Realization of efficient quantum gates with a superconducting qubit-qutrit circuit.

Project description:Building a quantum computer is a daunting challenge since it requires good control but also good isolation from the environment to minimize decoherence. It is therefore important to realize quantum gates efficiently, using as few operations as possible, to reduce the amount of required control and operation time and thus improve the quantum state coherence. Here we propose a superconducting circuit for implementing a tunable system consisting of a qutrit coupled to two qubits. This system can efficiently accomplish various quantum information tasks, including generation of entanglement of the two qubits and conditional three-qubit quantum gates, such as the Toffoli and Fredkin gates. Furthermore, the system realizes a conditional geometric gate which may be used for holonomic (non-adiabatic) quantum computing. The efficiency, robustness and universality of the presented circuit makes it a promising candidate to serve as a building block for larger networks capable of performing involved quantum computational tasks.

Quantum phases in circuit QED with a superconducting qubit array.

Project description:Circuit QED on a chip has become a powerful platform for simulating complex many-body physics. In this report, we realize a Dicke-Ising model with an antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin-spin interaction in circuit QED with a superconducting qubit array. We show that this system exhibits a competition between the collective spin-photon interaction and the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin-spin interaction, and then predict four quantum phases, including: a paramagnetic normal phase, an antiferromagnetic normal phase, a paramagnetic superradiant phase, and an antiferromagnetic superradiant phase. The antiferromagnetic normal phase and the antiferromagnetic superradiant phase are new phases in many-body quantum optics. In the antiferromagnetic superradiant phase, both the antiferromagnetic and superradiant orders can coexist, and thus the system possesses Z(z)₂ ⊗ Z₂ symmetry. Moreover, we find an unconventional photon signature in this phase. In future experiments, these predicted quantum phases could be distinguished by detecting both the mean-photon number and the magnetization.

Exact quantum Bayesian rule for qubit measurements in circuit QED.

Project description:Developing efficient framework for quantum measurements is of essential importance to quantum science and technology. In this work, for the important superconducting circuit-QED setup, we present a rigorous and analytic solution for the effective quantum trajectory equation (QTE) after polaron transformation and converted to the form of Stratonovich calculus. We find that the solution is a generalization of the elegant quantum Bayesian approach developed in arXiv:1111.4016 by Korotokov and currently applied to circuit-QED measurements. The new result improves both the diagonal and off-diagonal elements of the qubit density matrix, via amending the distribution probabilities of the output currents and several important phase factors. Compared to numerical integration of the QTE, the resultant quantum Bayesian rule promises higher efficiency to update the measured state, and allows more efficient and analytical studies for some interesting problems such as quantum weak values, past quantum state, and quantum state smoothing. The method of this work opens also a new way to obtain quantum Bayesian formulas for other systems and in more complicated cases.

Multi-bit quantum random number generation from a single qubit quantum walk.

Project description:We present a scheme for multi-bit quantum random number generation using a single qubit discrete-time quantum walk in one-dimensional space. Irrespective of the initial state of the qubit, quantum interference and entanglement of particle with the position space in the walk dynamics certifies high randomness in the system. Quantum walk in a position space of dimension 2l?+?1 ensures string of (l?+?2)-bits of random numbers from a single measurement. Bit commitment with the position space and control over the spread of the probability distribution in position space enable us with options to extract multi-bit random numbers. This highlights the power of one qubit, its practical importance in generating multi-bit string in single measurement and the role it can play in quantum communication and cryptographic protocols. This can be further extended with quantum walks in higher dimensions.

Universal quantum simulation of single-qubit nonunitary operators using duality quantum algorithm.

Project description:Quantum information processing enhances human's power to simulate nature in quantum level and solve complex problem efficiently. During the process, a series of operators is performed to evolve the system or undertake a computing task. In recent year, research interest in non-Hermitian quantum systems, dissipative-quantum systems and new quantum algorithms has greatly increased, which nonunitary operators take an important role in. In this work, we utilize the linear combination of unitaries technique for nonunitary dynamics on a single qubit to give explicit decompositions of the necessary unitaries, and simulate arbitrary time-dependent single-qubit nonunitary operator F(t) using duality quantum algorithm. We find that the successful probability is not only decided by F(t) and the initial state, but also is inversely proportional to the dimensions of the used ancillary Hilbert subspace. In a general case, the simulation can be achieved in both eight- and six-dimensional Hilbert spaces. In phase matching conditions, F(t) can be simulated by only two qubits. We illustrate our method by simulating typical non-Hermitian systems and single-qubit measurements. Our method can be extended to high-dimensional case, such as Abrams-Lloyd's two-qubit gate. By discussing the practicability, we expect applications and experimental implementations in the near future.

