Electrochemical performance of composite electrodes based on rGO, Mn/Cu metal-organic frameworks, and PANI.

ABSTRACT: Benzendicarboxylic acid (BDC)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely utilized in various applications, including supercapacitor electrode materials. Manganese and copper have solid diamond frames formed with BDC linkers among transition metals chosen for MOF formation. They have shown the possibility to enlarge capacitance at different combinations of MOFs and polyaniline (PANI). Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used as the matrix to fabricate electrochemical double-layer SCs. PANI and Mn/Cu-MOF's effect on the properties of electrode materials was investigated through electrochemical analysis. As a result, the highest specific capacitance of about 276 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g was obtained for rGO/Cu-MOF@PANI composite.

Smart Nanocomposites of Cu-Hemin Metal-Organic Frameworks for Electrochemical Glucose Biosensing.

Project description:Herein, a smart porous material, Cu-hemin metal-organic-frameworks (Cu-hemin MOFs), was synthesized via assembling of Cu2+ with hemin to load glucose oxidase (GOD) for electrochemical glucose biosensing for the first time. The formation of the Cu-hemin MOFs was verified by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, thermal analysis and electrochemical techniques. The results indicated that the Cu-hemin MOFs showed a ball-flower-like hollow cage structure with a large specific surface area and a large number of mesopores. A large number of GOD molecules could be successfully loaded in the pores of Cu-hemin MOFs to keep their bioactivity just like in a solution. The GOD/Cu-hemin MOFs exhibited both good performance toward oxygen reduction reaction via Cu-hemin MOFs and catalytic oxidation of glucose via GOD, superior to other GOD/MOFs and GOD/nanomaterials. Accordingly, the performance of GOD/Cu-hemin MOFs-based electrochemical glucose sensor was enhanced greatly, showing a wide linear range from 9.10 μM to 36.0 mM and a low detection limit of 2.73 μM. Moreover, the sensor showed satisfactory results in detection of glucose in human serum. This work provides a practical design of new electrochemical sensing platform based on MOFs and biomolecules.

Recent Advancements of Polyaniline/Metal Organic Framework (PANI/MOF) Composite Electrodes for Supercapacitor Applications: A Critical Review.

Project description:Supercapacitors (SCs), also known as ultracapacitors, should be one of the most promising contenders for meeting the needs of human viable growth owing to their advantages: for example, excellent capacitance and rate efficiency, extended durability, and cheap materials price. Supercapacitor research on electrode materials is significant because it plays a vital part in the performance of SCs. Polyaniline (PANI) is an exceptional candidate for energy-storage applications owing to its tunable structure, multiple oxidation/reduction reactions, cheap price, environmental stability, and ease of handling. With their exceptional morphology, suitable functional linkers, metal sites, and high specific surface area, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are outstanding materials for electrodes fabrication in electrochemical energy storage systems. The combination of PANI and MOF (PANI/MOF composites) as electrode materials demonstrates additional benefits, which are worthy of exploration. The positive impacts of the two various electrode materials can improve the resultant electrochemical performances. Recently, these kinds of conducting polymers with MOFs composites are predicted to become the next-generation electrode materials for the development of efficient and well-organized SCs. The recent achievements in the use of PANI/MOFs-based electrode materials for supercapacitor applications are critically reviewed in this paper. Furthermore, we discuss the existing issues with PANI/MOF composites and their analogues in the field of supercapacitor electrodes in addition to potential future improvements.

General synthesis of hierarchical sheet/plate-like M-BDC (M = Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zr) metal-organic frameworks for electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

Project description:Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) are an attractive platform to develop new kinds of catalysts because of their structural tunability and large specific surface area that exposes numerous active sites. In this work, we report a general method to synthesize benzene dicarboxylic acid (BDC)-based MOFs with hierarchical 3D morphologies composed of 2D nanosheets or nanoplates. In our proposed strategy, acetonitrile helps solvate the metal ions in solution and affects the morphology, while polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) serves as a shape-control agent to assist in the nucleation and growth of MOF nanosheets. PVP also acts as a depletion agent to drive the assembly of the hierarchical sheet/plate-like M-BDC under solvothermal conditions. Further, we also demonstrate the flexibility of the proposed method using numerous coordinating metal ions (M = Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zr). The potential of these MOFs for electrochemical glucose sensing is examined using the hierarchical sheet-like Ni-BDC MOF as the optimum sample. It drives the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose over a wide range (0.01 mM to 0.8 mM) with high sensitivity (635.9 μA mM-1 cm-2) in the absence of modification with carbon or the use of conductive substrates. It also demonstrates good selectivity with low limit of detection (LoD = 6.68 μM; signal/noise = 3), and fast response time (<5 s).

Enhanced electrochemical properties of cerium metal-organic framework based composite electrodes for high-performance supercapacitor application.

Project description:Cerium metal-organic framework based composites (Ce-MOF/GO and Ce-MOF/CNT) were synthesized by a wet chemical route and characterized with different techniques to characterize their crystal nature, morphology, functional groups, and porosity. The obtained Ce-MOF in the composites exhibit a nanorod structure with a size of ∼150 nm. The electrochemical performance of the composites was investigated in 3 M KOH and 3 M KOH + 0.2 M K3Fe(CN)6 electrolytes. Enhanced electrochemical behavior was obtained for the Ce-MOF/GO composite in both electrolytes and exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 2221.2 F g-1 with an energy density of 111.05 W h kg-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. The large mesoporous structure and the presence of oxygen functional groups in Ce-MOF/GO could facilitate ion transport in the electrode/electrolyte interface, and the results suggested that the Ce-MOF/GO composite could be used as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode material.

