Covid-19 pandemic and spillover effects in stock markets: A financial network approach.

ABSTRACT: This paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on 51 major stock markets, both emerging and developed. We isolated the countries susceptible to shock transmissions, and evaluated countries with immunity, during the lockdown. Specifically, using dependence dynamics and network analysis on a bivariate basis, we identify volatility and contagion risk among stock markets during the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical findings add to the existing body of literature, given that previous work has not placed emphasis on network topologic metrics when it comes to financial networks, specifically during the COVID-19. The evidence shows instant financial contagion a result of the lockdown and the spread of the novel coronavirus. The methodological framework outlines important information for investors and policymakers on using financial networks to improve portfolio selection, by placing an emphasis on assets according to centrality.

Project description:This article investigates the fractal contagion effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets. The stock market information of the top 32 coronavirus affected economies (as of 31st March 2020) was sampled for ex-ante and ex-post COVID-19 outbreak analysis using the Detrended Moving Cross-Correlation Analysis (DMCA) and Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis (DCCA) techniques. The results confirm a fractal contagion effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets. Furthermore, this fractal contagion effect fizzles out over time (in the middle and long run) for both the stock markets return and volatility. Therefore, this article provides pieces of evidence for the COVID-19 fractal contagion effect on the stock markets.

Project description:Examining stock market interactions between China (mainland China and Hong Kong), Japan, and South Korea, this study employs a framework that includes 239 economic variables to identify the spillover effects among these three countries, and empirically simulates the dynamic time-varying non-linear relationship between the stock markets of different countries. The findings are that in recent decades, China's stock market relied on Hong Kong's as a window to the exchange of price information with Japan and South Korea. More recently, the China stock market's spillover effect on East Asia has expanded. The spread of the crisis has strengthened co-movement between the stock markets of China, Japan, and South Korea.

Stock market response to COVID-19 pandemic: A comparative evidence from two emerging markets.

Project description:This paper presents the first comparative study of emerging stock markets' response to the COVID-19 pandemic with evidence from Ghana and Botswana. Using daily time-series data from March 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, the study estimates parametric, semi-parametric and non-parametric models, and provides evidence to support the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., the total number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths) on the stock market performances of Ghana and Botswana. Interestingly, the study shows that the impact of the pandemic on Ghana's stock market is quantitatively greater than the stock market of Botswana. The study calls for fiscal and monetary policies to help firms on the stock market to survive the shock. Going forward, measures aimed at building a robust stock market to withstand such external shocks are critical.

Do retail traders destabilize financial markets? An investigation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:Existing research suggests that retail trading is associated with volatility in financial markets. To extend the literature, we study the dynamic effects of retail trading on volatility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using marketable retail trades identified from the Boehmer et al. (2021) algorithm and novel empirical methods discussed in Jordá (2005), we document a negative, persistent impact of retail trading on the stability of stock prices that is particularly stronger during the pandemic than during the pre-pandemic period. These results highlight how periods of crises - like the pandemic - affect the destabilizing influence of retail trading. To provide additional evidence, we replicate our empirical exercise during the 2008-09 financial crisis. Consistent with the COVID-19 period, we again find that retail trading leads to more volatility during the financial crisis vis-á-vis the pre-crisis period. These results again support the idea that periods of crises strengthen the link between retail trading and volatility.

Investigating the interconnectedness of carbon, fossil energy, and financial markets: A dynamic spillover index approach.

Project description:Against the background of the global active pursuit of carbon neutrality, this paper uses the DY spillover index method to analyze the spillover network effects between carbon, fossil energy and financial markets. The research results show that the spillover effects between these three markets change over time, with an average spillover index of 25.30%, showing a significant mutual influence. Further analysis found that the EU carbon market plays an important role in spillover effects. Especially under the influence of extreme events, the spillover effects reach their peak. At this time, the degree of mutual influence between markets is as high as 60.01%. In addition, during the COVID-19 epidemic, the spillover effect of the EU carbon market on other markets also reached its maximum, indicating that the epidemic increased the contagion of cross-market risks and caused the carbon market to bear greater risks. The research results of this article have important guiding significance for environmental protection investment and emphasize the importance of formulating differentiated environmental protection policies in different time frames. Facing the dual challenges of global climate change and promoting the goal of carbon neutrality, governments and relevant institutions should pay close attention to changes in spillover effects between markets and timely adjust environmental protection policies to achieve maximum results.

Stock markets' reaction to COVID-19: Cases or fatalities?

Project description:In this paper, we examine the stock markets' response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using daily COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths and stock market returns data from 64 countries over the period January 22, 2020 to April 17, 2020, we find that stock markets responded negatively to the growth in COVID-19 confirmed cases. That is, stock market returns declined as the number of confirmed cases increased. We further find that stock markets reacted more proactively to the growth in number of confirmed cases as compared to the growth in number of deaths. Our analysis also suggests negative market reaction was strong during early days of confirmed cases and then between 40 and 60 days after the initial confirmed cases. Overall, our results suggest that stock markets quickly respond to COVID-19 pandemic and this response varies over time depending on the stage of outbreak.

How have the dependence structures between stock markets and economic factors changed during the COVID-19 pandemic?☆

Project description:This study investigates how the dependence structures between stock markets and economic factors have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic using the dynamic model averaging approach. A series of economic factors such as commodity markets, cryptocurrency, monetary policy, international capital flows, and market uncertainty indices are considered. We find that the importance of economic variables and the sign and size of their coefficients are significantly different from those before the COVID-19 pandemic. The stock markets are most influenced by economic factors during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Stock markets' reaction to Covid-19: Moderating role of national culture.

Project description:Recent literature reports stock markets around the world reacted to the Covid-19 pandemic with negative returns. However, this reaction was not uniform across countries. In this paper, we postulate that the national-level uncertainty avoidance, which determines how sensitive members of a nation are to uncertainty, moderates the stock markets' reaction to the pandemic. Using daily data of Covid-19 confirmed cases and stock market returns from 43 countries, we find robust evidence that the decline in stock market returns in response to one percent increase in growth in confirmed cases is stronger for the countries with higher national-level uncertainty aversion.
