Active Usage of Mobile Health Applications: Cross-sectional Study.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Mobile health applications are being increasingly used for people's health management. The different uses of mobile health applications lead to different health outcomes. Although active usage of mobile health applications is shown to be linked to the effectiveness of mobile health services, the factors that influence people's active usage of mobile health applications are not well studied.

Objective

This paper aims to examine the antecedents of active usage of mobile health applications.

Methods

Grounded on the 3-factor theory, we proposed 10 attributes of mobile health applications that influence the active usage of mobile health applications through consumers' satisfaction and dissatisfaction. We classified these 10 attributes into 3 categories (ie, excitement attributes, performance attributes, and basic attributes). Using the survey method, 494 valid responses were collected and analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Results

Our analysis results revealed that both consumer satisfaction (β=0.351, t=6.299, P<.001) and dissatisfaction (β=-0.251, t=5.119, P<.001) significantly influenced active usage. With regard to the effect of attributes, excitement attributes (β=0.525, t=12.861, P<.001) and performance attributes (β=0.297, t=6.508, P<.001) positively influenced consumer satisfaction, while performance attributes (β=-0.231, t=3.729, P<.001) and basic attributes (β=-0.412, t=7.132, P<.001) negatively influenced consumer dissatisfaction. The results of the analysis confirmed our proposed hypotheses.

Conclusions

Our study provides a novel perspective to study the active usage of mobile health applications. By categorizing the attributes of mobile health applications into 3 categories, the differential effects of different attributes can be tested. Meanwhile, consumer satisfaction and dissatisfaction are confirmed to be independent from each other.

Project description:ObjectivesTo investigate whether and what user data are collected by health related mobile applications (mHealth apps), to characterise the privacy conduct of all the available mHealth apps on Google Play, and to gauge the associated risks to privacy.DesignCross sectional study SETTING: Health related apps developed for the Android mobile platform, available in the Google Play store in Australia and belonging to the medical and health and fitness categories.ParticipantsUsers of 20 991 mHealth apps (8074 medical and 12 917 health and fitness found in the Google Play store: in-depth analysis was done on 15 838 apps that did not require a download or subscription fee compared with 8468 baseline non-mHealth apps.Main outcome measuresPrimary outcomes were characterisation of the data collection operations in the apps code and of the data transmissions in the apps traffic; analysis of the primary recipients for each type of user data; presence of adverts and trackers in the app traffic; audit of the app privacy policy and compliance of the privacy conduct with the policy; and analysis of complaints in negative app reviews.Results88.0% (n=18 472) of mHealth apps included code that could potentially collect user data. 3.9% (n=616) of apps transmitted user information in their traffic. Most data collection operations in apps code and data transmissions in apps traffic involved external service providers (third parties). The top 50 third parties were responsible for most of the data collection operations in app code and data transmissions in app traffic (68.0% (2140), collectively). 23.0% (724) of user data transmissions occurred on insecure communication protocols. 28.1% (5903) of apps provided no privacy policies, whereas 47.0% (1479) of user data transmissions complied with the privacy policy. 1.3% (3609) of user reviews raised concerns about privacy.ConclusionsThis analysis found serious problems with privacy and inconsistent privacy practices in mHealth apps. Clinicians should be aware of these and articulate them to patients when determining the benefits and risks of mHealth apps.

Project description:Broadly available digital and mobile health applications (also known as mHealth) have recently gained increasing attention by the vascular community, but very little is known about the dissemination and acceptance of such technologies in certain target populations. The current study aimed to determine the user behaviour and acceptance of such digital technologies amongst patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). A cross-sectional survey of consecutively treated inpatients at 12 university institutions, as well as one non-university institution, was conducted. All admitted patients with symptomatic PAD were surveyed for 30 consecutive days within a flexible timeframe between 1 July and 30 September 2021. The factors associated with smartphone use were estimated via backward selection within a logistic regression model with clustered standard errors. A total of 326 patients participated (response rate 96.3%), thereof 102 (34.0%) were treated for intermittent claudication (IC, 29.2% women, 70 years in median) and 198 were treated for chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI, 29.5% women, 70 years in median). Amongst all of the patients, 46.6% stated that they had not changed their lifestyle and health behaviour since the index diagnosis (four years in median), and 33.1% responded that they were not aware of the reasons for all of their medication orders. Amongst all those surveyed, 66.8% owned a smartphone (IC: 70.6%, CLTI: 64.1%), thereof 27.9% needed regular user support. While 42.5% used smartphone apps, only 15.0% used mobile health applications, and 19.0% owned wearables. One out of five patients agreed that such technologies could help to improve their healthy lifestyle. Only higher age was inversely associated with smartphone possession. The current survey showed that smartphones are prevalent amongst patients with peripheral arterial disease, but only a small proportion used mobile health applications and a considerable number of patients needed regular user support. Almost half of the patients did not change their lifestyle and one third were not aware of the reasons for their medication orders, emphasising room for improvement. These findings can further help to guide future projects using such applications to identify those target populations that are reachable with digital interventions.