Microscopic Origin of Electrochemical Capacitance in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Electroconductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors, but the fundamental understanding of the underlying chemical processes is limited. Here, the electrochemical interface of Cu3(HHTP)2 (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) with an organic electrolyte is investigated using a multiscale quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics (QM/MM) procedure and experimental electrochemical measurements. Our simulations reproduce the observed capacitance values and reveals the polarization phenomena of the nanoporous framework. We find that excess charges mainly form on the organic ligand, and cation-dominated charging mechanisms give rise to greater capacitance. The spatially confined electric double-layer structure is further manipulated by changing the ligand from HHTP to HITP (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene). This minimal change to the electrode framework not only increases the capacitance but also increases the self-diffusion coefficients of in-pore electrolytes. The performance of MOF-based supercapacitors can be systematically controlled by modifying the ligating group.

A Polymeric Composite Material (rGO/PANI) for Acid Blue 129 Adsorption.

Project description:Over the years, polyaniline (PANI) has received enormous attention due to its unique properties. Herein, it was chosen to develop a new polymeric composite material: reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline (rGO/PANI). The composite was prepared by a simple and cost-effective fabrication method of formation by mixing and sonication in various conditions. The obtained materials were characterized and identified using various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The objective of the paper was to confirm its applicability for the removal of contaminants from water. Water could be contaminated by various types of pollutants, e.g., inorganics, heavy metals, and many other industrial compounds, including dyes. We confirmed that the Acid Blue 129 dyes can be substantially removed through adsorption on prepared rGO/PANI. The adsorption kinetic data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models and the adsorption isotherm model was identified.

Cu(I/II) Metal-Organic Frameworks Incorporated Nanofiltration Membranes for Organic Solvent Separation.

Project description:Copper-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different oxidation states and near-uniform particle sizes have been successfully synthesized. Mixed-matrix polyimide membranes incorporating 0.1-7 wt% of Cu(II) benzene-1,2,5-tricarboxylic acid (Cu(II)BTC), Cu(I/II)BTC and Cu(I) 1,2-ethanedisulfonic acid (EDS) (Cu(I)EDS) MOFs were fabricated via non-solvent-induced phase inversion process. These membranes are found to be solvent resistant and mechanically stable. Liquid phase nanofiltration experiments were performed to separate toluene from n-heptane at room temperature. These membranes demonstrate preferential adsorption and permeation of the aromatic toluene over aliphatic n-heptane. The amount of MOF particles incorporated, the oxidation state of the Cu ion and membrane, and barrier layer thickness have a significant impact on the separation factor. Toluene/heptane separation factor at 1.47, 1.67 and 1.79 can be obtained for membranes incorporating 7 wt% Cu(II)BTC, Cu(I/II)BTC and Cu(I)EDS respectively at room temperature.

Laser-Induced Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Flexible Electrodes for Electrochemical Sensing.

Project description:The successful development of a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Co/Co3O4/C core-shell composite integrated into laser-induced graphitic (LIG) carbon electrodes for electrochemical sensing is reported. The sensors are fabricated via a direct laser scribing technique using a UV laser (355 nm wavelength) to induce the photothermolysis of rationally selected ZIF-67 into the LIG matrix. Electrochemical characterization reveals that the incorporation of the laser-scribed ZIF-67-derived composite on the electrode surface reduces the impedance more than 100 times compared with bare LIG sensors. Comprehensive morphological, structural, and chemical analyses confirm the formation of porous LIG from the laser irradiation of polyimide, while the LIG+ZIF-67-derived composites feature size-controlled and uniformly distributed Co/Co3O4 core/shell nanoparticles (NPs) in the semihollow wasp-nest-like carbon matrix from photothermal decomposition of ZIF-67, embedded within the LIG electrode area. The high surface area and porosity of this ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-rich carbon facilitate charge transfer processes, whereas size-controlled Co/Co3O4 core/shell NPs offer accessible electrochemical active sites, making these LIG+ZIF-67-derived composite-based sensors promising materials for applications requiring high charge injection capability and low electrode/electrolyte interface impedance. The PI+Z67L sensor exhibited a 400 times higher specific capacitance (2.4 mF cm-2) compared to the PIL sensor (6 μF cm-2). This laser scribing approach enables the rapid and cost-effective fabrication of high-performance electrochemical sensors enhanced by the integration of tailored MOF-derived composites.

Two-dimensional conductive phthalocyanine-based metal-organic frameworks for electrochemical nitrite sensing.

Project description:2D nickel phthalocyanine based MOFs (NiPc-MOFs) with excellent conductivity were synthesized through a solvothermal approach. Benefiting from excellent conductivity and a large surface area, 2D NiPc-MOF nanosheets present excellent electrocatalytic activity for nitrite sensing, with an ultra-wide linear concentration from 0.01 mM to 11 500 mM and a low detection limit of 2.3 μM, better than most reported electrochemical nitrite sensors. Significantly, this work reports the synthesis of 2D conductive NiPc-MOFs and develops them as electrochemical biosensors for non-enzymatic nitrite determination for the first time.
