Thermal fluids with high specific heat capacity through reversible Diels-Alder reactions.

ABSTRACT: Thermal fluids are used as heat transfer fluids and thermal energy storage media in many energy technologies ranging from solar thermal heating to battery thermal management. The heat capacity of state-of-the-art thermal fluids remains ∼50% of that of water (which suffers from a limited operation range between 0°C and 100°C), and their viscosities are typically more than one order of magnitude higher than that of water. Our results demonstrate that the heat capacity of the proposed thermochemical fluid is significantly higher than that of state-of-the-art thermal fluids over a broad temperature range and is also higher than that of water between 60°C and 90°C. The viscosity of our liquid is only 3 times higher than that of water, and the operating temperature range is between -90°C and 135°C. Furthermore, a model was developed allowing for novel design of thermochemical thermal fluids in the future with even higher heat capacity.

Unconventional exo selectivity in thermal normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder reactions.

Project description:The Diels-Alder reaction is a useful tool for generating functionalized chiral molecules through the concerted cycloaddition of dienes and dienophiles leading to six-membered rings. Traditionally, the selective predictions of the products rely heavily on consideration of the secondary orbital interactions that stabilize the endo pathway. However, there remain some basic examples defying this notion and produce the exo-isomer as major product. Here we systematically evaluated of the structural features driving exo selectivity in thermal normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder reactions. Substitution at the Cβ position and the size and electronegativity of the electron-withdrawing group of the dienophile are contributing factors. Experimental and computational studies both point toward the steric and electrostatic forces between the substituents in both the diene and the dienophile that increase the likelihood of the exo pathway. For these substrates, the dominance of the endo pathway is reduced by transition state distortions and poor structural alignments of the reacting partners. We also noted the tilt of the dienophile with respect to the diene causing steric strain on the functionalities at the more advanced bond forming carbon-carbon position of the endo transition state. Insights into such factors may benefit synthetic planning and asserting control over this important named reaction.

Electrically-Responsive Reversible Polyketone/MWCNT Network through Diels-Alder Chemistry.

Project description:This study examines the preparation of electrically conductive polymer networks based on furan-functionalised polyketone (PK-Fu) doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reversibly crosslinked with bis-maleimide (B-Ma) via Diels-Alder (DA) cycloaddition. Notably, the incorporation of 5 wt.% of MWCNTs results in an increased modulus of the material, and makes it thermally and electrically conductive. Analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates that MWCNTs, due to their diene/dienophile character, covalently interact with the matrix via DA reaction, leading to effective interfacial adhesion between the components. Raman spectroscopy points to a more effective graphitic ordering of MWCNTs after reaction with PK-Fu and B-Ma. After crosslinking the obtained composite via the DA reaction, the softening point (tan(δ) in dynamic mechanical analysis measurements) increases up to 155 °C, as compared to the value of 130 °C for the PK-Fu crosslinked with B-Ma and that of 140 °C for the PK-Fu/B-Ma/MWCNT nanocomposite before resistive heating (responsible for crosslinking). After grinding the composite, compression moulding (150 °C/40 bar) activates the retro-DA process that disrupts the network, allowing it to be reshaped as a thermoplastic. A subsequent process of annealing via resistive heating demonstrates the possibility of reconnecting the decoupled DA linkages, thus providing the PK networks with the same thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties as the crosslinked pristine systems.

How Ionization Catalyzes Diels-Alder Reactions.

Project description:The catalytic effect of ionization on the Diels-Alder reaction between 1,3-butadiene and acrylaldehyde has been studied using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Removal of an electron from the dienophile, acrylaldehyde, significantly accelerates the Diels-Alder reaction and shifts the reaction mechanism from concerted asynchronous for the neutral Diels-Alder reaction to stepwise for the radical-cation Diels-Alder reaction. Our detailed activation strain and Kohn-Sham molecular orbital analyses reveal how ionization of the dienophile enhances the Diels-Alder reactivity via two mechanisms: (i) by amplifying the asymmetry in the dienophile's occupied π-orbitals to such an extent that the reaction goes from concerted asynchronous to stepwise and thus with substantially less steric (Pauli) repulsion per reaction step; (ii) by enhancing the stabilizing orbital interactions that result from the ability of the singly occupied molecular orbital of the radical-cation dienophile to engage in an additional three-electron bonding interaction with the highest occupied molecular orbital of the diene.

Dual Activation of Aromatic Diels-Alder Reactions.

