Project description:This data article provides research data on the perception of public-sector corruption in Mauritius, captured using a survey questionnaire as well as a thematic framework for the analysis of corruption court cases prosecuted by the national anti-corruption body, namely, the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC). A sequential mixed methods design was adopted. First, a quantitative approach was used, whereby a questionnaire was developed and administered on 600 persons to gauge public opinion on the perceived seriousness of the phenomenon of public-sector corruption in the country while at the same time recording citizens' perceived effectiveness of the ICAC in its fight against public corruption in Mauritius. Second, to cross-validate the quantitative findings on the perceived effectiveness of the ICAC in fulfilling its mandate as an anti-corruption agency, a content analysis of court judgments prosecuted by ICAC from 2002 to 2018, was conducted to find out whether or not the respondents' perceptions of the prosecutorial efficacy of the ICAC was justified. The questionnaire, the raw dataset as well as the analysis of court judgments can be downloaded from the Mendeley Data repository (https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/h8k5ghvhgh/1). The data may be reused for similar research in other parts of the world. The research findings have been published in The International Journal of Law, Crime, and Justice.

Project description:This data article describes a survey dataset on administrative corruption and its main determinants (culture, organizational culture, political instability, and institutional weakness) in addition to social class. Prior research was consulted to determine indicators of the constructs of administrative corruption. Each construct has four reflective indicators while social class has formative variables. All items are measured using a seven-point Likert scale and semantic differential scale types. Through Google Form, I collected 677 responses that reflect the perspective of the general public in Basra, Iraq. The paper shows how to build observed indicators for administrative corruption and its main causes, and a summary of the raw data. The dataset can be reused by other researchers and easily downloaded from the Mendeley Data repository (https://doi.org/10.17632/xh22fsmvmc.2). While the dataset is prepared for building and testing a model using a structural equation modeling approach, it sheds light on the debate regarding an increasingly important topic internationally, and especially in Middle Eastern countries, such as Iraq, that experience high rates of corruption and political instability.

Project description:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has resulted in the death of over four million people since late 2019. To reduce the human and economic costs of COVID-19, different vaccines have been developed and distributed across countries. There has been significant cross-country variation in the vaccination of people against COVID-19. In this study, we focus on public corruption to explain the significant cause of cross-country variation in immunization progress. We suggest that countries with a higher degree of public corruption have been less successful in the vaccination of their population, controlling for other important determinants of immunization progress.

Project description:Corruption is a social plague: gains accrue to small groups, while its costs are borne by everyone. Significant variation in its level between and within countries suggests a relationship between social structure and the prevalence of corruption, yet, large-scale empirical studies thereof have been missing due to lack of data. In this paper, we relate the structural characteristics of social capital of settlements with corruption in their local governments. Using datasets from Hungary, we quantify corruption risk by suppressed competition and lack of transparency in the settlement's awarded public contracts. We characterize social capital using social network data from a popular online platform. Controlling for social, economic and political factors, we find that settlements with fragmented social networks, indicating an excess of bonding social capital has higher corruption risk, and settlements with more diverse external connectivity, suggesting a surplus of bridging social capital is less exposed to corruption. We interpret fragmentation as fostering in-group favouritism and conformity, which increase corruption, while diversity facilitates impartiality in public life and stifles corruption.

Project description:The field of human action recognition has made great strides in recent years, much helped by the availability of a wide variety of datasets that use Kinect to record human movement. Conversely, progress towards the use of Kinect in clinical practice has been hampered by the lack of appropriate data. In particular, datasets that contain clinically significant movements and appropriate metadata. This paper proposes a dataset to address this issue, namely KINECAL. It contains the recordings of 90 individuals carrying out 11 movements, commonly used in the clinical assessment of balance. The dataset contains relevant metadata, including clinical labelling, falls history labelling and postural sway metrics. KINECAL should be of interest to researchers interested in the clinical use of motion capture and motion analysis.

Project description:Invasive species have an enormous global impact, with international trade being the leading pathway for their introduction. Current multinational trade deals under negotiation will dramatically change trading partnerships and pathways. These changes have considerable potential to influence biological invasions and global biodiversity. Using a database of 47 328 interceptions spanning 10 years, we demonstrate how development and governance socio-economic indicators of trading partners can predict exotic species interceptions. For import pathways associated with vegetable material, a significantly higher risk of exotic species interceptions was associated with countries that are poorly regulated, have more forest cover and have surprisingly low corruption. Corruption and indicators such as political stability or adherence to rule of law were important in vehicle or timber import pathways. These results will be of considerable value to policy makers, primarily by shifting quarantine procedures to focus on countries of high risk based on their socio-economic status. Further, using New Zealand as an example, we demonstrate how a ninefold reduction in incursions could be achieved if socio-economic indicators were used to select trade partners. International trade deals that ignore governance and development indicators may facilitate introductions and biodiversity loss. Development and governance within countries clearly have biodiversity implications beyond borders.

