreased electron concentration, and reduced total thermal conductivity. Doping a small amount of Cd or adding excess Bi causes optimal thermoelectric performance of the n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 sample shifts obviously toward low temperatures, and the samples with 0.4 atom % Cd and 0.8 atom % excess Bi achieve maximum zT of ∼0.97 at 448 K and ∼0.88 at 348 K, respectively.

Project description:Topological insulators constitute a fascinating class of quantum materials with nontrivial, gapless states on the surface and insulating bulk states. By revealing the optoelectronic dynamics in the whole range from femto- to microseconds, we demonstrate that the long surface lifetime of Bi2Te2Se nanowires allows us to access the surface states by a pulsed photoconduction scheme and that there is a prevailing bolometric response of the surface states. The interplay of the surface and bulk states dynamics on the different time scales gives rise to a surprising physical property of Bi2Te2Se nanowires: their pulsed photoconductance changes polarity as a function of laser power. Moreover, we show that single Bi2Te2Se nanowires can be used as THz generators for on-chip high-frequency circuits at room temperature. Our results open the avenue for single Bi2Te2Se nanowires as active modules in optoelectronic high-frequency and THz circuits.

Project description:Topological superconductors are an interesting and frontier topic in condensed matter physics. In the superconducting state, an order parameter will be established with the basic or subsidiary symmetry of the crystalline lattice. In doped Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 with a basic threefold symmetry, it was predicted, however, that bulk superconductivity with order parameters of twofold symmetry may exist because of the presence of odd parity. We report the proximity effect-induced superconductivity in the Bi2Te3 thin film on top of the iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. By using the quasiparticle interference technique, we demonstrate clear evidence of twofold symmetry of the superconducting gap. The gap minimum is along one of the main crystalline axes following the so-called ?4y notation. This is also accompanied by the elongated vortex shape mapped out by the density of states within the superconducting gap. Our results provide an easily accessible platform for investigating possible topological superconductivity in Bi2Te3/FeTe0.55Se0.45 heterostructures.

Project description:A state of matter with a multi-component order parameter can give rise to vestigial order. In the vestigial phase, the primary order is only partially melted, leaving a remaining symmetry breaking behind, an effect driven by strong classical or quantum fluctuations. Vestigial states due to primary spin and charge-density-wave order have been discussed in iron-based and cuprate materials. Here we present the observation of a partially melted superconductivity in which pairing fluctuations condense at a separate phase transition and form a nematic state with broken Z3, i.e., three-state Potts-model symmetry. Thermal expansion, specific heat and magnetization measurements of the doped topological insulators NbxBi2Se3 and CuxBi2Se3 reveal that this symmetry breaking occurs at [Formula: see text] above [Formula: see text], along with an onset of superconducting fluctuations. Thus, before Cooper pairs establish long-range coherence at Tc, they fluctuate in a way that breaks the rotational invariance at Tnem and induces a crystalline distortion.

Project description:The interface between magnetic material and superconductors has long been predicted to host unconventional superconductivity, such as spin-triplet pairing and topological nontrivial pairing state, particularly when spin-orbital coupling (SOC) is incorporated. To identify these unconventional pairing states, fabricating homogenous heterostructures that contain such various properties are preferred but often challenging. Here, we synthesized a trilayer-type van der Waals heterostructure of MnTe/Bi2Te3/Fe(Te, Se), which combined s-wave superconductivity, thickness-dependent magnetism, and strong SOC. Via low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we observed robust zero-energy states with notably nontrivial properties and an enhanced superconducting gap size on single unit cell (UC) MnTe surface. In contrast, no zero-energy state was observed on 2-UC MnTe. First-principle calculations further suggest that the 1-UC MnTe has large interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a frustrated AFM state, which could promote noncolinear spin textures. It thus provides a promising platform for exploring topological nontrivial superconductivity.

Project description:Previously we showed that the thermoelectric (TE) performance of bulk n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 can be enhanced by subjecting it to a combined process of chemical or mechanical exfoliation (C/ME) followed by a rapid densification and restacking of the exfoliated layers via the spark-plasma-sintering technique (SPS). Here, we present a systematic micro-Raman study of two-dimensional flakes of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 produced by the C/ME process, as a function of the flake thickness. We found Raman evidence for flakes with: (i) integer number of quintuples which exhibited a strong electron-phonon coupling, and (ii) non-integer number of quintuples, or sub-quintuples which exhibited the forbidden IR active mode due to symmetry lowering. Detailed atomic force microscopy was used to confirm the number of quintuples in all flakes examined in this study. The restacking and densification of these flakes by SPS promoted the formation of charged grain boundaries, which led to the enhanced TE properties via the energy filtering process.

Project description:The resistivity versus temperature (ρ-T) behaviours of liquid n-type Bi2Te3-x Se x (x = 0.3, 0.45 and 0.6) alloys are explored up to 1050 °C. A clear hump is observed on all ρ-T curves of the three studied Bi2Te3-x Se x melts during the heating process, which suggests that a temperature-induced liquid-liquid structural transition takes place in the melts. Based on this information, the solidification behaviours and microstructures of the alloys with different liquid states are investigated. The samples that experienced liquid structural transition show that the nucleation and growth undercooling degrees are conspicuously enlarged and the solidification time is shortened. As a result, the solidified lamellae are refined and homogenized, the prevalence of low-angle grain boundaries between these lamellae is increased, and the Vicker Hardness is enhanced. Atom probe tomography analyses prove that there is no segregation or nanoprecipitation within the grains, but the Te-rich eutectic structure and the evolution of composition near the Te-matrix phase boundary are investigated in a sample that experienced liquid structural transition. Our work implies that the solidification behaviours of Bi2Te3-xSex alloys are strongly related to their parent liquid states, providing an alternative approach to tailor the thermoelectric and mechanical properties even when only a simple solidification process is performed.