Project description:BackgroundMobile eHealth apps are important tools in personal health care management. The Patient Journey app was developed to inform patients with musculoskeletal disorders during their perioperative period. The app contains timely information, video exercises, and functional tasks. Although the Patient Journey app and other health apps are widely used, little research is available on how patients appreciate these apps.ObjectiveThe primary aim of this study was to evaluate the user-friendliness of the Patient Journey app in terms of its usability and the attitudes of users toward the app. The secondary aim was to evaluate positive and negative user experiences.MethodsA web-based questionnaire was sent to 2114 patients scheduled for surgery for a musculoskeletal disorder. Primary outcomes were usability (measured with the System Usability Scale) and user attitudes regarding the Patient Journey app (assessed with the second part of the eHealth Impact Questionnaire). The secondary outcomes were evaluated with multiple choice questions and open-ended questions, which were analyzed via inductive thematic content analyses.ResultsOf the 940 patients who responded, 526 used the Patient Journey app. The usability of the app was high (System Usability Scale: median 85.0, IQR 72.5-92.5), and users had a positive attitude toward the Information and Presentation provided via the app (eHealth Impact Questionnaire: median 78.0, IQR 68.8-84.4). The app did not adequately improve the users' confidence in discussing health with others (eHealth Impact Questionnaire: median 63.9, IQR 50.0-75.0) or motivation to manage health (eHealth Impact Questionnaire: median 61.1, IQR 55.6-72.2). Three core themes emerged regarding positive and negative user experiences: (1) content and information, (2) expectations and experiences, and (3) technical performance. Users experienced timely information and instructions positively and found that the app prepared and guided them optimally through the perioperative period. Negative user experiences were overly optimistic information, scarcely presented information about pain (medication), lack of reference data, insufficient information regarding clinical course deviations and complications, and lack of interaction with clinicians.ConclusionsThe Patient Journey app is a usable, informative, and presentable tool to inform patients with musculoskeletal disorders during their perioperative period. The qualitative analyses identified aspects that can further improve the user experiences of the app.

Project description:BackgroundConcerns have been raised about the adverse health impacts of mobile device usage. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between a child's age at the first use of a mobile device and the duration of use as well as associated behavioral problems among school-aged children.MethodsThis study focused on children aged 7-17 years participating in the Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health. Between October 2020 and October 2021, the participants (n = 3,021) completed a mobile device use-related questionnaire and the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). According to the SDQ score (normal or borderline/high), the outcome variable was behavioral problems. The independent variable was child's age at first use of a mobile device and the duration of use. Covariates included the child's age at the time of survey, sex, sleep problems, internet addiction, health-related quality of life, and history of developmental concerns assessed at health checkups. Logistic regression analysis was performed for all children; the analysis was stratified based on the elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels.ResultsAccording to the SDQ, children who were younger at their first use of a mobile device and used a mobile device for a longer duration represented more problematic behaviors. This association was more pronounced among elementary school children. Moreover, subscale SDQ analysis showed that hyperactivity, and peer and emotional problems among elementary school children, emotional problems among junior high school children, and conduct problems among senior high school children were related to early and long usage of mobile devices.ConclusionsElementary school children are more sensitive to mobile device usage than older children, and early use of mobile devices may exacerbate emotional instability and oppositional behaviors in teenagers. Longitudinal follow-up studies are needed to clarify whether these problems disappear with age.

Project description:BackgroundMobile health apps have the potential to motivate people to adopt healthier behavior, but many fail to maintain this behavior over time. However, it has been suggested that long-term adherence can be improved by personalizing the proposed interventions. Based on the literature, we created a conceptual framework for selecting appropriate functionalities according to the user's profile.ObjectiveThis cross-sectional study aims to investigate if the relationships linking functionalities and profiles proposed in our conceptual framework are confirmed by user preferences.MethodsA web-based questionnaire comprising several sections was developed to determine the mobile app functionalities most likely to promote healthier behavior. First, participants completed questionnaires to define the user profile (Big Five Inventory-10, Hexad Scale, and perception of the social norm using dimensions of the Theory of Planned Behavior). Second, participants were asked to select the 5 functionalities they considered to be the most relevant to motivate healthier behavior and to evaluate them on a score ranging from 0 to 100. We will perform logistic regressions with the selected functionalities as dependent variables and with the 3 profile scales as predictors to allow us to understand the effect of the participants' scores on each of the 3 profile scales on the 5 selected functionalities. In addition, we will perform logistic ordinal regressions with the motivation score of the functionalities chosen as dependent variables and with scores of the 3 profile scales as predictors to determine whether the scores on the different profile scales predict the functionality score.ResultsData collection was conducted between July and December 2021. Analysis of responses began in January 2022, with the publication of results expected by the end of 2022.ConclusionsThis study will allow us to validate our conceptual model by defining the preferred functionalities according to user profiles.International registered report identifier (irrid)RR1-10.2196/38603.

Project description:BackgroundMobile devices are now widely and extensively used by university students. With the rapid advancement in technology, mobile learning has become an important educational model, particularly for health schools' students. This research aims to investigate the attitudes of health schools' students in Jordan towards mobile learning, as well as their perceptions of mobile learning advantages and disadvantages compared to the traditional face-to-face learning model.MethodsA quantitative research design was employed, with data collected through a web-based cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire using Google® Forms. The questionnaire was distributed to 703 students across the five health schools at the University of Jordan, with 690 students completing it, resulting in a response rate of 98.2%.ResultsAmong the participants, 92.6% reported using smartphones as their primary device for mobile learning, and 98.8% relied on YouTube as their main educational website. Over two-thirds of the surveyed students expressed concerns about feeling isolated during mobile learning. A majority (64.9%) believed that there is a need for developing learning applications with offline accessibility, while 62.3% emphasized the importance of adapting exam platforms to be compatible with all mobile devices. Approximately 63% of the participants felt that mobile learning should complement face-to-face learning. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found among the different health schools' students regarding the purposes for which they used mobile learning, such as watching educational videos or accessing the university library website. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were also observed between groups concerning the perceived advantages of mobile learning.ConclusionStudents from the health schools at the University of Jordan confirmed that they use mobile devices, primarily smartphones, to support their learning. However, the use of these devices for educational purposes was not highly advanced, with a preference for face-to-face learning methods. The findings of this research will assist policymakers and educators in planning infrastructure and curricula for health education in Jordan, utilizing mobile learning to better meet the needs of an increasing student population.