Project description:This article presents a five-part dataset for human gait analysis in a healthy older adult population (37 women and seven men; age 69.98 ± 8.57 years, body mass index 27.71 ± 4.57). Part 1 compromises demographic data for the 44 participants, along with the results of the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) motor function test and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We used the MMSE to ensure the participants could understand the experimental protocol instructions. Part 2 presents the anthropometric measurements of the participants. Part 3 shows the results for each item of the Gait component of the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA-G). Part 4 contains five files per participant, storing motion-capture data for the lower limb in the Coordinate 3D (C3D) format. These files were generated using a Vicon motion analysis system, consisting of 24 reflective markers and seven cameras (Vantage V5) sampled at 100 Hz. Part 5 contains 26 gait parameters for each C3D file obtained using Nexus 2.9.3. The dataset is available in a Mendeley repository (Reserved DOI: 10.17632/xgw6bg3g8h.1).

Project description:BackgroundHealthcare waste management is very important due to its hazardous nature that can cause risk to human health and the environment. In developing countries, healthcare waste has not received much attention and has been disposed of together with municipal waste. The aim of the study was to assess the healthcare waste management practices in Addis Ababa City Administration Public Health Facilities.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional design was used for the study at Addis Ababa city 15 Public health centres and 3 hospitals. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires distributed to 636 randomly selected healthcare waste handlers and managers. Observational check list also used. The data were entered into the EPI- INFO version TM 7 and exported to IBM SPSS 20 for analysis. Both descriptive and analytic statistics were employed.ResultsAmong the respondents, 358 (90.86%) from health centres and 96.38% (133) from hospitals indicated that their facilities had separate containers for hazardous and non-hazardous waste however, 61 (15.48%) from health centres and 29 (21.01%) from hospitals indicated that healthcare waste containers were not clearly marked or labelled. The study found that the main forms of on-site treatment of healthcare waste for health centres and hospitals before disposal were burning. Manager respondents from the health centres 65 (92.86%), 64 (91.43%) and from hospitals 31 (91.18%), 30 (88.24%) indicated that healthcare waste handlers were used protective clothing when handling waste and were provided with protective clothing when handling healthcare waste respectively.ConclusionIn this study healthcare waste management among healthcare waste handlers and healthcare facility managers were not getting full attention. Collection of healthcare waste were not done regularly, containers were not clearly marked and were not located in appropriate areas where they might be needed. Support healthcare waste handlers by training help to improve their knowledge, attitude and practice.

Project description:SummaryAs the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles have become widely accepted in the proteomics field, under the guidance of ProteomeXchange and The Human Proteome Organization Proteomics Standards Initiative, proteomics public databases have been providing Application Programming Interfaces for programmatic access. Based on generating logic from proteomics data, we present Patpat, an extensible framework for searching public datasets, merging results from multiple databases to help researchers find their proteins of interest in the vast mass spectrometry. Patpat's 2D strategy of combining results from multiple databases allows users to provide only protein identifiers to obtain metadata for relevant datasets, improving the 'Findable' of proteomics data.Availability and implementationThe Patpat framework is released under the Apache 2.0 license open source, and the source code is stored on GitHub (https://github.com/henry-leo/Patpat) and is freely available.Supplementary informationSupplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Project description:In vitro toxicology approaches have evolved, from a focus on the molecular changes within a cell to understanding of toxicity-related mechanisms that simulate the in vivo environment. The recent development of three dimensional (3-D) organotypic nasal epithelial culture models offer a physiologically robust system for studying the effects of exposure through inhalation. Exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) is associated with nasal inflammation; thus the nasal epithelium is relevant for evaluating the pathophysiological impact of CS exposure. The present study investigated further the relevancy and application of in vitro human 3-D nasal epithelial culture models for toxicological assessment of inhalation exposure. The biological impact was assessed following exposure to aerosol generated from a candidate modified risk tobacco product (MRTP), the Tobacco Heating System (THS) 2.2, as compared with smoke generated from reference cigarette 3R4F using an in vitro human 3-D nasal epithelial cultures. A series of experimental repetitions where multiple doses of the aerosol and smoke were applied, were conducted to obtain reproducible measurements and reliable observations to understand the cellular/molecular changes that occur following exposure. Aligned with the 3Rs Strategy and the Vision-and-Strategy of the Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century, this study implemented a systems toxicology approach and found that for all tested concentrations, the impact of 3R4F smoke was considerably greater than that of THS2.2 aerosol in terms of cytotoxicity levels, alterations in the tissue morphology, secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators, impaired ciliary function, and increased perturbed transcriptomes and miRNA expression profiles. In addition, to evaluate further the possible adverse effects of THS2.2 aerosol, a dose range assessment was conducted. A broader range of THS2.2 concentrations were exposed to the nasal cultures. Various dilutions of THS2.2 were applied to the cultures using the Vitrocell® 24/48 exposure system, corresponding to the concentrations of nicotine between 0.15 mg/L and 1.79 mg/L.