Single-photon three-qubit quantum logic using spatial light modulators.

Project description:The information-carrying capacity of a single photon can be vastly expanded by exploiting its multiple degrees of freedom: spatial, temporal, and polarization. Although multiple qubits can be encoded per photon, to date only two-qubit single-photon quantum operations have been realized. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of three-qubit single-photon, linear, deterministic quantum gates that exploit photon polarization and the two-dimensional spatial-parity-symmetry of the transverse single-photon field. These gates are implemented using a polarization-sensitive spatial light modulator that provides a robust, non-interferometric, versatile platform for implementing controlled unitary gates. Polarization here represents the control qubit for either separable or entangling unitary operations on the two spatial-parity target qubits. Such gates help generate maximally entangled three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W states, which is confirmed by tomographical reconstruction of single-photon density matrices. This strategy provides access to a wide range of three-qubit states and operations for use in few-qubit quantum information processing protocols.Photons are essential for quantum information processing, but to date only two-qubit single-photon operations have been realized. Here the authors demonstrate experimentally a three-qubit single-photon linear deterministic quantum gate by exploiting polarization along with spatial-parity symmetry.

Optical quantum nondemolition measurement of a single rare earth ion qubit.

Project description:Optically-interfaced spins in the solid state are a promising platform for quantum technologies. A crucial component of these systems is high-fidelity, projective measurement of the spin state. Here, we demonstrate single-shot spin readout of a single rare earth ion qubit, Er3+, which is attractive for its telecom-wavelength optical transition and compatibility with silicon nanophotonic circuits. In previous work with laser-cooled atoms and ions, and solid-state defects, spin readout is accomplished using fluorescence on an optical cycling transition; however, Er3+ and other rare earth ions generally lack strong cycling transitions. We demonstrate that modifying the electromagnetic environment around the ion can increase the strength and cyclicity of the optical transition by several orders of magnitude, enabling single-shot quantum nondemolition readout of the ion's spin with 94.6% fidelity. We use this readout to probe coherent dynamics and relaxation of the spin.

A two-qubit photonic quantum processor and its application to solving systems of linear equations.

Project description:Large-scale quantum computers will require the ability to apply long sequences of entangling gates to many qubits. In a photonic architecture, where single-qubit gates can be performed easily and precisely, the application of consecutive two-qubit entangling gates has been a significant obstacle. Here, we demonstrate a two-qubit photonic quantum processor that implements two consecutive CNOT gates on the same pair of polarisation-encoded qubits. To demonstrate the flexibility of our system, we implement various instances of the quantum algorithm for solving of systems of linear equations.

Few-qubit quantum refrigerator for cooling a multi-qubit system.

Project description:We propose to use a few-qubit system as a compact quantum refrigerator for cooling an interacting multi-qubit system. We specifically consider a central qubit coupled to N ancilla qubits in a so-called spin-star model to be used as refrigerant by means of short interactions with a many-qubit system to be cooled. We first show that if the interaction between the qubits is of the longitudinal and ferromagnetic Ising model form, the central qubit is colder than the environment. We summarize how preparing the refrigerant qubits using the spin-star model paves the way for the cooling of a many-qubit system by means of a collisional route to thermalization. We discuss a simple refrigeration cycle, considering the operation cost and cooling efficiency, which can be controlled by N and the qubit-qubit interaction strength. Besides, bounds on the achievable temperature are established. Such few-qubit compact quantum refrigerators can be significant to reduce dimensions of quantum technology applications, can be easy to integrate into all-qubit systems, and can increase the speed and power of quantum computing and thermal devices.

A Multi-Classification Hybrid Quantum Neural Network Using an All-Qubit Multi-Observable Measurement Strategy.

Project description:Quantum machine learning is a promising application of quantum computing for data classification. However, most of the previous research focused on binary classification, and there are few studies on multi-classification. The major challenge comes from the limitations of near-term quantum devices on the number of qubits and the size of quantum circuits. In this paper, we propose a hybrid quantum neural network to implement multi-classification of a real-world dataset. We use an average pooling downsampling strategy to reduce the dimensionality of samples, and we design a ladder-like parameterized quantum circuit to disentangle the input states. Besides this, we adopt an all-qubit multi-observable measurement strategy to capture sufficient hidden information from the quantum system. The experimental results show that our algorithm outperforms the classical neural network and performs especially well on different multi-class datasets, which provides some enlightenment for the application of quantum computing to real-world data on near-term quantum processors.
