Unpredicted Concentration-Dependent Sensory Properties of Pyrene-Containing NBN-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

ABSTRACT: Pyrene molecules containing NBN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized by a simple and efficient intermolecular dehydration reaction between 1-pyrenylboronic acid and aromatic diamine. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) with a five-membered NBN ring and pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) with a six-membered NBN ring show differing luminescence. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) shows concentration-dependent luminescence and enhanced emission after grinding at solid state. Pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) exhibits a turn-on type luminescence upon fluoride ion addition at lower concentration, as well as concentration-dependent stability. Further potential applications of Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) on artificial light-harvesting film were demonstrated by using commercial NiR dye as acceptor.

This includes key high-yielding ring-closure steps which, through intramolecular C-O bond formation, allow stepwise planarization of oligonaphthalenes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed that the tetraoxa derivative forms remarkable face-to-face ?-? stacks in the solid state, a favorable solid-state arrangement for organic electronics.

Project description:Assessing the potential carcinogenicity of human toxins represents an ongoing challenge. Chronic rodent bioassays predict human cancer risk with limited reliability, and are expensive and time-consuming. To identify alternative prediction methods, we evaluated a transcriptomics-based human in vitro model to classify carcinogens by their modes of action. The aim of this study was to determine the transcriptomic response and identify specific molecular signatures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be used as predictors of carcinogenicity of environmental toxins in human in vitro systems. We found that characteristic molecular signatures facilitate identification and prediction of carcinogens. To evaluate the change in gene expression levels, human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells were exposed to nine different PAHs (benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, 3-methylcholanthrene, naphthalene, chrysene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene) for 48 h. Gene expression analysis was conducted using a 44K whole human genome microarray (Agilent Technologies, USA).

Data of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration in the Siberian Arctic seas sediments.

Project description:Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the most dangerous persistent organic pollutants in the Arctic. They have different sources and pathways of entering in to the environment. Because of their lipophilic properties, PAHs can easily accumulate in marine sediments. This work gives a new data about concentration of PAHs in Siberian arctic seas. Sixteen priority PAHs as well as 1- and 2-methylnaphthalenes were analyzed by gas chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry in the twenty-four sediment samples taken from Kara, Laptev and East Siberian Seas in October 2020. The obtained sum concentrations ranged from 31 to 223 ng g-1 with the greatest contribution of phenanthrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, as well as naphthalene and its methyl derivatives while the greatest PAH levels were observed in Laptev Sea. The toxic equivalent in benzo[a]pyrene units was from 2.2-18.2 ng g-1. Total organic carbon (TOC) and black carbon (BC) content in arctic were in the ranges of 0.18-1.98 % and 0.03-0.40 %, respectively. The overall PAH level shows negligible harm to the environment.

Formation Mechanism of Benzo(a)pyrene: One of the Most Carcinogenic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH).

Project description:The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a strong global concern due to their harmful effects. To help the reduction of their emissions, a crucial understanding of their formation and a deep exploration of their growth mechanism is required. In the present work, the formation of benzo(a)pyrene was investigated computationally employing chrysene and benz(a)anthracene as starting materials. It was assumed a type of methyl addition/cyclization (MAC) was the valid growth mechanism in this case. Consequently, the reactions implied addition reactions, ring closures, hydrogen abstractions and intramolecular hydrogen shifts. These steps of the mechanism were computed to explore benzo(a)pyene formation. The corresponding energies of the chemical species were determined via hybrid density funcional theory (DFT), B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) and M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p). Results showed that the two reaction routes had very similar trends energetically, the difference between the energy levels of the corresponding molecules was just 6.13 kJ/mol on average. The most stable structure was obtained in the benzo(a)anthracene pathway.

A Modular Cascade Synthetic Strategy Toward Structurally Constrained Boron-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

Project description:A novel synthetic strategy was developed for the construction of difficult-to-access structurally constrained boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (sc-B-PAHs) via a cascade reaction from the readily available ortho-aryl-substituted diarylalkynes. This domino process involves borylative cyclization, 1,4-boron migration and successive two-fold electrophilic borylation. Two types of sc-B-PAHs bearing B-doped [4]helicene (1 a-1 i) or BN-doped [4]helicene (1 n-1 t) and double [4]helicene (1 u-1 v) are constructed by this cascade reaction. Remarkably, this synthetic strategy is characterized by modest yields (20-50 %) and broad substrate scope (18 examples) with versatile functional group tolerance. The resultant sc-B-PAHs show good stability under ambient conditions and are thoroughly investigated by X-ray crystallography, UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Interestingly enough, BN-doped [4]helicene 1 o forms a unique alternating π-stacked dimer of enantiomers within a helical columnar superstructure, while BN-doped double [4]helicene 1 u establishes an unprecedented π-stacked trimeric sandwich structure with a rare 2D lamellar π-stacking. The synthetic approach reported herein represents a powerful tool for the rapid generation of novel sc-B-PAHs, which are highly attractive for the elucidation of the structure-property relationship and for potential optoelectronic applications.

One-Pot Synthesis of Boron-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons via 1,4-Boron Migration.

Project description:Herein, we demonstrate a novel one-pot synthetic method towards a series of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (B-PAHs, 1 a-1 o), including hitherto unknown B-doped zethrene derivatives, from ortho-aryl substituted diarylalkynes with high atom efficiency and broad substrate scopes. A reaction mechanism is proposed based on the experimental investigation together with the theoretical calculations, which involves a unique 1,4-boron migration process. The resultant benchtop-stable B-PAHs are thoroughly investigated by X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, UV/Vis absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopies. The blue and green organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices based on 1 f and 1 k are further fabricated, demonstrating the promising application potential of B-PAHs in organic optoelectronics.

Zirconacyclopentadiene-Annulated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

Project description:Syntheses of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and graphene nanostructures demand methods that are capable of selectively and efficiently fusing large numbers of aromatic rings, yet such methods remain scarce. Herein, we report a new approach that is based on the quantitative intramolecular reductive cyclization of an oligo(diyne) with a low-valent zirconocene reagent, which gives a PAH with one or more annulated zirconacyclopentadienes (ZrPAHs). The efficiency of this process is demonstrated by a high-yielding fivefold intramolecular coupling to form a helical ZrPAH with 16 fused rings (from a precursor with no fused rings). Several other PAH topologies are also reported. Protodemetalation of the ZrPAHs allowed full characterization (including by X-ray crystallography) of PAHs containing one or more appended dienes with the ortho-quinodimethane (o-QDM) structure, which are usually too reactive for isolation and are potentially valuable for the fusion of additional rings by Diels-Alder reactions.
