Distinct soil bacterial patterns along narrow and broad elevational gradients in the grassland of Mt. Tianshan, China.

ABSTRACT: Bacteria are essential regulators of soil biogeochemical cycles. While several studies of bacterial elevational patterns have been performed in recent years, the drivers of these patterns remain incompletely understood. To clarify bacterial distribution patterns and diversity across narrow- and broad-scale elevational gradients, we collected soil samples from 22 sites in the grasslands of Mt. Tianshan in China along three elevational transects and the overall elevation transect: (1) 6 sites at elevations of 1047-1587 m, (2) 8 sites at 876-3070 m, and (3) 8 sites at 1602-2110 m. The bacterial community diversity across the overall elevation transects exhibited a hump-like pattern, whereas consistent patterns were not observed in the separate elevational transects. The bacterial community composition at the phylum level differed across the transects and elevation sites. The Actinobacteria was the most abundant phylum overall (41.76%) but showed clear variations in the different transects. Furthermore, heatmap analyses revealed that both pH and mean annual temperature (MAT) were significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with bacterial community composition as well as the dominant bacterial phyla, classes, and genera. These findings provide an inclusive view of bacterial community structures in relation to the environmental factors of the different elevational patterns.

Project description:Approximately 64% of the Republic of Korea comprises mountainous areas, which as cold and high-altitude regions are gravely affected by climate change. Within the mountainous and the alpine-subalpine ecosystems, microbial communities play a pivotal role in biogeochemical cycling and partly regulate climate change through such cycles. We investigated the composition and function of microbial communities, with a focus on fungal communities, in Republic of Korea's second tallest mountain, Mt. Jiri, along a four-point-altitude gradient: 600-, 1,000-, 1,200-, and 1,400-m. Soil pH and elevation were negatively correlated, with soils becoming more acidic at higher altitude. Of the five soil enzyme activities analyzed, cellobiohydrolase, β-1,4-glucosidase, and β-1,4-xylosidase activity showed differences among the elevation levels, with lower activity at 600 m than that at 1,400 m. Soil microbial biomass correlated positively with increasing elevation and soil water content. The decrease in β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase suggests a reduction in fungal biomass with increasing altitude, while factors other than elevation may influence the increase in activity of the cellobiohydrolase, β-1,4-glucosidase and β-1,4-xylosidase. Fungal alpha diversity did not exhibit an elevational trend, whereas beta diversity formed two clusters (600-1,000 m and 1,200-1,400 m). Community composition was similar among the elevations, with Basidiomycota being the most predominant phylum, followed by Ascomycota. Conversely, among the fungal communities at 1,000 m, Ascomycota was the most dominant, possibly due to increased pathotroph percentage. Elevational gradients induce changes in soil properties, vegetation, and climate factors such as temperature and precipitation, all of which impact soil microbial communities and altogether create a mutually reinforcing system. Hence, inspection of elevation-based microbial communities can aid in inferring ecosystem properties, specifically those related to nutrient cycling, and can partly help assess the oncoming direct and indirect effects of climate change.

Project description:The family Orchidaceae is not only one of the most diverse families of flowering plants, but also one of the most endangered plant taxa. Therefore, understanding how its species richness varies along geographical and environmental gradients is essential for conservation efforts. However, such knowledge is rarely available, especially on a large scale. We used a database extracted from herbarium records to investigate the relationships between orchid species richness and elevation, and to examine how elevational diversity in Yunnan Province, China, might be explained by mid-domain effect (MDE), species-area relationship (SAR), water-energy dynamics (WED), Rapoport's Rule, and climatic variables. This particular location was selected because it is one of the primary centers of distribution for orchids. We recorded 691 species that span 127 genera and account for 88.59% of all confirmed orchid species in Yunnan. Species richness, estimated at 200-m intervals along a slope, was closely correlated with elevation, peaking at 1395 to 1723 m. The elevational pattern of orchid richness was considerably shaped by MDE, SAR, WED, and climate. Among those four predictors, climate was the strongest while MDE was the weakest for predicting the elevational pattern of orchid richness. Species richness showed parabolic responses to mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP), with maximum richness values recorded at 13.7 to 17.7°C for MAT and 1237 to 1414 mm for MAP. Rapoport's Rule also helped to explain the elevational pattern of species richness in Yunnan, but those influences were not entirely uniform across all methods. These results suggested that the elevational pattern of orchid species richness in Yunnan is collectively shaped by several mechanisms related to geometric constraints, size of the land area, and environments. Because of the dominant role of climate in determining orchid richness, our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the potential effects of climate change on orchid diversity, and the development of conservation strategies for orchids.

Project description:Soil fungi are essential to ecosystem processes, yet their elevational distribution patterns and the ecological mechanisms shaping their communities remain poorly understood and actively debated, particularly in arid regions. Here, we investigated the diversity patterns and underlying mechanisms shaping soil fungal communities along an elevational gradient (1,707-3,548 m) on the northern slope of the Central Kunlun Mountains in northwest China. Results indicated that the dominant phyla identified across the seven elevational gradients were Basidiomycota and Ascomycota, displaying a unimodal pattern and a U-shaped pattern in relative abundance, respectively. Soil saprotroph and nectar/tap saprotroph were the dominant functional groups (>1.0%). Along the elevational gradients, soil fungal α-diversity demonstrated a generally decreasing trend, whereas β-diversity showed a contrasting increasing trend. Among the environmental variables, altitude and climate (mean annual precipitation, MAP; mean annual temperature, MAT) were the strongest predictors for α-diversity. Partial least squares path modeling (PLSPM) analysis revealed that soil water content (Wat) was the most influential factor driving fungal α-diversity, while vegetation coverage (Veg) emerged as the primary determinant of soil fungal community composition. The influence of Wat on fungal α-diversity shifted from indirect to direct as elevation increased, transitioning from lower elevations (≤2,448 m) to higher elevations (≥2,746 m). Similarly, the impact of Veg on soil fungal community composition exhibited a comparable pattern. The null model analysis revealed that homogeneous selection and dispersal limitation dominated the soil fungal community assembly at elevations lower than 2,448 m and higher than 2,746 m, respectively. Variations in ecological processes may be linked to changes in key environmental factors that influence soil fungal communities in an elevation-dependent manner. These findings can enhance our ability to predict soil fungal diversity patterns and their responses to climate change in the ecosystems of the northern slope of the Central Kunlun Mountain.
