The epithelial cell rests of Malassez (ERM) are essential in preventing ankylosis between the alveolar bone and the tooth (dentoalveolar ankylosis). Despite extensive research, the mechanism by which ERM cells suppress ankylosis remains uncertain; perhaps its varied population is to reason.
