Project description:Geometrical symmetry plays a significant role in implementing robust, symmetry-protected, bound states in the continuum (BICs). However, this benefit is only theoretical in many cases since fabricated samples' unavoidable imperfections may easily break the stringent geometrical requirements. Here we propose an approach by introducing the concept of geometrical-symmetry-free but symmetry-protected BICs, realized using the static-like environment induced by a zero-index metamaterial (ZIM). We find that robust BICs exist and are protected from the disordered distribution of multiple objects inside the ZIM host by its physical symmetries rather than geometrical ones. The geometric-symmetry-free BICs are robust, regardless of the objects' external shapes and material parameters in the ZIM host. We further show theoretically and numerically that the existence of those higher-order BICs depends only on the number of objects. By practically designing a structural ZIM waveguide, the existence of BICs is numerically confirmed, as well as their independence on the presence of geometrical symmetry. Our findings provide a way of realizing higher-order BICs and link their properties to the disorder of photonic systems.

Project description:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have received significant attention for their ability to enhance light-matter interactions across a wide range of systems, including lasers, sensors, and frequency mixers. However, many applications require degenerate or nearly degenerate high-quality factor (Q) modes, such as spontaneous parametric down conversion, non-linear four-wave mixing, and intra-cavity difference frequency mixing for terahertz generation. Previously, degenerate pairs of bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been created by fine-tuning the structure to engineer the degeneracy, yielding BICs that respond unpredictably to structure imperfections and material variations. Instead, using a group theoretic approach, we present a design paradigm based on six-fold rotational symmetry (C6) for creating degenerate pairs of symmetry-protected BICs, whose frequency splitting and Q-factors can be independently and predictably controlled, yielding a complete design phase space. Using a combination of resonator and lattice deformations in silicon metasurfaces, we experimentally demonstrate the ability to tune mode spacing from 2 nm to 110 nm while simultaneously controlling Q-factor. Bound states in the continuum can enhance light-matter interactions across a wide range of optical systems. Here, the authors present a design paradigm for creating pairs of bound states whose optical responses can be predictably controlled.

Project description:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are a type of waves that are perfectly confined in the continuous spectrum of radiating waves without interaction with them. Here, we fabricated, with CMOS-compatible processes on a silicon chip, a wheel-shaped optomechanical microresonator, in which we experimentally observed the BIC in the micromechanical domain. The BIC results from destructive interference between two dissipative mechanical modes of the microresonator under broken azimuthal symmetry. Such BICs can be obtained from devices with large and robust supporting structures with variable sizes, which substantially reduces fabrication difficulty and allows for versatile application environments. Our results open a new way of phonon trapping in micromechanical structures with dissipation channels, and produce long phonon lifetimes that are desired in many mechanical applications such as mechanical oscillators, sensors, and quantum information processors.

Project description:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) represent a new paradigm in photonics due to the full suppression of radiation losses. However, this suppression has also hampered the direct observation of them. By using a double terahertz (THz) near-field technique that allows the local excitation and detection of the THz amplitude, we are able to map for the first time the electromagnetic field amplitude and phase of BICs over extended areas, unveiling the field-symmetry protection that suppresses the far-field radiation. This investigation, done for metasurfaces of dimer scatterers, reveals the in-plane extension and formation of BICs with antisymmetric phases, in agreement with coupled-dipole calculations. By displacing the scatterers, we show experimentally that a mirror symmetry is not a necessary condition for a BIC formation. Only π-rotation symmetry is required, making BICs exceptionally robust to structural changes. This work makes the local field of BICs experimentally accessible, which is crucial for the engineering of cavities with infinite lifetimes.

Project description:Bound states in the continuum are optical modes with extremely high-quality factors and narrow resonances, which exist in the dispersion spectrum of the radiative region above the light line. A unique bound state in the continuum is supported at the edge of truncated photonic crystals, which is a type of a Fabry-Pérot type bound state in the continuum, but has never been observed in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the bound states in the continuum supported at the edge array of silicon (Si) pillars whose diameter is bigger than that of the rest of a Si-pillar two-dimensional photonic crystal. We also show the tunability of the resonance and surface sensitivity of the mode when Si pillars are conformally coated with nanometer-thick aluminium oxide films. The presence of an oxide nanofilm improves the quality factor by over 60 % and shifts the resonance wavelength. Such behavior signifies the substantial potential of the bound states in the continuum on two-dimensional photonic crystals for post-fabrication tuning of the quality factor and surface sensing applications.