Project description:The unusually fast Diels-Alder reactions of [5]cyclophanes were analyzed by DFT at the BLYP-D3(BJ)/TZ2P level of theory. The computations were guided by an integrated activation-strain and Kohn-Sham molecular orbital analysis. It is revealed why both [5]metacyclophane and [5]paracyclophane exhibit a significant rate enhancement compared to their planar benzene analogue. The activation strain analyses revealed that the enhanced reactivity originates from 1)?predistortion of the aromatic core resulting in a reduced activation strain of the aromatic diene, and/or 2)?enhanced interaction with the dienophile through a distortion-controlled lowering of the HOMO-LUMO gap within the diene. Both of these physical mechanisms and thus the rate of Diels-Alder cycloaddition can be tuned through different modes of geometrical distortion (meta versus para bridging) and by heteroatom substitution in the aromatic ring. Judicious choice of the bridge and heteroatom in the aromatic core enables effective tuning of the aromatic Diels-Alder reactivity to achieve activation barriers as low as 2?kcal?mol-1 , which is an impressive 35?kcal?mol-1 lower than that of benzene.

Project description:The first intramolecular cycloaddition reactions of cyclopropenone ketals with tethered electron-deficient, electron-rich, and neutral 1-substituted dienes are reported, constituting inverse electron demand, normal, and neutral Diels-Alder reactions, that provide exclusively the exo [4 + 2] cycloaddition products without the intervention of [1 + 2], [3 + 2], or [3 + 4] cycloadducts in reactions whose courses do not depend on the reaction conditions, the diene activating substituent, or the nature of the tethering.

How Lewis Acids Catalyze Diels-Alder Reactions.

Project description:The Lewis acid(LA)-catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction between isoprene and methyl acrylate was investigated quantum chemically using a combined density functional theory and coupled-cluster theory approach. Computed activation energies systematically decrease as the strength of the LA increases along the series I2 <SnCl4 <TiCl4 <ZnCl2 <BF3 <AlCl3 . Emerging from our activation strain and Kohn-Sham molecular orbital bonding analysis was an unprecedented finding, namely that the LAs accelerate the Diels-Alder reaction by a diminished Pauli repulsion between the π-electron systems of the diene and dienophile. Our results oppose the widely accepted view that LAs catalyze the Diels-Alder reaction by enhancing the donor-acceptor [HOMOdiene -LUMOdienophile ] interaction and constitute a novel physical mechanism for this indispensable textbook organic reaction.

High stereoselectivity on low temperature Diels-Alder reactions.

Project description:We have found that some of the usually poor dienophiles (2-cycloenones) can undergo Diels-Alder reaction at -78 degrees C with unusually high stereoselectivity in the presence of niobium pentachloride as a Lewis acid catalyst. A remarkable difference in reaction rates for unsubstituted and alpha- or beta-methyl substituted 2-cycloenones was also observed.

Diels-Alder Reactions During the Biosynthesis of Sorbicillinoids.

Project description:The sorbicillinoids are a class of biologically active and structurally diverse fungal polyketides arising from sorbicillin. Through co-expression of sorA, sorB, sorC, and sorD from Trichoderma reesei QM6a, the biosynthetic pathway to epoxysorbicillinol and dimeric sorbicillinoids, which resemble Diels-Alder-like and Michael-addition-like products, was reconstituted in Aspergillus oryzae NSAR1. Expression and feeding experiments demonstrated the crucial requirement of the flavin-dependent monooxygenase SorD for the formation of dimeric sorbicillinoids, hybrid sorbicillinoids, and epoxysorbicillinol in?vivo. In contrast to prior reports, SorD catalyses neither the oxidation of 2',3'-dihydrosorbicillin to sorbicillin nor the oxidation of sorbicillinol to oxosorbicillinol. This is the first report that both the intermolecular Diels-Alder and Michael dimerization reactions, as well as the epoxidation of sorbicillinol are catalysed in?vivo by SorD.

How Alkali Cations Catalyze Aromatic Diels-Alder Reactions.

Project description:We have quantum chemically studied alkali cation-catalyzed aromatic Diels-Alder reactions between benzene and acetylene forming barrelene using relativistic, dispersion-corrected density functional theory. The alkali cation-catalyzed aromatic Diels-Alder reactions are accelerated by up to 5 orders of magnitude relative to the uncatalyzed reaction and the reaction barrier increases along the series Li+ < Na+ < K+ < Rb+ < Cs+ < none. Our detailed activation strain and molecular-orbital bonding analyses reveal that the alkali cations lower the aromatic Diels-Alder reaction barrier by reducing the Pauli repulsion between the closed-shell filled orbitals of the dienophile and the aromatic diene. We argue that such Pauli mechanism behind Lewis-acid catalysis is a more general phenomenon. Also, our results may be of direct importance for a more complete understanding of the network of competing mechanisms towards the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an astrochemical context.

Radical cation Diels-Alder reactions of arylidene cycloalkanes.

Project description:TiO2 photoelectrochemical and electrochemical radical cation Diels-Alder reactions of arylidene cycloalkanes are described, leading to the construction of spiro ring systems. Although the mechanism remains an open question, arylidene cyclobutanes are found to be much more effective in the reaction than other cycloalkanes. Since the reaction is completed with a substoichiometric amount of electricity, a radical cation chain pathway is likely to be involved.
