Different environmental factors drive tree species diversity along elevation gradients in three climatic zones in Yunnan, southern China.

ABSTRACT: Elevational patterns of tree diversity are well studied worldwide. However, few studies have examined how seedlings respond to elevational gradients and whether their responses vary across climatic zones. In this study, we established three elevational transects in tropical, subtropical and subalpine mountain forests in Yunnan Province, southern China, to examine the responses of tree species and their seedlings to elevational gradients. Within each transect, we calculated species diversity indices and composition of both adult trees and seedlings at different elevations. For both adult trees and seedlings, we found that species diversity decreased with increasing elevation in both tropical and subalpine transects. Species composition showed significant elevational separation within all three transects. Many species had specific elevational preferences, but abundant tree species that occurred at specific elevations tended to have very limited recruitment in the understory. Our results highlight that the major factors that determine elevational distributions of tree species vary across climatic zones. Specifically, we found that the contribution of air temperature to tree species composition increased from tropical to subalpine transects, whereas the contribution of soil moisture decreased across these transects.

Project description:The family Orchidaceae is not only one of the most diverse families of flowering plants, but also one of the most endangered plant taxa. Therefore, understanding how its species richness varies along geographical and environmental gradients is essential for conservation efforts. However, such knowledge is rarely available, especially on a large scale. We used a database extracted from herbarium records to investigate the relationships between orchid species richness and elevation, and to examine how elevational diversity in Yunnan Province, China, might be explained by mid-domain effect (MDE), species-area relationship (SAR), water-energy dynamics (WED), Rapoport's Rule, and climatic variables. This particular location was selected because it is one of the primary centers of distribution for orchids. We recorded 691 species that span 127 genera and account for 88.59% of all confirmed orchid species in Yunnan. Species richness, estimated at 200-m intervals along a slope, was closely correlated with elevation, peaking at 1395 to 1723 m. The elevational pattern of orchid richness was considerably shaped by MDE, SAR, WED, and climate. Among those four predictors, climate was the strongest while MDE was the weakest for predicting the elevational pattern of orchid richness. Species richness showed parabolic responses to mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP), with maximum richness values recorded at 13.7 to 17.7°C for MAT and 1237 to 1414 mm for MAP. Rapoport's Rule also helped to explain the elevational pattern of species richness in Yunnan, but those influences were not entirely uniform across all methods. These results suggested that the elevational pattern of orchid species richness in Yunnan is collectively shaped by several mechanisms related to geometric constraints, size of the land area, and environments. Because of the dominant role of climate in determining orchid richness, our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the potential effects of climate change on orchid diversity, and the development of conservation strategies for orchids.

Project description:Elevation gradients could provide natural experiments to examine geomorphological influences on biota ecology and evolution, however little is known about microbial community structures with soil depths along altitudinal gradients in karst graben basin of Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau. Here, bulk soil in A layer (0 ~ 10 cm) and B layer (10 ~ 20 cm) from two transect Mounts were analyzed by using high-throughput sequencing coupled with physicochemical analysis. It was found that the top five phyla in A layer were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Verrucomicrobia, and the top five phyla in B layer were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Chloroflexi in a near-neutral environment. Edaphic parameters were different in two layers along altitudinal gradients. Besides that, soil microbial community compositions varied along altitudinal gradient, and soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) increased monotonically with increasing elevation. It was further observed that Shannon indexes with increasing altitudes in two transect Mounts decreased monotonically with significant difference (p = 0.001), however beta diversity followed U-trend with significant difference (p = 0.001). The low proportions of unique operational taxonomic units (OTUs) appeared at high altitude areas which impact the widely accepted elevation Rapoport's rules. The dominant Bradyrhizobium (alphaproteobacterial OTU 1) identified at high altitudes in two layers constitutes the important group of free-living diazotrophs and could bring fixed N into soils, which simultaneously enhances SOC and TN accumulation at high altitudes (p < 0.01). Due to different responses of bacterial community to environmental changes varying with soil depths, altitudinal gradients exerted negative effects on soil bacterial communities via soil physical properties and positive effects on soil bacterial diversities via soil chemical properties in A layer, however the results in B layer were opposite. Overall, our study is the first attempt to bring a deeper understanding of soil microbial structure patterns along altitudinal gradients at karst graben basin areas.

Project description:Natural ecosystems are under pressure from increasing abiotic and biotic stressors, including climate change and novel pathogens, which are putting species at risk of local extinction, and altering community structure, composition and function. Here, we aim to assess adaptive variation in growth and fungal disease resistance within a foundation tree, Corymbia calophylla to determine local adaptation, trait heritability and genetic constraints in adapting to future environments. Two experimental planting sites were established in regions of contrasting rainfall with seed families from 18 populations capturing a wide range of climate origins (~4,000 individuals at each site). Every individual was measured in 2015 and 2016 for growth (height, basal diameter) and disease resistance to a recently introduced leaf blight pathogen (Quambalaria pitereka). Narrow-sense heritability was estimated along with trait covariation. Trait variation was regressed against climate-of-origin, and multivariate models were used to develop predictive maps of growth and disease resistance. Growth and blight resistance traits differed significantly among populations, and these differences were consistent between experimental sites and sampling years. Growth and blight resistance were heritable, and comparisons between trait differentiation (Q ST) and genetic differentiation (F ST) revealed that population differences in height and blight resistance traits are due to divergent natural selection. Traits were significantly correlated with climate-of-origin, with cool and wet populations showing the highest levels of growth and blight resistance. These results provide evidence that plants have adaptive growth strategies and pathogen defence strategies. Indeed, the presence of standing genetic variation and trait heritability of growth and blight resistance provide capacity to respond to novel, external pressures. The integration of genetic variation into adaptive management strategies, such as assisted gene migration and seed sourcing, may be used to provide greater resilience for natural ecosystems to both biotic and abiotic stressors.