Project description:The confinement of waves in open systems represents a fundamental phenomenon extensively explored across various branches of wave physics. Recently, significant attention is directed toward bound states in the continuum (BIC), a class of modes that are trapped but do not decay in an otherwise unbounded continuum. Here, the theoretical investigation and experimental demonstration of the existence of quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBIC) for ultrasonic waves are achieved by leveraging an elastic Fabry-Pérot metasurface resonator. Several intriguing properties of the ultrasound quasi-bound states in the continuum that are robust to parameter scanning are unveiled, and experimental evidence of a remarkable Q-factor of 350 at ≈1 MHz frequency, far exceeding the state-of-the-art using a fully acoustic underwater system is presented. The findings contribute novel insights into the understanding of BIC for acoustic waves, offering a new paradigm for the design of efficient, ultra-high Q-factor ultrasound devices.

Project description:Trapping electromagnetic waves within the radiation continuum holds significant implications in the field of optical science and technology. Photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) present a distinctive approach for achieving this functionality, offering potential applications in laser systems, sensing technologies, and other domains. However, the simultaneous achievement of high Q-factors, flat-band dispersions, and wide-angle responses in photonic BICs has not yet been reported, thereby impeding their practical performance due to laser direction deviation or sample disorder. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the construction of moiré BICs in one-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) slabs, where high-Q resonances in the entire moiré flat band are achieved. Specifically, we numerically validate that the radiation loss of moiré BICs can be eliminated by aligning multiple topological polarization charges with all diffraction channels, enabling the strong suppression of far-field radiation from the entire moiré band. This leads to a slow decay of Q-factors away from moiré BICs in the momentum space. Moreover, it is found that Q-factors of the moiré flat band can still maintain at a high level with structural disorder. In experiments, we fabricate the designed 1D moiré PhC slab and observe both high-Q resonances and a slow decrease of Q-factors for moiré flat-band Bloch modes. Our findings hold promising implications for designing highly efficient optical devices with wide-angle responses and introduce a novel avenue for exploring BICs in moiré superlattices.

Project description:Enhancing light-matter interactions is fundamental to the advancement of nanophotonics and optoelectronics. Yet, light diffraction on dielectric platforms and energy loss on plasmonic metallic systems present an undesirable trade-off between coherent energy exchange and incoherent energy damping. Through judicious structural design, both light confinement and energy loss issues could be potentially and simultaneously addressed by creating bound states in the continuum (BICs) where light is ideally decoupled from the radiative continuum. Herein, the authors present a general framework based on the two-coupled resonances to first conceptualize and then numerically demonstrate a type of quasi-BICs that can be achieved through the interference between two bare resonance modes and is characterized by the considerably narrowed spectral line shape even on lossy metallic nanostructures. The ubiquity of the proposed framework further allows the paradigm to be extended for the realization of plexcitonic quasi-BICs on the same metallic systems. Owing to the topological nature, both plasmonic and plexcitonic quasi-BICs display strong mode robustness against parameters variation, thereby providing an attractive platform to unlock the potential of the coupled plasmon-exciton systems for manipulation of the photophysical properties of condensed phases.

Project description:Quantum mechanics predicts that certain stationary potentials can sustain bound states with an energy buried in the continuous spectrum of scattered states, the so-called bound states in the continuum (BIC). Originally regarded as mathematical curiosities, BIC have found an increasing interest in recent years, particularly in quantum and classical transport of matter and optical waves in mesoscopic and photonic systems where the underlying potential can be judiciously tailored. Most of our knowledge of BIC is so far restricted to static potentials. Here we introduce a new kind of BIC, referred to as Floquet BIC, which corresponds to a normalizable Floquet state of a time-periodic Hamiltonian with a quasienergy embedded into the spectrum of Floquet scattered states. We discuss the appearance of Floquet BIC states in a tight-binding lattice model driven by an ac field in the proximity of the dynamic localization regime.

Project description:Chipscale micro- and nano-optomechanical systems, hinging on the intangible radiation-pressure force, have shown their unique strength in sensing, signal transduction, and exploration of quantum physics with mechanical resonators. Optomechanical crystals, as one of the leading device platforms, enable simultaneous molding of the band structure of optical photons and microwave phonons with strong optomechanical coupling. Here, we demonstrate a new breed of optomechanical crystals in two-dimensional slab-on-substrate structures empowered by mechanical bound states in the continuum (BICs) at 8 GHz. We show symmetry-induced BIC emergence with optomechanical couplings up to g/2π ≈ 2.5 MHz per unit cell, on par with low-dimensional optomechanical crystals. Our work paves the way towards exploration of photon-phonon interaction beyond suspended microcavities, which might lead to new applications of optomechanics from phonon sensing to quantum transduction.
